I haven't found an enormous amount of Middle Eastern cuisine in Asheville, but this place brought the vibe. It's small and unassuming in a strip mall in West Asheville. My takeout was ready on time. While the falafel roll still might have been better fresh, I wanted something that I could plausibly eat several hours later on a mountain without a ton of restaurants nearby, and that choice worked out well. Many falafel rolls come with add-ons that I don't like, but the pickled turnip offering here was both flavorful and colorful. I also got their fries, drizzles with tahini and parsley, which is a good way to eat fries. A case of baked goods and a small market section of canned items were also available. There was certainly space to eat inside or out for someone without my travel schedule. It's also notable that in addition to the usual falafel, they offer ample vegan options as befits the Asheville community, including a house seitan and some other vegetable and fake meat options. While keeping in mind that this is an extremely informal and casual sort of restaurant with counter service, I still have to say that the service is excellent. I have had falafel in various places all over the country and in Europe and this is in my top two! The Falafel is excellent, the portions are large and everything I have tried at Gypsy Queen has been delicious. I've brought several friends to the restaurant and they have all loved it. Gypsy Queen is one of my go-to places whenever I'm in Asheville. I live in Barnardsville and sometimes I go down there just to have some falafel. Try it for yourself! read more

Ordering was simple, at the counter and they deliver food to your table. The food was very fresh and flavorful. We ordered two bowl- a hummus bowl and a rice bowl, both with chicken shawarma. I felt like the bowls could have been filled just a tad more. Seating available both inside and out. Music played inside (a bit loud for me personally). OMG what an absolutely mouth watering sensational place! The fries - to die for. The falafel - better than NYC (and I'm from nyc.) The hummus was perfect and everything was on point. I wish we had this place near me so I could eat here everyday. My little son loved the music while he was munching on his pita bread. I got the Lamb & Beef Shawarma (consisting of mint cabbage slaw, pickles, toom, tomato, parsley and tarator) on a GF pita, but I got it Suzy's Way, meaning with the addition of fries and hot sauce combined with the other ingredients. The flavors were an absolutely beautiful Middle Eastern combo, and taking it Suzy's Way added a slight kick to the flavor. The pita was properly warmed as well. We've had both the chicken and beet shawarma wraps along with Lebanese fries from their food truck and the food was good (especially for a food truck at a busy event), so we decided to try their restaurant in West Asheville this time. Not a lot of ambiance in terms of decor, but it was plenty busy on a Saturday at lunch. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. Since it was a warm, sunny spring day, we sat outside on their front patio. Service was friendly and efficient. The food came pretty quickly. We ordered their famous Lebanese poutine, which is a pile of their fries topped with lamb hashweh with pine nuts, feta cheese and a tangy sauce. Very tasty. Serving size was large enough for leftovers. We also had their signature Gypsy rice bowl with chicken shawarma as the protein. Also very tasty. It was nicely seasoned saffron rice as the base with grilled peppers and onions, the chicken shawarma and a yoghurt sauce on top. The dish could have been a little hotter when it arrived, but the flavor combination was very good and the portion size perfect for lunch. We were full enough we didn't try their baklava, but it looked very good and they were selling lots of it. Reasonable prices. Plenty good, but not quite great. Girl, this is my new favorite spot in AVL. This restaurant is counter service, and there is indoor and outdoor seating to choose from. The vibe is very cute and calm. There are a bunch of snacks and pantry staples available for purchase. The woman who took my order was extremely kind and had a very pleasant aura. Now to the review! I was surprised to see so many folks here around lunch time on a Tuesday. There are SO many vegan options that it's almost overwhelming. Everything vegan is clearly labeled and I love that, I felt extremely safe eating here. I went with the hummus (10/10) and the not-lamb shawarma which I believe had seitan in it. Wow, 10000/10. I got the gypsy rice bowl with lamb and it was a good portion size for the price! The lamb was super tender and the rice was flavorful. The side of yogurt l was a nice bit of acidity and sauce to cut through the dish. I ordered at the restaurant and got take out. I have been to Gypsy Queen countless times. It was the first restaurant I went to in Asheville when I arrived and I am grateful to have found it that early on. While I wish I had given a positive review long ago for those reasons, it now feels important to give a review of their character due to libelous claims against this business. They provide kind, enthusiastic and welcoming service here. There has never been the most remote notion of discrimination and that certainly has not changed. I don't know the motivation for these attacks, and I won't speculate. Take the time to explore a business yourself when you see such extreme statements being made. I'm sure the source of these abysmal claims trail back to someone with a frail ego and no healthy outlets for it. Have been wanting to try Gypsy Queen for a while, but rarely get over to that side of town. Happened to be in that vicinity today around lunch time and decided to try it out! So glad we did! You order at the counter and then they bring your food out to you. We sat down outside and a few other tables sat down after us. We had been waiting maybe 20-25 minutes and the food runner noticed she had brought a couple of other tables food (that sat down after we did) and that we hadn't gotten ours. She went in and put a rush on our order, which had somehow gotten lost, so then our food was out within about five minutes. We weren't in a hurry, so thankfully it was not a big deal. Our food was excellent! We got the small beet salad and split it. I got a chicken shawarma wrap and my husband got the lamb and beef shawarma wrap. We also got a huge slice of vanilla cake with rose water and could barely eat it between the two of us. The food was all very fresh and flavorful! And though we were not complaining about the wait, the staff was super nice and accommodating! They really seem to value their customers!
