Good coffee. Very cool old building with character AND a fireplace! Very nice rooftop, though needs more love. Chairs didnt even have their cushions when we went up there and there was nothing to keep the sun from beating down on us (I know, I know, not a problem most of the year). So why 3 stars? There's no getting around the neighborhood, the dead mouse we had to step over just outside, the dozen or so addicts hovering around. No WAY you want to park your car or lock your bike around here. This isn't their fault, this is Portland city management's fault. But it still takes away from my desire to return to any business around here until the area feels safer and cleaner. Stopped in to try this place based on a friend's recommendation. The exterior was mostly unsuspecting but the hype was real. The exterior is locked and secured but an attendant let me in almost immediately upon arriving at the door. I walked in and was impressed by the comfy and inviting atmosphere. Ordered a sandwich from the main cafe bar and received excellent service from Max. Friendly, fast and very welcoming! Stayed for a few after the fireplace prompted me to linger a bit... would love to come back for a drink (an adult one) and spend time on the amazing rooftop patio when it's warmer outside. Great proximity to the Chinese Garden with ample street parking available. A pleasant surprise in the midst of the mixed bag that is Portland Chinatown. Check it out! read more

Came to grab a coffee and breakfast when visiting a friend nearby. It's attached to a boutique hotel. The ambiance is gorgeous with high ceilings and colourful furniture. It's a nice cozy place to work, visit or just enjoy a quiet meal. While the menu isn't large, there are still a variety of hearty options. The coffee was good and my sandwich was delicious. read more

When my friend and I came here for lunch to chat over some coffee, we came at a bad time as the kitchen was closed since the staff member was on a break. Nonetheless, we still waited and got drinks instead! They have a wide variety of drinks and I also noticed that they had seasonal drinks, which looked amazing. I got a hot chocolate (which I normally never get, but I was craving something sweet, without caffeine) and it was perfect! It was rich and chocolate-y without being an overwhelming sweet. My friends latte was good as well. :) I got the pearl panini for lunch and it was great. A perfect savory and sweet sandwich with the turkey and brie balancing with the apple. The chips were your standard bag of chips and I'm not a fan of pickles so I couldn't tell you that (but it looked good!). Overall, a nice spot to grab a quick bite but I wasn't a huge fan of it as a hangout/chatting spot as it felt too busy (being a hotel lobby) and there wasn't much seating. read more

Stopped here for some coffee (we weren't staying at the hotel). We got their vanilla latte and their dirty chai. The dirty chai was spicy so if you like it that way this is for you! It was fun and unique without being too strong. The vanilla latte was sweet and tasty. Would definitely get again. Their snickerdoodle cookie slapped! Soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside! Special shout out to Andrew who was crushing orders like no one's business while also being probably the most pleasant and happy person during our trip. This is a cute spot adjacent to the hotel lobby. Fun and chic. Can't say anything about parking as we walked here but seemed like street parking wasn't bad. read more

BUSINESS STOLE OUR MONEY: We did not receive the product, were promised a refund multiple times, and their management is NEVER available to speak to. I RARELY write negative reviews but I would caution anyone coming here and would not recommend anyone to go here. It was a seemingly pleasant experience at first, but now, months later, we're out the money we paid with no received items and we continue to get the runaround by everyone we've spoken to at this location. We came here on January 4, a little after 9pm, as a tour guide recommended the stop. When we entered, there was a beautifully decorated bar that shared space with the lobby check in for the hotel. We went to the bartender (Max) and ordered 2 espresso martinis and a mocktail. The total came out to $40 and we added a $20 tip. One important thing to know is that unlike traditional bars, you pay for your drinks "upfront" like a cafe or Starbucks. At the time, with all the liquor displays and such, it was not obviously clear that this was actually a "cafe" and NOT a bar. One espresso martini came out, and about 10 minutes later, the 2nd espresso martini came out. Then we waited - 20 minutes passed, 30 minutes passed, no mocktail for our third friend. We of course were waiting for her drink to arrive before we could enjoy ours. At that point, we were close to maybe 10pm and still hadn't received the 3rd drink. We decided to just leave at that point since we were disappointed in how long it took. We went to the lobby to let Max know that we'd just like a refund and if he could just process it so we can head out. That process also took about another 10-15 minutes since he was having to multitask between training the new hire and process the refund at the cafe. Despite us having already waited close to an hour for one mock-tail, his response to our refund request was for us to wait even longer; we refused, and demanded that he process the refund immediately. Max became visibly irritated by this, and grumbled while walking back to the POS at the bar; at one point we heard him say "are you f** kidding me?" out of frustration. At the POS, Max was having issues processing the refund, and had to call someone on their phone for help. Eventually, he was able to do it and handed us what we thought was a refund receipt. Ultimately, it ended up just being a copy of the order. By January 9th, the refund had not yet processed and we were already back in California. We called again, and spoke with Max. He seemed genuinely apologetic, happy that we called back, and admitted it wasn't his best professionally. He was training a new hire on staff  that needed help at the hotel lobby and it was apparently a time-sensitive issue that a woman was having because she was scared about losing her money since she booked a hotel room through a 3rd party company. He was very kind and said he would escalate to management if he didn't see the refund in 5 days. By February 12th, the refund had not processed yet, so we called back yet again. We spoke to the front desk and they attempted to look up the transaction but were unable to do so because it was over 30 days. They left our phone number to provide to a manager to contact us back, but that never happened. February 25th with still no correspondence, so we were left with no choice, but to file a merchant dispute with the bank. UNFORTUNATELY, because the receipt Max gave us was NOT a refund receipt but just a copy of the order, we were only able to get back $20. The people that run this cafe are crooked. If you need a refund, do not leave before double checking any receipt or documentation stating that a refund was processed -- that was our mistake. NOT RECOMMENDED UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR MONEY STOLEN. read more

This was a really great find by the honey on a day when we had a ton of time before our flight and a couple pieces of luggage to carry round. Enter in The Society Cafe. We ended up getting a few herbal iced teas as well as some canned cider, soda, lacroix, and some tasty coconut drop pastries which we were able to bring up onto the mostly empty rooftop. Essentially killing time until a reasonable hour for us to leave to the airport. The rooftop is lovely and if you're visiting, you should definitely ask to see it. There were spots that had shade and quite a few spots with sun, so it was an all around very lovely seating space surrounded with pampas grass. The Society Cafe is technically a hotel with attached bar/cafe and it boasts a few rooms and some hostel style bunks, but we originally chose it for the fact it carried coconut milk. However, some places find it hard to keep it in stock and tend to run out and the Society Cafe was no different - so I ended up just getting a few teas and sodas. While the bathroom is downstairs, we usually just ordered more drinks when we needed the facilities, and everything considered it was a really nice way to spend a few hours. We will definitely keep them in mind when we're back staying in the area! read more

I've patronized many cafe/coffee shops in NW/SW Portland and this is on the top of my list! The outside of the cafe itself is unassuming but nice, however once you step inside you are transported into a pleasant, comfortable area (with a fireplace no less) in which to have a variety drinks that range from delicious coffee to beer and cocktails (I believe). I have also tried many of their food options which are also very good. The cafe provides an atmosphere which is a comfortable place to start your day or a relaxing place to unwind after a hectic day at work. Every employee I've met is both courteous and thoughtful. Second time visiting the society cafe! The aesthetics is super chic yet a vintage style that isn't really available in Portland cafes. Love the neon lights and the comfortable seating available. Love the lights from the window. I've done work here and it's very relaxing as I've seen other people with their laptops too. Stopped in for a quick bite after a long, exhausting day. (No free parking nearby that I could find, bummer.) The minute I walked in, the coziness of the fireplace and velvet chairs had me feeling more relaxed. I noticed a display on the wall next to the door advertising a wide variety of sightseeing activities around the city, which I will definitely reference next time near the start of my adventure. The staff were so lovely and helpful to this first-timer. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich (only $10!) and was shown to the rooftop seating area within 10 minutes. It was chilly out, but the heaters kept it tolerable while I ate. The view was spectacular and their music choice was perfect. Definitely on my must-visit list for future Portland trips! read more

Vibe is nice! Food is okay. Coffee is good. This would be a great place to work on a laptop for a bit or read a book mid-day. When we went there was pretty much one person making everything , so be patient! It's a walk-up and order at the counter and then they call you to come get your food place. I stayed in the Society and the cafe was a great pit stop everyday. The baristas are super friendly and go out of their way to make you feel special. One morning I had a delicious egg sandwich. Best Lavender coffee, "Sagittarius" Fresh oat milk, and just the right amount of lavender and sweetness. The interior is very welcoming, with friendly baristas. I really enjoyed the aroma inside as well. It gives off this super comforting and soothing smell. It's not overwhelming but perhaps will be a smell I will remember and associate with this specific cafe forever. Loving this place, the windows were letting in all the great natural light. Very welcoming set up and so close to the Chinese gardens, how could you not stop in for a snack. Bring your food and drink and enjoy the views of NW while you shoot the breeze with your buddies. Or step out of your comfort zone a little bit and talk to any of the other guests there. Well then..... I work graveyard shifts down on the Waterfront and needed a pick me up before my 11pm shift start. After a quick search I decided on The Society Cafe (Dutch was a speck closer but required driving back over the bridge and back again) and drove the 3mins down the road. Middle of the night parking in Portland is always easy so there was no issue there. The cafe is located inside of a hotel called the society Hotel. This threw me off a bit because I saw the society hotel but nothing talking about a cafe and it wasn't until I peeked through the front door that I realized that the very corner of the hotel was a cafe. More like a microscopic Nook with some Barista equipment there. The lady was nice in conversation but her face was total resting Barista face. She does not seem happy to be there or to be working for a living at all. I was over apologetic and thankful for her availability and time 15 minutes before closing and still she seemed unenthused. Skip a couple minutes later I order a iced caramel breve and she let me know that there's the same amount of shots and 12 ounces there is in the 16oz so really I just went with the 12 which I'm glad I did the long run. I didn't bother to test my drink after getting it because I figured how can you screw up an iced latte right? Wrong! She sure as heck did or at least a product they provided her did. It was *literally* the worst cup of coffee I have ever had in my entire life. Easy. Even though I watched her make it I wouldn't doubt it if it was made from the leftover coffee from the drip catch and some water. Soooooooo gross. The perfect way to explain is that--like expired old coffee spit that was mixed with white water. Tasted old. Old. Old. Yuck yuck yuck. Keep it at pouring beer.
