Came in last night in a party of 4. Wine selection is pretty. No suggestions on wine pairings. Waitress knew selections in detail. I ordered her recommendation of the Greek seared tuna. Tuna was very sinuous and difficult to eat and seared too lightly. However the flavors of the tuna and stuffing were really fabulous together. My dining companions had steaks and seared scallops which they said were very good. They made a point of saying we had 2 servers. They both did come by frequently to fill up water glasses which is a huge plus. However I asked for my check from then one that was not the lead I guess and he said he could not get it and we waited 10 min before the other server came by to ask for it again. The Sole is one of my favorite places for seafood. They always have great service and the staff is very accommodating to any and all needs. I have come here to celebrate my birthday the past two years and am yet to be disappointed. I have never tried their sushi but they do offer a pretty extensive sushi menu. Their oysters and raw bar items are extremely fresh and super yummy. Some of the desserts are a little rich but there is a very large selection and I certainly haven't tried them all. They do offer menu items that aren't found in the sea but I am yet to try them. If you are craving some chowder this is the place to go. Very, very good. Possibly the best in Worcester. My last visit I ordered the salmon with butternut squash risotto. My fish was cooked perfectly and the risotto was amazing. (I also ordered the chowder, naturally) The portion sizes are big and most meals come with a soup/salad option. If you also order an appetizer there is no way you'll leave there hungry. I dined at the Sole on March 8th. Our servers were G and Brandon. We were a party of 7 celebrating my birthday. From the moment we were seated, the experience was underway and it did not disappoint. Our servers were attentive, knowledgeable, professional & just a fun pair. Some of us took advantage of the Restaurant Week specials. Others ordered from the main menu. Each course was perfectly timed, presented with care and all was so delicious. Not one instance of dissatisfaction. The quality of food, cocktails, desserts and the level of service were impeccable. Let's preface this with saying I was a bit weary at first after reading some of the reviews on here and, no offense, the establishment being in Worcester. My gf and I had reservations this evening for 5:30pm, and we were a few mins early and sat right away regardless. Two servers/waitresses was a bit overwhelming at first, but we were quickly put at ease by how genuinely nice the two women were, i believe their names were Yana and Nicole, both were phenomenal. They made a few suggestions and were along the lines of what we had looked up on the menu before arriving. The bottled water was I'm positive better than Worcester tap water and priced well ($7, its a rather large bottle of water). We had started the meal off w the goat cheese crostini as an appetizer, and that was absolutely amazing, try it...trust me. We had ordered drinks, and those too were amazing and I'm not a big drinker. After sitting a bit we ordered more food including our shared entree - we ordered the Firecracker Sushi, and let me tell you how much my gf raved about how good it was...she doesn't eat seafood but I talked her into trying it and she LOVED it. Our entree was the Baked Stuffed Shrimp & Fillet. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, and the stuffing was great. I love shrimp and seafood type stuffing, so I had high expectations, and they were met entirely. The filled was cooked to my gf's desired doneness of medium well, and I like mine medium. It was cooked flawlessly. The only thing I would say could have been better, but it was still great, was the asparagus could've been cooked a bit more...I'm not a fan of crunchy asparagus, but it was still amazing. Overall, it was a complete success, and we have added this to our pricier tier of dining, well worth the $150 we had spent. If you are looking for an amazing eatery and want a good atmosphere, try this place. You won't regret it. read more

after a recommendation from a coworker I decided to drive out after work. I had a crab cake app and a bowl of seafood chowder. The crab cake was tiny, the crab tasted a little old, it was quite spicy too. The seafood chowder tasted very fishy without much else for flavor. One piece of clam was inedible it was so chewy and foul tasting. The place left me with a bad taste in my mouth and feeling unsatisfied. The Wachusetts County Ale was great, the servers were ok but not terribly friendly. Maybe I visited the wrong time of year, but the haddock I had at the Holidy Inn I would take over that chowder any day. read more

My first visit to the sole. Parking wasn't too bad but it is limited being that the restaurant is always busy. My boyfriend and I made a reservation on the website for 5:30 but we showed up early and they still accomidated us. I overheard another couple had an hour wait so I recommend doing a reservation if you can. Food was amazing! We started out with half a dozen oysters, rainbow maki, clam chowder and a salad. The rainbow maki was delicious! There is just the right amount of cream cheese to melt in you mouth yum! For our entrees, I had the tuna steak Barcelona and my boyfriend had the seafood sauté. My steak was cooked as promised, med-rare (how it comes) you don't need a knife because it was so tender. I have to admit i took most of the feta cheese out, it was a lot. It didn't over power the steak. Sides were delicious also. The seafood sauté incorporated scallops, shrimp, and lobster with a squid ink pasta was delicious! Bisque was excellent but for the price it better be! Scallops not so much, colleague did enjoy the casserole but said it was very rich. All I can say is... my god.. the lobster roll was incredible .. since this is all I had and wanted.. and ended up eating 3. Being an Arizonian I need my lobster fix and thank did it for me.!! After reading many reviews about The Sole Proprietor, I wasn't sure it would live up to my expectations; however, it did more than just live up to its acclaim!! The food was incredible! The coconut shrimp, crab cakes, and clams casino were a perfect starting point for the meal. Because there were five of us dining I was able to taste the Tempura Soft Shell Crab, Crab Stuffed Shrimp, Rare Tuna Steak, and Blackened Haddock!! I was in town touring UMASS Medical school with my daughter we stumbled upon the Sole Proprietor afterwards. What a find. The food and service was exceptional. Everything we tried was awesome. The sushi roll appetizer was surprisingly good. The raw oysters and cherry stones were extremely fresh and had that briny sweet taste that you look for. Manhattan clam chowder was the soup of the day and it was delicious. I had the blackened swordfish for my entree and my daughter had a large salad. The salad was good but she was jealous of my swordfish so I gave her half. The portions were very generous and even with sharing we were very full and skipped desserts. The bar is beautiful and the cocktails were made very well. I will definitely be back. Great job! read more

This was the first time I had been here and I'll definitely be back. I had the baked seafood platter and my brother had the fresh swordfish. Both entrees were fantastic! Each item on my seafood platter was delicious - the haddock, lobster tail, clams, crab cake and shrimp. I also upgraded to the pear/walnut salad which was also great. They were crispy on the outside and soft/moist in the center. Very tasty! 3. Stuffed jumbo shrimp 4/5 . Shrimp were a bit bland. Maybe serving them with some type of sauce instead of over rice and spinach would give a different flavor/texture. Sangria 2/5 . I was expecting good quality sangria, but the bar tender made/mixed it right in front of me. Good sangria is pre-made and ready to be served. I do not recommend you trying it. I brought my son to have fresh seafood because we moved from Framingham to Missouri 39 years ago, and we never could get real seafood. He went crazy every time he took a bite, he'd be doing this yummmmmm. With everything. He got two lobster tails, mussels, crab cake, and a side of the big shrimp cocktail (which he devoured within 3 minutes). I got the lobster and filet mignon. That was GREAT, it was soooooo DELICIOUS. Now the other thing I have to know is what is the name of that bottle water. I've never tasted better water anywhere. Please tell me where I can get that????? The staff was great! Took my wife there for our anniversary. Most of the food was just ok, nothing great. I got the Wellfleet oysters and they were loaded with salt and had no flavor. I ordered the "1lb" King Crab Legs and they were the most expensive and disappointing I have ever had, I was given 2 small legs, way under a pound and they were also loaded with salt and had no flavor. This place is way over priced and their food is way over rated. The only thing great at this place was the staff. I didn't complain about the food and left a great tip, but I will never go back there. The Sole for years was the best restaurant in Worcester but It has gone downhill. the service was absolutely terrible and the food was disappointing. filet ordered medium was well done and vegetables on both dinners were overdone. We had to ask for bread, the main came before we finished our salads, then those salad plates didn't get cleared for a long time. I asked for a glass of wine with my dinner when we ordered the food and didn't get it until I was more than halfway through the meal. I wish i had a photo. I wouldn't recommend eating any large fish anyway, too much mercury. My point is that the chefs should have seen this. I don't remember the chefs name. Quite a nice spot, made even better by the large parking lot! Great vibe and interior design. The full-belly fried clam poboy was superb (twas my first time having full belly clams, which were melt-in-yer-mouth good), as was the firecracker sushi app with Lobster. The NE Clam Chowder was not remarkable at all though. On the thinner side and just lacking a bit in character. Service was embarrassingly bad...waitress was incredibly forgetful and she only had a couple tables as we were there mid-afternoon and the place was empty. Let me start by saying "I have always LOVED this place" One of my all time favorites. We have been coming here for over 15 years and never had a bad experience. My husband and I went on Friday evening and we enjoyed some of the changes. However not all of them are positive. That is the reason I feel compelled to write a review. The Sole has always been on the pricey side, but that is why you get exceptional quality. I really enjoy their salmon and have ordered the same meal many times in the past. Only exception is now the $27.00 plate is void of any sides, no longer does it come with a salad, starch and vegetable. You only get a smaller salad and no sides, they have you add them on A'la carte. Its the same quantity and the same price. But no longer is it an meal. You will get a piece of fish and a smaller salad/soup. ( the salad has changed over the years, and by the way, its not a better salad) For the first time ever, my Salmon although cook correctly, it was on the colder side. Usually the plates are hot to keep the temp up in the food. This time my plate was not even warm. Most likely due to the new addition of the cold kale garnish. On a positive note, the side I ordered ( $12.00 Lobster Risotto) was exceptionally good. If we ever go back, I would definitely order that again. With the change in the atmosphere and the menu, we were hoping that the same Ol'e dessert menu had also changed. Nothing new here! It didn't and hasn't in a VERY long time. They should consider that, it is long over due. In the past a meal for 2 w/ drinks was somewhere around $150.00 this time a little over $180.00. That is before tip. I think this new tactic will help cover the costs associated with there newly renovated kitchen space. But honestly. Not a Fan! Although, we love the place, not sure If we will be back. I can't speak on the quality of their food because I did not eat there, but I was disappointed by the staff. I went in last night (a Wednesday) with a friend of mine to go grab drinks and when we entered the hosts asked us how many, I turned and saw the main bar was completely full and I told them "2, just drinks though". One of them grabbed menus and started to guide us to a table right next to the bar. The bar was full and the table was next to the bar so I thought it made sense, but the menus he had threw me off so to be sure I reiterated that we were here for just drinks. He nodded his head and still had us sit in the booth next to the bar and left us at the table with the food menus. I assumed he had heard me, but maybe not. When our waiter came by to take our orders I said again the we were just here for drinks. He became strangely serious and told us that he would let it slide this time but not to do this again. To which my friend and I were very confused. He told us we shouldn't have sat here if we were just getting drinks. I informed him that I had told the host that we were here for just drinks and the host had just put us there. He was visibly not convinced but he took our drink orders anyway and we did not see that waiter the rest of the night. Instead we had the company of someone older in a chef-type outfit who was even less happy that we were sitting at this table having drinks. He tried to prompt us to buy appetizers and would leer at us every time he walked by the table. He did as much as he could to scold us for sitting there without saying a word. I am disappointed in the communication of the waitstaff. We would have moved if they had asked, but no we get the stink eye instead. The waitstaff should have informed one another of the mistake made by the host so maybe we wouldn't have gotten the stink eye? I'm also confused by why they were so rudely intense about our sitting at a booth right next to the bar, as there were empty booths on either side of us the entire time we were there, we weren't taking booths away from other customers. read more

My wife tried to remind me that we didn't like it there but I pressed on and in we went. It was very noisy (as I recalled after not going for several years) so I asked for a quiet table if possible?They pointed to a table in the center of the room but we suggested the table back in the corner instead. It was not set up but they decided that seating us there might be ok anyways... Our waitress was excellent, but the food was average and we experienced long gaps between each course. And, maybe call me cheap but we were splitting a salad and an entree. In better restaurants they will often split the plates, not these guys. One plate and no extra plates so we were picking off the same plate . Bottom line, I think we need another sea food spot in Worcester. I had lunch at the Sole yesterday with 4 others. The service was very good and the food was fair. 2 of us had the 1/4 lb lobster roll which was well received. We also had the tuna appetizer which was very expensive for three small pieces of tuna. The waitress , to her credit, did advise that there were only 3 pieces to this order. We also had the fried octopus which was very oily and tasteless. The Caesar salad was plain and a small serving. Overall the food was poor to fair and vastly overpriced. read more

Have been working in the Worcester area for about 2 years, and just recently ventured out to Sole Proprietor to check out the seafood. Friends from Boston mentioned it to me, so why wouldn't I check it out when I'm already in the area (although I'm late to the game)? Can't miss the giant crab hovering above the restaurant - don't worry you'll come out alive. There's a huge parking lot - good for big parties and events. We went on a weekday afternoon, so was seated immediately. We had the crab cake appetizer, which was kind of disappointing. I didn't know where the crab meat was as everything was blended in so fine. It also wasn't fresh. We shared a bowl of the lobster bisque, which was phenomenal. It was full of flavor, not too creamy, and chunks of lobster meat were found. The friend also ordered the haddock lunch with mashed and half corn on cob. It was light and delicious. The fish was flaky and tender. I ordered the beef strips with stuffed shrimp, and mashed and corn on cob on the side. The beef strips were too salty for my liking. Good thing the mashed was there to balance the saltiness. The stuffed shrimp was good. I wished there were more than 2 of them. read more

For a seafood restaurant, I expect them to know how to prepare fish and cook fish correctly. My recent trip was dissapointing. I ordered the Salmon Oscar. The salmon fillet was very thin coming from the tail end of the fillet. So thin that it would be difficult to cook. They were unable to. The salmon was dry and inedible. What's worse is the waiter never came by to ask how my salmon was. Even when the check was presented, the waiter failed to ask how my dinner was. I should have sent it back, but that's inconvenient and you never know what you'll get back. The rest of the meal was satisfactory. The Pear salad was good. As a chance to go out, have a nice dinner and to splurge, it was very disappointing. read more

This restaurant serves really fresh and delicious fish. We've had both large family gatherings and just dinner for two with equal enjoyment. Yummy fish stews, fried fish and main dinners, without complaint. We've occasionally been lucky without a reservation at odd times but don't count on that or you could be sorely disappointed. Sushi rolls are excellent even though this is not a sushi restaurant. The seafood chopped salad is a giant and AMAZING fatty delight: olives, lump crabs, shrimp, avocado, bacon. Like I said, fatty. Have not been disappointed by a single thing on the menu. Surf and Turf stands out as does the trout. You can't go wrong eating here. read more
