Lively vibe with all the folks dining, imbibing, chatting en masse. It was just okay, not overly flavorful. Low ratio of proteins & veg to garlic rice. I felt bad tossing half the rice. Would have been great if there were overeasy eggs to polish it off.

She turns out to be the daughter of the owners so it's a Korean mom and Pop place where mom and daughter are front of house and the father is Chef in the kitchen. So the food is cooked by a Korean AJJusshi! I asked for best recommendations and I was told that the kimchi fried rice was good as was the spicy chicken and the spicy pork. And then I asked because I saw a takeout order in the back, and was told that was the jjampong that her mom was taking home for dinner. I saw the traditional Korean comfort food jjajiangmyun on the menu so I decided I would order that no matter what. Because she told me that her father makes the sauce. And that's very important to know. I ordered the kimchi fried rice and an order of the dumplings which I could've had boiled or fried. I wanted to see how good the fried dumplings were and have to tell you that crisp on them was outstanding. Just outstanding. And the dipping soy sauce with vinegar and chopped green onions was perfection. I love that the food came out in the wide metal bowls -- which is quite common for a kind of Korean restaurants that I love eating at. The kimchi is made in house and that's when I decided I needed to try with the Mom was trying to. The jumping broth was thick and flavorful with so many of the best ingredients for spicy seafood soup: that a couple of large mussels and shrimp and the zucchini was cut thickly which I always appreciate, they had oyster mushrooms as well as tender pork chunks and bok choy and the right kind of noodles. Some restaurants try to use udon noodles as a shortcut but that's not the right noodles for jjampong and jjajiangmyun. The portions were really generous so I decided to have the jjajiangmyun packed up to go instead. The prices have to be mentioned because they were very reasonable relative to other Korean restaurants. Next time I will try the seafood pajun because the owner and I discussed how they made it and I'm excited because their approach is similar to my mom's: too thick, keep it crispy, and lots of seafood. They also had a beer on tap, which was served cold and was refreshing on a warm evening, and that I saw they had a cooler full of Korean Soju (the brand Jinro which is has a BTS member as it's Brand ambassador) and some good makkoli! I enjoyed the leisure of reading a book on the patio while eating. One of my favorite ways to do dinner. But the food is so good I am looking forward to coming back with friends.

The service was very attentive and fast. We didn't wait too long for our food. The area that Kimchee & Rice is very nice and new, and the restaurant itself is very nice looking as well. A good amount of seating, and it started filling up around lunchtime, when we were there. Kimchee & Rice is definitely worth checking out (and putting on your list of Korean restaurants if you live in the Portland area).

It's worth ordering even if you're not normally a tea drinker. We started with the Xiao Long Bao, and they were fantastic. The wrappers were delicate, the filling was juicy, and each dumpling was packed with rich, flavorful broth. A great way to begin the meal. Next came the Spicy Crispy Fish with String Beans, which was my favorite dish of the day. The fish was perfectly crispy while remaining tender inside, and the combination of Sichuan peppercorns, dried chilies, garlic, and crisp green beans created incredible flavor. It had just the right amount of heat and that signature numbing sensation that authentic Sichuan cuisine is known for. The Little Hot Pot was the centerpiece of the meal. Served over its own tabletop burner, it arrived loaded with thinly sliced beef, shrimp, mussels, tofu puffs, mushrooms, and vegetables in a deeply flavorful broth. It was generous enough to share and stayed hot throughout the meal, making it a fun and interactive experience from start to finish. I also ordered one of the cocktails, which was refreshing, well-balanced, and paired nicely with the spicy dishes. The service was friendly, attentive, and paced perfectly. My only small suggestion would be to replace the printed menus, as they're beginning to show noticeable wear. It's a minor detail, but fresh menus would better match the quality of the food and overall presentation. Overall, Ding & Spice is one of Portland's standout destinations for authentic Sichuan cuisine. I proceed with my order and ask for stir fried veg instead of rice since I try not to eat too many carbs. Kay says it'll be an upcharge and we are fine with this. Our food comes both with sides of rice and we remind them mine should be veggies to which the foodrunner apologizes and takes my rice back. Kay comes back and lectures us on how the rice is free and they'll "do the veggies for me this time" like it's some big favor, not something we're paying extra for with no issue. The ambiance is comfortable. There were three in our party for a 5:00 weekday dinner. Our favorite choice was the Khao Soy Chicken. Adding sticky rice to the dish made it even more delightful with the sauce poured over it. The chicken wings did not seem to have as much meat on them as one might expect. The Don Delfino Daiquiri was exceptional. The Phon Lamai Sour was very good. And it was not sour.
