F2. Stewed Soup with Tender Chicken and American Ginsen - 5/5
    Yvonne Y.

My friend raved about this place, so hubby and I had to check it out--conveniently close to his hairdresser. We rolled in at 12:45 PM on a Saturday, and it was packed. Lucky us, we snagged one of the last two tables. I ordered the Hainan chicken (friend-approved), while hubby went all out with a stewed American ginseng chicken soup and black bean pork ribs steamed rice on a lotus leaf. Food came out in record time. The stewed soup? Absolute 5/5, but blink and you'll miss it--it's a one-person deal. The house soup? No comparison to the stewed soup. You'd probably think it tastes fine if you hadn't tried their stewed soup first. Hainan chicken? Delicious, but lukewarm rice is a crime. 4/5. Now for hubby's steamed rice... it was so good that by the time I reached for it, all that was left was a spoonful of mercy. That spoonful? Lotus-infused bliss. Pork ribs? Tender perfection. Easy 5/5. We're definitely coming back to explore the menu. Service was friendly, the decor simple and spotless. Two big thumbs up!

Today was a miss , I ordered the8 treasures steamed rice in Lotus leaf and it was sooooo dry. No taste and I actually found hard stuff like shells of a crab in it. The service is ok. The restaurant is very modern . Noticed some flies. Check the video.

Crowned as the "soup king" in our family who drank the most soup when mom would make it, I have long wanted to come to The Soup. I finally made it here today with my parents for lunch. The vibe here is clean, modern, and casual. Service was warm and friendly. The food is good! Parents got a couple of the signature dishes: hainan chicken rice, and abalone shiitake mushrooms chicken rice along with the soup of the dad. As I had eaten breakfast not long ago, I just wanted soup, veggies, and some tofu. The tofu appetizer was alright, and the hainan chicken rice was very good. The soups were amazing! All the soups look legit and the watercress pork bone soup I had was very tasty...totally hit the spot. I pride myself in making really good Cantonese style soup that's simmered on the stove for many hours, and I can confidently say that The Soup's chefs know their stuff. Good ingredients too. We'll be back!

S4. Eight Treasure Steamed Rice in Lotus Leaf

A Chinese spot specializing in traditional soups and steamed rice dishes! We got their popular Hai Nan Chicken Rice; the chicken was alright but it was the rice that brought this entire dish down. I would say it's equal parts rice and chicken that makes this dish good and the rice was just so mid that when you eat it with the chicken, it throws the whole thing off. The chicken itself was ok though and very soft & easy to eat. We also shared the Eight Treasure Steamed Rice in Lotus Leaf and this one had me questioning why it was $18 because it was so basic and bland. Anyways, I wouldn't come back.

Hainan chicken rice with a side of soup, and watercress-gizzard soup
    Squeaks L.

The Hainan chicken rice reminded us of home (Singapore), with the bonus of the steamed chicken being deboned and having a sprinkle of sesame seeds. The soup was not as flavorful as hoped, and it was missing the signature chili sauce on the side, but they did a great job with the ginger-scallion relish. The watercress soup was tasty but a rather small portion for the price. Service was excellent, with the lone waitress greeting and attending to the customers with a pleasant smile.

Steamed rice in lotus leaf with braised pork feet.

The food: 1. Steamed rice in lotus leaf with braised pork feet. Small portion. The braised pork feet had a lot of pieces that were not tender and not fatty. The rice was mushy and there wasn't much flavor. 2. Steamed rice in lotus leaf with pork rib and preserved black bean. Small portion. The pork rib was overall okay, but lacking in flavor. It had a fair amount of meat and cartilage on the pieces. The rice was also mushy. 3. Beef brisket noodle. Small portion with beef brisket that is tough and the meat is lean. The noodles are okay, but on the overcooked side. Customer service: There was one waitress who was slow with taking our order, didn't check up on us, and the food came out slowly. We had to get her attention several times because we needed a refill on tea and wanted to check on why the food was taking so long to come out. Other tables that came after us were getting their food before us. Didn't get a thank you or bye from the waitress while we were leaving even though she watched us leave. Other thing to note is I don't like how close the tables are together. The person sitting next to me was within arms reach if I stretched out my arm. It felt too close to me. They could definitely space out the tables a little more. Overall, I don't see myself coming back here again due to the mediocre food and the lackluster customer service. Oh, and they don't honor their specials during holidays even though it was posted. And if you want wonton with your beef brisket it's a $5 upcharge that wasn't disclosed until I asked.

Lotus leaf with chicken and rice - 3/5, chicken with bones, mushrooms and bok choy. Not too flavorful, not that great. I didn't eat much and was watching my dad struggle with the bones haha. Lotus leaf with braised pork and rice - 3/5, pork belly is super fatty. The sauce is tasty but not too salty. I liked this better than the chicken Soup with mushrooms, fish maw and chicken - 4/5, good soup. Mushrooms are good, soup was flavorful. Some of the large chicken are too tough to eat, but it's all in the soup so it's okay to not eat. Soup with conch and sea coconut - 4/5, good soup. Sea coconut and conch add a nice flavor to the soup. Gai lan - 1/5, old and tough. Bad.

Lately, it's been cold and rainy which calls for Chinese comfort food...but healthy Chinese comfort food that's stewed and steamed. I mean, I would eat HK baked pork chops smothered with creamy tomato sauce and melty cheese on the regular but acid reflex is no joke the older you get. The Soup opened in the summer 2022 with takeout, delivery, and indoor dining available. M E N U Small menu with about 20 items. Specialties: Cantonese tonic soups, lotus leaf steamed rice, hainan chicken rice, and several clay pot dishes. To me, this is like Chinese village food. No msg used. F O O D * 卤水大肠 Marinated Pork Intestine ($11.99) // 4 stars: http://tinyurl.com/4rwbyvz7 Meltingly soft and flavorful with a kiss of sweet umami flavor. It was delicious! Just wish there was more than a palmful worth. * F1 西洋菜陳腎燉豬錚 - Stewed Soup w/ watercress, pig's feet, duck gizzard ($13.99) // 2.5 stars: http://tinyurl.com/mrcbdu33 Hot and soothing with tough pieces of pork and several slices of duck gizzard. The pig's feet was missing. This soup is like the complimentary soup you receive at a Cantonese resto. IMO, this was overpriced for the individual portion. The other soups with ingredients like abalone, conch, squab, etc. seem more worth it. * S5 梅菜红烧腩仔荷叶蒸饭 - Steamed Rice in Lotus Leaf w/ braised pork [belly], preserved veggies ($17.99) // 4.5 STARS: http://tinyurl.com/4j23tftx I'm a fan of mei cai kou rou so this my fav of the two. The braised pork belly was tender with a good meat: fat ratio with the tang of the preserved mustard greens cutting through the rich, meatiness. Not overly fatty like how the original dish can be. The fragrant lotus leaf infuses an earthy flavor to the steamed rice and the accompanying baby bok choy was fresh and crisp. * S7 豉汁排骨荷叶蒸饭 - Steamed Rice in Lotus Leaf w/ pork ribs, fermented black beans ($15.99) // 4 stars: http://tinyurl.com/u934tp4s ++ $4 chinese sausage Savory bone-in spareribs (not fatty) and rich morsels of salty-sweet chinese sausage. Adding the chinese sausage was the right move for a better meat: carb ratio. S E R V I C E Understaffed with one lady running the FOH plus she was putting together takeout and delivery orders. She's brusque but gets the job done. It wasn't busy at the time for indoor dining so prompt food service (received our order in about 10 minutes). A M B I A N C E Formerly Sweethoney, The Soup has the same vibe - bright and modern with TVs. There's two levels but the upper level doesn't seem to be utilized. P A R K I N G Challenging street parking at peak hours. Overall, if you're looking for nourishing soup tonics and health(ier) Chinese comfort food, check out The Soup!

This was the first restaurant I've been to with traditional Chinese soups that a Chinese grandma would make! The presentation was beautiful and the prices reflect the quality. The server spoke Chinese as did all the patrons who were there while I was dining. The rice dishes that my friend and I had were tasty and generously portioned. We had enough to bring home for another meal. The soup was yummy, but I wouldn't recommend eating the meat in it. Just leave it there to flavor the soup. I'd come here again and would love to bring my parents or in-laws.

S9. Steamed Rice in Lotus Leaf with Abalone, Chicken, Shiitake Mushroom, and Jujube
    Alex L.

This cuisine reminds me of the homestyle dishes my Chinese parents used to make--less salt and processed oil, perhaps perceived as "bland" by some, but to me, it's the epitome of comforting homestyle food. Despite noticing the restaurant's lower-than-normal average review, I decided to give it a try. While many negative reviews mention service issues, I found it passable. One suggestion would be to have small bottles of soy sauce and chili oil at each table, especially for dishes like lotus leaf rice, allowing customers to season to their liking without asking. The soup is a perfect 10/10, reminiscent of my mom's cooking--a truly healthy dish. The lotus rice claypot gets a 9/10, and the tofu fish stew an 8/10. With good food portions served promptly at an affordable price, I rate the overall experience a solid 9/10. If I want Chinese comfort food again on a chilly night, I'd come back here again.

Came here on a Tuesday afternoon with no wait with a group of 3. Good: - The food comes out really quickly - The chicken soup was pretty good - I liked the abalone and it was super chewy - it was very hearty too Bad: - I wasn't a big fan of the coconut soup - it was sweet but also savory and it was really weird - also there wasn't a lot of food for the price. - Pretty casual place - Just a little too expensive for the portion size Overall this place was unique, though I might not come again since the food is a little weird.

    Kristina K.

First time trying this restaurant for lunch with my friends. It's an Asian restaurant with a unique menu. We ordered S2, S5, coconut stew, chicken soup, and eggplant. Everything was so delicious except the coconut stew which was underwhelming and for a food lover like me, I just couldn't stomach it. The foods came quick but the service needs to be better, you have to call a few times to ask for a chili sauce or get your water refilled. The place is nice and clean. Pay parking is everywhere. I won't come back since it's quite far but you should give a try but even it looks tempting and unique, avoid the whole coconut stew.

The Soup in San Francisco caught my eye while looking for a lunch place. They're mainly serving Chinese tonic soups and Lotus Leaf Steamed Rice. I like to try them out. The service is not bad compared to most of the Chinese restaurants. I like the dining room. It is very clean and comfortable.

Every thing was as good as the last. They have a pretty extensive menu I wanted to try it all. Sadly I had to settle for Hot and Sour Soup, Wonton soup, Pork Xiao Long Bao 8 Pcs, Chicken Xiao Long Bao 8 Pcs, (8Pcs) Pork Dumpling with Sesame Sauce and Red Chili Oil (6Pcs), Numb & spicy pork Bao, Green Onion Pancake, (Sweet) Red Bean Paste Pockets. We had it family style. The 3 of us shared it all. There was plenty to go around. None of us left hungry. I can't even pick a favorite. Maybe the numb and spicy which wasn't that spicy. It was just so good and flavorful. The soup dumplings were amazing. So much perfect flavor. They held together until the bite. So good. The hot and sour soup was plenty tasty. Not the best I've ever had but certainly among the best. The only thing I will say is that one of my companions can't have seaweed. The wonton soup was amazing but full of seaweed. It wasn't listed on the menu and we have never had seaweed in any other wonton soup so didn't know to ask if it could be left out. That was sad. All she could do was have a tiny spoon of the broth to taste it. The green onion pancake was very good. The red bean paste pockets use the same dough but filled with sweet red bean paste. They were a perfect way to end the meal. Next time I'm in the city I will visit again. Loved it all. It was worth taking the time to visit and eat there.

I ordered the Lion's Mane Mushroom. *A lovely note for the vegans and lactose-intolerant: there is a dairy-free option for the Thai iced tea (made with coconut milk). Given that this was a Michelin guide restaurant, we had certain expectations of the place and sadly we were disappointed. While the service was friendly and the server knowledgeable on the menu, the service itself was severely lacking in detail you'd expect from a $$$$ type of place. Our drinks came out first, followed by the appetizer, then came EVERYTHING ELSE all at once. Papaya Salad Daikon Soup Trio of rice (purple, brown, white) Curry + protein (duck for my friend, lion's mane mushroom for me) We tried to tackle the soup first. It came in an artsy looking bowl with undulated/rouged edges that was awkward to drink from but equally awkward to spoon the soup from. The daikon was VERY WOODY. Both my friend and I awkwardly spit out splintery fibers and left them on our plate. Some of my daikon chunks were fine but my poor friend had double the amount of woody mass collecting on her plate which was really unsightly, especially when you're supposed to be at a nice place. I can't say I've ever encountered this with daikon before at a restaurant. It's pretty easy to see which parts of the daikon are too mature to use. Next we tried to get on to our entree as that was cooling quickly. Unfortunately the curries were already somewhat congealed by the time we made our way to it. The vegan one was pretty good, but again, I had some woody bits in my food. I don't know if that's from the mushroom or if it was from another ingredient but the splintery clumps amassing on the side of our plates was not what we had imagined we'd be doing at a Michelin guide restaurant.... My friend's duck wasn't much better. She complained about the awkward texture and wound up spitting out half of that one her plate. -not to mention, her meal was served to her without a steak knife. After waiting for much too long, she got up to go request a knife and walked the knife back to the table like a psycho. I'm not trying to sound entitled here, but when a restaurant is supposed to be "nice" and has "$$$$", you sort of expect a certain caliber of service. Having to go ask for a knife when you ordered a chunk of meat does seem like a miss. For what it's worth, the curries for both of us had a unique blend of flavors. My friend had a penang currty sweetened with lychee. I don't remember what kind of curry mine was, but it was tasty with a kick in the end. Curry to rice ratio was perhaps 1:3. We had to ask for extra curry to accompany the protein and rice to balance everything out. It would have just been so pasty and dry otherwise (you know, since everything was already congealed...) By the time we got around to our papaya salad, it had gone from chilled to room temp. While it was tasty, it wasn't as refreshing as the salad could be. We're not sure why all courses were served at once, or if that's how this specific lunch service goes? The best course of the day was 100% the dessert. Order the vegan dessert! "Mango-sticky rice ice cream". It was a homemade mango ice cream with coconut milk base. It sounds basic but these ingredients were masterfully put together to create something truly unique. Not sure where the rice was in this whole situation, but who cares! This dessert was incredible! Lightly sweet, creamy and freshing. It arrived like a piece of art, like a glossy, glimmering mango sculture. The way that chilled mango puree spilled over, coating the ice cream underneath... It clung on to the ice cream layer just barely coating it for most perfect combination of sweet and creamy. It was unfortunate I got the last one for the day. My friend had the cheesecake which she said was tasty but not mindblowing like my mango ice cream. It also was... not so glorious. In fact, it looked small and flat, like a half used stack of mini post-it notes. All in all, it was a fun experience. The dishes were familiar favorites with a creative twist. For $45, it wasn't bad but I don't know about coming back for the $$$$ dinner experience based on this visit. Maybe we'll be back for the $40-$45 prefixe again in the future.
