    Eel and Chinese Sausage
    David L.

A few of us were in the area and looking at what to eat, and clay pot crossed our mind as we drove on past. We entered and got seated right away, it was an earlier Friday night so the place was not that crowded, a few patrons and delivery drivers coming in and out, but the ambiance was nice, they had your typical Chinese music playing on the TV, while the chefs cooked up the meals in the back, and the customers just chatting away. The 3 of us decided to order some items that were recommended, and went with the Salted Patty and fish, Spare ribs, and Eel and Chinese sausage clay pots. They came out surprisingly faster then we had imagined, knowing how long they usually take from videos, but I'd imagine they had them probably ready to go and needed to add the final touches of the ingredients. I actually enjoyed each of them, my friends felt the Pork Spare ribs were good, but I personally enjoyed the Salted fish and Eel + Chinese Sausage combo, maybe because it reminded me of home. There were some other items I wanted to try out, and I'll likely come back and give them a go next time!

Came here with my brothers for some clay pot action at dinnertime. We were seated right away and presented with a simple, straightforward menu with all the usual clay pot options. The place had plenty of tables inside and was clean. Service was quick, and the staff were attentive. For clay pots, we ordered the Taishan yellow eel, preserved Chinese sausage with pork and duck, and the homemade lamb stew. Everything came out piping hot, as it should, with a lot of rice at the bottom. As soon as we started eating, we noticed the rice was getting too dry. Usually, we are able to pour a little more of that savory soy sauce for your liking, but none was given, so it quickly became dry and hard. Luckily, they do give you some in-house soup, which was a clear meat broth with some chinese bean curds. We used the soup to mix it in, so that the rice was more manageable to eat. The eggplant we ordered also helped out since it was more soupy than braised, which turned out to be a blessing. Even though the clay pots we had leaned a little dry and the meat portions were light, the flavors were still satisfying once the rice was mixed with the complementary soup.

Came to Claypot House with some friends for dinner, and we were seated right away upon arrival. The service was great and the food came out quickly. We ordered 3 claypots to share and they were decently priced. What I liked most was the jalapeno soy sauce, which gave everything a little kick. It is a small restaurant in the Richmond, and overall it was a good and quick option if you are craving Chinese food. Great casual spot to eat with friends or family!

Our clay pots were delicious (salted fish with diced chicken, and house special lamb stew), with perfectly crusty rice. We like spice, so added a little of their pickled peppers and pickle juice to our clay pots. The pea sprouts we ordered (off menu) were tender, with a little garlic. Appreciated the free tea and soup. Service was friendly and efficient. Basic tables and dinnerware made it feel even more authentic.

My family and I have been coming here for years, and we always enjoy our meals. Everything we order is consistently flavorful, and I especially appreciate the soy marinated jalapenos they have on each table. A drizzle of their spicy soy sauce in each clay pot dish is so tasty! Since I love spice, I usually grab a piece of marinated jalapeno with almost every bite. We've never had any complaints; everything has been solid and consistent with each visit. It's also a nice bonus that they provide free soup to customers. I've honestly never seen this place completely packed, so they only have about 2-3 people working, but they get the job done efficiently. The interior isn't modern, but it adds to the charm. I guess it's true what they say, "the more run-down spots often have the best food" haha.

It's been so cold here that I started craving claypot rice. We came over and got a pot of steaming hot claypot rice with spareribs and various preserved meats. The rice on the bottom was slightly crispy but not burnt--perfect. My hubby doesn't like the preserved meats so he opted for the steamed spareribs rice instead and this is steamed inside a piece of lotus leaf. A very good option and I may follow next time. This meal came with two very hot (paper) bowls of house soup filled with pieces of winter melons and carrots. Service was quick and polite. Located on Clement and 11th Ave.

Nostalgic and authentic! Really filled my claypot craving, and will return for some traditional canto herbal canto soups. They had plenty of soups on the menu that my mom made for me growing up. Pretty quiet on a Thursday night. Many Chinese elders were in to enjoy dinner, which is a great sign on the food quality. We enjoyed the yellow eel and Chinese sausage pot and the sausage, duck, preserved meats, and fish fillet pot. One claypot was crispier than the other and had more rice crust. The restaurant gave us complimentary soups which I enjoyed a lot. I think there is either a secret menu or just on request to order sautéed veggie greens because some tables around us ordered different plates of greens but I didn't see it on the menu. Lots of traditional Chinese desserts on the menu which were tempting, but we were too stuffed to order any dessert. Good spot!

Hole in the wall chinese restaurant focusing on clay pot rice. Very generous portions of meat compared to other clay pots I've tried but it's also a little more pricey side. Atmosphere is average and it's generally not too full. Today we tried the House Special Combination and Spareribs and Preserved Chinese Sausage Clay Pots. We also ordered the Taisan Duck. The House Special includes yellow eel which is a Chinese delicacy in the Taisan Province. Taste a little like small cuts of fish. I enjoyed the Spareribs and Preserved Chinese Sausage the most. One of the most important tests of a good clay pot is the crispy rice at the bottom on the pot. For this I would say it's above average. The most disappointing dish was the Taisan Duck which consists of a soy based braised duck with taro in a clay pot. A lot of duck bones and not enough duck meat. You also get a complimentary bowl of soup since it does take a little while for the clay pot to come out

tldr hole in the wall neighborhood spot specialized in serving clay pot rice dishes with friendly staff each pot comes with a good serving of chinese melon soup and enough to feed two people! the soup itself was really warming and had good flavor of chicken we ordered the chicken with dried mushroom cla pot rice that came out really hot and fresh. the chicken was really tender and flavorful with mushroom flavor as dried mushroom typically have that. they use basic lee kum kee soy sauce and i wish they would create a sweeter/ richer type of soy sauce typically given for this dish! the dish also had the perfect crispy rice texture on the bottom of the pot which was perfectly not burnt (a signature good sign of this dish) the plates were a bit dirty and restaurant itself is pretty old but services was friendly and fast. they give complementary tea too. overall i would come back again if i had a big craving for this dish! it was really affordable too. food 3.75/5 service 4/5 ambiance 2/5 value 4/5

My favourite spot to get clay pot rice in the city. The signature preserved meat clay pot is what I like to get. Get a nice crispy layer of rice at the bottom and love to top it off with the jalapeño sweet soy they have at the table. Food comes out surprisingly quick for the rice which is a bonus

This is the type of restaurant that you would bring your older Chinese relatives too. Flavors and food items they serve are more catered to Chinese tastebuds rather than western tastebuds. After you order, they give you a warm cup of soup of the day. Claypot rice: we got their signature taishan eel claypot which is like a smaller version of unagi. The rice is a little oily from the eel and Chinese sausages so not for people on a diet. The key to eating claypot rice is to not disturb the bottom of the rice until towards the end. That way you will end up with a crispy slightly burnt rice layer. Wonton soup: the soup has a very clean flavor and the wonton is quite delicious. A very comfortable eat. Herbal jelly (turtle jelly) : texture is like a firm jello but there is a slight bitterness to it from the Chinese herbs. The jelly is soaked in a sweet water and overall sweetness is not overpowering. Red bean ice: milky and sweet with red beans

Taishan restaurants have had a resurgence in San Francisco the past few years, with the Taishan yellow eel claypot being a big feature. The Claypot House is, like most restaurants in the area, homey and modest, with a solid crowd, and service that could be from your grandfather or elderly uncle. Food is a mixed bag. Snow pea fritters were super weird, ended up being edamame that was seasoned and pan fried? The lettuce was iceberg, seasoned and sauteed, straight up OG Taishan-style. The house special pork belly clay pot and preserved vegetable resulted in a very soft pork belly and a very strong, salty preserved vegetable-- get this with a side of white rice if you want it to be edible as it doesn't come with rice. The actual clay pot rice's themselves were better, the ground pork and salted fish was not a very salty fish but again straight up from a Taishan kitchen. The eel/chicken/lopcheng was very good, with the eel that's popular (beware of bones), but the real star of the show was the pai gut (pork spareribs with black bean sauce) claypot rice, which was excellent. It's not a bad place but it felt like their competitors mean you have to be on you A-game all the time.

I came here with my friends on a late weekend afternoon. There were only two other tables filled, but I've found the place more busy in the past during a weekend dinnertime. We were seated in the corner where there was ample space for us and our belongings. They served us hot tea while we waited. I ordered the Preserved Chinese Sausage, Pork, Duck, and Fish Clay Pot Rice. All our orders came out quite fresh. While I enjoyed the crunchy rice at the bottom of my bowl along with the flavorful Chinese sausage, the pork and fish were too salty for my taste. My friend who had ordered the same dish also found the dish to be too salty that day. I've enjoyed trying other dishes from this restaurant in the past, but I wouldn't get this specific dish again.

Every thing was as good as the last. They have a pretty extensive menu I wanted to try it all. Sadly I had to settle for Hot and Sour Soup, Wonton soup, Pork Xiao Long Bao 8 Pcs, Chicken Xiao Long Bao 8 Pcs, (8Pcs) Pork Dumpling with Sesame Sauce and Red Chili Oil (6Pcs), Numb & spicy pork Bao, Green Onion Pancake, (Sweet) Red Bean Paste Pockets. We had it family style. The 3 of us shared it all. There was plenty to go around. None of us left hungry. I can't even pick a favorite. Maybe the numb and spicy which wasn't that spicy. It was just so good and flavorful. The soup dumplings were amazing. So much perfect flavor. They held together until the bite. So good. The hot and sour soup was plenty tasty. Not the best I've ever had but certainly among the best. The only thing I will say is that one of my companions can't have seaweed. The wonton soup was amazing but full of seaweed. It wasn't listed on the menu and we have never had seaweed in any other wonton soup so didn't know to ask if it could be left out. That was sad. All she could do was have a tiny spoon of the broth to taste it. The green onion pancake was very good. The red bean paste pockets use the same dough but filled with sweet red bean paste. They were a perfect way to end the meal. Next time I'm in the city I will visit again. Loved it all. It was worth taking the time to visit and eat there.

Dumpling Home will always be my favorite (still prefer it a TINY bit), but because there is less of a crowd, service was amazing! I definitely wouldn't mind coming back considering there the difference in wait time to Dumpling Home.

The restaurant can be a little hidden, but it's pretty easy to find with the instructions they send before your reservation. It's located above Fermentation Lab. Just head up the stairs and you'll find it inside the old Ichi Pub space. The restaurant is small and intimate, with only 9 seats at the counter. When you arrive, walk through the Yuji curtain and check in directly with the chef since there is no host. My biggest concern with set menus is always whether I'll feel satisfied and full afterward, but that was definitely not an issue here. My husband and I were both very satisfied after the meal. Every dish was delicious, and you could really taste the quality of each ingredient. Highlights for me were the bluefin sashimi, which was so buttery and soft that it literally melted in your mouth. The skillfish was rich and decadent, and the citrus and ginger balanced the flavors. The fried fish was another favorite as it reminded me of the savory Japanese rice crackers I loved growing up. Since it's located in Japantown, parking can be challenging. We had to loop around several times looking for street parking and even had two cars take spots we were waiting for, so definitely give yourself extra time before your reservation. I would highly recommend this place! The chef changes the menu periodically based on what's in season, so it's a great excuse to come back and try something new in the future. I ordered the Lion's Mane Mushroom. *A lovely note for the vegans and lactose-intolerant: there is a dairy-free option for the Thai iced tea (made with coconut milk). Given that this was a Michelin guide restaurant, we had certain expectations of the place and sadly we were disappointed. While the service was friendly and the server knowledgeable on the menu, the service itself was severely lacking in detail you'd expect from a $$$$ type of place. Our drinks came out first, followed by the appetizer, then came EVERYTHING ELSE all at once. Papaya Salad Daikon Soup Trio of rice (purple, brown, white) Curry + protein (duck for my friend, lion's mane mushroom for me) We tried to tackle the soup first. It came in an artsy looking bowl with undulated/rouged edges that was awkward to drink from but equally awkward to spoon the soup from. The daikon was VERY WOODY. Both my friend and I awkwardly spit out splintery fibers and left them on our plate. Some of my daikon chunks were fine but my poor friend had double the amount of woody mass collecting on her plate which was really unsightly, especially when you're supposed to be at a nice place. I can't say I've ever encountered this with daikon before at a restaurant. It's pretty easy to see which parts of the daikon are too mature to use. Next we tried to get on to our entree as that was cooling quickly. Unfortunately the curries were already somewhat congealed by the time we made our way to it. The vegan one was pretty good, but again, I had some woody bits in my food. I don't know if that's from the mushroom or if it was from another ingredient but the splintery clumps amassing on the side of our plates was not what we had imagined we'd be doing at a Michelin guide restaurant.... My friend's duck wasn't much better. She complained about the awkward texture and wound up spitting out half of that one her plate. -not to mention, her meal was served to her without a steak knife. After waiting for much too long, she got up to go request a knife and walked the knife back to the table like a psycho. I'm not trying to sound entitled here, but when a restaurant is supposed to be "nice" and has "$$$$", you sort of expect a certain caliber of service. Having to go ask for a knife when you ordered a chunk of meat does seem like a miss. For what it's worth, the curries for both of us had a unique blend of flavors. My friend had a penang currty sweetened with lychee. I don't remember what kind of curry mine was, but it was tasty with a kick in the end. Curry to rice ratio was perhaps 1:3. We had to ask for extra curry to accompany the protein and rice to balance everything out. It would have just been so pasty and dry otherwise (you know, since everything was already congealed...) By the time we got around to our papaya salad, it had gone from chilled to room temp. While it was tasty, it wasn't as refreshing as the salad could be. We're not sure why all courses were served at once, or if that's how this specific lunch service goes? The best course of the day was 100% the dessert. Order the vegan dessert! "Mango-sticky rice ice cream". It was a homemade mango ice cream with coconut milk base. It sounds basic but these ingredients were masterfully put together to create something truly unique. Not sure where the rice was in this whole situation, but who cares! This dessert was incredible! Lightly sweet, creamy and freshing. It arrived like a piece of art, like a glossy, glimmering mango sculture. The way that chilled mango puree spilled over, coating the ice cream underneath... It clung on to the ice cream layer just barely coating it for most perfect combination of sweet and creamy. It was unfortunate I got the last one for the day. My friend had the cheesecake which she said was tasty but not mindblowing like my mango ice cream. It also was... not so glorious. In fact, it looked small and flat, like a half used stack of mini post-it notes. All in all, it was a fun experience. The dishes were familiar favorites with a creative twist. For $45, it wasn't bad but I don't know about coming back for the $$$$ dinner experience based on this visit. Maybe we'll be back for the $40-$45 prefixe again in the future.
