I came here yesterday, December 2, with family to celebrate my Mom's 90th birthday. This is the second time that I dine at this gem nestled in the corner of eighth and Montrose in the small, but cute area called downtown Clermont. Our server, Kathleena, served the seven of us without a hitch. She was excellent, attentive, and personable. She always checked in on us, even though the place started to get crowded. My mom and I ordered, the white sangria. It is not made in a pictcher, but by the glass. The taste depends on who makes it and I liked it better the second time around when the bartenders switched. I also ordered the smoky apple cider margarita and it was a hit. For appetizers, I ordered The Nash Duck, which was five fried duck legs. It was delicious! It was served with biscuits and pickled cucumbers. My sister ordered cheddar biscuits and southern corn muffins, and the other sister ordered the beet salad. I didn't taste what they ordered, but they liked what they had. My dinner order, as well as my mom's, was the chefs catch of the day - red snapper over mushroom risotto with brussel sprouts. It was very very good! My mom, who is difficult to please, enjoyed her meal. One sister ordered the roasted veggie risotto, and the other one ordered the same but added shrimp. They both enjoyed their meal. My brother ordered the Romain Caesar with chicken and he liked his order and my daughter ordered the southern chicken sandwich with fries. Her boyfriend ordered the country fried New York strip. They said everything was very good. If you find yourself visiting the hills of Clermont, FL, be sure to stop in and visit. I really wanted to like this place. We arrived on a Sunday, early so we were sat immediately. The server seemed rushed as he slid past our table slightly with a carafe of water, stopped suddenly and began pouring water into the glasses preset at our table. Nice decor. Reminds you of a farmhouse. We had the house special Bloody Mary and a watermelon vodka something. The Bloody Mary was fantastic! Only change recommended was offer olives unstuffed without the ever present pimiento cheese. The smash burger came out over-seasoned and on a burnt bun with a single strip of bacon laid across the top of the patties. I found it odd that the cooks don't break it in half, lay it across the top and serve it that way. My guest did this work...why? Fries were served in a mini colander with ketchup. Benny had plain fried diced potatoes, no seasoning, no onions or peppers or love. The shaved ham was Smokey and very good. The eggs were poached slightly under, enough to turn my stomach at the runny egg white sliding down the dry English muffin. We loved our brunch here. We made reservations which was a good thing. The entrance was full of hungry folk waiting for a table. It was also a Sunday when the Clermont Farmer's Market is in full swing. Parking is a challenge since the streets are closed. We loved the food--classic eggs Benedict and the hot chicken and waffles. It was so delicious! Mimosas available in many flavors--I chose the classic OJ and Prosecco. We sat on the back porch with live music being played on the patio. Loved our experience here the other night for a girls date. Located in the heart of downtown Clermont, this cozy restaurant offers a variety of options for appetizers and entrees. The staff are friendly and check on you often. Then their food... delicious! I do not get to see often She Crab Soup so I had to get it. I wish I got the bowl size instead of a cup. So thick and creamy and full of flavor. I loved my shrimp and grits as well. This is the second time coming here and OMG! From the food to the atmosphere it's amazing! This place is hidden in downtown Clermont. When you first walk in it's super cozy and cute! I have only come here for brunch both times and they don't disappoint. We started off with Green Fried Tomatoes which is my favorite and they made it perfectly! Never a disappointment here. Located in downtown Winter Garden. There's always been plenty of street parking somewhere nearby. I've tried and loved the grouper sandwich, seafood pasta, fried green tomatoes, deviled eggs, and shrimp and grits. The adult beverages are good and strong as well. Good date night atmosphere. We like sitting in the outdoor, covered "courtyard". You can make reservations right from their website. Servers have always been pleasant and knowledgeable of menu items. We stopped to grab some happy hour food on a Friday night, and the staff and kitchen seemed to be having a hard time getting it together. Took a while to get greeted, which was fine - got our menus and debated what we wanted as we waited for the bartender to come around again. After ordering, we chilled out, talked, and were discussing the ollllddddd episode of Friends that was playing on the TV. Guess our bartender isn't a fan since he decided to call us out for even watching it and saying he hated the show because it's boring - cool man, no one asked. He also went in to say that when he came in for his shift, it was playing on two tvs, and he HAD to change one. dang, I'm not a fan of the show, but my hate doesn't run that deep. Sorry, we didn't want to get in on the sporting event going on on the second TV. ANYWAY, since we were made to feel stupid about talking about the TV, we decided to watch as every server coming out of the kitchen auctioned off food around the bar. Bringing out two or three items at a time, dropping off one or two and bringing whatever was leftover and Unclaimed back to the kitchen before it came back out with the next person to try and get auctioned off again. After waiting a bit longer than normal, our fried bologna and truffle fries arrived. The fried bologna was...well more like a lightly toasted bologna sandwich. Nothing like the toasty, melty goodness they usually serve up. The fries, considering how busy the bar was, were cold. I'm not talking luke warm, I'm talking like tepid, room temp, soggy starch sticks. The bartender who was keen on spotting what everyone was watching on TV was now completely oblivious to us not really enjoying the food, so we just closed our tab and left. This has nothing to do with Southern on the 8th but if there's one thing I must warn first time Downtown Clermont visitors, don't go the first Friday of the month!! It's their Food Truck evening and parking is a nightmare! Uber is your best bet. Lesson learned. On to the restaurant. We made reservations and we were immediately seated. Our server was friendly and attentive. She mentioned the special for the evening which I went with. I had the fish (sorry, can't recall what kind of fish) and paired it with Sauvignon Blanc. The meal was delicious. The fish had a nice hollandaise sauce that went well with the carrots and the asparagus. We sat inside but for those wanting to experience live music, outdoor seating is the way to go. If I was only rating this place for their services, I would give it a 5 star rating. However, the food was a huge disappointment!! The Ceasar Salad, was just Romain lettuce cut in half and dressing on top with shaved parmesan cheese, nothing special for it to be $16. The huge letdown was the Country Fried NY Strip! The gravy was more like heavy glue and can tell it's not fresh. The NY Strip itself tasted old with no flavors. That wasn't worth $27! The mashed potatoes underneath it were definitely old and tasted like one of those store bought ones. I've had Country Fried Steaks and this was far from it. Kids cheese burger cold and WAY overcooked burger. The fries, not only was it cold but soggy lacking salt. Their Buffalo Cauliflower was soaked in oil and not edible enough to eat unless you want to get a heart attack. Our waitress was concerned we didn't eat our food and asked if there was anything wrong with the flavors. We opted not to return the food since we didn't think anything could've changed. The waitress did ask if we wanted to take it to go but said no. The owner of this place should check their food quality because it apparently missing. Sadly, we will not return. read more

The restaurant is super cute with farm related decor, touches of green, and shiplap. Seating is plentiful and the bar was big and lively. We came for Sunday brunch a really enjoyed it. Tracy was our server and kept the mimosas flowing to our lively party if 5. The devils eggs were tasty and so was the fish dip. Fish dip is served warm with a sweet and hot pepper jelly that was yummy. The plate of biscuits and gravy was large and savory. The biscuits fluffy underneath all the creamy and lush gravy. Read reviews about this place, and wanted to be optimistic that it would be better. Unfortunately, the mixed reviews paint the picture correctly. The food is okay but nothing worth waiting for. Let's start with apps. We had 7 people in our party and tried the Gorgonzola short rib, gator tail, and biscuits/corn muffins basket. The Gorgonzola is extremely overpowering and the short rib lacks flavor with a pot roast like texture. The toasted bread it's served on also tastes very stale rather than toasted. The gator tail is served nicely but unfortunately is not seasoned well and is slathered on a bed of gravy/sauce that ruins the crispiness' of the breading. The corn muffins were extremely dry and the spread options it's served with can't save it. Pimento cheese spread is very good but butter/marmalade shouldn't have to be caked on to make it good. For dinner we tried the chicken sandwich, bacon smash burger, and the herb crusted chicken. All dishes lacked flavor/seasoning and continued to disappoint. The "Nashville Hot" chicken sandwich was overcooked and had no spicy aspect to it at all. The fries were also limp and had been sitting for some time. The burger was average and luckily we didn't receive burnt buns based on other reviews. The chicken was bland and could've used more of an herb crust as the description states. Hopefully this review is helpful but unfortunately the kitchen either needs help or the menu will need a revamp of what they can execute well. This place is ok. I was excited to try it because they boast a scratch made kitchen, but flavor is definitely lacking. We decided to order just apps to begin with, and would order more if the apps tasted good, We normally don't do this, so I don't know why we decided to do this the other day. Great weekend brunch! After 2 visits for brunch I decided to write this review. My first visit was ok. The food was great, but the server wasn't the friendliest. I was with a large party, but we had a reservation so the lack of preparedness was not our fault. Kiddos to the kitchen staff for preparing great dishes. My second visit was much better. Went for Sunday brunch and was generally pleased. We had a reservation, and our table was ready for us when we arrived, so were promptly seated. Our server was very attentive and our drink and food orders arrived very soon after placing them. Overall, the food is tasty with good presentation. I ordered the Country Ham Benedict (minus the ham); very tasty. My only complaint was that the eggs were on the cool side. The garlic home fries were great (most "garlic" fries never seem to have enough garlic for me - while not overpowering, the Southern's will definitely help keep vampires away!). The key lime pie was A-maz-ing!! One of the best I've ever had. The owners are wonderful! This place has a great atmosphere, is decorated beautifully and has great beer, wine and cocktail offerings. Great local spot. In my first visit to Southern on 8th, we had an excellent time. Restaurant a/c wasn't that comfortable and music (and type) was loud for a restaurant it they turned it down when we asked. The restaurant was much larger than bar - but bar music permeated everywhere. Detracted from experience. Alligator was tender and tasty. Biscuits were strong. Steak crostini's - excellent. Poutine - fantastic. Catfish was a little bland. Fries were good. Grilled Cajun chicken sandwich wasn't spicy at all. There was more slaw than chicken. The chicken breast was so small and thin. I honestly think it was a mistake. You literally can get more chicken at Wendy's, Chick-Fil-A, or even McDonalds in their $4 sandwich. This was a disappointment. Be wary of "white Alabama sauce" on certain menu items. It is a garlic, mayonnaise, cream sauce that we all thought was odd at best. Great craft cocktails and beer selection. They don't open until four so I was anticipating going as soon as they open. I was visiting my son and I love trying places that I've never been. My son lives in Clermont. I went to happy hour. I got the french fries and the bologna sandwich with no mayonnaise; that was good. Fries were amazing even the next day when warmed up in the air fryer ( I love fries especially homemade and not frozen) and then I got the country fried New York strip with mashed potatoes. The only thing is I truly don't know what the three vegetables on my plate were the one look like a carrot I don't know what the other two were but I didn't eat those, all in all, the food was good. We have had Southern on 8th recommended a number of times. Somehow it still wasn't what we expected. We expected a typical bar & grill. It's definitely a bar/restaurant, but with a more upscale feel and menu. The decor is classic in it's whitewashed brick look, but the employees are dressed more formally, the tables and decorations give a classy feel. The bar area is definitely up-market. The menu has a burger and a chicken sandwich, fried chicken, saleads and steak. There are also seafood options, and everythi g is prepared more like formal dining than bar-fare. We found the food to be very good. Is it up to the level of the pricing? Probably. Again, it wasn't what we were expecting, so our mental pallates weren't really prepared. Overall, we had a good meal. More importantly, we had a very nice relaxing experience, and that's just what we needed. It was an enjoyable experience. Last night Tommy and I dined at Southern on 8th for the first time. We took 7 other family and friends with us. Kim, our server, was awesome. We were seated near the front of the house, but from walking by the restaurant I know they have a large outdoor area. We had attended Pig on the Pond, an annual festival that Clermont hosts to raise funds for the community schools. The crowds for the festival were very large, and the weather was great. The restaurant was not that busy. I seem to notice that when a restaurant is not real busy with customers, the food usually is slow coming out of the kitchen. Wonder why that is? Happily we all were having a great time socializing. I have to give them an A on the taste of the food. I'm vegan, and they were able to create a pasta dish for me. Everyone else enjoyed their meals. Kim gets an A+ for her wonderful service through the two hours we were there. Terry, the GM, was very visible throughout the evening, helping the serving staff and chatting with customers. Would just suggest maybe a little more help in the kitchen if that was the issue on the wait time for food. We'll definitely go back and try them again. read more

After exploring Historic Downtown Clermont one afternoon for the first time, we decided to return to try The Southern on 8th one evening with friends. Thankfully, we were able to book a reservation online because it was quite busy upon our arrival. We didn't have to wait too long for our table, though. The atmosphere inside is so nice. It's very rustic and well decorated. It also has several dining rooms, which create such an intimate ambiance. Our server was also fantastic -- very warm, friendly, informative, and attentive. We ordered for the table the Spring Onion & Cheddar Biscuits and Southern Corn Muffins as an appetizer. It came with three spreads -- pimento cheese, house preserves, and maple honey butter. The cheese was obviously the best. For my entree, I ordered the Seasonal Farmers Pasta because I love pappardelle pasta. Unfortunately, it was a little lacking in flavor and substance, so that's why I'm giving the restaurant four stars instead of five. More sauce and veggies were definitely needed. Next time, I'd try something different. All in all, we had a great experience. My boyfriend and I took our sport bike out for a day around the streets of Clermont. This is not an area that I frequent, so I was looking for a fun place with an outdoor patio, good drinks, and inexpensive food. Well this place was it. Fernando was our bartender and he was not only extremely friendly and accommodating, but made really great margaritas! The happy hour menu on the weekend was a surprise...and a bonus. We can in for a dinner with some friends. We started with the deviled eggs, burrata caprese, and steak tips crostini. The deviled eggs were really good and the toppings gave some extra texture. The burrata was really good and the crostini was perfectly crisp to hold the cheese and tomatoes. My favorite was the steak tips. They had a lot of flavor and the horseradish creme did not overwhelm the steak that was cooked perfectly. For dinner one of the kids had the burrata for her meal and the other did the seasonal farmers pasta. Both of them really enjoyed their meals and ate almost everything on the plate. For my meal I opted for the herb crusted garden chicken. I asked for the tapenade on the side, but it did not come out on the side. The chicken was so flavorful and juicy I didn't even ask for it afterwards. The only issue we had for the full meal was we tried the beignets for dessert. The first batch that was brought out was undercooked. The second batch was cooked, but it was too dense for our preference and we didn't enjoy them as much as we hoped. First visit and in no mindset to ever revisit... Let's get the easiest done first. The service. 100% on-point. The ambiance was fantastic too - subtle and mellow yet inviting. The food was just horrid. Ordered the Truffle Parmesan fries as an appetizer (8.$) and they were room temp and limp. Heavy on the fresh grated parm and the truffle got lost in it all somewhere. The Fla warm smoked fish crab dip (15$) was served in a very flat ramiken with stale crustini's with evo heavily brushed on top. They were not toasted and were just stale and excessively chewy. I found only one piece of a fish sliver and zero crab. The small blop of pepper jelly was too sweet and no heat. The cream and pimento cheese was Heavy with the creme fraiche The Smashed Angus Dbl. Bacon Cheeseburger (17$) 2 small limp and cold pieces of candied bacon (don't like cold limp bacon) and the Pimento Cheese placed in a dollop atop the burger was the most unflavorful experience of Pimento Cheese I have ever tasted. The lettuce and one uneven cut tomato slice along with 2 thin slices of red onion were "ok" and the 2 house pickles were good. The handcut fries were luke warm and limp which was weird considering that over half looked overcooked. The beef patties were done right - go figure. The Bison Short Rib Bolognese (32$) For the price this dish should've come with some type of accompaniment. It was served on a standard sized (at home) dinner plate fitting at best 3'' from the edge of the plate. The potato gnocchi was done correct yet room temp and the red wine/ tomato RAGOUT was just awful unless you enjoy a surly taste of red wine flavoring it all. The insult of this sauce was just the worst of flavor and consistency. And the entire meal name is a contradiction (Bolognese, for example, falls under the ragù umbrella. Ragout, on the other hand, is a slow-cooked French-style stew) I've no clue where brown butter even came into it all and the fried sage was a joke as it was missing completely. The pecorino & parmesan cheese that one expected to atop of it was Missing as well. The Bison... just unbelievable as there wasn't enough to constitute a large tablespoon of meat. 3 pieces of the meat were unedible as extra chewing was involved and it was just tough. It was like pot roast meat with Zero FLAVOR. The restaurant this Thursday evening and we got there around 5 was Not Busy in any way shape or form. So how is it that the kitchen could just serve such crap food with absolute consistency? It's a mystery but not really. It comes down to poor training and a chef that most likely needs to return to culinary school as my 12 year old grandaughter could run a food line and cook far better than whoever they have got back there now and she can barely cook a pot of ramen correctly. read more

We had the steak tidbits for an appetizer, this one a the second time I have had this dish and it did not disappoint! Our party of 6 visited The Sourthern in January 2024. It was an awful experience. Almost nothing was right and the service was extremely slow. It wasn't a busy day; and yet we were there for almost 2 hours. The Deviled Eggs and Smoked Fish Dip appetizers were very good (but slow coming out... a bad sign as it turned out). Only one of the 6 entrees was good: the Shrimp & Grits. From there it was all downhill. I'll save the worst for last: My Double Smashburger came without the requested mustard and jalapenos, and the tomato was mushy, as if it had been cut a few days ago. The French fries were cold and soggy. I sent them back and much later, after I had eaten the burger, the second order of fries finally showed up. This time they were hot but still soggy. Cooking oil must've been too cold. Two people ordered the waffles & chicken. Cold waffles. Ugh. The pecan encrusted chicken & salad had no pecan crust. They apparently took it on themselves to substitute regular fried chicken. And worst of all was the French Toast. The cook had totally burned one side of the toast. I mean it was solid black at least 1/8" deep. So rather than fix it, they knowingly put it black side down and served it anyway!!! No chef worth his pay would do such a trick, especially not in a reputable restaurant. To me, it calls into question the integrity of the whole operation. I mean, if they'll do that to something the customer sees, what kind of care do they take with things we DON'T see? Like cleanliness for example. And sure enough, I just checked (See Yelp/Info): At their 12/14/23 inspection, they had THIRTY-ONE VIOLATIONS, which amounts to a FAILING GRADE in that it required a follow-up inspection. [For the record, they "met" inspection standards at their prior 5 check-ups. Something is badly wrong with this place. I certainly will never go back, and recommend that you don't either, at least until they get their act together. And there's obviously a lot of work to do. read more

This place is located in Claremont downtown, just off the lake. One can take a stroll around the lake and end up here for some well deserved rest. They specialize in Southern food. Great hospitality and friendly staff. We originally wanted to sit outside after a walk around/near the lake but as we sat down, it got windy and cold so we asked if we could sit inside and they accommodated us right away. We ordered a couple of dishes to share between us since all of us wanted to try a bit of everything. Here is what we ordered: Poutine: Nothing special, it was good as a poutine should be. Fancy Country Fried Steak: I say it this way because I thought the dish was a regular rib-eye steak but when it came deep fried in batter with gravy then I realized what it actually was. It was actually pretty good for those who like country fried steak. Pork Chop Bone-In: it was not dry as most often happens when you order any type of pork. The sauce was just ok (not to our liking), so that made the dish just decent. The restaurant itself is good, just that we are not used to this type of flavor or has some other expectations due to what we are use to eating. This place is worth coming to make up your own mind regarding if you like their food or not. They have an extensive drink menu so that might change things around. They also have New Orleans food on Fat Tuesday and Brunch, which we haven't had. Just their regular weekend dinner. read more

Very nice ambiance decoration was super fun and colorful. I ordered the shrimp and grits it was very good - however the shrimp was unimpressive a miss I would have appreciated better bigger quality shrimp and perhaps stir fried or sautéed separately - The corn bread was not it - it wasn't hot or warm I did go on mothers day so maybe they were busy but that shouldn't be an excuse ......... it's giving Caucasian southern cooking Anywho I would definitely go again just order with notes read more

Surprised a friend and 6 of us had a delightful brunch at Southern on 8th! We sat outside and there was a guitar player! Wonderful atmosphere and delicious food! We arrived at 11 and the outdoor porch and tables on the lawn completely filled up! We all had peach French toast, pecan chicken salad, avocado toast and Bloody Mary's ! Served beautifully, fast. All our food amazing!! Our waitress was great too! My husband and I have been for dinner 4 times recently! Soooo glad always spot on and congratulations for your success! Our night was super. We'd heard good and bad about this place. We finally decided to try it out ourselves. We liked it. A little pricey but the staff, food and decor/ambiance is great. I had the Southern fried chicken and my wife had the salmon. Both good. Good beer and wine selection, nice bar area, clean and well managed. We'll be back again. read more

Burger cooked to death on a burnt bun. Shrimp in the grits was overcooked as well and was salty. The chorizo was overheated and dry. Only 3 charred tomatoes? 3? Sad. I have tried to like this place but disappointed too many times. read more

First time in Clermont and came across this gem. The Southern on 8th Kitchen and Bar is a scratch kitchen and has a full bar. I have no complaints. Our server Fernando was very pleasant and knew the menu perfectly. He made great suggestions and was on the money. We had a Southern Revival cocktail, deviled eggs, shrimp and grits, and the southern fried chicken sandwich. The flavors were amazing and the portions were just enough.
