This place was an extremely cool find! My husband and I stumbled the promise place after our anniversary dinner and even though it wasn't really easy to get to it was super neat. Kind of a speakeasy vibe as soon as you walk in there and then turn right and there's a bar. We got some drinks and then walked into this hallway where they had tables and lounge-y chairs. Sadly, these areas were reserved and spoken for, until one of their kind and attentive employees cleared one of the areas for us.. maybe because the reservation was not until later? Last October I made reservations for one of the bowling lanes to celebrate a friends belated birthday, and the process was simple and fast. I will say this is one of the coolest old money style bar & bowling alley's I've had the pleasure of attending. It was right up my alley ;) They also have board games. We went here when exploring the Hollywood area on a whim and looking for a comfortable lounge bar to end our evening with. Came across this one when searching for recommended lounges, and after passing 2 that weren't the evening vibes we were hoping for, we were very happy to take a chance on this one. The Spare Room is on the mezzanine floor of the Roosevelt hotel, but doesn't require you to be a guest or have reservations (at least we didn't need to when we came on a Monday evening in January). Walking into the lounge, there's a bar followed by a series of couches on the left, great for a date night or drinks after work with friends. Next to the couches are pool tables, they aren't too full when we came in but I wouldn't be surprised if they are popular on busier nights. The bartender was wonderful, easy to have conversations with and she was very accommodating when I asked if she could use less syrup and more coffee in the espresso martini, which was one of the best I've had in a while. Definitely overall has an atmosphere of authentic vibes, welcoming staff, and options to chill, chat, or play some games with friends old or new. We recently hosted a birthday party at The Spare Room, and it couldn't have gone better. Karen made the entire planning process so easy. She was incredibly responsive, helpful, and worked with us every step of the way to make sure everything came together perfectly. During the event, Parker took care of our bowling lanes, kept score, and even gave everyone tips throughout the night. He was fantastic and made the experience even more fun. The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else. The music, the décor, and the overall vibe made for such a memorable night. The sliders were also a huge hit with our group. The most beautiful bowling alley I've ever seen I came here for a private party this weekend. I've been to the hotel for other events a handful of times, but have never gone to The Spare Room until now. I'm really not a huge bowling person, but had such a wonderful time here. The aesthetics really make the experience. Everything from the decor to the drink selections feel paused in time. The balls are sleek and simple, with only two lanes that look like they could come out of a Wes Anderson movie. My only wish was that the view wasn't obstructed by covering the massive windows with film. I really enjoyed bowling, and found that I wasn't bad at it! The handsome bowling attendant also gave us all tips and tricks. He was great - knowledgeable and charming, and he kept score the whole time too! I kept drinking the Drag Queen's Gambits all night. I loved the thought of putting sesame oil in a gin cocktail, and it was absolutely delicious. I'll be trying to replicate them at home for my husband and I sometime soon. I had a lemon drop as well that I really enjoyed as a nightcap. Since it's such an intimate venue, I expect that having the whole place to yourself is a better experience than just booking one lane on a random night. We went to the spare room to celebrate two birthdays. We were able to reserve the tables for 4 hours next to the bowling alley. Service is great! They really attended to our needs. So it took me ten years to get back to the Spare Room, as it turned out, but I liked it just as much the second time around. I went for a work party for maybe 40 to 50 people, with buffet-style food and an open bar. It was an ideal venue for that kind of event, with plenty of places to sit and chat, in addition to those pretty bowling lanes. The food was good, though I don't remember what it all was, and I thoroughly enjoyed the cocktails. The Thunderclap was probably my favorite, with blanco tequila, Douglas fir, ginger, honey, fizz, aquafaba, lemon, and mezcal mist. I also liked Green For Danger, with mezcal, dry vermouth, Lustau manzanilla sherry, cucumber lime cordial, and absinthe. The Day For Night was a nice gin drink with St. George Botanivore, Campari, sweet vermouth, lemon, and egg white. On the whiskey side, I enjoyed the Goldenback, made with Woodford Reserve bourbon, Lustau amontillado sherry, peach, and salted honey. Horrible money suckers - had a broken window on my car and was there for one hour on a Monday at 11 pm. I waited for the parking attendant for more than 15 minutes and when I returned to my car, I saw that they had blocked it with a large SUV and were telling me that I need to pay a ridiculous amount of $20. Mind you I had left two notes on my car with my phone number for them to reach me and let me know what the cost of this parking would be and if it is OK that I actually self parked and nobody did. This is a great place for drinks and some appetizers. I love meeting friends here. We made a reservation for our birthday and it was really easy to make the reservation and to modify it. But I would book early because ideal time slots are taken quickly. We ended up not doing the alley and just the lounge area. They were attentive with drinks, they had a good supply of board games (although we opted to play the ones we brought ourselves). The ambience is fantastic. The Spare Room inside of the Roosevelt Hotel is located on the mezzanine. We went on a unique night when some B-list celebrities were patting themselves on the back for a unheard of streaming premier on Hulu at best. The comedy was, if you went anywhere near the ledge, one of the guards would stop you and ask you were you were going, even though it's clear you are just trying to find the bar. The bar by the way isn't really well marked so good luck finding it. You also need to be wearing shoes (no flip flops). The place inside really isn't that fancy but they want to act that way. Ok, you've managed to make it inside despite all obstacles. We were there pretty early so we got seats at the bar. The bartender was a lot of fun. The issue lies where I emailed the reservation system 8 days in advance about reserving a bowling lane - they took 5 days to get back to me, and gave me 2 time slots to pick from. I immediately responded and booked the 10pm slot. Upon arriving, I find my reservation was lost, and there would be no way to bowl that evening (a bit disappointing, considering we had bought a round of drinks and paid for valet already). This is an upscale bar located in the Hollywood Roosevelt upstairs. After our Dinner at The Barish, we stayed out and went here. Its in Hollywood at a famous hotel so prices were as expected. It has a great, fun vibe. I was there on a weekend night and it had a good amout of people there, but not overly crowded where we couldnt get a couch. Drinks seemed to be likable from everyone in my group. We were celebrating a bachelorette and was a good spot for that. We didn't have any reservations and were able to get one of those booths immediately when we went around 10pm. Crowd seemed to be mostly 20-30s, with a group of men that were in their 50/60s, which we later found out from the waitress that it was the owner and his friends. Music was great all night, with classics that all ages would love. The bowling side was going all night and looked fun. For some reason the aesthetics gave an old Hollywood / cigar lounge vibe, which was very cool. If you go to the end of the couch area there is a mini history gallery of the hotel/hollywood. No cover when we were there, I don't think they do that? Doorman/bouncer was very nice. Only reccommendation would be for waitresses to clean tables and check the couches more often. Our table we were at had a lot of empty drinks not picked up. Also noticed tables that were empty for awhile also had tons of empty glasses. One of our friends in our group went to sit down on the couch next to our seats and accidently sat on vomit. Apparently there was a couple sitting there earlier that I remember and we believe she threw up on the seat. Cannot comment on parking as we took uber. I probably wouldn't make this my go-to bar if you live further out as parking seems sparse and expensive, but I would definitely go again for once-in-awhile outings or for celebrations. read more

This was by far the worst experience I've ever had at hotel bar, do not go here. I booked a couch on Saturday night to celebrate my birthday with friends. When booking the reservation, I was told my party would need to leave at 11pm to make room for another private event. I was appreciative of the heads up, and had a fine start to the evening. While it would have been more convenient for our party to order drinks individually at the bar, the server asked us to order from her directly, as we were technically in her section, and of course we agreed, and I understood. The bar doesn't have it's own bathroom, so you need to leave the bar and walk through the hotel to find one. At exactly 10:30pm, I left the bar to use the bathroom, and ran into a childhood friend who drove over an hour to come celebrate my birthday, and was just arriving. The woman at the door told us I could go back into the bar, but not my friend, as 10:30 was last call. We remained clam and polite, and explained the situation, that he was with our party, and even if the bar was closing, he'd just like to come in, to say hello to friends and meet our partners. He wouldn't even order a drink and that was okay with us. This was at 10:32pm. The door person told us she was going to have to say "a hard no." When we asked to chat with the manager, she also showed NO sympathy, as if she were a robot, with no ability to make a human or logical call. The entire staff remained indifferent, despite the fact that we were kind, polite, and grateful guests all night, who brought a good deal of business in that evening. I closed out my tab which then took over 20 minutes. Knowing they had wronged me, they applied a tip on their own, without asking. For the record, when I'm out celebrating, I almost always leave 30-50% tips, so the 20% they slapped on, was much lesser than they would have received. This bar and RUDE STAFF completely ruined the evening and should be embarrassed about how robotic and sheepish they are in their decision making. I feel sorry for them that they feel the need to be on little power trips and that they treat their guests like this. No one EVER COMMUNICATED anything about a 10:30 doors time when the reservation was set, when we arrived, or as the evening went on. We came to pay $100/hr to bowl. The attendant at the door made my friend leave and put on long pants due to the "dress code." The bowling area is pretty small, just two lanes. The lane next to us had TWELVE people bowling at the same time. The party size was 15. They get very drunk, sat on our seating area, were clad in shorts and tee shirts, and one male touched my friend inappropriately. It was a very uncomfortable 2 hours. Drinks were delivered with a 30 minute turnaround. We spoke with the general manager about our concerns within 20 minutes of arriving. He was abrasive and intense, and said "It's not my problem. It's like this all the time on weekends." On leaving, I reported my friend being touched and he said, "You should have said something when it happened." He ended up subtracting the price of one of the hours bowling. Douglas, our score keeper, was incredible and the best part of the evening. He gave us each individual bowling tips which were spot on! He was kind, courteous, and a warm presence. He did his best to corral the 15 loud, drunken males to their lane. We tipped him well and likely won't return. read more

We asked someone at the front to walkie-talkie if it was OK for us to come up because I am very pregnant and didn't wanna walk up the stairs for no reason. The woman was really kind. She was really understanding. She walkie-talkie the gentleman upstairs. I heard him say it was fine for me to come upstairs my partner and I walked three flights upstairs to get there. I'm obviously out of breath and the gentleman says we can't go in. We let him know that the people that walkie-talkie up he said he doesn't care we can't go in, but what he can do is tell my party to leave. He was extremely condescending. He was very rude and he was absolutely on a power trip, my partner who started getting frustrated obviously as we try to explain that we were told, and we checked before coming up and it was clear. The gentleman at the FRONT became increasingly router and more disrespectful, saying that he's the manager, and he makes the decisions I will never ever return to this place. It's unfortunate because the woman at the front was so courteous so polite and did what she was supposed to do, but this manager person at the door at minimum he could've been polite and politely rejected us. This is a very loud lounge, where conversation is difficult, but no dancing. You must reserve a table or couch in advance, if you are coming with a group, because otherwise, at least on busy nights, you won't find any seating. Cocktails are expensive, but not absurdly so for L.A. (around 15. each). We had non alcoholic sodas which weren't actually unreasonable, at around 7.50 each. Board games are available. There are actually two bowling alleys right in the bar! at $100. per hour to rent. It can be hard to reserve the times exactly, even when in advance. The entire bar itself is dark but the lighting somehow works to illuminate the bowling pins themselves and the lanes. I've been going to the spare room for quite some time now, as they have a different array of cocktails, scotch and such from nearby bars. You can indulge in some pappy van winkle, you can have a signature drink like the 'lucky smoke' that will play with your emotions, or you can just take it easy and have a whiskey sour. There's something for everyone, and better yet, you can play games at the tables, or book a lane in their two lane bowling area. Bowling is $100 per hour for a lane, and the service is great as there is someone running the lanes and chalking up the points. They make the experience fun too as they mingle with you and your party, extra points for me, please!! It's a dark room, with a hidden[ish] photo booth that sometimes does not work, an area with booths which I believe you can reserve for parties, or just hang out and play games if they aren't booked. I was surprised to see that the bowling lanes weren't fully committed when I last went and we were able to get some activities in along with sipping on our $15 cocktails. Yes, $15 may seem like a pretty penny for a cocktail, but you get what you pay for. The drinks are great. Service differs every time i've been. We didn't have a reservation, but the host girl gave us a good table, perfect for the two of us. I liked it they have game board on each table, two bowling lanes. Amazing place to play boardgames with friends while drinking alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks. There is also food but it does not look good from yelp or from what I saw when I went there. The non-alcoholic drink I got was good. it was just tonic water, but it was a special brand served in a really pretty glass bottle and it tasted delicious, sweet, fizzy, and a just a bit tart. The atmosphere is awesome, you feel transported back into the 1920's. There are two bowling alleys that are from that time as well. The BEST part of this bar/board game room is their music selection. OVERALL The Spare Room was a pretty cool cat of a boozy bar and libatious lounge manned by mixology magicians which were either hit or miss in my case. I could've done without the hipster hims but ogled the sexy shes. The prices were Hollywood standard high with a good cocktail and wine selection, their beer options needed some expansion, and there was a small appetizer menu. I wavered between a 3/4-star review for this place. My sister had her birthday dinner at the restaurant on the first floor and then made arrangements for a 2-hour bowling session on one lane in The Spare Room. Unfortunately, dinner ran long and the manager at the Spare Room wasn't at all understanding or helpful with the reservation changes, she ended up losing $100 because we were late. I get it. It's a busy place and there are a lot of people waiting to bowl, but if you're going to charge $100/hour, then you should be a bit more flexible. PLUS - we had dinner in the restaurant in the same hotel, they should be working together to ensure that dinner, drinks and bowling flow smoothly. Bowling was fun. I liked the ambience and the service was decent. The guy managing the lanes was cool, he helped us keep score because no one could remember how to properly tally the points. I loved the vintage bowling shoes they provided and that you have an option to buy some cool socks ($10) if you didn't come prepared, but paying $28.00 for ONE double jack and coke is redic! Went to the Roosevelt hotel (which is gorgeous), the spare room also is! We wanted to try food here and ended up in the spare room to try something swanky and enjoy some fresh cocktails. I found the drink I ordered (Coral Fixation) too sweet and the peach and farro salad was meh in my opinion. It was drowned in dressing I didn't love and made the veggies in the salad soggy by the time I got to the bottom. The Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood is full of surprises. The Spare Room is definitely a pleasant one. I came here this past Wednesday night (12/19/18) for my second time and had a great experience. The Spare Room is really a low key bar that you probably wouldn't know about if not for staying at the hotel. I currently have friends staying here from outside the country, so despite catching a cold, I made the trek out here for a couple drinks. So what's so special about The Spare Room? Well, the two bowling lanes, of course. The Spare Room might be small, but they utilize the space perfectly. Tucked into the back corner is two bowling lanes, which run parallel to a lounge area with comfortable couches and seating. The bar is located towards the front, with enough space to mingle. Drinks here are priced appropriately and tend to satisfy. You don't need to be a guest at the hotel in order to come, which is nice. They do check ID though, so come prepared. On a Wednesday night, this bar was pretty empty. We didn't bowl, but I imagine the wait wouldn't have been long. There were a couple people bowling when we were there, and it was fun to watch. If you haven't been, I'd definitely say that this bar is worth checking out. I've been on a weekend once before, and it definitely gets pretty lively. How many bars do you know can say that they have their own bowling lanes in them? My guess is not many. The Spare Room Bar has two bowling lanes, which you can reserve for an hour for a whopping $100! If that's too pricey for you, you should just stick to having a few of their craft cocktails, which are amazing. The bartenders here take their mixology seriously. You can just specify what kind of liquor you want and the kind of flavor you prefer and they'll whip something up that'll suit your taste. They hit all the marks when it comes to creating a sexy, luxe interior. Plush seating, thoughtful lighting, a superior sound system and diverse playlist adds to the vibe. Love the "game room" theme.
