I actually got really lucky with a dining credit and my meal was practically free. If you love tonkotsu ramen, Tonchin is one you cannot miss. The matcha martini was absolutely perfect (sweet and bitter) and the banana pudding dessert was great if you love bananas (chunks of brûlée bananas and some not, cream, pudding, and wafers). This LA location is on Melrose Ave where there is a lot of street parking options all around the neighborhood. They do take reservations and accept walk ins as well. What a great experience! I went for the DineLA menu with my spouse, and we both really loved this place. I had the Tokyo 1992 Ramen with a fried fish bun, while my spouse had the Spicy Tan Tan and the Unagi rice ball. We also couldn't resist adding an order of gyoza, which I'm glad we did. We both loved the food. Everything was beautifully presented, and it was clear that this was not your typical hole-in-the-wall ramen spot. I especially enjoyed the fish bun. It was fried fish with a spicy coating and tartar sauce, and it was delicious. The ramen was excellent as well. My spouse really enjoyed the Unagi rice ball, which even came with a little fortune inside. The restaurant has a modern feel, and that same attention to presentation carried over to the dishes. The gyoza arrived in a cast-iron pan, and our server poured the sauce over it at the table, sending up a cloud of steam. It was a nice touch and made the dish feel a little more special. Another great experience at Tonchin. Made a reservation for a Wednesday dinner at 6:15. Was able to find street parking around the corner. Person at the front checked us in and walked us to our table. It was my first time using the Blackbird app and the server (didn't get her name) was super nice and walked me on how to use it (thank you!). We got the fish baos and the unagi "rice ball" to start with. Both great, the bao was really good, the sauce was great, the cilantro gave it the perfect touch. I thought the fish could have been a bit more flavorful but still great. The unagi rice ball was great, just really hard to eat without it falling apart. As for the ramen, we got my favorite, the smoked dashi ramen, and their classic tonkotsu. They also had their OG tonkotsu ramen on a special menu, which is similar to the classic but the main difference being the type of pork meat that they use (pork belly). The smoked dashi ramen was as good as I remembered it, but the classic tonkotstu ramen was tasting a bit better surprisingly. I wish the smoked dashi ramen had the option to choose between clams and pork. For dessert I was really excited to try their banana pudding and also got their matcha kaki-gori (shaved ice). Although the banana pudding was not bad, it was the kaki-gori that blew my mind. The tonchin honey cream sauce was absolutely delicious. The overall texture of the kaki-gori was perfect, not chunky at all. And best of all, this was free thanks to the Blackbird app promotion! We celebrated Mr's birthday dinner at Tonchin and overall had a wonderful experience. The food was truly amazing. We tried the fish, chicken, and vegan bao buns -- all were excellent. The buns were incredibly soft and the fillings were absolutely delicious. The curry chili cheese chicken is a must-have -- the curry powder coating was so aromatic and flavorful, easily one of the standout dishes of the night. Everyone enjoyed their ramen, but the unanimous favorite was the Miso Ginger Ramen. The Tonkotsu Classic was great as well. The ambience was perfect for a birthday celebration with friends -- lively yet comfortable for a group dinner. The only downside was related to cake cutting. I had confirmed in advance that bringing a cake would be fine, and was told yes, but we were not informed about the $5 per person cake-cutting charge. When we mentioned this, the response felt dismissive, stating it was a standard policy across Californian restaurants. As someone visiting from New Jersey who has celebrated many birthdays at restaurants without such a charge, a simple advance mention -- and a more courteous explanation -- would have been appreciated. I tried their NYC spot a few years ago and so was eager to try this location. -Tonchin Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu: Broth has a tasty salty kick to it which I liked and tasted clean/premium. Noodle texture was excellent and tasted like a premium version of the instant Shin Ramen. But the portion of noodles was small. Char siu resembled sliced ham which was not my cup of tea. -Spicy Tan Tan: The broth was okay with an adequate degree of spiciness. Same for the menma - and without those, it was still too spicy for me personally but I was able to just eat some of the noodles without the soup out of the bowl. Took the rest home for my Gf. Sadly won't be able to bring my family here. They wouldn't let me swap out the soy meat for the nitamago egg, so I got it as an extra. It was cold cause it wasn't in the soup but that worked out well cause the soup would make it spicy for me. Since I'm still very hungry I ordered a mango Kaki-Gori mango thing - after reading the reviews and talking to the staff. It's yum. Lovely. The host and manager type were nice and kind. My server / bartender was ok. Prices are high and they add a "operations fee" of 2.75% which I am not a fan of. It's illegal now to say it goes to the staff since it didn't... but I really don't feel it's ok to talk that on the 20% tip and 10% tax. Ambiance at 6pm on a Monday was nice. Not too crowded or loud. I can imagine it gets to be both of those things at peak times. High ceiling and concrete floors will not be helpful sound wise so if that's a thing... keep it in mind. read more

There's no parking lot so you need to find street parking or pay $10 for valet parking at the front. There's plenty of neighborhood streets where you can park and walk over. Kakigori - Strawberry - 5/5 the shaved ice was nice and fluffy and was well sauced. the strawberry flavor tasted very fresh and not artificial. Price: Ramen was about $20-25 on average which is on the pricier side, but it's great quality ramen and I would pay that amount again for it. We spent a bit more than usual - about $160 for 4 people but it was because we ordered a lot more food. I think you could just get away with ordering 1 ramen per person and an appetizer to share and still be very full. The Atmosphere: Moody lighting, good for a date night or a nice dinner out. TLDR: Do you want to feel like you planned something nice by making a reservation and spending a bit more money for good ramen? This is the spot. It's a 4.5 in my book, but I rounded up because the ramen is good. Not groundbreaking, but it can compete in a very competitive field. Tokyo Rich Tsukemen: Rich with a deep fish flavor. The broth isn't as thick as the tsukemen specialty shops, but I didn't think it mattered. The flavor profile was close if not an equal to the many specialty shops. It however lacked the post-taste surprise layers that a few of my preferred tsukemen places had. Nonetheless, it's a recommendation I can still make. The downside would be the noodle and chashu portion, as I had A LOT of broth left over when I finished, and I wasn't given an option to thin out the rich broth to drink by itself. Tonchin Classic Tonkotsu Ramen: When eating in more expensive ramen spots, it is difficult not to find a comparison within the same or a lower price point. The noodle, egg, and chashu is what you'd expect from an $18 a bowl spot, which is good. We'll chalk up the difference to rent. The problem is that the broth looks like it costs $18 but tastes like the $14 spots. This isn't ideal if I'm looking for tonkotsu ramen and I'm paying a premium for something I'd get in a casual ramen shop. Smoked Dashi: Think tonkotsu ramen at the bottom, but they threw in smoked fish oil on top. The chashu is replaced with clams, and the rest of the ensemble isn't that different. What a difference the smoked fish oil makes, as it takes something basic that was given an LA price tag and transforms it into something I've never had before. You still get the quality noodles, and toppings, but the broth is smokey, seafoody, and becomes porky the lower you go. This is the type of creativity and layering I'm looking for when paying a premium for ramen. Service: It's good. We were seated outside, which is definitely extra annoying for the staff, but they got us everything we needed. Ambiance: The outside was whatever. The plants and the lowered nature of the restaurant help create this barrier between the diners and the sidewalk. The inside is what I'd expect from a modern ramen shop that serves alcohol. Dimmed lights, house music, and a constant rumble of noise created by young professionals and a handful of silver foxes and vixens. read more

This place is very nice to eat at in Hollywood. I got the Tonchin classic Tokyo tonkotsu, black cod fish bun, and a yuzu margarita. The tebasaki and curry and cheese wings which were decent. The tonkotsu broth was good, the roasted chashu pork was very good and different than the normal fatty ones. It was overall good. The black cod fish bun was very good. The pork belly was kind of on the thin side, but it tasted rich, I knew it was good quality. The handmade noodles were also perfectly cooked, chewy and just soft enough.
