Got dessert for our party of 4 on 05/31/2026 at 3:30 PM at Tonchin. The spacious restaurant was mostly empty; there were only two other tables besides us. This one star review is for "Nestor." The restaurant charges a 3% credit card processing fee, which was written on the receipt. Other reviews have mentioned this fee as well. Since there's a card processing fee, we paid with $50 cash for our $39 check. We asked for our change back. Nestor stated "we don't give change." We asked why couldn't we get our change back. If anything we would want our $50 back so that we can find some smaller bills within our party. Nestor immediately became defensive and started raising his voice. My. parents could hear him all the way across the restaurant. There was another table sitting near the cash register who witnessed the entire thing as well. Nestor said, "STOP TALKING. STOP TALKING. If you could just learn how to READ, it says that on the receipt." It does not say anywhere on the receipt regarding Tonchin not giving change back. We understand credit card processing fees, but if the customer pays in cash, and you don't have change, just say that you don't have change! Never been gaslit so hard by someone working in service before. If I want someone to keep the change, that should be my decision. This did NOT have to be a big deal. I have never had anyone scream in my face at a restaurant, telling me to learn how to read. Absolutely ridiculous. We ended up leaving $40 in cash and left the restaurant. We emailed info@tonchinla regarding what happened, received a call from Chris, and we explained what happened. All he said was that he wanted to "make it up to us." How, I don't know. Best ramen in LA! Came in with high expectations from a friend's recommendation and it did not disappoint. Came in with a reservation and we were seated promptly after arriving. Service was good, attentive, and quick. Ordered the tsukune buns, edamame, classic tonkatsu, and ban ban noodles which were all hits. Their yuzu highball is also spectacular, strong, but smooth. I don't know how they make it but it was so addictive I had to get another. Don't skip out on their desserts either. I tried the mango kaki-gori which was great, but the tokyo banana stole the show. The curry chili cheese chicken is a must-have -- the curry powder coating was so aromatic and flavorful, easily one of the standout dishes of the night. Everyone enjoyed their ramen, but the unanimous favorite was the Miso Ginger Ramen. The Tonkotsu Classic was great as well. The ambience was perfect for a birthday celebration with friends -- lively yet comfortable for a group dinner. The only downside was related to cake cutting. I had confirmed in advance that bringing a cake would be fine, and was told yes, but we were not informed about the $5 per person cake-cutting charge. When we mentioned this, the response felt dismissive, stating it was a standard policy across Californian restaurants. As someone visiting from New Jersey who has celebrated many birthdays at restaurants without such a charge, a simple advance mention -- and a more courteous explanation -- would have been appreciated. I tried their NYC spot a few years ago and so was eager to try this location. -Tonchin Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu: Broth has a tasty salty kick to it which I liked and tasted clean/premium. Noodle texture was excellent and tasted like a premium version of the instant Shin Ramen. But the portion of noodles was small. Char siu resembled sliced ham which was not my cup of tea. -Spicy Tan Tan: The broth was okay with an adequate degree of spiciness. Broth did have an interesting flavor that resembled Dan Dan mian. -Strawberry Kakigori: This was okay and the main thing carrying this dessert was the cream on top. I asked about the miso ginger ramen and if it was spicy at all and was assured it's not. I asked to take out the soy meat since I asked and it is marinated and has a kick to it. Same for the menma - and without those, it was still too spicy for me personally but I was able to just eat some of the noodles without the soup out of the bowl. Took the rest home for my Gf. Sadly won't be able to bring my family here. They wouldn't let me swap out the soy meat for the nitamago egg, so I got it as an extra. It was cold cause it wasn't in the soup but that worked out well cause the soup would make it spicy for me. Since I'm still very hungry I ordered a mango Kaki-Gori mango thing - after reading the reviews and talking to the staff. It's yum. Lovely. The host and manager type were nice and kind. My server / bartender was ok. Prices are high and they add a "operations fee" of 2.75% which I am not a fan of. It's illegal now to say it goes to the staff since it didn't... but I really don't feel it's ok to talk that on the 20% tip and 10% tax. Ambiance at 6pm on a Monday was nice. Not too crowded or loud. I can imagine it gets to be both of those things at peak times. High ceiling and concrete floors will not be helpful sound wise so if that's a thing... keep it in mind. read more

The broth quality here is top notch and the amount of people there proves to be a stable so make sure to get a reservation in advance. I usually go to Killer Noodle in Sawtelle if I want tan tan ramen but I decided to try this place out. There's no parking lot so you need to find street parking or pay $10 for valet parking at the front. There's plenty of neighborhood streets where you can park and walk over. The Service: We made no reservations on a Saturday, but we were able to be seated for a party of 4. The ramen was so bouncey and I love the texture. This paired well with the rich broth which coated the noodles nicely when dipping. Kakigori - Strawberry - 5/5 the shaved ice was nice and fluffy and was well sauced. the strawberry flavor tasted very fresh and not artificial. Price: Ramen was about $20-25 on average which is on the pricier side, but it's great quality ramen and I would pay that amount again for it. We spent a bit more than usual - about $160 for 4 people but it was because we ordered a lot more food. I think you could just get away with ordering 1 ramen per person and an appetizer to share and still be very full. The Atmosphere: Moody lighting, good for a date night or a nice dinner out. It was dark, but it wasn't too dark to be able to enjoy your food. Very clean and well decorated interior. Parking: Street parking or valet. TLDR: Do you want to feel like you planned something nice by making a reservation and spending a bit more money for good ramen? This is the spot. It's a 4.5 in my book, but I rounded up because the ramen is good. Not groundbreaking, but it can compete in a very competitive field. Tokyo Rich Tsukemen: Rich with a deep fish flavor. The broth isn't as thick as the tsukemen specialty shops, but I didn't think it mattered. The flavor profile was close if not an equal to the many specialty shops. It however lacked the post-taste surprise layers that a few of my preferred tsukemen places had. Nonetheless, it's a recommendation I can still make. The downside would be the noodle and chashu portion, as I had A LOT of broth left over when I finished, and I wasn't given an option to thin out the rich broth to drink by itself. Tonchin Classic Tonkotsu Ramen: When eating in more expensive ramen spots, it is difficult not to find a comparison within the same or a lower price point. The noodle, egg, and chashu is what you'd expect from an $18 a bowl spot, which is good. We'll chalk up the difference to rent. The problem is that the broth looks like it costs $18 but tastes like the $14 spots. This isn't ideal if I'm looking for tonkotsu ramen and I'm paying a premium for something I'd get in a casual ramen shop. Smoked Dashi: Think tonkotsu ramen at the bottom, but they threw in smoked fish oil on top. The chashu is replaced with clams, and the rest of the ensemble isn't that different. What a difference the smoked fish oil makes, as it takes something basic that was given an LA price tag and transforms it into something I've never had before. You still get the quality noodles, and toppings, but the broth is smokey, seafoody, and becomes porky the lower you go. This is the type of creativity and layering I'm looking for when paying a premium for ramen. Service: It's good. We were seated outside, which is definitely extra annoying for the staff, but they got us everything we needed. Ambiance: The outside was whatever. The plants and the lowered nature of the restaurant help create this barrier between the diners and the sidewalk. The inside is what I'd expect from a modern ramen shop that serves alcohol. Dimmed lights, house music, and a constant rumble of noise created by young professionals and a handful of silver foxes and vixens. read more

The food didn't disappoint, I got the Tokyo 1992, which was a rich pork tonkotsu broth and a strip of premium pork belly. The pork belly was kind of on the thin side, but it tasted rich, I knew it was good quality. The handmade noodles were also perfectly cooked, chewy and just soft enough. Don't know why more people aren't talking about this spot because it was phenomenal! We came post hike so we not dressed appropriately (it's a very stylish restaurant) but we still had an amazing time and loved everything we tried! The apps were all fantastic -- we got the tsukune buns (didn't realize they had wasabi so it was surprisingly spicy but it worked), the shrimp rice ball & and chashu rice ball (they're more like handrolls) -- both were fantastic. The matcha mocktail was also soo yummy; one of the best matcha drinks I've had! The ramen honestly paled in comparison to the appetizers but it was still super hearty, filling, and comforting. The jammy egg was done well. The pork was thinly sliced which was interesting. Was curious about their mazemen option. Tokyo banana dessert was incredible!! Highly recommend saving room for that. We went to Tonchin LA for dinner with the family and honestly, it lived up to all the hype. We ordered the Tonchin Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu, the Maruro, and finished with the coffee shaved ice for dessert. Every single dish was excellent. The ramen was rich and comforting without being too heavy, the Maruro was packed with flavor, and the coffee shaved ice was the perfect way to end the meal--light, refreshing, and not overly sweet. One of those desserts you keep talking about afterward. The atmosphere really stood out too. It's my second time here and I gotta say it's one of my favorite ramen spots! We got the Tsubaki wings and shishito peppers for starters. Both were seasoned to perfection.
