This place deserves 100000 stars! We were lucky to find this place as we were staying at sycamore springs and all the food by our hotel and beaches was subpar . We came here on our last night for dinner and WOW! Everything on the menu was delicious. We had grilled artichokes, cheese pudding bread, tri tip, fried chicken, and the ramen. If I could give 10 stars I would. One of THE BEST meals I have ever eaten. My husband and I were staying in oceano for the weekend and he was doing a lot of research on the best places to eat around the Pismo area. He had found a list from diners drive ins and dives and we found the spoon trade from there. We watched the episode and were immediately sold on the chicken and dumplings. When we first walked in, we were welcomed by the female owner. We let her know that it was our first time here and she gave us menus, greeted us and was extremely friendly. Our waiter was Drew, he was so awesome!! we also let him know that it was our first time there and he gave us some great recommendations, asked if he could start us off with some drinks and appetizers. He let us know that almost everything in the kitchen is made from scratch as well as farm to table and that the restaurant owns the bakery across the street so all of their bread is made fresh from the bakery. For the appetizer, we got the grilled sourdough with baratta and olive oil. The sourdough was delicious one of the best I've ever had. The Baratta and olive oil mixture was creamy, it came with a side of garlic and butter, and we had to stop ourselves from eating the entire plate so we could save room for dinner. For dinner I ordered the chicken and dumplings soup and my husband ordered the hot honey fried chicken. What I really liked was that I could see our meal being cooked while we were inside of the restaurant and we got to see the true craft of what the spoon trade does. Food isn't just a meal to them, it's art. I also ordered a small garden salad, which was extremely fresh and delicious filled with gem Romain, carrots, and snap peas, as well as a Dijon dressing that was the perfect combination of tangy, sweet, and savory. Since it was our first time, Drew brought out a small sample of the butternut squash soup for us to try. It was both dairy free and vegan- also delicious!! Both of our dishes, came out hot and fresh, and the portions were huge! The dumplings soup was creamy, it included fresh vegetables such as carrots and peas, and the biscuits were delicious. They were not dry like many other chicken and dumpling soups that I've had. My husband's honey fried chicken was not greasy. The chicken was cooked perfectly. It was moist, juicy, and not dry. The hot honey ratio was perfect and you can tell that the chicken was organic and fresh. We were able to eat most of our meal but also wanted to save room for dessert. I ordered the brown sugar pudding with petite butter cookies and my husband ordered the Basque cheesecake that had seasonal fruit. We split both of our desserts so we each could try and both of them were delicious. Our favorite was the brown sugar pudding, which we are still craving almost 2 weeks later! The restaurant was very clean, you could tell it was filled with locals who the owner knew well. It was filled with a very friendly and family oriented atmosphere. Our time at the spoon trade will be a memory that we will have forever, as I stated previously it was one of the best meals that we've ever had. We can't wait to return to the Pismo area so we can go back to this restaurant and enjoy the experience of the spoon trade. read more

My first impression I was a pretty weary of the high prices. BUT, the food was clearly elevated. I could hear other customers talking about their meals being so good. I got a cup of cauliflower soup and the beet bread appetizer ($30 with tip). I was greeted when I walked in and offered to have my choice of seating. The service was good, staff were friendly (the owner was my server). They have a dog friendly patio which is always a win in my book. Inside was cute, clean, contemporary and cozy. Highly recommend. I'd be here 3x week if the prices were 15% lower!! However, as much as I may feel it's a few dollar over priced, it is farm fresh and amazingly prepared with beautiful presentation - so - I can't really fault them. read more

Please don't go here and eat up all the unreal, most crispy, piping hot, drizzled in honey and fried rosemary fried chicken. Definitely don't top it with the kimchi or the hot sauce they deliver with the top off already upon request. Their house cocktails are so good - I had the grapefruit sparkler/grapefruit vermouth, bubbles and a lime. Tasty! This place is gold! Brooke, one of the owners, found us the best place to sit: Brooke's Nook. We had a little corner all to ourselves including the best view of the sunset. The portions are generous, our server, Noelle, got our fried chicken order in early so we wouldn't have to wait too long to eat, and Brooke came to check on us and ended up telling us the dearest story about how she and her husband travelled the US sampling fried chicken and devising their own recipe and their concept. (She also included the generosity of the city of grover beach in helping them stay open during the pandemic and all the changes they'd gone through to keep their place open). Honestly, it felt like being part of a warm family. Plenty of space for groups and an open kitchen plus, of course, the hundreds of spoons decorating the walls. No under/overcooked sad vegetables here--everything was caramelized to perfection and really brought out the best in the fresh produce. My partner had the duck ramen and they reported that it was equally outstanding! For dessert we had the pot de creme with shortbread cookies; unbelievably good! Really really good. We happened to catch a repeat of Guy Fieri's Diners, Dives & Drive Ins before we traveled down here from NorCal and this place was highlighted. We got the sliced and grilled sourdough bread and it was absolutely to die for. Apparently this place also owns the Grover Beach Sourdough store across from the restaurant and their bread was some of the best we've ever had. In addition, we had the kale/cauliflower salad with white anchovies and the famous fried bologna sandwich with the crispy potatoes. Both excellent dishes. The croutons of course are made from the same sourdough bread and they are perfect. We were way too stuffed for dessert which is a shame. Highly recommend! read more

Finally had a chance to eat here, and now upset that we haven't been coming regularly. It's very casual, and the staff is friendly. The prices are on the higher side for this style of restaurant, but the food does live up to the price. Everything we had was an excellent version of that dish that exceeded not only expectations but also what can be had at other restaurants who claim to specialize in a specific dish or are even named for it. We hadn't been to the spoon trade in quite some time so decided to go. Our server was Drew. He was very busy. All the wait staff were terrific making sure we had water, etc.. I tried a couple of wines one that I picked and one that I guess the bartender thought I might like which I did. It was a Sauvignon Blanc. My husband and I both had the fish of the day which was halibut it was so good. I had broccoli instead of asparagus. It had leeks which were terrific because they were buttery with sliced almonds. I ended up having dessert which was a chocolate chip cookie with ice cream and caramel sauce. Was very good and not too big so I could eat it. We did not order any bread but might next time and the fried potatoes looked excellent. So they have Fish every now and then at market price. I think for the most part everything else is the same on the menu. It was very crowded and a little noisy, but not a big deal. It started to rain so some people that were sitting outside. Kiddos were looking to have noodle soup and we stumbled across this spot. I originally did not expect anything but soon was amazed at the execution of each dish (halibut and the cheese bread pudding in particular) and we liked it enough to come back for dinner to try more dishes. We ended up having 3 duck noodles in a day. The chicken waffle was so good that the kids said it doesn't need syrup. The mussels porridge is thick and yet interestingly not too filling either. I enjoyed the sake cocktail as well. We had no room for dessert after dinner but went back to their bakery across the street for breakfast. The Spoon Trade in Grover Beach has been added to our destination stops while visiting the Central Coast. We love this area for their wineries and outstanding restaurants. Our dinner at The Spoon Trade reinforced our need to continue to lodge in the Arroyo Grande/Pismo Beach area. The restaurant is small but does offer nice patio seating. Our server, Jonet was absolutely top notch. She was personable and very efficient in expediting service. We also had the honor of visiting with the owner, Brooke. She made us feel welcome and part of the family. The menu is seasonal as they source locally for their menu products. Everything seems to be made from scratch in-house and you can taste it in every bite. We started with grilled sourdough bread that came with butter and a garlic oil. It was the best sourdough bread I have experienced. My wife had the Kitchen Noodle Soup and I ordered the chicken and waffles. The soup was outstanding. It had an egg that was infused with the broth and very tender pork belly with a mountain of noodles. My chicken was crunchy, moist and loaded with flavor. It epitomized the term "finger licken chicken". The waffle was both sweet and savory and maintained its crunch. I added some of their homemade hot sauce to the chicken which sent this dish to Flavor Town. We are so impressed with this restaurant we plan to bring our wine group next time we are in town. On vacation in Pismo Beach, our family stumbled upon this little magical place. They had great options for the kids including an amazing grilled cheese and the best waffle - covered in honey. The decor of spoons kept the kids busy while the adults enjoyed surprisingly fresh food and the best tomato soup I've ever had and I'm not usually a fan. It wasn't acidic and you could taste almost every herb. The server was super helpful and gave us recommendations to other local spots. The only downside was this place wasn't open Monday - Tuesday because if it was we would have eaten there every day! read more

So, the only reason I am giving the Spoon Trade two stars is because of our super awesome server and the sourdough bread. That's it! Our server was extremely sweet and attentive, and really tried to make sure I had something I could eat. However, the bald guy who refilled our water was very rude and didn't even acknowledge us when we thanked him for the refills... the dude never smiled and had a constant frown on his face. Not a good image! I will say the place is super relaxed and laid back, BUT if you want limited options available to you on the menu, then this place is perfect for you. Because of the lack of options on the menu, I ordered a basic green salad and a loaf of sourdough. The salad dressing was too salty, the salad greens were slightly wilted, and there wasn't enough dressing in it. The bread was amazing! However, my step son enjoyed his sword fish, and my husband said the burger he ordered was substandard. I was extremely disappointed in my dinning experience. Kudos to the people that have enjoyed their food... I am just not one of them. read more

This place is so good. The sourdough loaf is the most amazing bread. We enjoyed the artichoke with bernaise sauce as well. My wife opted for a bowl of their soup of the day which was a delicious purple yam bisque. I ordered the fried bologna sandwich. It is wrong how good that sandwich is. Had 2 dinners and one lunch this week. We've eaten here 3 times before too, so I feel we have an understanding of their food/service. Overall ST has a small/limited menu. Ingredients are locally sourced and thoughtfully prepared. The atmosphere is relaxed, prices are reasonable. The key for me when visiting ST is to go with an open mind. Their menu changes with the seasons, so what you had once might not be on the menu the next visit. They always have some vegetarian offerings, and their star dish might not have any proteins, so being open to a new experience helps. read more

Delectable and Delicious!!! Everything was perfection from beginning to end. I'm always a sucker for a good Benedict but this was the best one I've ever had! Having all of their own sourdough made fresh daily across the street they have access to the most perfect bread for pairing with each dish. The toasted bread and thick cut bacon (presented like pork belly... so good!) under the perfectly poached egg was incredible. The cheesy pudding paired with a little seasonal soup, my gosh.
