Another wonderful evening at The St. James Tea Room! Dickens, A Christmas Carol was the theme this December. Service was excellent as always! We were in the Pemberley room. Love Pride and Prejudice! The tea and food were delicious, I love the desserts, the cheese cake especially. I also love the sugarplum and the final tea which I can't remember the name of, but it tasted like mint and had a delicious chocolate finish. A really well thought out and immersive experience. The menus are tasty and varied, the decor and atmosphere is perfrct for afternoon tea, and the staff outfits are the cherry on top that tie it all together. The servers are very polite, professional, and attentive. I was unsure of how dining here alone would play out, but they put me in a little booth that probably would've seated 2-3 normally, brought the tea and treats, and generally let me be unless I signaled for a new pot of tea. Which is how I like it! It was nice to just sip on some tea and work on some crosswords. If you get there too early, you can browse the tea and teaware selection to kill time before seating. Such a lovely time, can't wait to go back! My neice came to visit and I wanted to surprise her with a visit to St. James Tearoom. We reserved a private room and chose the fruit tea experience. The theme was Tea in the Hundred Acre Wood and every last detail was perfect. The entire venue was decorated with little photo ops around every corner. Our room was perfectly set with pretty little decorations and details. Each tea and tea service was wonderful as our hostess made sure to guide us and give us pointers on how to go throughout each tea and snack, even helping us keep pace so we could enjoy each portion of our tea time and treats. The menu was wonderfully themed and had a variety of sweet and savory treats with each tea complimenting each course. At your scheduled time, which was 630 for us, they ring a bell and you head down the hallway and greeted and taken to your room. We were in the Pemberly room. They close it off with curtains so you have your own private area and it was so nice! Turned off our cell phones and had a nice relaxing hour and a half conversation with lots of laughter and reminiscing. They brought out the three tier platter, 1st teir is the savories, 2nd tier is the bread and 3rd is desserts. The Hong Kong salad that was a perfect size, the cucumber avocado tea sandwich was just the perfect bite, the meatloaf sandwich had an onion jam with bacon and a hint of spice that was just right, then we moved on to the meatball and potato skewer which had spices that made us want more. Lastly was the fluff pastry with the brie and apricot inside. It was a great ending to the 1st flight. Moving on to the scone and ube milk bread. The scone with clotted cream and blood orange curd was the perfect combination of sweetness and that ube bread was so fluffy. 3rd and last flight was the dessert flight. Those desserts were excellent. My absolute favorite was the mocha hazelnut dacquoise. The cookie was crispy on the outside with a chewy center which the perfect dollop of hazelnut spread on top, chefs kiss! The Italian rum panna cotta with salted caramel was my second favorite and I dont even like custard like textures, but that flavor was out of this world! The rhubarb gooseberry tart was my least favorite. It was a little too tart (haha) for liking. Our server Elijah was absolutely amazing and kind. The St. James tearoom is the best restaurant and food experience to exist in New Mexico. The ambiance always matches the menu theme perfectly. As an experienced St. James Tearoom goer, I'd recommend going to the Alice in Wonderland menu in June, the Lord of the Rings menu every other November, and the Jane Austen menu in August. (Honorable mention for World of Wizards in September) The Lemon Soufflé herbal tea, Earl a la Crème earl gray traditional black, and the Lady Day blueberry pomegranate tea are all fantastic. I also love that they offer an unlimited number of teapots for no additional charge at teatime. Every single server is phenomenal and the service is always memorable. If you go, ask for Nevaeha, Makenna, or Bailey. But really, never had a bad experience with any of the servers and they're all always excellent. If you're looking to call and request a room I'd recommend Styles or Woodridings for small parties and Pemberly or Bird & Baby for big groups. Had the option to try patio seating a couple times and it feels like having tea with fairies in the evening seatings when all the garden lights are on. My mom, her friend and I visited the St. James Tearoom and it was a great experience for the most part. Service was great. Our waitress took wonderful care of us. She was not overbearing which made us enjoy our tea sitting. She was also very knowledgeable about the teas they offered as well as the food offerings. However, it would have been just a tad better if we had a better understanding of which tea worked best with each tier of food we purchased. The ambience and atmosphere was nice and cozy. The only part that was not quite satisfactory was the size of the tea room for 3 people (2 of which were handicap). It would be better if there were rooms available that could accommodate disabled and handicapped patrons a little better. The entrance of the tearoom was a little tight for anyone who is disabled or handicapped, which makes it very difficult to navigate. However the staff did the best they could with the limited space they had. I also think they can revamp their "pre sitting" questions to ensure they are being mindful of food allergies. And they are better equipped to tell their patrons what foods and teas to avoid in the case of any allergies. The food spread was AWESOME! It was a great selection of savories and sweets. Despite the space inadequacy, the food and service were definitely great to experience. I do recommend for anyone who isn't disabled or handicapped. read more

I've been wanting to come to tea here for years, and I finally did recently! It's a great date place, and in the Fall inside with its old-fashioned classy mood, nice dim lighting, exquisite tea set, decor, and feel to the whole place. I felt like we were transported back in time, which was very fun. Our server was very nice, expertly had all the foods and teas and everything memorized, and came by the right amount of times so we could get what we needed and be checked in on, but also have plenty of time and privacy alone. It's so nice to feel we could relax and enjoy the experience! The food was delicious, the savories and the sweets. I was able to get everything vegetarian, and my date was able to get everything gluten free, and I enjoyed how everything looked so similar though slightly different. There was plenty of food and drink. The teas were nice, but not very exciting. Please offer a vegan menu, and also non-dairy milk! read more

It's a good thing we don't live locally or we would be in every couple months. That's actually a specific amount of time as we found out they change the theme every couple months. I planned on taking my daughter here for months. When the trip got closer I went on their site to make a reservation, and I was shocked to realize that our days were all completely booked. In fact it was booked out another month or so. But I am stubborn. I kept checking the site every couple days to see if a cancelation would pop up. 3 days before the Albuquerque days I went on and I was so happy to see a green spot lit up next to 4pm on the Tuesday. There was literally no other spot open for the 50 days after. I jumped on it immediately before it was gone. My daughter didn't know what to expect(me either) but I gave a heads up we should probably dress nice. After a quick parking we walked into a truly original experience. The staff was completely in character for a nice tea. We got our our draped off room and the server was very kind. She came out with different teas and a series of platters that in the end actually filled us up. I don't think the St James tearoom needs my recommendation, it's already very popular and well reviewed. But I'm honored to say it is one of the coolest things you can do in town. read more

The front desk staff were surprisingly rude and dismissive it honestly felt like they only cater to a very specific crowd (white/Anglo-Saxon) and treat everyone else like an inconvenience. The service overall was poor, and the food was just average. I still can't understand why anyone would make a cucumber sandwich sweet. The decorations and themes are so cute and thought out. You feel like you're in England at an authentic tea party. The waiters are sweet and do a great job at rehearsing their lines for the themes. Walking into St. James was like being in a magic place! They definitely likened the place to the theme of Harry Potter! It felt exclusive and exciting! The spot they have given for our party of 4 was the favorite. It was comfortable and closest to the entrance. Every party had their own section or "room", and booth seating. We lucked out and got the most requested seating area. The attention to detail was amazing! The menu represented the world of Harry Potter tremendously! We enjoyed every moment and were so full at the end! I tried everything! I couldn't choose a favorite bc I liked it all! The extensive photos can only show how magical it was! Came here during a trip to ABQ for balloon fiesta. Make sure you make a res in advance. The ambiance is super charming, with little nooks for each party. Your res is good for a 2 hour experience. The theme was Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days, so we had some ethnic influence in our tea set. The savory sandwich course was paired with a black tea. I enjoyed the brie and apricot puff best. The scone and ube bread course was paired with another black tea. The clotted cream and apricot sauce were delish. The dessert course was paired with a rooibos, and this was our fave. Because we were both celebrating birthdays, they gave us a little sachet of the rooibos to take home. I have heard so much about the Saint James and I am glad that I was able to give tea a try. The theme for our visit was Sherlock Holmes. My favorite item was the phyllo cigar with feta and Spanish chorizo. The decorations are adorable. The experience came with three different teas to try. Our server was great. You can tell that the owners have put in a lot of time and effort to make this an authentic tea experience. The rooms are semi private, there was curtain around our table. We were able to hear the conversations from neighboring patrons. While I have had afternoon tea at other places, this was my first time here. I arrived early, checked in, And had approached a front of house staff member. I had asked her how seating worked, she seemed perturbed that I was bothering her, had raised her voice, started talking slowly, and was extremely condescending and unwelcoming. I didn't feel comfortable asking her any more questions. My guest was a person of color and when she checked in, under my name, they were not able to find the reservation and had told her sorry, you don't have a reservation today. My guest also felt unwelcome. I met my guest at the front desk and asked for the reservation and we were then able to verify. While the experience was unique and special to Albuquerque, I did. Not feel welcome and my guest did not feel welcome at your establishment. This is enough for me to not return. read more

I can't believe I've waited so long to go here! It's such a special experience. I didn't fully understand the experience piece until I attended an evening tea. I went to another tea room in town and based off of that experience, assumed all tea rooms were overpriced and bland. Here they are very thoughtful in the tea they serve along with the food. You have small bites offered to you in courses and they pack a good flavor! You leave here feeling full and satisfied off of the courses you receive. They put so much care in the food and tea that they describe to you in detail each item before it is served to you. The building has a nice rustic feel and you are offered a little nook for you and your party. The seats are plush and it is a relaxing experience. I can see why people are regulars here! We were used to the exceptional Brown Palace High Tea in Denver. You get option of champagne and tea with unlimited savories and sweets. Here you have to pay a LOT extra. This place is adorable! From the moment you walk in to their garden you feel like you are in a different place and have walked back in time. St James Tearom changes their creative themes monthly. We happened to visit during their Alice in Wonderland theme. I felt as though I walked down the rabbit hole. They have a beautiful garden that you can choose to have your meal and tea, but we opted for their indoor dining seating which has curtains between each setting to offer privacy and elegance. Their decor has a soft Victorian flair. Traditional finger sandwiches were given an Alive in Wonderland twist that really delivered, The course included a fresh fig and Parmesan salad and tiny hand pies. Next was their bite size skewered meatballs. Their ham croissants were airy and light and I loved their traditional sandwich which was adorned with a cucumber cut as a butterfly. It is all in the details including their Queen of Heart cookies. You will leave with a full belly that's for sure. The course also included a chocolate pastry, bite size cakes and bite sized buttery scones. We had their delicious black tea which was so soft and light to the palate. Their service in itself deserves a five star rating for their attentiveness and attention to detail. The minute you walk in the door you are cheerily greeted by the staff, and when the bell rings for your tea time, you are escorted to your individual room. There the magic begins - you are given two hours of excellent customer service and attention in a setting that makes you feel like you are thousands of miles away. There is always a theme and the menu reflects that. Decorations in the tearoom are tailored to that theme as well. I just experienced the Tale of a Narnian Teatime this month. You are served three different types of tea that compliment the different types of food that are on the menu. Each food is described to you as it is presented by the server. Then the server goes away and lets you get on with your tea, stopping by occasionally to make sure all is well. The food is so delicious, the servers are so gracious. I have gone back to partake of this delight time and time again, and will continue to do so. Came here with a friend two weeks ago, just because. I've been to the Ivy Tearoom before (but it's hard to compare!) and neither of us had been to St James. At our reservation time, we were led down the hallway to a private room with a couch (separated by a curtain), with everything very Victorian-style. We were served quickly (and they came by often to check on us), and given that the tea's theme was "La Vie en Rose" for February, our server was even dressed like Belle! With her hair pulled back in a ponytail and a similar outfit to the blue and white one Belle wore at the library. They give lots of food (way more than I could eat) and everything is very rich and savory. Our menu was a beef bourguignon (beef stew with a tiny biscuit in the shape of a heart), an apple gorgonzola quiche (which was fantastic by the way), ham and cheese sandwich, asparagus salad, a traditional English tea sandwich, and "Lavendar Provence" tea for the first course ; a heart shaped rose almond scone with pomegranate rose curd, the traditional St. James scone, and black "French kiss" tea for the 2nd course; and a mini chocolate cake, strawberry mint macaron, "Mother of Pearl" green tea, and a butterscotch mousse with cherry coulis. The gift shop is fantastic, and they even have the traditional fascinators that the British royals tend to wear (I ended up buying a small bag of the "French kiss" tea). One downfall of St. James is the steep cost (almost $15 more than Ivy). Our two hours went by too quick and wish there was less of a time restriction. Make sure to stop by the garden and the pond in front of St. James before you leave. Today I went for the first time to St. James Tearoom. My wife and daughters have been here before a few times. They've spoken highly of it. So, we decided that this would be a good place to celebrate two of our daughters' birthdays as well as my own. I was extremely impressed. St. James is a place which you go to for both the experience as well as the food. Both are exceptional. When going here be prepared to spend two hours. This is a place you go to spend time with agreeable company, talk upon whatever issues you wish and eat slowly, enjoying the food and company. St. James has an interesting approach by choosing a theme each monthly which they then arrange the meal and teas to fit with the theme. When I went in March 2021, the theme was Dublin's Fare. So, all the teas and delectables had an Irish flare. The three-course meal comes all together on a three-tier tray. The top tier is where you begin. The second course is on the middle tray, so the last tray, third course, is your dessert. Each course comes with its own tea. It was fun to both experience different delights as well as teas I've never tasted before. Toughing briefly upon a couple, my favorite from the first course was a beef & ale "pot of gold" with a cheese biscuit. Wonderful. In the second course my favorite was the Guinness World Record Irish Soda Bread served with whiskey butter. What a wonderful collection of tastes! Those are my favorites, but the rest were only marginally from being one of my favorites. My wife and daughters tell me that St. James have chosen other interesting themes in the past. One which they've repeated at least twice, is related to J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit, so the food was what Tolkien may have written in his books. Another time they did Around the World in 80 days, so the food included various delicacies from countries around the world. The one unifying ingredient is teas. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was nice to eat delicious food, drink wonderful and warm teas and be pampered. Be aware that your will pay for this, but I stress it is worth it. Just plan accordingly. Only at St James does one get three teas, a private room, and stylized waitstaff. Had a wonderful assortment of herbal teas (purchased one on my way out). The food was good! The choices were yummy and fun. Yup!!!!! It's the best! Visited my daughters over the holidays so had high tea at the Crystal Palace in SF and Shakespeare's Corner in San Diego.
