Only at St James does one get three teas, a private room, and stylized waitstaff. Had a wonderful assortment of herbal teas (purchased one on my way out). The food was good! The choices were yummy and fun. Yup!!!!! It's the best! Visited my daughters over the holidays so had high tea at the Crystal Palace in SF and Shakespeare's Corner in San Diego. This is one of my favorite places to go in Albuquerque. Every month they choose a new theme. Most of them are based on English literature like Murder on the Orient Express, Mary Poppins, and for you fantasy buffs, the Hobbit, Recipes from the Wizarding World (based off Harry Potter), Narnia, etc. The rooms, termed nooks or libraries for larger parties, are each based on an estate or location frequented by a popular English author, celebrity, or character such as Pemberley (Pride and Prejudice), Hill Top Manor (Beatrix Potter), and Stratfield Saye (Sir Arthur Wellesley). My personal favorite is the small room (described on its website as an "intimate castle cloister") dubbed Newstead Abbey based on the estate of David Livingstone, the famous British explorer famous for his African travels. The decor of each room reflects the theme--the larger areas Flushing Manor and HMS Endeavor, in honor of Admiral Sir Edward Pellew and Captain James Cook--have nautical themes, Pemberley has a bunch of pages from Pride and Prejudice on the walls, and Newstead Abbey has animal prints. And of course the general decor of the larger area reflects the theme of the month. You need to make a reservation for tea here, and the business can seat both large and small parties. The price is a little high, in the 40 dollar range, but the food served along with the tea is well worth it! Even my father, who has been reluctant to go to tea all these years, was impressed when we finally convinced him to go. You reserve a spot for two hours. During the two hours, you get three different types of tea, savories, two different kinds of scones with clotted cream and another spread, and desserts served on three tiers. These foods are "named" for characters or plots reflecting this month's theme. For instance, this month's theme was "You've Got a Golden Ticket" based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so the food included Veruca Salt's Pretzel Bun, Violet's Blueberry Pie, and Loompaland's Jungle Salad. Each of these servings is small, but there are quite a bit of them, so most people get full on the combination of savories, scones, and desserts. Each "type" of food (savories, scones, and desserts) comes with it's own teapot of tea. When providing the food, the server will explain with enthusiasm what the menu consists of and how it applies to this month's theme. After finishing the tea/food, the server will provide your check as well as lavender scented hand towels. Gratuity is included in the price, so tipping is not necessary. In addition to the experience of the tea time itself, St. James also has a lovely store filled with different types of china, books, jewelry, and of course, a variety of teas and tea accessories. They also sell tea "passports" that you can use for tea times or to purchase loose leaf tea. After attending or purchasing enough times, and getting your passport stamped every time you do, you'll get a free tea time or a free tea product (based upon what type of passport you bought). Birthdays are also fun because the birthday attendee will get a small sample of tea. They also have seating outside, which was very helpful during the pandemic. Most of the time, during tea, you also have the option of purchasing an extra type of "beverage", such as pumpkin juice during the Wizarding world themed tea time. They do offer options for those who might have dietary issues, such as vegetarian, gluten-free, caffeine-free teas, or double the savories and no sweets. They also offer a carry-out menu. Finally, they also offer special events, which I have yet to attend. If this sounds like something you or your friends/family would like, I would definitely recommend trying it out at least once. It's a beautiful setting and you'll feel like you're having a real old-fashioned tea experience. read more

I have always loved the St. James. Lovely atmosphere, fantastic service and yummy tea. I was delighted to see that they were offering a to go menu. My daughter and I ordered and paid online and picked up curbside. The service was just as great. When we pulled up they had attendants outside. The gathered our info and in minutes had a bag of goodies out to us. Each course was packed separately with warming instructions and the tea had specifics as well. The food was delicious and my new fave tea is Eye of the Tiger. Black tea with a rum/butterscotch flavor. We set up at home, and the bonus was being able to use my mother's china. The St. James Tearoom truly transports you to a different world for a couple hours. I took my daughter & mom here for my daughter's birthday. Unlike The Ivy, St. James Tearoom let's children under 12 attend. Getting dressed up & having a tea party is completely her thing so this was perfect! Their themes changes monthly & this month was Harry Potter themed. All the food, decor, server attire & even music was fit to theme. They even had butter beer available. Their butter beer was actually better than the one at Universal Studios. I'm a big Harry Potter fan so I was loving it. The service was great! Everyone was so friendly & nice. We fell in love with high/afternoon tea ever since London and just had to try the St. James Tearoom. It's such a special place and every twist, turn, nook, and cranny is a sight and experience. From the moment we walked in, we were offered a sample of a chocolate chai tea and it was delicious. While we waited for our table we had ample time to browse the gift shop and tea selection. There is just so much and something for everyone. It's a little like being at the Cracker Barrel store. If you love shopping, definitely be careful with your wallet. Everything is adorable. Great place for gifts. The tea menu at the time we went was La Vie en Rose. I was excited for all the savory items. There was some hits and misses. The beef bourguignon was lukewarm and very alcoholic tasting. The scones were delicious and I could not stop eating the pomegranate rose curd. With all the savories and bread, by the time dessert arrived, we were stuffed and boxed it up to go. The macaron was delicious but the parfait and chocolate were lackluster. For the two hours we were there, we had a nice and relaxing time. I did enjoy the majority of the savories. I liked the variety and the butter and fleur de sel salt they put on those cucumber sandwiches was top shelf. Service was fantastic and their French pronunciation was very impressive. The amount of tea given during the set menu was extremely generous and I felt a bit guilty we could not finish it all or even enjoy it to its full potential. It was just too much. Their special events include things like Princess Teas and Masquerade Balls and you NEED to check them out. But I'm going to review their regular tea service. Let's be clear - regular is not a word to describe it. Each month is a brand-new themed menu. You get three full pots of tea that match three separate stages in the meal. There are breads like scones with the most amazing lemon curd with homemade clotted cream (it's pure heaven). They also have the traditional tea sandwiches, salads, and quiches. Of course there is a dessert course as well! The food is really deceptive. When you sit down and look at it, you will think it isn't much but the combination of the food and the tea will leave you unbuttoning pants for hours! The venue itself is magic. Yes, you can stop in to buy their unique teas and a few scones to go! They also have a gorgeous gift shop with books and beautiful tea sets. Go early to your reservation time to browse. Also ask for seating in the nook if possible for a private table. The library is fabulous but nothing beats the nook! WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! The tea options were great. Our favorite is the garden bouquet tea (i think) out of all the three teas the served. The food too are amazing. Pastries are flaky and tasty. The desserts are all just perfect! There is not one thing we did not like. We were also surprised by how filling the food are. Today, the savories were lukewarm, at best and the second time I never received my third tea. The buildings are like small cottages with cute little signs and greenery everywhere! There are a few water features... And that's just the outside! You're greeted by the staff once you walk in. Not my cup of tea. What can I say? I've heard amazing things about St James, and most of my friends love it. I probably went in with my expectations too high. I've had high tea numerous times in the UK and its colonies, so I gave an idea of what to expect. I did look up the menu, and when I saw it, I wasn't super excited. It was the Alice in Wonderland theme. The spinach artichoke dumpling was good and the meatball pita thing as well. They had a ham sandwich; I don't like ham. The scones only have with lemon curd and clotted cream, but there was no jam! I do appreciate that they had real clotted cream. The desserts were a solid meh. None were anything I'd eat again. Never have I been told what teas I'm going to have. I've always been able to choose. I don't drink caffeine after 10am because I'm very sensitive to it. I had assumed that the tea would be a suggested pairing as wines often are. No. They are the only teas unless they run out, which they did of the one tea I wanted to try on the menu. They were accommodating and gave me the "decaf" version of their tea. Let me tell you, it's NOT decaf. They just reuse old tea leaves, they told me so, and it had enough caffeine for me too require more melatonin than I normally take and a bunch of Benadryl in order to sleep. So, I feel lied to. I even said, I'm on call tomorrow, and I need to sleep tonight. So will I come back? Absolutely not. read more

I am long overdue for writing a review of the St. James Tearoom. Back in September 2021, my husband and I decided to attend an afternoon tea for the first time, when I saw that it was a Harry Potter theme. This experience was nothing short of magical, and everything I could have hoped for and then some. We started going to tea once a month after that, to experience all the different themes. In December we took my brother and sister in law with us, and the holiday decor was unbelievably beautiful. All the food is definitely top notch, even things that I think I won't like or have an element I don't usually enjoy end up being just delicious. The teas are also blended in house and we've found many surprising new favorites! One of our favorite things to do is to go over the whole menu at the end and decide which thing was our favorite from each course. The cream scones are included in the breads course every time for a very good reason: they are splendid! The clotted cream and accompanying curd are always brilliant, whether it's basic lemon curd or something more exotic like February's pomegranate rose curd. There is a wonderful giftshop to browse around in while you're waiting for the bell to be rung for tea, and service is always excellent. Our server Amara last week went above and beyond with her attentiveness and professionalism, and her French pronunciations for the "La Vie en Rose" were lovely. One final note: While we find it to be especially fun to dress up for tea, I have seen lots of people that were wearing their regular clothes to teatime and I feel that nobody would be uncomfortable in this setting either way. Just visited this month of Jan. 2020 for a birthday celebration of a friend. The food and surroundings are tops for tea rooms, and I've visited several. It's so relaxed. And though music is playing, it was very happily at a level that our small group of 3 didn't have to raise our voices at all. The nooks are pretty private for conversation. We had an end room with a divider and a group on the other side. I heard a subtle/quiet talking going on among the rooms, but it was so low that it didn't interfere with our group conversation at all. The tea and food are the highlights set in a beautiful surroundings. Our room had a Beatrix Potter theme. It's an adult room (so don't be thinking nursery), with her book present and a few reminders of the book sitting around including a rabbit sconce! Our waiter was sweet, on point with a fun description of the food and "Downtown Abbey" theme. I'll post some pictures of the meal. For those who have never been, there are 3 tiers of food (savories, breads, and desserts), and 3 pots of tea paired with each! Your taste buds get a treat of textures, color, and most of all flavor. I've been going for years, and this menu was no exception regarding those qualities. Let me say that with 3 pots of tea and the food, I've always walked away quite full (and I'm can put away a lot of food at 5' 7", big boned, etc.). However, if you are bringing someone with a larger appetite than someone like me (like my husband), then maybe have that person eat a sandwich ahead of time (like I had my husband do)! At the end of the meal, don't rush off. There is the best surprise of moist warm towels scented with lavender to dot around the corners of your mouth, clean off sticky fingers, and then sniff to take you away to a spa setting for just a brief moment. On the way out, there is a photo op corner that is decorated for the monthly theme where you take away a wonderful memory! There are many favorite places to go in town, but this is my favorite! It encourages taking time to chat with friends, stopping the clock from a hectic life, and appreciating beauty around you and with you (your family/friends). Highly recommend! If you have a very special someone coming into town, this is an equally special place to take them. read more

Had an absolutely lovely time at the St. James Tearoom. This was my first time at the tea house, and my first time attending the Annual Finer Womanhood Tea, hosted by the Omega Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. The staff was delightful and polite, and was quick to get individuals checked in. They were knowledgeable about the three teas served during our time and checked back frequently to make sure things were going well. I must say my favorite tea we had was the White Wisteria. It had a beautiful aroma and even better flavor. The finger foods were good and I expected it not to be enough, but I was wrong. There was definitely enough food for each person at our table and we even went home with boxes. The atmosphere was calm and refreshing and a beautiful space to hold such an event. Once you have made it through the front door you are greeted with samples of tea and a gift shop with a variety of tea, lotion, jewelry, precious nick knacks for men women and children. When your group is ready to be seated you are escorted to your private rooms. The curtain is drawn for your privacy and the real life experience begins from a variety of teas to enjoy that compliment the sandwiches, bread, and desert. This place is seriously a hidden gem! I would have never imagined such a dainty, lovely, and fun place hidden off of osuna. Parking is easy and when you enter into the courtyard, you're greeted with lush green scenery. Upon entry everyone was so welcoming, and you're led through the hallways as you make your way to your reserved room. This was such a cool experience because you got a sneak peak into other rooms as well (all different and sectioned off). Compared to the previous tearooms I've been to, it was nice to have the privacy because you really do feel like you're having your own private tea party! We had 3 tea options for our meal, with many kinds of sugar to satisfy our sweet tooth. The food options were fun too, we went during "alice in wonderland" and there were so many heart, diamond, spade, clover motifs. Our finger sandwiches were butterfly shaped and everything was just so quaint and cute I couldn't help but freak out with each bite! I also love how they have a rotating theme, so fun and I wished I had started going sooner! They have a passport you can purchase which acts like a stamp card to get rewards too.
