This is a quintessential dive bar. It's got a pool table, jukebox, and no windows. They make some classic cocktails, I opted for an old fashioned which was a good but not great (in all fairness I did just come home from Cole's in LA who probably makes the finest classic cocktails in all of Southern California). The homemade ginger beer was too sweet and left my girlfriend unimpressed with her Moscow Mule. Nice selection of brews including plenty from California which rules. I appreciate the all day happy hour their offer on Mondays. $2.50 wells, $7 cocktails (last time I checked). They make their own ginger beer and utilize premium spirits in their cocktails. The Moscow Mule, Old Fashioned, and the Manhattan are my go to cocktails here. They also have a decent beers on draft. There's always a rotating brew from Beechwood Brewing that's usually delicious and affordable. The atmosphere is chill on weekdays. Weekends can get crowded, so I tend to stick to coming here on during the weekdays. They have one pool table which is usually occupied, but patrons are often friendly when it comes to sharing. This is a cool hip bar. We went on a Sunday and they had karaoke. It had a good crowd for a sunday evening. We were there celebrating a birthday and it was really fun. This alone, along with the quality of said drinks (as explained by my friend; I was DD), is enough to give this place high marks. Very cool spot. Moscow Mules are a specialty and they were quite tasty, though I don't have anything to compare it to since it was my first. Strong drinks though. It's definitely a place for locals, which I am not, but everyone was very friendly. My roommate and I played pool and a small little tournament broke out. I even won my first two games! Surprising since I don't usually play. Bartenders and all the staff are super nice. A few of them were there on their day off to hang out. Seems like everyone is close there. Came here a little while ago with two of my friends just to have a couple drinks. The bartender was a male and he was extremely rude and you can tell he was super drunk already I should have left at this point. It was only 10:30 and we were having drinks when the bartender started shouting get out!!! At first I thought he can't possibly be this rude is he shouting at us?! Well he was because every one there seemed like they were regulars and they were all laughing and he kept shouting get out. I have been a bartender for about 5 years and I would never treat anyone like that! We were just three girls trying out this new bar that is known for their cool drinks and honestly I regret ever stepping foot in this place! Great little "greaser/pin-up" beer only bar. They play good music...a lot of bars in LB lack good music...either that or you have to pay for jukebox service. Anywho, the bartender is uber-friendly and will offer you a variety of board games (Jenga, connect 4...etc.) I believe they also serve pickled eggs. TIP! Beware of this little asian guy (a regular). One night, while traveling through long beach my car broke down. Decided what the hell, the car is broke down may as well have some drinks. Like a mirage in the desert, "The Stache" appeared before me...I knew then that entering that bar was my destiny. The bar is pretty crowded and I am instantly greeted by the bartender. I look around and notice killer pin ups on the red walls....but the real killer was the bartender, she sucked me in with her 'come hither gaze' and sold me on a moscow mule, a muddled mix of house made ginger beer with vodka and mint served in a kick ass copper cup. After my 2nd Moscow Mule I had a "Old Fashion"... again made to perfection! After sitting and talking for a while I find out that this bar very recently got their liquor license, but don't be afraid of that, these bartenders know how to pour a great drink! They play a good variety of music, Brett 'Sweat' prefers to play old standards while bartender 'Nasty' Nate likes his Skynyrd. They have a juke box, pool table, and 3 BIG TV's. Are the bathrooms clean you might ask.... well, I'm not sure I would eat a bean burrito off the toilet... but if worse came to worse, guess I could sit down there. So in conclusion, if you're looking for a kick ass bar near 4th street, "The Stache" is a must!!! If it's not too crowded and you can actually get a chair, this place is great for simple mixed drinks and people watching. The music is a little loud, so conversations may be limited, but you're probably drinking too much to not mind. I love the beer selection in that it's limited, but I always find something new and special to try - whether it be a yummy stout or hoppy IPA on draft. The alcohol is also well displayed so you can see everything they've got. Some bartenders are less creative than others, so you might have to tell them exactly how you want it if it's not traditional - but they're game. The bartenders are great - really friendly and make it fun to hang out at the bar. Leah is a bubbly riot who loves to dance to whatever is playing on the speakers. Any I don't know by name are also all around cool. The clientele is what you would expect from a place called the Stache - hipster central. Also the occasional Pick Up Artist creeper trying to get you to talk to him by stealing your chair when you go to the bathroom or out to smoke, who then stares at the back of your head for 5 minutes trying to will you to turn around and talk to him (but don't worry, the bartenders and bouncers are ready to protect you). In general, the crowd looks young, fun and under-employed, so bring your friends and have a good time drinking, listening to punk rock or whatever is on the jukebox (oldies, Journey, etc.), and playing pool. read more

I'm hesitant to write a review -- this is the kind of place everyone will surely like. And.. If it begins to get too popular.. Well, there goes my secret spot. This place is the perfect bar. It's modern, clean, and has a mixed audience, so you won't feel out of place. They serve a wide variety of beverages, from typical beers, to microbrews, to cocktails. Here's the only down side.. and it's at no fault of anyone's, so I'm sticking to a 5 star rating. The place gets busy on the weekends. And it gets LOUD. And PACKED. But then again, IT'S THE WEEKEND. A few weeks ago a friend and I were looking for a local bar to hang out at on a Monday. After a few Internet searches we stumbled across The Stache and figured we'd give it a try. Much to our surprise when we got there it was "Customer Appreciation Day" every Monday, which meant ALL DAY HAPPY HOUR! Here we go... Not sure if the musical ambience is always the same, but the chill hip hop instrumental music in the background was aesthetically pleasing to my ears. They know their locals and try to take care of all their patrons. If you look overly inebriated, they will make sure they don't serve you anything except for water and snacks. They make a mean, beautifully tasting mule and their bathrooms are very nice, clean and spacious (No, I did not do what you're thinking in there). The downside is parking, but in Long Beach, parking is always hard to come by and the parking enforcement are on the prowl like JAWS. My wife and I had just moved back to Long Beach and checked out this bar after dinner Saturday night. Was thoroughly impressed. We had been in when ownership was changed before but it's previous name escapes me. My wife had a Moscow Mule. Copper mug and all. Proper portions of vodka, lime, & ginger beer. Came in tonight for my birthday, thought we are going to have a great time but NOPE. First of all when we got in the place smells like vomit. Got a seat, bartender didn't even greet and ask what we want. Fine, we sat for 5 mins decided to ask another bartender. I feel so tied in this bar. The drinks are strong, the vibe is good, people are so easy going there but the bartenders.. that's what has me double asking if I wanna go again. I've been 3 times and two out of three were bad experiences from bartenders. Mainly the female tenders, they will make eye contact several times but won't take your drink order, they tend the men lol and I wasn't the only girl trying to get their drinks and the bar tender would look Past them and taking other guys drinks. Several girls were at the front of the bar and would wave in an attempt of getting a drink and the bartender rolled her eyes and would talk badly about them. As far as I know, women pay the same for drinks as the men do so I do not understand the bartenders. I wanna enjoy the bar but I only seem to enjoy it when I take a guy friend to order for me. This Sunday I just left after waiting over 30 mins for a drink and yes, I was sitting at the bar, and still got ignored. read more

Not a rant, more of an explanation of our situation. No hate please, but feel free to message me if you have had similar experiences or your perspective on this one. Went with a group of friends for our mutual friends birthday. She was turning 21 day of. Employee said something about her ID not being valid since she had just turned 21 at midnight. Another friend had his Mexican ID and he is well over 21. Mexican IDs have the date before the month, then the year. Not too confusing, just have to realize there's only 12 months in a year, so "26/04/1991" means they were born on April 26th, 1991 and not that it is a fake ID. He's gone to several bars, clubs, before and has never been rejected. Uses his ID to verify age to purchase alcohol and tobacco. Funny thing is, he told the employee he wasn't drinking since he was sick, was only there to be a part of the celebration. She still made a big deal about it. What is more upsetting is that there was no one checking ID at the door. We all walked in, made ourselves comfortable, and then had this employee check our IDs 10 minutes later. We all ended up leaving because our friend felt uncomfortable about having his ID exaggeratedly examined and not being given a straightforward answer... Instead of it going something more like "ID please" "Here you go" *checks date* *looks at picture* "Great, thanks." she took a good 5-8 minutes just examining the card and then coming up with "Do you have another form of ID" He didn't carry around his passport because his ID is accepted everywhere he has gone. When she saw we were all just going to leave, she said it would be ok this time. She seemed really irritated, like she was expecting for him to leave and everyone else to stay. She probably only said that because the place was empty and we were a big group. Birthday girl was very upset because of HER ID situation. We just wanted to have a few drinks in celebration of our good friend whom followed all laws and waited until that day to have her first legal drink. It's hard for me to comprehend how it is legal in more than 10 states for someone to have sex with a horse, but it is not allowed for an immigrant to have an alcoholic beverage with the only ID they possess as valid proof of legal age. Even when he stated he would not be consuming alcohol. Anyway, so we all ended up leaving, headed to another bar. (They accepted his Mexican ID) So we did not even get to try anything from the stache, but we did get a taste of the customer service and the empty atmosphere. Even if her actions were justifiable, after he showed her his Mexican ID, her tone and attitude changed. She was no longer nice as she was with the first couple of us whose IDs she checked. There was a pool table, and I've heard the drinks are great. Would have liked to have gotten a chance to experience some more positive things. read more

The bar suffers from a silly name and a sketchy looking entrance, but maybe it's intentional. What they're doing inside is just right. I went on an early Saturday evening, just a few people sitting around the bar watching MLS. Great service, well priced drinks, nice and cool inside. Really like this place. First time I went in I was just buzzed enough to fall in love with the seasonal menu and decided to drink my way through it. Wasn't disappointed. Found another page of the menu to sip through on my next visit. If you catch the bartender with the waxed stache unloading his bartender's case it's a trip. He's even got a wooden mallet. They play a mix of music but seem to have good taste so will change it up if you suggest something better than the Mumford and Sons or the like that they sometimes play. read more
