    Avocado toast 3.2345 stars
    Jen C.

Before checking in at our Airbnb, we decided to have lunch first. After exploring Downtown Sonora and discovering it wasn't quite what we hoped for, I was relieved we'd chosen a restaurant farther away. The building itself is lovely, set in the historic Pickering Lumber office built in 1924. Since it was a weekday, the atmosphere was calm and there were plenty of seats available. Everything we tried was delicious. My daughter, who is obsessed with bacon-wrapped dates, spotted them on the specials menu and insisted we order them. Thankfully, they didn't disappoint--the sweet dates were wrapped in perfectly crisp, salty bacon. I wondered if there was an extra ingredient inside the dates, or if their sweetness was all natural--either way, they were outstanding! My man and his daughter split a burger and fries, which they both enjoyed. Planning to share with my own daughter, I asked the server how many toasts came with the avocado toast. She replied, "One." Expecting a small portion, I also ordered a beet salad with goat cheese, tomatoes, and pistachios - so flavorful! When my daughter's avocado toast arrived, it was so large it had to be cut in half. The toast was generously topped with avocado slices and various drizzles, making it look almost extravagant. She couldn't finish it but said it was tasty. I was too full from my salad to sample it myself. Overall, the dishes were great, and the place was nice for lunch. The service was prompt. I have no complaints.

This place was recommend by a shop owner in Twain Harte and since we were on vacation we decided to check it out. It's a pretty cool building that used to be industrial, so it has some real hipster ambiance. However, the service is friendly and the beer is pretty well priced. They let you choose between a pint or 20oz and the prices for their 20oz beers are sometimes less than what other places charge for a pint. We had a few beers, some good conversation, and then went shopping in Sonora. Lovely afternoon and this place helped.

Cali Squeeze IPA, Hazy IPA, New Zealand Sauv Blanc and Napa Chenin Blanc. All yummy!

    Do they take reservations?

I don't think they do, I have tried. Going before and after their peak lunch and dinner hour is key. Hope this helps! :)

    Is it noisy?

Yes, it can be. Unless you are in a smaller room.

However, I Visited on Mother's Day with my daughter and sister and had a completely different experience. I have a gluten allergy, one daughter has gluten sensitivity, and my other daughter has celiac disease. We informed our waitress that we needed gluten-free options and were told they were out of gluten-free buns but had gluten-free sourdough. After double-checking, the chef confirmed it was gluten-free. Something didn't seem right, so we asked to see the packaging. Wheat was listed as an ingredient. Thankfully, we caught the mistake before eating it. Unfortunately, when our food arrived, two of the gluten-free meals were still served with gluten-containing items, including a flour tortilla and the same bread we'd already identified as not gluten-free. The food itself was actually delicious, and I wish I could leave a more positive review based on that alone. However, for anyone with celiac disease, a gluten allergy, or a serious gluten sensitivity, accurate ingredient information is not optional--it's a health and safety issue. The repeated errors from both the kitchen and serving staff were extremely disappointing and left me with little confidence in their ability to safely accommodate gluten-free guests.

During the wait we did not get an update or any notice from the one or two staff members. When the food eventually came out it was still missing things. I've heard of this burger joint chain for over a decade. I first saw it on Triple D back when that…read moreshow had a lot of pull. I think that particular location (the original) was in the Sacramento area, not sure if it is still there. But they have expanded at least 4 newer locations, with one in the Bay Area in Napa, 2 in the Stockton/Lodi area and this one in Sonora which is in the foothills of the Sierras. The others are singular brick n mortars and maybe 1 of them may even have a bar. This one in Sonora is more of an 'express' version that's attached to a gas station minimart. There is good seating like about 5-6 tables inside with another 2-3 tables outside. If you need a restroom, you'll have to walk across the minimart. For a burger joint this place has a serious unique angle. But you have to love cheese in order to appreciate that angle, otherwise you'd be missing out on what makes this place special. When you get a cheeseburger here, they will add a huge mound to that sizzling burger that it will deliberately spill onto that griddle. They will cover it to facilitate the melting and what results is a melty cheeseburger with this awesome 'cheese skirt' attached. I have never seen a burger quite like this, so the novelty was exciting. That cheddar cheese skirt is lacy, gets kinda caramelized and hardens a bit. Kinda like a cheese frico if you've ever had it in a fancy Italian resto. When hot it is semi-liquidy; when warm it is pliable like soft plastic; and when completely cool it will harden like a crisp cracker, but it always tastes of salty intense cheese. Some people eat the skirt first as an appetizer, as it is difficult to eat the actual burger with the skirt intact. Others bend that skirt back into the burger/bun and then proceed to go to town. That is how I did it and imo that is the way to go. Cuz in that, that intense cheese flavor and texture is mingled with the burger and produce, giving each bite a representation of everything. It is truly a ride. I also have to give props to the burger itself as it seriously quality stuff. It is more 'steak-y' than cheap ground beef-y. And that's a good thing cuz the cheese makes it so rich that a cheap fatty burger would make this excessively greasy. The produce and pickles are a must in this equation, cuz like I already pointed out, this is so rich and oily that the fresh produce and the quality tangy pickles complements this burger ride perfectly. I actually wouldn't mind in getting extra pickles next time as it brightens the bites beautifully. The bun was just okay, wished it were toasted more but at least it withstood the juiciness of the ride. It didn't disintegrate or turn to mush, so again giving props. You can pick a burger size 1/4 or 1/3 pound. And you can even pick the size of the cheese skirt in ounces. I did the 1/3lb in the smallest skirt which is about 3 oz of cheese. I found that to be quite filling and perfect juicy bites. I wouldn't change that ratio. Any bigger your jaws will have to do some compromising/extra work. Tried some fries from my traveling mates and I'm glad I didn't get any with my order. It was the coated/textured type and just taste too processed for me. A burger and a soda was around $14ish. Staff was really nice and executed the concept perfectly. They cook to order, so it takes at least 5 minutes for a burger, over 10 if you place an order with multiple burgers. Worth the wait, this was a very memorable and satisfying burger experience. No doubt fiver!

One of the servers came over walked past me and asked them for how many and took them to be seated. Interesting for me seeing as I had been standing there for a few minutes before they entered the restaurant, while servers walked passed me & those near the bar area made eye contact and went back to their duties. Another couple then came into the restaurant and were waiting beside me to be seated, a different server emerged and started walking towards us, she then asked if I had already been helped and got me seated at a table and got menus & drinks while I waited for my friend to arrive. Once she arrived our server got her drink order and checked to see if we need anything while we look over the menu. We noticed they have an updated menu with all the same favorites. My friend ordered the Angel Hair Pasta w/ Italian Sausage with a cup of soup to start, and I ordered the Garlic Roasted Ribeye with Jalapeno Cheddar Mashed Potatoes & Seasonal Veggies with a house salad to start. The food was good not quite as good as I had anticipated. My friends pasta was over sauced, too much sauce for the amount of pasta. My steak had too much demi glaze on it; I did wipe most of it off and I will order it on the side next time. My steak was cooked slightly under what I requested but still good. We were so stuffed that we did not even want to look at the dessert menu. I probably will go back, but I will wait a bit before we return.
