We were traveling to Albany to see some friends whose daughter and son-in-law were in a very bad car accident a few days prior. Just a follow up, they appear to be starting recovery which we are all very very happy about. Ok back to this diner. To start it is just off Interstate 87, A/K/A New York State Thruway. Easy off and easy bank on. It was very early and just a couple of others there. We were seated quickly and our waitress was very pleasant. We both ordered omlettes. Both were fine. Nothing to complain about or rave about. We were going to stop at a bakery n the way there to pick up some pastries for our friends but then Mrs. E noticed that they had a selection of Muffins. So we decide we can save some time by buying a selection here and bringing them. We also got a couple to keep for ourselves for the trip home, which was 4-5 hours. Well it was a good decision because these muffins were delish. I didn't read the reviews and I had no idea that they had been closed for a while but the place was neat and clean, food was acceptable and pastries were exceptional. I stopped in recently as it reopened after a a few years of being closed. I ordered a pretty basic pancake breakfast meal. The service was decent but the food was not. The pancakes were flat, chewy, and tasted weirdly sour. When I went to cut them with the edge of my fork, they didnt budge. I had to saw through them with a knife to cut them. The sausage was mealy and bitter. The over-easy eggs were super runny. It was a really kind of bizarre. There was hardly anyone else in there (it was an off peak time) so I could not chalk it up to being a brekfast rush mistake. If a diner cant do a decent breakfast, its not a great sign. To be honest, I'm not 100% surprised. In the past, the quality was always up and down. There was often a negative vibe amongst the staff when the owner was present. It is extremely difficult finding fast, decent tasteful food being gluten free. This diner has an extremely large selection of gluten free dishes and I have tried several of them and always leave happy. The place is kept clean, the waitresses are friendly and are good with my kids. My son loves whipped cream, the waitress gave him a whole separate bowl of it with his ice cream! This diner is easily accessible and located right across the street from the thruway exit, in the summer that have a nice patio to sit outside. My GF and I decided to stop here on our way back to NYC because this place had an outdoor patio.young We were seated next to a family of ten with kids. The kids were getting restless and we overheard the mother complaining that they had been waiting over a hour. When their food arrived 15 minutes later it was almost all wrong and the waitress was incredibly rude about correcting it. Roughly 15 mins. later I asked a short stocky guy who was helping bus tables if he could check in on our food. The guy said "It'll be here when its ready!" I was trying to be nice and reply that the only reason that I asked is that we could take it to go, he then said "Go find your waitress, we are very busy and you need to wait"." At this point my GF and I both told him never mind please cancel the order. This guy (looking straight out of work release with a inch cheek scar as an accessory) got directly in my face and told me to get the hell out of his restaurant. He then had the balls as we were leaving to demand we pay $3 for the crappy coffee. At this point I told him where I'd like to shove the $3 but my GF gave it to him, looking to diffuse the situation. This place is a disaster. I felt awful for the poor family next to me, and the little thug that got in my face (he opened the cash register so I'm assuming hes at least part owner) is better off going back to serving fellow prisoners at lockup. My dad had the Reuben and said it was delicious. I had the buffalo chicken wrap. I don't recommend getting this. It had fried chicken tenders in it, but there wasn't much buffalo sauce, and what was there was watery and leaked out of the wrap. As a result, the sandwich didn't have much flavor. I liked that you could get curly fries. The waitress was nice, but it took awhile for the food to come out, and we didn't order anything that should've taken more than 10 minutes. Terrible experience!!! Service was not good in the slightest and Food came out cold. Waited an extended period of time for things we asked for napkins, condiments, water, etc. finally got up to get someone to get the things we requested and complained to our waitress about the bad experience. No one came over to amend the situation or offer apologies. When we asked for a few small to go boxes we were told we could pay for them or have aluminum foil for free. Is that a joke??? To go boxes should be built into the high prices....$4.69 for a side of curly fries... that had about 10-12 on the plate? Ridiculous. When we arrived at the diner it was practically empty. The hostess outright refused to sit our party of 6 together. We've stopped here for years because it's convenient when we're in town. The foods always been mediocre but at least consistent and you know what you're getting. But I think we'd be better off with McDonalds out back because at least they know how to use a shake machine. We all sensed a problem when we ordered shakes (that we had there before and loved?) and the waitress put on a face. We all saw it. She wasn't happy. Half an hour later we all sat there thinking we're thirsty? (No food yet either). Then the waitress saw us and said "we're waiting for someone who knows how to use the shake machine because it's blown up all over me twice now. Mind you NO ONE had been to the shake machine since we ordered them. You can't make them if you don't try? And she had been busy waiting on other tables. Another ten minutes pass, and finally she went over and asked someone to make the shakes. Why didn't this happen before? And that woman, who was working like a one armed paper hanger, finally got caught up enough to help out. We didn't notice the machine blowing up on her? After about an hour we got served. Plates were dropped on the table, and no one came back to check to see if the food was ok or someone might like another drink. I guess they were afraid we'd order more shakes! I decided to give this place another try but it still didn't go well. The hostess needs to SMILE and greet the customers. Honestly such a put off, almost made me not want to even sit and eat. And the fact she did that o every customer.... no. She didn't smile once the whole time we were there. My boyfriend got a chicken finger basket for $10.99. Poor service, crappy food. The thing that keeps this place alive is the fact that they are visible to the many hungry travelers just coming off the Thruway. The locals know better and avoid this place. Upon first appearance from the road, this diner looks large and inviting. Once inside, however, things go badly very quickly. Our server was really not into waiting tables, and the very little she said and did made that perfectly clear. The food was horrible. We ordered breakfast, and both of our orders arrived dry and cold. The eggs were runny, while the toast was burnt. And forget about getting an extra cup of coffee! The condition of the food would have prompted another staff to discard it and make the order over again, but not at this place. Their attitude was "if you're hungry from the road, take it or leave it". I felt as if they enjoyed treating customers poorly, since both the wait staff and kitchen staff clearly put so little effort into pleasing patrons. The bums charge you a 5% fee on your bill if you do not use cash. My experience with them is they close when they want so you cannot plan for them to be there. Expensive for a diner. Stopped in yesterday on my way back from the Catskills. We checked out the menus at a few local places and wound up here. I avoid diners in general because the menus are ofter greasy and I try to eat well. I was very surprised when we went in. We were greeted by a friendly hostess, seated immediately, and were quickly attended to by a friendly waitress. She answered all of our questions and there was no hassle at all. Place was clean and comfortable. What blew me away was the food. I am from NYC and eat out a lot, both locally and during business travel. I ordered the salmon (the special was blackened but they made it grilled with no hassle), mashed potatoes and sauteed veggies. Came with a salad and a roll. Salad was standard iceberg. Vinaigrette dressing was very good. Sourdough roll was also very good. The real surprise was the main plate. The salmon was excellent. Grilled to medium perfection. Still moist inside. Together with the good mashed potatoes and properly cooked asparagus, it was a great meal. Most restaurants kill salmon by overcooking it. This was great. Quality and taste as good as any other I have had. My girlfriend had the cup over chili, which was served over rice, and was very happy. Bathrooms were quite clean. No ick factor. Mints are great. Negatives: Waitress became inattentive when she was given a table of 12. Minor inconvenience from my perspective. When the waitress saw that my plate came with asparagus, she immediately got me the sauteed vegetables. These were overcooked, but flavorful. No baked potatoes until after 4:30. Weird. read more

I have been a patron of The Starway Diner for as long as I remember; 15 years plus. My partner knows the owner John. Years ago I really enjoyed this place, portions and selections. Unfortunately, I have watched it go wY down hill. My last visit was Monday 12/29 but I have two other memorable visits that I should share. The diner is in a perfect location for success , it is located directly off exit 20 Saugerties and also in front Of CVS Plaza just to name a few. A few months ago I was traveling back from New Jersey,I was feeling very hungry and tired so stopped for a bite and coffee.. please coffee. The diner closes at 10:00 pm every evening and I believe 11:00 on weekends. We arrived at 8:30 and ordered a full meal, there were two of us. When we finished our meal it was 9:15 .. mind you the owner was present which is usually the case. We ordered our long awaited coffee and was told by the waitress that they had finished their last pot and because of the time, 9:15, the owner would not let them make a new pot!! I was blown away by this. Last month, against my better judgement, we went back for dinner. My partner and I both got open roast beef sandwiches. This was our go to meal for years. The roast beef was so dry I would compare it to sawdust, the canned vegetables were mushy, the mashed potatoes were fine. With out soda and one glass of wine, our bill was approx 50.00. The waitress service is always good. Horrible meal Last night, we went for dinner, figured we would give them one last try. I ordered the filet mignon medium rare. My favorite steak for sure. When it arrived it not what anyone could possibly call fillet mignon, the most tender cut of beef. It was over cooked to a medium/ medium well and so rubbery you couldn't cut it with ease using a steak knife! I did not ear one bite if it! This time, we did call John, the owner over. He came over showing little concern. He asked what would you like instead. At this point my partner was finished eating so there was nothing else I wanted. He said that I either had to pick something else or he couldn't help me. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS.. The service was good and the food so so. I had an omelet with sausage. When the price was higher than what I saw on the menu with the omelettes they explained I got 2 sausage not 1. I asked how would I know there were 2 sizes and they said they it hasn't been an issue because everyone knows to order 1 or 2. So many things wrong with this place. We stopped on the road to get lunch. Right near highway. Giant diner, almost empty. That should have said something. My son ordered from the kids menu, Mac and cheese. I ordered soup and 1/2 sandwich. My husband ordered chicken cordon blue sandwich. Soup was definitely canned. Tasted like metal. 1/2 sandwich was teeny tiny. chicken was insanely dry, had a piece of cheese and ham slapped on it. Cold. Yuck. When my sons mac & cheese came out, i couldn't believe what i saw. It was a plate of instant powdered mac and cheese with a loaf or bread on the side. (this was $6 btw) I called the waitress over and said-- this looks like powdered mac and cheese! She said very rudely, what? Its regular kraft mac and cheese-- the kind you give to kids! I said to her- My son doesn't like it, can you please take it back and bring a hot dog? He humphed and took it back, brought back a hot dog. While paying to leave, the manager asked how it was. I told him I could not believe that he would serve kraft fake mac and cheese to his customers. He turned red in the face, started scolding and raising his voice how that's what kids eat and he doesn't serve that to grownups. I said oh really? First off, this is a diner so if you're expecting a gourmet meal go elsewhere. With that said, this is an oasis for someone with Celiac. Almost the entire menu can be made gluten free which is a rarity in an otherwise diatery unconscious wasteland of the twin counties. Unbelievably happy that I discovered this place and love that when you order a gluten free item you don't get an eye roll from the waiter. Got there about 15-20 mins later, waited for another 35 minutes still no order. 45-50 minutes after ordering I told the hostess who took my order to cancel my order and walked out without any food. Honestly the most disturbing experience I've ever had at a restaurant. I was upstate for a mini vacation and came across this diner. The place was kind of empty, every staff worker there looks miserable and the food was mediocre. My spinach artichoke dip was cold and soupy- actually inedible the second it came out. The main issue was the hostess or whatever she is at the front desk. I was stretching my leg and had my side of my shoe momentarily on the booth bench that I was in. She storms pass me while walking and says "get your foot off of MY bench thanks" without giving me a second to respond. My friend and I were shocked and could not believe how rude she was, there's other ways to go about that. Seriously just a childish and unprofessional woman. Meanwhile right behind me was a child and 2 parents letting their kid climbs all over the seats with his shoes for over an hour. Our waitress seemed mortified when I told her what happened and she apparently went to talk to the hostess. I was so turned off I ate none of my food and just wanted to leave.
