Richard with the Substation has been a long term client of ours. We have provided the bread for him for many years. Throughout the years he has always taken care of us as a vendor and been so kind and caring. When my grandmother passed away, Richard donated two three foot subs, two sandwich trays, and a veggie tray in honor of her memory. Him and his crew made the sandwiches early in the morning and he personally drove from riverside to Yorba Linda to attend services and ensure the sandwiches arrived on time. Through this tough time he gave a great deal of compassion and empathy which is greatly appreciated. Not only is he a wonderful person but he truly makes outstanding sandwiches. Sub Station is pretty good, right across from the UCR campus. Kinda on the expensive side compared to other sandwich shops, but it's a nice change from Subway. Sandwiches are good, but the vegetarian options suck hardcore. Just because there's no meat on the sandwich doesn't mean it should be lame. I got the avocado and cheese sandwich hot, which I was excited to try. Definitely sucked because the Italian dressing soaked my bread, the avocado and toppings were mushy so the entire sandwich just was "one note" as my roomie put it. At least at Subway I can put on as much veggies as I want. I had to buy a bag of chips to stick in my sandwich to finish eating it. So. If you're a meat eater, definitely give this place a shot and you'll probably love it(minus the price). But if you're vegetarian or vegan, definitely skip this and go to Subway where you can get it toasted if you want as well as have loads of veggies to make an exciting sandwich. read more

I have never been greeted with such friendly customer service in my life! The owner, Rich, gave me and my friends a thorough tour explaining the history of the restaurant and the meaning behind all the pictures hanging on the walls. The sandwiches were amazing as well! The one that particularly stood out to me was the Rich Wich. This vegetarian sandwich was named after the owner who is vegetarian. The marinated cucumbers with the avocado works in perfect unison. Although there is no meat in the sandwich, the flavors and ingredients complement each other so well that meat is not needed to enhance the sandwich. The sandwiches are very reasonably priced for the quantity. Overall, I definitely recommend this place especially for UCR students because it is in such close proximity! read more

I always try to make a stop here whenever I'm in the area. I always go for "The Big Dude," which has ham and the Italian meats, cheese, lettuce, and their special vinegar dressing which is what gets me coming back on a French roll. It comes 7 or 12 in with carrot sticks and peppercini. I usually order the 12 in which will feed 2. I can't speak for the other sandwiches they have but they have an extensive menu with cold and hot sandwiches, soups, and other items like potato salad. Always friendly and clean. I have NO FREAKING CLUE how I haven't written a review for this place sooner. I mean, really, this place is amazing. I keep telling my wife I'm going to take her here, but have yet to, since they're not near our home. Their "rainy day/sunny day/daily" special (the turkey & cheese w/ chips & a drink) is legit. Just the perfect size, and man-oh-man does it deliver. Have I had other things here? Sure. But it's just so freaking good. Their combo of toppings is on point, and just has a flavor that isn't matched anywhere else. Their service is good, and everyone is always friendly. The only issue can be that it gets packed sometimes, but even then, it's never too long of a wait. Also, just know, their potato and macaroni salads are also really good. So while chips are a side option, opt for one of those salads if you're looking for something different - you won't regret it. Lastly, if I was to ask them anything (a request, really), it would be to bring back Duke's mayo! I'm sure it was a cost-cutting measure, given the current business climate in CA, but Duke's is legit! AT LEAST as good as Best Foods (which they also don't use there), if not better. This is our go-to sandwich place in Riverside. I always order the 7" turkey, no cheese, plus avocado. The husband and son always orders the Big Dude. The sandwiches are always very good. My only complaint would be that they are not too consistent with the amount of vinegar and oil they put on the sandwiches. I've gotten my sandwich drenched and I've gotten it at times barely wet. Oh, the owner seems nice. On our first visit, he gave us free drinks out of the blue. This is the best place to get lunch by UCR. Beware of the lunch rush. Make sure you bring some quarters if you want a refill. Make sure you bring some dollar bills to tip the students. AC works FABULOUSLY inside. Prices are great for everything I got a RichWich last time... and the 30 times before that because nothing beats toasted wheat, marinated cucumber, avocado, and gooey melted Swiss. Same mistake both times - ordered the toasted cheese & avo plus cucumber, got the cheese and cucumber only. Every once in a while I get a strong craving for a classic Italian Sub stuffed with savory meats and cheeses and soaked in tangy vinaigrette. When I get that craving, I'm most likely making a stop at Sub Station for lunch. Sub Station is a nearby campus standard at UCR and has been around for decades. My go to when I get the cravings is a large "The Big Dude" sandwich. I usually try to call my order in ahead to beat the lunchtime rush wait and take my sub to go and eat it at work or home. Some cons that I've seen mentioned are the price. I'd agree that the sandwiches cost a pretty penny, but I think you pretty much get what you pay for here. The sandwich is huge and stuffed adequately with meats and cheese, with a good ratio to the veggies. The bread is soft and chewy, which I love. Usually this is a 5 star spot, but they have a rude employee taking to go orders. I ordered 3 subs on the phone Sat, 4/24.. I asked her to repeat my to go order because previously she thought I ordered a turkey sandwich. She sighed to let me know I am wasting her time. When I thanked her, she hung up on me. She never took my name or told me an ETA for my order. When I got there, the other girl at the register couldn't find my order- no name. The sub station offers a variety of delicious hot and cold subs with many different meats and styles to choose from . The only negative thing I have to say about this place is the amount of pepper they put on the subs ! It's sooo much its too much for me and it takes away from the taste. The heard the owner tells the staff they HAVE to go back and fourth when adding the pepper to the subs ! I had to tell the staff to HOLD THE PEPPER ! I absolutely love this place....it's super packed during lunch time on the weekdays cuz of the UCR students. During lunch the lines can be up to the door and outside in the heat but theres a line for a reason!!! It's way worth it to come here cuz it has that authentic sub sandwich taste... Consistently good! I have been going here over the last thirty years and it is ALWAYS good. My go to subs are the roast beef and cheese (you can get it hot or cold) and the melted cheese and avocado. I love the way they shred the lettuce really fine and it soaks up the delicious oil and vinegar dressing they put on the sandwiches. For the he melted cheese and avocado, they get a golden brown deliciousness on the melted cheese that is so good. Since this sandwich goes in the oven it takes a little longer, but it's worth the wait it's also a bit messy, but again, worth it. I always enjoy the carrot sticks and peppers they serve with the sandwiches as well, but sensitive palates be warned, the peppers are "the spicy ones". Call ahead to avoid lines and wait times. Nice spot on the UCR campus, looked clean, however when your dealing with hand to mouth food products all that are dealing with the sandwiches should be wearing gloves. I know they may feel that they're clean but two to three different changes of hands on one sandwich is really unsanitary in my eyes. I had very high hopes but once I arrived home (45 minutes away) both sandwiches had completely incorrect ingredients. I used to eat here during all my years of graduate school at UCR. It utterly and completely spoiled me for any other sub sandwich place. I literally have not eaten at Subway since - I can't. It's like comparing Boston deep-dish pizza with a Lean Cuisine frozen 300-calorie microwave pizza. Really. My best buddy and I like Sub Station so much, we decided to eat there every day at lunch and go down the list of sandwiches from top to bottom until we had tried them all. With the exception of the straight balogna sandwich (neither of us are fans of bologna), they were all excellent (usually better toasted, too!). The Big Dude and the following handful of sandwiches remain my favorites, as well as the turkey and swiss. Holy cow! They put just the right seasoning on those sandwiches and I swear I've never tasted anything as fresh again! I've tried Quiznos but it doesn't hold up. The closest I've come is Jersey Mike's and even they're only a pale shadow of a comparison. You just can't beat the Sub Station. The staff is always friendly and the owner, Rich, is a hell of a nice guy. Chat him up and he'll always remember you - he even gave me free drinks or a discount once in a great while (it IS a business, people. But he is extremely nice). He pays a good wage and always has big parties each year with his student workers... he is well-known as a good employer to the University students and lots of them work there or want to work there. Support your Mom and Pop stores, people! The food is great, the people are nice, the prices are fair, and you're helping a small business and a bunch of college students. Let me preface this by saying; this is (was) my favorite place to eat in riverside. Sandwiches are great. Pricey, no doubt, but the best place for a sub in the inland empire. Today I went in as I usually do every week to order my Sub. They were busy so a reasonable wait time was expected. I ordered a COLD, small ham and cheese. Nothing special--pretty basic. Everyone that ordered before me started getting their food, then everyone after me. After the 11th person, I decided to ask about my order. Instead if saying I've been waiting for a simple sub for 30 minutes, and everyone that came before and after me has gotten their food--I gave him the name of someone we both know as a reference. He (THE OWNER) said he was too busy to check, and that it didn't matter if someone got their food and I didn't that's not how that works. Mind you he was essentially raising his voice at me in front of his student workers and customers. Real profesh! I just don't understand why he feels the need to be a complete jerk.
