The Sun Shoppe Café, Historic Downtown Melbourne, 540 East New Haven Avenue, Melbourne, Florida 32901- 3-Stars If you are looking for the big city hipster experience in Brevard, you can get it in Downtown Melbourne at the Sun Shoppe Café. This small coffee shop has been home to local glitterati for decades. While ownership has changed, the vibe hasn't. The current owners are Asian, and this joint now hums like a perfectly tuned engine. While the slacker mentality is exuded by the customers, it is not by the staff. Ash works the counter. She may look the hipster part, but her performance is exhilarating. Sadly, the food is no great shakes. Everything is average, like so much I have encountered and written about on the Space Coast. I dislike battology, but must mournfully write yet again about ho-hum fare served at another Brevard County dining establishment. Nothing spectacular. Nothing special. Average ingredients. Average prep. The Spicy Tuna Melt was flat and tasteless--nothing spectacular--using low-grade tuna fish. The Double Espresso was fine--nothing special--made with a cheaper bean. Even the Mango Berry Smoothie--average ingredients, average prep--lacked punch. The Big Boy says, "If you want a cool vibe, this is a great place to meet up. Hopefully your conversation will be so engaging that you won't notice your mediocre food and drink."

SO CUTE. The Sun Shoppe was my bf's childhood study nook-- it's just the most adorable neighborhood cafe in downtown Melbourne. Cozy, quiet, and POC-owned :-) Few COVID safety measures in place-- some staff wear masks, surfaces are sanitized, but that's about it. With the spacious seating, it's pretty easy to socially distance on your own. Parking is most viable in the sprawling side streets. Service is super quick + kind. CALIFORNIA ROLL: Ok, I honestly got this out of curiosity what their interpretation of "California" fare was-- and they're not wrong. Crisp greens + avo + deli meat + veggie wrap? This is...... Accurate. Sans chips/jalapeños, this is LA juice bar food (without the price!), and I'm not even mad. CHAI: Hype is real. I don't like cinnamon, and I liked this. It's no wonder half the reviews here rave about it-- creamy and silky, balanced with a spicy kick! I'm a fan. We saw plenty of students and remote workers here, along with older folks looking for a quiet respite for reading. I could definitely see myself stopping in on the regular!

I love the Sun Shoppe Cafe! Everyone is so friendly and the fruit salad is my favorite!

For those who live in Melbourne, FL, there is one "it" coffee shop when it comes to the Historic Downtown Melbourne area, and that is The Sun Shoppe Cafe. Located west of the "core" of the area, it has become a to-go spot for many people, especially the younger crowd. To this day, it is still the place to go to relax, have a nice conversation with a cup of coffee. As mentioned above, The Sun Shoppe Cafe (which will be shorthand to Sun Shoppe for the rest of the review) is located just west of the main Historic Downtown Melbourne area, right next to The Escape Room (old building that used to be Vinyl Request Records). It is a decent-sized corner coffee shop that can seat about double the number of guests a typical Starbucks can hold. Upon entering, you'll notice the decor is set for a beach mood. It works despite being dated. You'll also notice they serve bakery goods, coffee, and pastries. I have eaten many of their bakery goods and would suggest the hummus and pita bread as well as their lox bagel. I also like the PB & bananas bagels too. As for coffee, coffee is coffee and you can't really screw it up unless you try. I personally like their cold drinks especially their iced chai drink and their smoothies. The only gripe I have with this place is at times, it can be really crowded. I know that's good for Sun Shoppe as a packed building means business is good, but I know nobody likes waiting around just for coffee and coffee shop baked goods. Besides that, it is a great place and one of the few local coffee shops from back in the day that is still around.

We absolutely love this place and have been coming here for years. Their prices are very reasonable and the service is always the best. They are a local cafe that serves breakfast type items; bagels, muffins, etc. Sandwiches, salads, coffees, smoothies, etc. My only negative is they only have almond milk as a non-dairy option. If I could have my way I would request oat milk, but that is not a big deal and I will continue to visit here regularly.

Okay, let's be honest.. is the Sun Shoppe actually "Good™" Or is it just lovable because of nostalgia? The answer is unknowable!! The coffee is certainly not the best in town, but if you're a Melbourne local, you've more than likely remember spent a few hours here doing home work or work-work, can remember back when they used to have open mike nights (not sorry those days are over!), know the smell (like a coffee/baked goods smell) that will be on your clothes when you leave, etc. The Sun Shoppe is the place we all come back to when we want to sit with an old friend. So yes, I think that makes it good. It's a family owned place, the family is so sweet and somehow so good at remembering their patrons! The staff is always so nice and helpful, I've asked advice on what to order on more than one occasion and they always help talk me into a slice of cake. One of my favorite things to get here is their Super Nova Lox on an Everything Bagel and Iced Chai. Even just thinking of it right now I'm like "Oh yeah, I'm definitely getting that for brunch this weekend.." In conclusion.. I guess this place is pretty good. P.S. I would like to commend them for getting new tables and chairs after having the same ones for over a decade!! Again, I get this place runs off nostalgia but new furniture and decor is a great move

    Styrofoam? Really, do better!

**INITIAL REVIEW**…read more For me, Historic Downtown Melbourne has become one of my most-visited hubs for socialization, especially in south Brevard County. Thanks to the brilliant people at DTMB or Melbourne Main Street, the area has been improving. I definitely like the new businesses coming in, taking a slice of history in their own sake. Once such place is Villon Coffee. Originally, a "food truck" as the are more of a coffee truck, Villon Coffee (which I will shorthand simply to Villon for the remainder of the review) has expanded to the point they now have two brick-and-mortal locations. The one I like to frequent is, of course, Historic Downtown Melbourne. Now to be fair, they are an a-okay coffee shop, but mostly because of how management runs it more so than the vibe and staff. The vibe and staff: excellent! Definitely have a lot of good things to say about Ally. However, how management (whom I never seen onsite whatsoever) runs the location, is no bueno! Though an address is given, Villon is located on the southside of New Haven Ave. that runs though Historic Downtown Melbourne. If it helps, they are more on the eastside of the town stretch just west of the train tracks. Villon is a smallish location consisting of a main serving room and a "waiting" room that showcases their wares for sale. The waiting room also has an island table and couch, which works well as board games (though most of them are incomplete) are available for guests. The pinball machine, Godzilla, requires 50 cents to play. The main serving floor has bar seating along the storefront window, serving counter, and the side window. As for decor, a lot of yellow, black, and greys in modern art triangles and flowers that highlight their color scheme. Also, the restroom is gender neutral, which is fine as it is a single-person restroom. Usually clean and stocked, but not the best looking restroom. Ever seen a grungy warehouse look in a restroom but was still clean? That's what Villon here has. This is where things are critical. For some reason, management usually has only one person on staff. Now to be fair, most of the day only needs one person, but during rushes, you'll end up waiting. This is not a food truck which is understandable why there is a wait, but an actual brick-and-mortar restaurant. And given its small size and menu, you'd think they would be able to keep rotation on goods up to par. There have been times I came in in which Ally has said they don't have something or another. This goes for their food which I am unsure is either premade or storebought. Needless to say, they don't have the space to cook anything from scratch, so everything is "heat and ready to serve." There is a couple of coolers with bagels, and oatmeal bites ready to eat, though. But the food that really stands out is the wares made by Chef & Summers. They are delicious, but sometimes, they can be sold out. Villon is also quite innovative in their drinks, more so than any other coffee shop I can think of locally. Ergo, they get the hit-or-miss judgment a tad bit more, but because they are being bold more so than being either good or bad. Overall, Villon, as mentioned earlier, is an a-okay place. The staff does the best they can with what they have and what they are given. But I guarantee you they'd be better with more management support. Since I have visited this place numerous times prior to my initial review, I can definitely give Villon a solid three out of five stars with the aforementioned points above. If management helps improve this location, then maybe, just maybe, I will give them a fair shake and update my review. Until then, good place to stop by if you are in the area and you just need a stop to go to, but definitely better coffee shop options out there. My suggestion: The Sun Shoppe at the west end of Historic Downtown Melbourne or Apocalpyse Coffee Roasters heading north on Babcock St. right at the intersection with US-1.

I know I know matcha tastes like you slid into outfield and ate grass but hear me out. It actually isn't so bad I topped it with vanilla foam and although it made it less healthier it's way better than a wheat grass shot! Pricing is reasonable and they have these muffins that was pretty much the same price as my drink but they are big enough to share. Service was quick and the staff friendly. Since you didn't get your Starbucks bear cup protest by going here instead: you won't be disappointed! J/k Oh, I forgot to mention my friend grabbed this cute shirt for me because I packed all long sleeves for my trip and it was hot. Leave it to me to pack for a cold freeze and then fly home the day before it happened! Anyways, if you're in the area or just passing through make a stop here.
