An incredible restaurant! Old school flavor, feel, and ambiance and a great location in Duxbury too. Traditional ingredients which are prepared with great care. Scallops are a must try, but the best is the chicken. Old school. Great prices, wonderful staff, very comfortable setting, clean, letting parking, and the prices are spot on. A treat. Had dinner with a friend at this new-to-me place. The menu has many varied options and there was a separate specials menu, including a couple of featured cocktails. I enjoyed their Two Truths and a Rye while my friend had an espresso martini. I settled on a cup of sweet potato soup (delish!) and the meatloaf. The smoked bacon jam atop the moist and tender meat slices (packed with garlic) were amazing! The roasted veggies and mashed potatoes made this a very filling entree. My friend had the chopped salad with sirloin tip side. She loved the salad but we both felt the tips portion was very skimpy. We finished off the meal with the limoncello mascarpone cake. Our server, Rachel, was exceptional--friendly, anticipatory, always filling water glasses and checking back. The dining room is part of a Colonial home that has a charming vibe. after an all-day event in the area, i was starving and looking for a different place than my usual. i stumbled upon the sun tavern online, and decided to give it a try. the sun tavern is a very cute, cape style house with a tavern on one side of the building, and 2 rooms that are more formal. our server, tara, was great. tara, melissa, and our host danielle, shared the detailed story behind the restaurant which was really intriguing! we started with the burrata which was good. for my meal, i ordered the chicken with sautéed spinach (plus garlic) and added some extra seasonal veggies, which they put in the dish and it was delicious! i finished my meal and i never usually do. my friend ordered their sweet chili bbq steak tips, it was great but we both thought they would be better without the sweet chili bbq sauce. i loved the wine special, which was the 2022 lion tamer cabernet sauvignon, delicious! for dessert, they had my favorite, limoncello mascarpone cake, and it was the perfect ending to a satisfying meal. 2022 lion tamer cabernet sauvignon 10/10 homemade bread 10/10 burrata 8/10 chicken 9.5/10 sautéed spinach 9.5/10 steak tips 7.8/10 limoncello mascarpone cake 10/10 i really enjoyed our meals here, and would recommend the sun tavern if you're in the area. ambiance: 4.8/5 food: 4.4/5 drinks: 5/5 service: 5/5 the sun tavern: 4.8/5 read more

Service was not good. Server seemed to want to get away from table as quickly as possible each time she was there; empty cocktails were not asked to be refilled. Food was alright. A friend's food was served with the order ticket under the fish. This place is not what it used to be. read more

We had a 5:15 p.m. reservation for six and were told the table was limited to two hours -- fair enough, if the restaurant could manage that time responsibly. It didn't. Four of us arrived at 5:05, the rest by 5:15. We ordered cocktails immediately, but they took quite a while to arrive. One was slightly spilled on the table with no apology or offer to replace what was lost -- just an "oh well" attitude. To be fair, our server encouraged us to order food right away, but we wanted a few minutes to read the menu and enjoy our drinks. We placed our dinner orders soon after -- and then waited so long for our meals that, at one point, I actually forgot whether we had already ordered or not. By the time entrées finally arrived, a large portion of our two-hour limit had already been spent waiting. The food itself was fine, but service remained inattentive. One couple ordered a bottle of wine; I had planned to order a glass of wine to go with dinner, but the server never returned. By the time she finally reappeared, I had given up on the wine and ordered a dessert martini instead. Her response: "I just got the reminder that you have to leave the table at 7:15." It was 6:50. She never asked if we wanted dessert; when we did, she looked irritated and again reminded us about the time limit. We ordered anyway. Dessert came quickly, but before we were finished, staff began clearing plates and glasses around us. The check then took a long time to arrive and even longer to be picked up. At exactly 7:26, the hostess came over and said, "You can go to the bar if you want, but people have been waiting for your table for fifteen minutes." She hastily set the bills down -- almost slammed them -- leaving us unsure if we were supposed to move or pay there. We paid and left. And not for nothing -- the math doesn't add up. If our seating was from 5:15-7:15 and we left around 7:30, how could another party have already been waiting fifteen minutes? Did they really plan back-to-back seatings with no buffer at all? Much of our "two-hour limit" was spent waiting for drinks, food, and the check -- hardly our fault. For a place that markets itself as fine dining, it's disappointing that there was no opportunity to actually enjoy the experience -- no leisurely cocktail, no relaxed pacing through appetizers, dinner, dessert, and an after-dinner drink. Fine dining is about hospitality and rhythm, not countdown clocks. No buffer, no grace, just poor management. We won't be returning. read more

have loved The Sun Tavern in Duxbury for over 30 years. The colonial charm, excellent food, and warm hospitality always made it a special place. Sadly, my recent visit was a major disappointment. The oysters were fresh, but the mussels were overcooked, with several unopened and inedible. Service was careless at best. A simple request for an extra piece of toast with our mussels was refused because "the chef was too busy." Later, the bartender offered plain bread she had already forgotten to bring. The wine service was worse. My sister asked to taste a Malbec and was given a one ounce pour in a tiny aperitif glass instead of a proper wine glass. When we questioned it, the manager was curt and dismissive, telling me to lower my voice and insisting "you asked for a taste, and that is what you got." The owner eventually came out and repeated, "I'll make it right," but never explained how. We decided to leave and dined elsewhere, where the hospitality was far better. Later, I noticed their website only shows reviews from 2014 to 2016, back when the previous owner was in charge. That explains a lot. The Sun Tavern once set the standard, but it no longer values its guests. Between the poor food, rude service, and lack of hospitality, it is not worth the price. The Sun has old tavern charm with a glowing fireplace. The food has improved greatly over the years and I highly recommend the filet and the lamb dishes. My husband and I are in our very late seventies and have issues with our backs, that said, we find the chairs and bar stools uncomfortable. That is my only issue but otherwise it's worth trying again, if you hav'nt been there in recent years or at all. It is quite popular so to be sure you can get a table they take reservations. read more

4 of us enjoyed dinner on a Wednesday evening at 5:30, shortly after they opened. It was a wonderful experience. By the time we left, just after 7pm, it looked like all the tables were taken so I'd recommend calling to get a reservation. FOOD: Excellent! Caesar salad had fresh lettuce and tasty dressing. The salmon was flaky, beautifully presented and generous portion. The lamb shank was flavorful and perfectly prepared. SERVICE: Kasey was fantastic. She was knowledgeable of the menu, pleasant and friendly. Our waters and drinks were refreshed and she was attentive throughout the meal. We split the salad, and it came out in 2 split plates, no up charge, classy. BAR: Cosmo was made well, and I appreciate there are no garnishments which tend to get in the way. Simply made, not too sweet, filled to the top. $11, reasonably priced. The house Chardonnay, Oxford, was $8, and a typical pour. Montepulciano is $13 a glass. ATMOSPHERE: Super warm Lighting, many rooms so you feel like your area is semi private. Every employee we encountered was friendly and it seemed like the team works well together. The sound level was minimal, so it is easy to have conversations without shouting. Fun side note: Apparently the ghost of the previous owner, Lysander, frequents the Tavern. As accessing the web site through certain browsers results in a security warning, I posted the menus in the photos so you can get an idea of the offerings. Went to the bar pre dinner and had a couple of delicious cocktails that were recommended by the bar tender. We had the duck and the short rib for dinner. Duck was overcooked and lacked flavor, the potato cake with it was burnt and inedible. Short rib was also overcooked and rubbery. Great atmosphere and staff were very friendly. read more

We love the Sun Tavern!! It's not cheap, but exquisite dishes every time. The menu changes seasonally, they use their own garden, and there's something for everyone! Steak, scallops, other seafood, burgers, delicious apps, and heavenly desserts!! Great wines and dynamite cocktails. Real food, where people who want to avoid additives or things like wheat can order nearly anything on the menu. Historic old house in Duxbury, with several different rooms/themes to fit your needs. Super cool bar area, great for meeting friends for a drink and dinner, kids are fine there too. Small dining room right in front of the kitchen action, very cool and it feels exclusive. Suffice to say I have been disappointed in my experiences at the Sun tavern on 3 consecutive visits. This review describes the most recent. The ambiance was a little cramped and noisy. Lighting was good. Without belaboring the details, the portion sizes of the entrees were average, but the accompaniment portions were tiny. In addition, we expressed what we thought were legit (not nitpicking, we are not complainers) concerns about our dinner. There was AMPLE opportunity to make it right, with very little effort! The response was embarrassingly argumentative and dismissive. Bad. Need I say more? Bottom line: I cannot with a clear conscience recommend spending your hard earned money at this restaurant. In fact, don't bother. There are plenty of quality restaurants in the vicinity which will give you a better value, a more accommodating and satisfying experience/meal at a reasonable cost. We've spent a significant amount of money at the Sun tavern, but honestly the past 3 times we felt quite disappointed and dissatisfied at the end of the evening. This last time unfortunately was the final straw. I'll leave it there, but we and our friends (about 10), henceforth will take our business elsewhere. Thank you. read more

This place consistently has good food. Most recently we ordered the poutine and summer ravioli appetizers and they were both excellent. The service is good but it seemed like there were trying to rush us out. Said we wanted a few minutes to look at the menu after the appetizer came and didn't get all that long. They open at 5pm and you need a reservation. They are pretty much always booked. We got a 5pm reservation and they literally do not open the door until 5pm. Not 4:59, 5pm. So basically everyone with a 5pm reservation was waiting in line at the door to get seated. Seems like they could make this process more efficient since they were rushing us out. read more

There is not much I can say about the SunTavern anymore. The restaurant is awesome the staff is great and the food is the best. We have lived in Duxbury for 28 years lots of food options but I always look forward to having dinner here. My son and I dine here periodically. He enjoys it and we both enjoy the historic venue. However, I'm a vegetarian and struggle to find something filling and appealing on the menu. The black bean burger, which I've tried a couple times, is soggy in the middle. The side of mashed potatoes I ordered tonight was not hot and smaller than I recall. The coffee wasn't steaming hot either. The salad portion was very small. The seasonal menu is the same, it seems, year round with the exception of a few new items here and there. Service was good. We come here frequently. It is close to home and if we stick to our known , regular dishes, the food is 70% reliable. Sadly, there is little consistency. We always order a Caesar salad. It is different every time. We suspect that the salads may be partially prepared by a chef and finished by the waitstaff. Some days it is slathered with dressing, missing the anchovies, covered with chewy, hardened, pre shredded parmigiana. Other days, the dressing is light and fresh, the parmigiana just grated or toasted into a crunchy cake. It's the luck of the draw. Tonight, it was so bad, we left it. I ordered the creamed spinach tonight. Usually the vegetables here are good. I was given a bowl of cream sauce with barely a tablespoon of spinach somewhere in the bottom. I complained to the waitress, but she thought I was complaining about the size of the dish. She explained that it was just meant to be a side. I told her that I wanted a side of spinach, not a side of cream sauce. She told me that spinach shrinks, when it is cooked. One would expect the chef to know this, right? I can't fault the waitress here. She was trying. We will, of course, return to this restaurant. The waitstaff is good, the drinks are excellent and the filet over a blue cheese potato mash is excellent 8 times out of 10. Same with the sea scallops, usually good. It's not a cheap night out, but the ambience and service make it worth the splurge. read more

Bland and boring. A few weeks ago my husband and I arrived for an early dinner just as they were opening. We were seated "across from the grille". I guess being seated across from a non-descript ell in the kitchen in a really ugly room is "the grille". Not sure why since they had just opened and the place was practically empty. The table wobbled thru the entire meal even after the server tried to level it. This time we ate at the tiny (but very cozy) bar. We really want to like this place but the food is only so-so. We went to Sun Tavern, three weeks before Christmas with a bunch of old friends , hoping for some Christmas ambience and a great dinner with drinks in this old world historic Tavern. Unfortunately, our hopes were dashed as the Christmas decor and ambience was scant to non-existent, at best. Was the food good? Yes . Were the drinks. nice? Yes. Was the waitress, fun and attentive? Yes. Will we go back there next year for our annual Christmas cheer get-together to celebrate the beginning of the holidays in a fun & festive atmosphere? Probably not. read more

Imagine our delight to have Sasha as our waitress for my birthday dinner! We trust her descriptions of the food and wines, and she did not disappoint. Her service is always professional with a side of humor. We love the food here and often try the specials, if Sasha recommends them. We are thrilled that our children give us gift cards here. The horseradish potatoe pancake could be a starter in the winter, it's so good. We shall be back soon and hope to see Sasha again. read more

The Sun Tavern is always a good meal. Cocktails are consistently good, service is good, ambience is a quaint New England vibe. I've been there several times and it's consistently good. This last trip: Harvest martini was great, calamari was okay (a little too much sauce so less crispy), Caesar salad was great. Roasted half chicken and monkfish special were delicious. Several years ago I reviewed this as a "great fine dining place." It really isn't anymore. I visited with my partner a few weeks ago. We hadn't been in a while. It used to be our regular weekend place but we got tired of the fact that the menu hardly changed and the food seemed to be slipping. Now, years later we returned to find that the menu is still basically the same and the food is mediocre. We got a bruschetta appetizer that inexplicably looked and tasted like pizza. Burger overcooked. Steak overcooked. Most of the dishes tend to be a protein with bland mashed and even blander root vegetables. Sorry folks, but this restaurant is stuck in a rut. I recently visited this lovely haunted resteraunts . The dinner was amazing roasted half chicken and veggies ! The only reason no 5 stars the Sushi grade coconut shrimp gave my friend and I food poisoning . We were deathly I'll 3 days ! This place is so adorable I can't stand it. We came for my parents anniversary and I thought they were bringing me to someone's house. It's a crazy old house from the 1700s and is apparently haunted? Yes please. We got (delicious) drinks at the bar first from Heather at the bar and sipped them by the fireplace before we were able to lounge a bit as our table was already ready. We were seated in the area down by the kitchen which was so fun. Our server was Sasha and she was so fun and made our night. Everything was delicious and Sasha topped the night off with a anniversary dessert and card and even a special rock that she had painted!
