Our group of six stopped by The Sunken Well Tavern around 10:30 on a Saturday for brunch while in town for a wedding. We were seated right away on their patio, which was very cozy with heaters and fire pits. The menu sounded great and they had a lot of featured brunch items that were a little fancier. I went with the sausage, egg, and cheese on English muffin with a side of cheesy grits. Our food came out pretty quickly, but one of the sandwiches was wrong, which they fixed right away. The sandwich was basic but tasty, and adding hot sauce made it even better. I loved the cheesy grits - they were more coarse than other grits I've had but I still really liked them. I had a few bites of Nate's sandwich, the New Jersey sunrise (Taylor ham, home fries, two fried eggs and American cheese), which was very hearty and tasty. Service was decent, they were pretty busy so we did have to ask for a few things, but we had a nice time. I'm putting this spot on my list of places to revisit when we're back in the area. read more

We found some street parking and were sat pretty quickly for our party of 4. Friendly service, and already somewhat busy on a Sunday morning around 10. There is a friendly stray cat that comes around and it's pet friendly outside. It was nice and quiet and a nice day to sit outside. I ordered a cup of coffee and the tater tot bowl. The tater tot bowl was good and had chunks of sliced Chorizo. I did wish it had more Chorizo and I think the ground Chorizo might be better with the dish but overall good. My friends enjoyed their meal as well and they do also have cocktails. read more

Amazing experience every time! It's usually busy on the weekends, but totally worth the wait. We're always greeted warmly and made to feel welcome. The atmosphere is cozy, with beautiful paintings on the walls -- and they're even for sale! This place has the best crawfish étouffée I've ever had. If you've never tried it, give it a shot -- you won't regret it. Steve, the owner, is awesome. When he's not back in the kitchen cooking, he comes out to greet us, which really adds a personal touch. My buddy and I stopped in for a quick bite while passing through. The place has that rustic and historic vibe with art work from local artists adorning the walls. Josh was the server who helped us and he was very attentive and helpful. A pretty cool dude in fact. I had the classic burger, but found it to be mediocre. The patty itself didn't really fit the bun and the flavor was average. My buddy had the roast beef with horseradish and the onion rings. The roast beef was balled up like the burger and there was little to no horseradish. The onion rings were good, but not excellent. Flavor was average as well for both. For drinks, atmosphere, and maybe a quick bite, it may be worth a try for those who are curious, or passing through. read more

The place has the vibe of a well loved college town pub. I imagine after several drinks, it would be the place to be. But for lunch on a random Thursday, it was just okay. The Reuben was lacking dressing and the burger was exceptionally greasy. A kid had the tenders which might have been deep fried twice. I did like the fries. They're more homemade chips than fries but they were good in moderation. I'm glad we went (I especially loved the wallpaper) but I'm not sure I'll be in a hurry to go back. read more

Sunken Well knows how to do a good hangover brunch complete with hearty biscuits and gravy and the cheesiest potatoes. They have a nice patio to enjoy some sunshine which usually includes a visit from Archie the neighborhood cat (who loves a good snack if you're willing to share just one bite). There can be longer wait times on the weekends which means orders can take a bit long but the food is always worth it. Three words: Get. The. Pancake. Your belly will thank you for it! read more

We've been to the sunken well tavern for dinner service but wanted to try their brunch today. Of course it's a Sunday in downtown so they were busy! We were seated right away at the bar area and promptly greeted with menus. I was really excited when I received the brunch specials for the day. They had so many yummy options! Pictured: Country Fried Steak Western Omelette Both were very tasty and served with large portions. The country fried steak had an amazing flavor, the cheesy potatoes were delicious, and my eggs were cooked to perfection. Next time we go I want to try the stuffed poblano. Wonderful hidden gem. Great vibes, art work on walls, and amazing and accommodating service. The food was great. Homemade onion rings, the chimichurri sauce on the picanha steak and the other specials were all excellent. Will plan to add this to the rotation when at the soccer complex nearby. We saw this place on a tour & decided to check it out. We were not disappointed. Made it there for brunch, which my hubby was thrilled about. He ended up with the shrimp & grits. (It's a favorite of his & he rates restaurants this way) and I just went for a burger. Burger was great & was cooked exactly like I wanted. The fries were almost sliced to be thin but were very nice. Almost a fry/chip consistency. Hubby loved the shrimp & grits. He got 7 shrimp (most places give 6 or less) and said he felt like the sausage must have been locally sourced. I love it here. Plenty of space, quality food, and excellent service. Their brunch menu is my favorite part. I have been here 5 or 6 times and walk away happy every time. Their menu rotates a little so it's fun to see what's new. They also hang up art from local artists making it fun to see what's new. Fast service and very good food! Cozy little place that felt like home but with better food! We ordered the chocolate chip pancake and they did the cutest whipped cream smiley face. The pancake was HUGE and so fluffy! We also got the Jersey Benedict and the bagel breakfast sandwich with a side of cheese potatoes and sausage gravy. On Sunday after Christmas in a college town two families drove in different directions to meet at Sunken Well Tavern. They handled our reservation for 9 with all the professionalism of a large restaurant. Accommodating and very personable. The dining room was already slammed and the kitchen produced great pancakes, gravy & biscuits, fried chicken and an assortment of other selections. Highly recommend!! read more

Sunken Tavern has the best brunch on Sundays and the best burgers on any other day of the week or weekend. My favorite is their home made corn beef hash which no other restaurant can touch bc they use precooked while Sunken Well Tavern makes there fresh. Don't take my word, I highly recommend trying it. Yes! Amongst my favorite places to grab breakfast. They also are also opened for lunch and dinner. But this is a charming little spot in downtown Fredericksburg to grab some delicious breakfast/brunch. I have only gone once and I am just dreaming about visiting them again. I just ordered a Western omelette and I was happy with my choice. Very casual atmosphere. It has a full bar and a lot of coffee. Check out their daily specials. We used to dine here very regularly, until several years ago and we didn't stop because of anything they did (or didn't do) here, it was simply due to newer places opening in the area and time being limited, so recently when I had the chance to visit once again for lunch, I went! Josh is still there... been seeing this guy for over 10 years here and at another joint that used to be in downtown F-burg. The menu is still excellent, loaded with in-house made deli meats on their amazing sandwiches. Amazing selections of entrées, side, etc. I opted for their Ruben with a side of onion rings and those amazing onion rings are just like I remember - tasty! The sandwich was really good, the corned beef was thick cut and flavorful too. Service is always good here! Would definitely recommend and will definitely return!! read more

First time eating here and was not overly impressed. The inside was small and VERY loud with a small bar with seating as well that was completely filled. We were seated immediately upon arrival and had some nice spicy bloody marys and ordered classic eggs bennie and the grilled octobus and shrimp tostadas - both were quite good. The problem is our server forgot about our order and didn't enter it - so we sat there forever while people who arrived after us were already served their food. She did comp our drinks. Interior could use some sprucing up. We've had better experiences at other restaurants downtown in more comfortable settings so this will not be a first choice. read more

Came here after looking for a fun spot to grab dinner. Loved that there was live music playing and although Mother's Day, it wasn't overly packed. We decided to sit on the patio since it was so nice out. Ambiance was great. Cool breeze and loved the visits from the neighborhood cats. The ambience of this restaurant was great. It was what really felt like a local pub. The people were great and the service was even better. I opted to get the bacon cheeseburger and it came out burnt the fries might as well be called chips because they were so hard they were crunchy. It felt like they were refried several times. Decided to try for lunch after all the good reviews. Sad to say, I won't be back. Don't know if it was an off day in the kitchen or it's just not a place for a sandwich. I had the roast beef on white ......the beef was extremely dry and fatty; the bread was so stale it fell apart when I tried to pick it up to eat...and then when I took a bite it was so dry. The fries were cold and more like a chip. The waitress was attentive but not very friendly. I liked the atmosphere but won't go back after spending $21 on a not so good sandwich and a soda. read more

It's in a residential area which kind of felt weird - they have both indoors and outdoors seating but it was hot so we wanted indoors - that was a 30 min wait. We finally got seated. My mimosa came to me all warm so after 1 I decided to not have anymore. They had wayyyyy too many flies for us to ignore. I ordered Memphis chicken - it was delish!! The cheesy potatoes that came with it though had sausage and the menu didn't mention that. I don't eat sausage. Husband ordered Country pork chops - too dry and hard. Sad story. We were a table of 5 on the patio on a beautiful day. It started off well. Our waitress gave us water and took our drink order. Came back with drinks and took our food order. 45 min she came back and said she screwed up and lost 2 table tickets, including ours, she apologized and we reordered. Another 30 minutes go by and still no food. We check with her, say we are now in a time crunch, and she says she'll check, comes back and says it'll be any minute. 15 min later still no food, we have a flight out of IAD and we need to leave sooner rather than later so we leave. Meanwhile every single table around us had customers served and flipped to new customers. And the new customers had food. Unbelievably bad. Lose the ticket, expedite the order. That's normal restaurant protocol. This clearly wasn't done. It's too bad, the food looked great as it came out for everyone but us. Not only that, we were the only table with people of color (1 white, 4 black) on the patio so opinion is split whether we had such unbelievably bad service because of race or just a majorly incompetent waitress and kitchen. It's too bad we have to think that way but she was able to serve everyone else in a timely manner. Even the other lost ticket table turned over 2x while we were still waiting. read more

Service was great but food was cold and they could definitely change that fry oil... Everyone who had the fries and onion rings got sick from that overused dirty grease. I forgot to take a picture but that micro plate appetizer was definitely "micro." For $13 I'd expected more than a quarter of a slice of bacon on a scoop of rice with a fried egg on top. read more
