What can I say, this place is a must visit when in Spokane. They are well known for the chicken fried steak. I have had it before and this is true, however if you like everything from kitchen on one plate, order the mulligan. This is everything but the kitchen sink one one plate. I honestly do not understand the three out of five overall stars. SD is my partner's and my home away from home. We're writers. We work out of our home and so there are many times we'll just go there to get out of the house and talk plot. We average at least once per week...probably more like twice. Sometimes we just share an app (best nachos we've found in Spokane and plenty for a meal for two) and others, we go the whole steak dinner route. Sure the baker comes in its foil with butter pats in their wrapper, but the toppings are fresh and tasty, and I'm not too proud to pull that foil off, especially when it means the potato is moist and tasty inside. I've eaten at far more expensive restaurants that can't make that claim. We love the broasted chicken so much, we got two big trays of it for our backyard wedding...and it all disappeared, gaining converts to SD in the process. Their salads are some of the best in town. Have never had wilting or watery veggies and the various proteins are fresh and yummy (no cold chicken on salads here...yuck). The Asian Chicken Salad has no comparison anywhere I've eaten...and I've traveled a lot. The burgers are all great, and the accompanying spuds will actually arrive extra crispy, if you so request. Their mac and cheese is the only one I've ordered twice...partially due to the suggestion of one of our favorite waitresses to try it with bacon on top. YUM. Not a fan of their fish, but only because I prefer a really light tempura style batter. Besides...I have fish at home all the time. They've added a couple of deserts over the years, but the carrot cake is still the recipe I'm trying to match at home. Plenty to share on that one! Their soups are all homemade and those I can eat are all super tasty. (Food allergies make soups problematic. Sigh) What else...oh. Drinks! Generous and great selection and reasonable prices. Good house wines, decent selection, excellent mixed drinks. When I indulge, I'm a single malt scotch person, and they have a small, but excellent selection with very reasonable prices. It's one of the few places I do indulge because most places really overprice their top shelf. Not here. I know what those bottles cost. I don't do beer, but my friends who do seem to really like the selection. TVs. There are plenty so you can have a nearby one adjusted to your viewing preference, which I really like, not being a football fan. Have we had slow service? Rarely, but sure. It happens. Generally there's a really good reason. Have we gotten a sub par meal? Sure. Who doesn't foul up once in a while? And as often as we eat there, it would be a miracle if there wasn't the occasional problem. We just mention it to the waitress/waiter and it's redone...with a smile. We have food allergies and often need to ask for adjustments to menus. No problem. And usually the staff remembers the next time we come in. If we forget to mention it to a new waiter, they redo the meal. I could go on, but I think you get the idea. If you're looking for fancy, this isn't where you go in Spokane. If you're looking for a place to meet family and friends or just to get away, a place where you can get a good, solid, homey-but-better (unless you're a master chef) meal with good spicing, flexibility, a Cheers-style welcome, (be prepared for quips exchanged between regulars and staff) for a reasonable price...it's really hard to beat The Swinging Doors. read more

This is a great sports bar. Came in on Friday morning (day after TG) to watch the Red Wings/Bruins game. They changed a TV to the game for us and from where we sat, we could easily see 3 college FB games and ours. They gave us a speaker tower for our table so we could hear the commentary from the Wings game. Had breakfast (decent) and great hot wings (unbreaded!). The service is horrible if you're not a regular. They do not care about non regulars and never will. The bartender, Jazz, walked by me twice to serve his regulars and never bothered to ask if I wanted anything. To him, only the regulars mattered. I was going to eat as the food is always exceptional but the service is so poor you'll need to beg to order! I live 3 blocks away and for years refused to go to this business because of either indifferent or flat rude service. I tried 3 times in the past few years and the standard of service for non regulars is still as bad. My wife and I stopped by the for the first time the other day for lunch, after a friend recommended that we give it a try. We both had the roast beef sandwich and fries, with sides of tartar and horseradish sauce. The sandwiches were in the $11-$12 range. Which came with fries. Forget if they charged extra for the sauces on the side. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the sandwiches had generous amounts of roast beef on toasted bread (forget the type of bread, but it was a "sandwich bread" rather than a roll). The fries were good, standard frozen crinkle cut fare with a hint of fried fish acquired from the oil. We each had a couple of specialty cocktails which were okay, but probably more expensive than they were worth. No worries about being too intoxicated to drive after a couple (or more if we desired) of those. Wait staff was friendly. The atmosphere (during lunch on a weekday, anyway) was pleasant. One of my favorite, 'come as you are' local dive bars. There's a TV screen on every vertical surface, it seems, and they're re-modeling their outdoor patio area. Kinda spendy for what you end up with, but they pour 'em stiff, so you forget about the tab pretty quick! ;o) read more

Nice atmosphere and friendly service but....the first time I ordered the clam strips they were way overcooked, clams dry and breading too crisp. Thought I'd give them another chance and ordered a second time. Again, too brown, almost unpalatable. I hate complaining or returning food so took off the breading so I could at least consume the clams...yikes. Some were nothing but breading and the rest had super tiny strips not even worth the effort. Very disappointing. read more

It was ok...had the nachos.....they came hot to our table with salsa and sour cream on the side like we asked....the server was very attentive, but the waitress sat a family full of Green Bay fans behind us, this was during the Seahawks/Green Bay game. The family made sure to tick my other half and I off by being extremely rude....the 12 year old they had with them was terrible! If I could give this place a negative score or a zero I would. We arrived with a large group. We all placed our orders around the same time. Everyone got their food. The waitress kept telling us we were up next. They are plating the food. Then she ignored us. We went to find the manager because it was an hour since we ordered and we still did not have our food. Our large group was beginning to depart. Everyone in our group got their food and ate. In our group people who ordered after us were served. The manager did not apologize. He even charged us for our bar bill. We ended up walking out with no food after being there over 2 hours. It was ridiculous. The waitress and the manager did not apologize. Did not comp the bill. Best of all, we had a special menu because our group was so large that limited what we could order so they could get the food out quicker. Big JOKE!! I will NEVER eat here again. I was alone on my birthday (December 27) as my wife was with my daughter in Michigan for the birth of our first grandchild. I saw the Swinging Doors sign advertising their free steak dinner on your birthday and pulled in to the parking lot. Staff was amazing pleasant despite being very busy. When I said it was my birthday, the first response was "happy birthday" and was shown on the menu my options. The meal was delicious and my lonely birthday was made very enjoyable. I used to go here all the time. It was my favorite hang-out. The food was good, a little pricey, but good. And, the wait service was pretty good. About a year ago the owner put (what I was told) about 10 thousand dollars into updating the patio. It's now all non-smoking. From the other reviews here, they should have kept the T.V., the sports, the beer, and the patio just the way the customers were used to. Who wants to sit around and wait for service, tap their feet, and watch 6 T.V. sets so loud you can't talk to anyone, and wait for their steak to arrive? I can go out and wait in the car, or I can just not go back. HEY, all you non-smokers, there's a new updated sports bar in town; Just for you! Bye. It was my 21st birthday and she was rude to me about ordering my birthday steak earlier and sort of back talked to me. Wow!!! If your not White don't go there! My wife and I went there this morning because we heard it was good. Wow were we wrong! We sat down and waited for 15 minutes and we're passed by at least 4 waiters and even the owner! Several couples sat down around us and we're served right away. We asked twice for menus and service but no one came! It was very apparent we were not welcome there. We finally just got up and started to leave, when I spotted a guy who said he was the owner. The first server I asked for help told me, "Sorry that's not my section [job]" and didn't even bother to tell me who was working that section. Well no more. The prices have gone way up. Every time a "new menu" comes out that means prices went up and portions went down. The quality of food went from great to terrible and I'm tired of paying my hard earned money for it. I go in one day and order a dish. The very next week that same dish was half the size. The drink prices have even gone up. Maybe they should quit counting fries and start counting the number of customers who are leaving and not coming back. My wife and I saw the advertisement on tv so we decided to check it out. It looks and feels like what you'd from a sports bar with plenty of tv's. I ordered a 16oz glass of Mac & Jack (African Amber) and can't recall ever having paid $10 for one. My wife had the Hail Mary and the Hot Mary, bloody Mary's and she thought they were very good and one contained double shots of Vodka, the other with a shot and a half and each of them cost less than my glass of beer! My wife had the Asian Chicken Salad, and it rated an "ok." I ordered the open faced turkey sandwich which comes with mashed potatoes and gravy. Be advised, the turkey is not carved turkey rather it is thinly sliced/shaved turkey like you would get at a deli counter and not much of it. I was hungry so I ate it, but will not order that again. In fairness to this business the other foods they serve might be terrific. I like supporting family owned businesses whenever I can and this place did offer a friendly atmosphere. I will likely go back again and try something else on the menu before making my final judgment. read more

Seriously the worst service ever. I can't stress this enough. Is it really that hard when its not even that busy. It took the gal 25 minutes to come back and take our most order and left in the middle of our order and didn't come back for awhile. I saw her busing other tables. Finally comes back and our order doesn't come for about 50 minutes and other tables seated later kept getting food. The food comes and surprise surprise its cold.. The burgers are nothing to write home. Something I could make at home.. A simple salad took forever. I'm not sure it was the kitchen. But we have had this witness before and same slow service. She forgot all the little extra things making it all the worse. I wouldn't come back other than my friends like the drinks. I was so close to talking to a manager. We have frequented The Doors many times over the years and have never been disappointed. As expected, when it's busy, service may be a little slow for food but the staff always communicates when the kitchen may run behind. The quality of the food and the service is always consistent and the staff seems to recognize us even if it's been months between visits. All of the staff is attuned to the needs of children based on age (whether a cup with a lid is needed or a high chair) and always engage my children to order their food independently. On our most recent visit we were there for Happy Hour and our server made sure to check and see if we wanted to order food and drinks before Happy Hour was over, the attentiveness to this small detail made a big difference. I do not, and will not, understand why people like this place!!! But then again, everyone in there was like 300 lbs! The words of the day kids are "dingy" and "soggy", and this is to describe the atmosphere and the food. It's like if someone ate up all the bad things about the south and crapped them into a building. It felt like they never cleaned the building after the smoking ban that was enacted so many years ago. Every item on the menu had at least one component of deep friedness, and that was a very disconcerting thing, seeing that so many people suggested this place to me. If I wanted to just get the guys and drink, this would be the place, but so many people said this is the place to eat... We've been going there for years less and less lately! Prices are too high for the quality of food! A pile of instant potatoes with instant gravy isn't quality food! It used to be a great place, and we spent alot if time there. So dissapointing, like losing a good friend! We went after Elton John concert one last time.
