The restaurant is located in a hotel. The decor and the overall atmosphere is dated. We sat in the far corner near the window and waited over 5 minutes for the waiter to come over. They were not busy, barely 8 tables for two waiters. We ordered our drinks and an appetizer. The waiter forgot to bring out one of the drinks and the bread we requested. Even after reminding him, it took him several minutes to bring them out. Our nacho appetizer was probably the best thing we had, which isn't saying much. The salsa on the nachos tasted like what you would get from a store bought jar and the chicken tasted as if it had been previously cooked and reheated. On to our main dishes, we all ordered well done hamburgers and what we got were charcoal burgers. The manager tried to make it right by replacing our meals with another dish. We put in orders for the chicken quesadilla and a cheese one. The chicken in the quesadilla tasted just like the one on the nachos. The meal completely ruined our appetites. Needless to say we left hungry and thoroughly disappointed. The only pleasant thing was the manager. Save your money and find a better place to dine. read more

One of the biggest perks about living in Salem is The Tavern on the Green. Always welcoming. Elegant but relaxed. Often a roaring fire in the fire place. Wonderful food. Friendly and helpful staff. Often see friends or people you'd like to know. During really bad storms, they are always open and we neighbors walk there and hang out over excellent red wine! Then there's the view of Salem Common. The Tavern on the Green in the Hawthorne Hotel is a hidden gem in Salem. There's no better place on a snowy winter day to have a hearty meal and good drinks while sitting by the fireplace. The bartenders and servers are very friendly and accommodating and the food is top notch. There's plenty of comfortable chairs too. I've lived in Salem for about 15 years and this place continues to be one of my favs, even with the influx of other places to eat and drink. Great stuff. read more

My friends and I frequently meet for lunch in the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem. Our first choice for our get-togethers is the Tavern on the Green. We have never been disappointed in our delicious lunches which are chosen from a menu that has daily specials as well as a varied regular menu. Prices are reasonable, service is good, ambience is pleasant (a fireplace glowing in the winter) and parking is easy in the large hotel lot. I highly recommend the Tavern in the Hawthorne. I felt compelled to write about my recent experience at Tavern on the Green. What got me there was the cozy atmosphere, complete with a fireplace. What made the biggest impression on me was the service. My friends and I sat at the bar and was greeted by the friendly, upbeat bartender Allison. We had our drinks in no time at all. She helped us with the menu, suggesting a variety of appetizers that paired nicely with our cocktails, She was very witty and helped us navigate our next stop. She had the whole bar engaged, as if they were all there just for her. With so many places to drink and eat in the area, maybe she is the reason they flock. read more

We ate here for lunch during a very busy October weekend. I was very unimpressed. We got seated pretty quickly. Atmosphere was cozy and comfortable. I ordered the mushroom ragout w/croustini and the goat cheese stuffed figs. The ragout was flavorless and the bread was soggy. The figs were very good but not worth going back for. The Tavern on the Green has a special place in my heart since I went on my first date with my now fiancé there. I must say the management needs to reevaluate their servers and their lack of training. When you arrive it takes quite a long time to receive even a water, and you feel as though you are imposing if you ask for some bread before your meal. Though the atmosphere is quite cozy with a lit fireplace and carved wood, the servers are forced to leave the whole dining room completely unattended as they run out to the kitchen downstairs in a separate area of hotel to get food orders. The food however is usually fresh and pretty good for the price. I wouldn't say steer clear, just be prepared that you may experience a longer dining time than at some restaurants. read more

Such a cozy room. Service can be slow. Met an old friend for lunch. Ordered lobster quesadillas, and was half way thru first triangle before I realized it was chicken, not lobster. Had ordered guacamole, which was not offered with the dish for some reason. Chopped tomatoes instead of salsa. When I pointed out I had received the wrong entree, waiter said he would adjust the bill. What I got was the charge for the tiny guacamole removed from the total.too bad service and food doesn't match the ambience. read more

If you're visiting Salem for the local attractions or just there on business, I highly recommend the Tavern on the Green in the historic Hawthorne Hotel for a great meal in a relaxing environment. It is located on Salem Common, across from the Witch Museum and just steps away from the Peabody Essex Museum, shopping, tourist attractions and parking. The lunch menu offers a great selection of items, many with an interesting twist, and all reasonably priced. I go straight for the crab cake sandwich on a brioche bun with sweet potato fries. Delicious. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, and each time I've been there, the General Manager has stopped by every table to greet you and see how you're doing. I love that personal touch. I later found her tidying up in the restroom. The management here clearly takes good service personally. The Tavern itself is in a beautiful oak paneled room with high ceilings, comfortable wing chairs and a large fireplace to take the chill off on cool days. I used to live in Salem and am familiar with most of the restaurants. Now when I visit there, I always stop for lunch at the Tavern on the Green. It's a great respite from the hustle and bustle of Salem with great food and a unique and wonderful ambiance that can't be beat. read more
