I came to the Tipsy Trout midway through a summer bike ride through the glorious trails in the area. My friend, who lives nearby, made sure to get us a table on the patio looking out over the creek. It was a divine setting. I had the elk burger with roasted poblano pepper, goat cheese, and blueberry sauce because of the old saying "When in Colorado..." or something like that. Even though I'm still not convinced that elk makes a burger than good old-fashioned cow, it was still really, really good. The food is fine but nothing to go out of your way for. The drinks taste watery and flavorless. And the owner called multiple people in my party assholes and pricks while we were trying to enjoy our day and almost squared up to fight an older member sitting at our table. We had lunch on a Thursday in April at at the Tipsy Trout, which has a view of the Frying Pan River. We had been to the same restaurant on previous visits, I think most recently in 2005. but the name and ownership had changed. (Our server said it had been the Tipsy Trout for about five years. ) My uncle said that it had changed ownership several times, and that it hadn't been very good under some of the previous owners. It's good now. The restaurant has a view of the Frying Pan River. On past visits, we've seen catch-and-release fly fishers wading in the river, sometimes catching (and releasing) fish, but this time all we saw was a construction worker rebuilding the restaurant's outdoor deck. I don't eat much meat, but I ordered the elk burger, out of curiosity, and the assumption that the elk was not the product of a factory farm. The meat was a bit on the bland side, but the burger as a whole was delicious. I shared sweet potato fries with my wife (her idea); they almost always taste yummy, and these were just right on texture too. Win! My wife ordered a quinoa salad with avocado; they were out of simple avocado, but offered guacamole instead, which she shared. The guacamole was pretty good, but had a bit more onion than I like. She liked the salad. Our boy ordered sliders, and ate barely a nibble. Later, however, he devoured them enthusiastically, without even waiting for them to be reheated. Given that he refused to finish his leftover slider in Denver, and gobbled up these, I think he liked them a lot. My father ordered fish tacos, which were served with black beans and the same guacamole. He said that they were good, but I couldn't tell whether he meant "good enough", "fantastic", or somewhere in between. My uncle had a bowl of trout soup, and a caesar salad. He liked both, particularly the soup. Service was solid. The staff, however, were not wearing masks. It seems like almost no one in Colorado remembers that the pandemic has killed over a million people, and isn't over. I rate it a solid four-star "Yay! I'm a fan." It's very good, but a bit expensive (maybe just because it's the mountains), and a five-star "Best ever" would be grade inflation. read more

More than once I have had the horrible food and extremely horrible service. One time I ordered the lettuce wraps and the lettuce still had manure and bugs on it. Then the manager said it comes pre-washed from the distributor, to which we pointed out that the kitchen staff should wash everything when it arrives. Then the manager got mad because I refused to eat it, it had bugs and dirt on it! I will never go back. Incompetence and laziness has ruined that place. read more

Came in after a bike ride and received terrible service. Our server was no where to be found, rushed us when ordering, wasn't able to answer simple questions about the menu. It makes so much sense that tip is automatically included here because they wouldn't get any if they didn't force it. On the way out I overheard our waitress talking poorly about another customer. I've been here twice with different friends. The first group was a bit rowdy and we had a blast out on the deck on a Thursday after some fishing. The food was so good that I came back and again fantastic! Went with the elk burger per everyone's suggestion and it was delicious. The service was great. My husband had a buffalo burger; he gives it two thumbs up. My son ordered a milk and it came in a cute reusable colorfully decorated plastic cup with a matching lid. He enjoyed his burger and the sweet potato fries I ordered. Our other guest enjoyed his chowder with the two packets of crackers. One thing I'm not a huge fan of is how the forks and knives are stashed in a jug and you have to create your own set up. It certainly isn't worth taking off a star. The chowder came with a spoon. The interior has the vibe of a cozy camp in the woods with huge trophy antlers over the door. The wooden exposed beams add to the charm. Construction of a new outdoor deck overlooking the river is well underway (as of March 2022). The bathrooms are tidy and clean. We will return if back in town! read more

Even though it was raining, the umbrellas were large enough to keep us dry. The ambiance reminded me of seafood places in New Orleans. Excellent dining experience! read more

Matradee, Andy, was completely lazy and wouldn't seat us immediately when there were plenty of tables, entire half of restaurant was empty. The bartenders were beyond rude... "what do you want?" Awesome experience!..... Went here at the suggestion of one of the owner's buddies who we met on the way down from hagedorn pass while riding our Adventure bikes. Overall ambience was really cool . Open seating along the Frying pan River...Perfect for a summer afternoon!.. we both saw the guy at the end of the bar devouring an awesome looking crispy chicken sandwich, so we followed suite and were equally impressed. If you've posted here that the service is subpar..check yourself. Everyone is short staffed so you do have to be patient. That said, this place is amazing. The grilled cheese and Tomato soup are particularly good. The Caesar salad is awesome. So is the polenta shrimp app. My friend loves the BLT and the sliders.. If you look younger than 25 the blonder bartender will hassle you even if it's a new ID. As someone who's worked in the food industry I expected a lot more customer service than what was given to my friend and I. On top of hassling over a REAL ID, she proceeded to still serve us "alcohol" and that's a stretch. My friend and I don't get drinks often so we're considered "lightweight" which means that a couple sips into our drinks, we should feel the effects. We literally chugged our drinks and were just as sober as when we walked in. The blonde bartender should really take into consideration that Basalt is not a known city in Colorado and that anyone coming in is a blessing for a possible good tip. If you come up to someone and be like "Food or drinks?" in the snobbiest ton you can muster then you're starting off on the wrong foot for a solid tip. With the way we were treated I have already told everyone in our company of 20 plus people who travel up to the mountains to stay clear of Tipsy Trout or how I like to call it now "The Sober Salmon". As someone who's banking on tips they really need to take some classes on customer service and how to be a great bartender because no matter race or age, if we're legal to drink then do you're job. The ONLY silver lining at this place is the fact that it was warm. I'm not sure if they're only nice to locals or what but I'm shocked this place has been running as long as it's been. The only greeting we got was when we were leaving and it took a lot of patience to even want to pay for our drinks and let alone tip the worst bartender I've ever met. We decided to tip a couple dollars because we didn't know if maybe the bartender was having a bad day and wanted to project that onto younger guests but they don't say "leave it at the door" for no reason. I won't be coming back, not like they care I'm sure. But best believe that I'm not the only one who is appalled by this place. Maybe that's why no one knows about it and why it was dead, switch up your bartenders and I'm sure the place would be booming with guests but that's just me. Other than that lovely experience I highly recommend going to the Jalisco Grill, they're amazing and really know what customer service is and the food is so amazing that you'll forget about the most horrible experience ever at the Tipsy Trout! Went to the trout last night. We waited at the hostess stand for about 5 minutes to be seated until a woman comes over and tells us to sit anywhere. The was only one waiter for the entire dining room, so it took a couple of minutes for him to take our drink and appetizer orders. The lettuce wraps were really good, although the ratio of protein to vegetables was way off. I got the burger and was really disappointed. The patty seemed like it wasn't house made and the bottom bun was a soggy mess. The additional condiments were brought to me in packets. For $17, I expect better. My wife got the fish and chips and she said they were ok, but there was no malt vinegar on the side. I've been coming to this place for over 20 years, and have seen owners come and go, but at these prices I expect more. read more

Terrible service. Waitress didn't show up to our table for 20 minutes and when she finally did she wouldn't even look at us when we were asking questions about the menu or ordering. We were charged for a flavorless drink that we returned, not to mention the automatically included tip on said flavorless beverage. I guess that is the only way they get tips here. The location is great; the decor inviting. The food was delicious and the drinks were awesome. The witch who was our waitress needs to get back on her broom and return to oz. The service was terrible. She rushed us to make decisions on drinks and food, then walked away stating she had to many tables to wait on us to decide; it wasn't that busy. Once she took our order she wouldn't split the ticket and told us to figure it out afterwards. She was put out that we asked for another appetizer plate when she shorted us one. As we attempted to sort out the bill after dinner she abandoned us and sent another server over to help us; he split the bill effortlessly and saved the day. This was our first and last visit to this establishment. Word of advice for the owners; ditch the frumpy middle aged bitch with short hair and glasses; she's driving away customers. read more

Incredibly poor service. ZERO facilities for bicyclists. The only bike rack is for rental drop off. I'd have to light myself on fire for attention. Hardly anyone went behind the bar (where I sat) except to ring up checks. Probably a good place for tipsy people (hence the name!) who only want to drink beer and get a pitcher. read more

This place is a little dirty, during peak covid times I saw the staff wearing masks down and would only pull them up when customers came near, touching their face and then the food! Yikes. Absolutely five-star fantastic location on the river. Great beer selection as well. I was little underwhelmed with the stuffed trout dish (needed more capers or seasoning) and especially with the green chili. I love Colorado green chili and New Mexico hatch green chili. This 1 lacks flavor and heat. There are probably other dishes that are fantastic and my wife's Burger was delicious. Location and atmosphere alone is worth coming here and find the food you like. read more
