When I saw Aroma Bakery and Ice Cream, I just wondered in and took a few samples. Aroma Bakery is not a big bakery and only has a few tables for coffee, ice cream, snacks and pan dulce. Today, I did not touch the crusty Bolillo or "Pan Frances", churro and concha. I picked up a cemita (sesame encrusted bun), Orejas or Palmiers (Elephant ear), Beso (Kiss), puerquitos (pig-shaped Mexican cookies) and a forgotten cookie to go. The cemita has a texture similar to brioche. I normally made a sandwich with this bread but today, it was just put in a microwave oven for 15 seconds and enjoyed the slightly sweet, airy, and golden-sesame crusted bun. Wife loves her Orejas or Palmiers. It is puffy, and crunchy. The Beso or Kiss is a dome shaped dough joined with a jam or jelly and rolled with fine shredded coconut. It is little on the hard side. I like the puerquitos or piggies. It is pig-shaped cookies with ingredients like flour, eggs, piloncillo, cinnamon, baking powder and an egg wash for its shiny finish. Please note that pilocillo is a unrefined sugar from boiling the sugarcane juices. Puegquitos has a soft, chewy texture with a touch of cinnamon and honey, making them all together a not-too-sweet treat to enjoy all day. This is my first visit. The staff is very friendly. He informed me they made Rosca del Reyes (King's bread) in early January. Wow, I'm sure we'll return for more!

From there, the Perfect Cup is a short walk and ideal mental reset to transport anyone that visits Matlacha into the prophetic and elusive "Island Time." The bubbly and enlivening environment is enough to recharge you for a play day in Matlacha. It is inspiring to see how much this small community of even smaller business manage to survive and thrive all along a 1000' strip of delightfully walkable roadway. The breakfast burrito could easily feed four people. Our lone young male in the group - who might have a tapeworm based upon his ability to devour gigantic amounts of food - did his best, but could only consume about 2/3 of it. He said it was amazing, especially when paired with their delicious house made hot sauce. The place is very clean, including the bathrooms. The clientele were a menagerie from various demographics...retirees, blue collar workers, bikers, vacationers; everyone was pleasant & seemed to be enjoying their meals.
