The decor and ambiance of the place is gorgeous. And when I first got to the restaurant I felt comfortable and welcomed by the hosts. The drinks were okay we got the Naked in the summer beams and divine image. The naked in the summer beams was good and really strong. But the divine image was TOO spicy. It was bearable once it was diluted. We ordered the hamachi crudo, banh xeo, house made egg noodles with mushroom, and the singaporean chili crab fried rice. The egg noodles and the fried rice were the better dishes it was still lacking flavor. The hamachi crudo was too spicy to really enjoy. The banh xeo was okay we didn't get as many charred mushrooms on there. The dessert was good actually. We ordered the Egg Tart cake and the banana split. I would not complain to have that egg tart everyday. I was planning on giving Tyger at least 3 stars based on my take so far. But honestly haven't been treated like this in any restaurant for the last 5 years I've lived in NYC. The check came in the same time as the dessert. We took care of that first so we could properly enjoy the dessert. Within 5ish minutes, someone told us we had to leave the table soon, and then apologized to us a few minutes later telling us there were more tables available and we can keep our table. We have at this point been at the table for under 90 min- with still a full cocktail and TWO full desserts. A gentleman from the front came to our table 5 minutes later telling us "they needed this table a while ago" and we needed to "move our stuff to the bar". There were STILL open tables around, but we were clearly one of the few people of color seated in the area. There have been people sitting there long before we got there and they didn't have food or anything in front of them. It just didn't seem to make any sense since this incident was right after we were apologizing to? Weird. So would I be back, no. It seemed very disrespectful in the approach. We were okay to even leave earlier when we were first told we might have to leave. Seemed like there was no communication between the staff. read more

I've been here a few times; the latest was last week on a Thursday with a friend. The food here is always really great and meant to be shared "family style" which is a great way to try different things. This time around I had the green beans and my friend had the prawns (with the heads off because they freak her out haha). I also had their frozen Tyger drink, which was tasty but seriously weak. I wouldn't be surprised if there was little to no alcohol in it. My only complaint is that the food is pricey for what you get. When you first walk in the bar is to the right and out of the way from the host desk (they were so sweet & welcoming)! The drinks we ordered from the bar were amazing. I thought the seasoning wasn't incorporated well enough with the fish, so the fish lacked flavor if we got a piece that didn't have as many seasoning flakes on it, and the inside of the fish didn't taste super exciting. The food here is inventive and flavorful. All of the dishes we tried were stunning. The lamb ribs are amazing. The crab fried rice is a treat but the noodles stole the show. Cooked perfectly and packed with umami. The Vietnamese tart is a must try! I would go just for that tart. The cocktails are fun, pretty, and also delicious. My wonderful boyfriend reserved us a highly coveted spot here for Valentine's Day. The 2-star rating is more for the food. Service was pretty standard good. Very accommodating and kind staff. It was recommended we ordered one thing from each of their courses. We felt like this was a perfect amount of food. We ordered: 1) hamachi crudo - 3/5 this is not bad. Tangy sauce, refreshing. Nothing mind blowing. 2) baby gem salad - 1.5/5 I didn't like this. The fried garlic or shallot on top made the whole thing bitter. Also lacking any depth. It's literally just lettuce and garlic with some super light citrus sauce. But it was the only thing making the rest of the food less heavy. 3) sirloin beef skewer - 4/5 best thing here hands down. It's very small, but flavorful and well-marinated. Flavorfully sweet, salty, and sour. 4) Singaporean chili crab fried rice - 2.5/5 this was just ok. I was expecting more since this is their signature dish. The flavoring is literally just on the chili dust and everything under it was sadly bland. 5) fried snapper - 2.5/5 same as the fried rice. The fish itself is bland throughout and the only flavors that come through is the chili blend on top. Very crispy and lightly well fried though. Curry sauce was good but it was an odd combo because I found myself wanting to taste the fish more so I often didn't dip. Expensive for what it is. 6) creme brûlée tart - 3/5 very good, nice flavors. Would love if this was a tad less sweet. Complimentary lassi - very good. Reminds me of a creamier milkis drink. Overall, I feel like the food was overpriced for what it is. You're in Chinatown and you can get better fried fish elsewhere for literally 1/4th of the price. Ambiance was nice, albeit a tad dark. The service was good. Great ambiance and food! We started with a drink--the Youthful Spring. Cocktail was definitely on the strong side, but I enjoyed the mix of ube and coconut flavor. We went with a few small plates (steak tartare, scallop, and escargot) as well as one large plate (roast duck breast). The tartare was definitely my favorite of the small plates; so flavorful, and the crispy shallots on top added a nice crunch. It was fun to eat with the shrimp crackers (although those weren't strictly necessary; the tartare is quite enjoyable on its own!). Scallop was super tender and delicious, though they do literally give you a single scallop. Escargot was probably my least favorite of the apps--it wasn't bad but a tad bit too salty/buttery for my taste. The roast duck breast was absolutely amazing! It was cooked perfectly and slightly sweet--the seasoning was effective without being overwhelming. The Tyger is relatively new to the restaurant scene (2 years old) and replaces a Chinese buffet that used to sit in its place. Modern, trendy, and youthful, the Tyger looks like your typical case of "out with the old, in with the new!" I never tried the buffet that used to occupy the same space, but I was excited to see if the Tyger deserved its place on the new lease. I came with my family on a Sunday night and the place was about half full. We ordered the hamachi crudo, banh xeo, miso butter escargot, australian tyger prawns, chicken grilled satay skewers, shaken beef skewers, nasi goreng, singaporean chili crab fried rice, coconut bomb, and a nightingale and youthful spring cocktails. The highlights of the meal were the hamachi crudo, singaporean crab fried rice, and miso butter escargot. The hamachi crudo with the salsa verde and coconut cream was an interesting and enjoyable sweet and spicy combination. The singaporean fried rice had a mild spice to it and was very flavorful (just wish it had more crab chunks in there). Lastly, the miso butter escargot (which I forgot to take a picture of) was so tasty and buttery and perfect with a side of bread. Everything else ranged from pretty good to okay. - The nasi goreng and skewers were pretty good and nothing to complain about but they weren't standouts - the coconut bomb had great flavors but the amount of whipped cream is overwhelming (I found the coconut meat and ice cream on the bottom much more enjoyable without the gimmicky whipped cream they serve on top for presentation purposes) - The banh xeo was a little too crispy for our liking but the flavors were nice. - The flavor of the Tyger Prawns were good but it would've been better if they didn't oversalt this - the nightingale cocktail was a good mix of floral alcohol but I've had better The only bad part of the meal was the youthful springs cocktail, which predominantly tasted like rum. I don't mind strong cocktails but the mix just wasn't good. In terms of service, the service was friendly and consistent so no complaints there. Overall I think the Tyger secures its name on the lease, but before anyone goes on an adventure to try the Tyger, I have one last tip. If you are planning to order a lot of food, just stick to one rice dish. They give you a ton of rice and then the side dishes are relatively small. It was quite loud in there so conversation was slightly harder but nevertheless a fun environment. Some of my faves: - Charred Octopus: one of my favorites of the night. The octopus was cooked perfectly. Tender with a nice kick - Salt and Pepper Snapper - lightly battered with the right amount of seasoning without it being overly oily. The Phnom Penh fried chicken was delicious as well, juicy and cooked perfectly but for the amount and price ... hard to justify for me. To be honest, most of the food at the Tyger was good but very overpriced for an already overpriced city. Banh Xeo and Singaporean Chili Crab Fried Rice was the biggest letdown for the night. Banh Xeo just didn't wow and Singaporean Chili Crab had minimum crab and didn't really remind me that much of the actual Singaporean Chili Crab dish. This is the kind of loud, trendy, bass-thumping Asian restaurant that 26yo girls named Ainsley love to frequent to talk about their amazing trip to Thailand (first time in Asia!!!11) and how exotic it was and how beautiful it was and how they feel soooo centered after spending a week in some tourist trap "Buddhist" retreat (which is just BWG-speak for "drunk partying in Phuket"). It is hard to describe the flavor, but basically hit umami buds for cocktails. The fried fish was vey expertly done. The fish was not heavily fried. It was a light fry and the fish was just done on the inside. It was very soft and flaky inside. The egg noodles were pretty good, it had a nice vinegary zing to it. I am sad they got cold very quickly. The fried chicken was very crispy however I don't think they drained enough oil so it got soggy very quickly.
