First off, they are apparently a long-standing salon but recently opened up with a new, sleek modern look. When I called to make the appointment, they were quick to answer and it was very easy to schedule. I went for a basic women's haircut which was $75. Lilian was friendly and clearly cared about doing a great job, listening to how I was wanting the hair to be cut. Going from longer hair to a shoulder length cut along with a shampoo and dry all took just under an hour. I am definitely interested in coming back! They're located on the second floor of a plaza with lots of parking, although it can be busy.

I am new to Houston and found the Upper Hand Salon by their claim to being voted the best salon in Houston on their website. My first experience was fantastic! Michelle assisted me in correcting a color issue and she did a fantastic job! The poor service came when I booked my second appointment to see Michelle. She was unavailable so it took 2 weeks for an appointment with her which I was willing to wait because she was that good. When I showed for my appointment today, Michelle was not in the salon and was working at a wedding. The receptionist told me she called to confirm the appointment the day before which was correct but the message I received said they were confirming an appointment with Journey at 11:00. I could not understand the name of the company in the message and did not know who Journey was so I called the number 4 times to find out what the message was referring to and did not get an answer. I was told that they moved all of Michelle's appointments to Journey for the day and my report time was 11:00. I did not receive a call to notify me of this change of stylist or appointment time which was incredibly unprofessional. The receptionist did offer to schedule another appointment with Michelle so I could specifically see her. I declined because I thought that was what I did 2 weeks ago. How can this be best practice or voted best salon with this type of business practices? read more

After having two bad experiences in a row I thought that I should write a review so other people don't end up with such an ugly hair cut... I decided to go short and called the salon a few days earlier to make my appointment. As I have had a bad experience before with Sheryl I decided to tell the front desk first that I was going to change my hair style and asked for their recommendation for a stylist experienced with short hair cut. The recepcionist recommended Caroline... She was very kind to me I can't complain about her profissionalism at all, but after 2 seconds of starting my hair curt I could sense that she was not feeling confident on what she was doing... making a long story short after finishing it I noticed the hair was totally uneven (and it wasn't meant to be that way) ... I asked her to fix one side, she tried but never managed to do so. When I told her that this wasn't exactly what I was looking for and asked her to make it shorter, she suggested it would be a good idea for me to go back home and if in the next day I was still not sure about the hairstyle then I should return and she would fix it for me... and so I went home. However, in the next day I was so upset on how it looked that I decided to go somewhere else to get it fixed. And I'm glad I did it! If you are looking for a hair stylist who is very knowledgeable about and skilled with coloring hair, go see Ashlee at this salon. She is a hairstylist who takes her work very seriously, and so you will likely have to have a consultation with her before she even works on your hair. I have been seeing Ashlee for maybe two years now, and we have run through a series of colors and styles, all of which were unique and excellently done. Ashlee also saved my hair when I had my first-ever hair disaster, during which I tried bleaching a stubborn green dye out of my hair. We thought we might have to cut off a lot of my hair off at one point, but thanks to Ashlee's knowledge and patience, no hair had to be cut; now, my hair is now extremely healthy for someone who has had much dye and bleaching. With regard to the salon's atmosphere, they typically play pretty good music, use great products (Goldwell), and all of the staff is friendly. I was surprised by some of the negative reviews below as I have been going to the Upper Hand for years and have had consistently good service. I moved away from the Westchase area yet continue to make the drive out there for my appointments. The gals at the front desk are always helpful and friendly; both when I get there and when scheduling my upcoming appointments. Brenda has been doing my mani and pedi's for years. She is clean, meticulous and friendly. She makes sure the entire experience is relaxing and pampering. Lisa, "the Eyebrow Queen," is the only person I let get close to my brows and do my waxing. She took her time with my first consultation and walked me through every step of reshaping my eyebrows. Her work is concise, neat and her room is sanitary. Her facials are another example of her amazing work. Overall, the salon is bright and sanitary with a positive and welcoming vibe. This is a long review but you really need to read it to the end. Ashlee is hands down the most talented color stylist you will find!! I literally travel all the way from San Antonio just to have her work on my hair. After a horrible experience with someone that damaged my beautiful long hair at a San Antonio salon I was so scared to ever dye my hair again. I really love being cool blonde even though my hair is dark brown and Ashlee helped me get my hair back healthy and beautiful again but also the light color I love. She keeps it real and will never do anything to harm your hair. Some stylist just care about their paycheck and are willing to damage your hair just to get business. Not this girl. She's a true talent! I literally get so many compliments even when my hair grows out and my roots are showing. She does such an amazing job! Bryan has been doing my hair for years and he is fantastic! I usually get blonde highlights and a cut and I always feel like a new person when he is finished with my hair! He gives great professional advice on improving the condition of your hair as mine has absolutely improved over the years after finally taking his advice. He is a great stylist with a great personality. I have really thick hair and I do not generally like sitting there to do my hair but Bryan makes the time fly and I always get great compliments on my hair. I have had other services here as well and I always leave the Upper Hand having had a great experience! Brenda also gives a great manicure! Just moved to Houston after having the same stylist in Boston for 15 years...to say I was nervous about someone new highlighting and cutting my hair is an understatement. But I got so incredibly lucky when I selected Jamie at The Upper Hand Royal Oaks (from her outstanding reviews and examples of her work on Instagram @jamiereelsstylist). She did such an awesome exceptional amazing job that I can honestly say my hair has never been as even-toned, bright, healthy and just so beautiful as it is now that Jamie is my girl. When I explained to the receptionist my mystery, she recommended an appointment with Andrew Pham, the resident hair cutting specialist at the salon. After a few seconds during my first appointment, Andrew knew what my problem was: my hair was different lengths all over having been cut for months in a very erratic way. Andrew is super talented! He always cuts and styles my hair with such detail and perfection. He takes the time to understand what you want and he executes beautifully. He has been trained as an expert in hair cuts, so he knows techniques that not everyone who does hair, does. I have been a client of Andrew's for many, many years! I miss him dearly in Dallas! I have fine, short hair and he's the BEST! There was not a month that would go by that I didn't get stopped at the grocery store, restaurants, Target, etc with people complimenting me on my haircut and wanting Andrew's name and number! If you want a good solid manicure in a very clean and relaxing environment I'd highly suggest seeing Brenda! Their pedicure chairs are so comfortable and they always have a great selection of polish colors. I also love how clean and sanitary the nail area is. I went in on a Saturday to make my appointment specifically with Odilia for the following Wednesday. Fortunately, I was able to briefly speak with her to discuss what I wanted - highlights [3 colours] and a good haircut; she told me her prices for each and, being in line with what I've paid in the past, solidified the appointment. I arrived at 11:30 am. We took a few minutes to discuss what I wanted, both in colour and cut. I repeated that I wanted highlights and that I usually have three colours used; I showed her two different pictures of my own hair colour for reference. Odilia commented, "You really like your golden blonde." (see profile photo) Was told that I would be out of there in "three hours, tops" (sounds about right - I have lot of hair). Odilia comes out with two tubs of colour - a highlight and a lowlight. I never asked for a lowlight, but this is not my profession and maybe she sees something I don't. This was a very slow process. Literally. I have never in my life had the back of my hair finish processing and be rinsed before the rest of my hair is processed under a dryer. When the colouring is complete, there is cutting. A lot of cutting. More cutting than I requested, but my hair grows fast and it's really not a big deal. And, in all honesty, it is a good healthy cut. FIVE HOURS + LATER (yes, you read that correctly) and nearly $400 lighter - I walk out with taupe / light brown hair. Not even close to what I asked for when I walked in. And I was charged for lowlights, something I never requested. Salon lighting is always different than home lighting, so I thought maybe it wasn't really as dark as it appeared. Nope, it was. I immediately called the salon and spoke with Odilia, explaining that nobody's happy and this isn't going to work. Giving credit where credit is due - she offered to correct it immediately, but my time constraints did not allow for me to return for two weeks. During this time, girlfriends said the colour was beautiful (honestly, it was)...but definitely not "my" colour. While many of you may have had, or continue to have, a positive experience at this salon - I did not.

After moving from California, I search in vain for a beard and men's stylist with an eye for what works and what doesn't. If you have a full beard or long hair, William should be your hair guy. What I like is that he knows me, how my hair grows and what look I'm going for.... Definitely a step up from trendy barbershops that give you a shot of whisky, but have no clue who you are or what you like/need. Also, if he recommends you try something slightly different, trust him... he knows what he's doing. My beard rocks and it's because of William (aka Guillermo)!
