Thought the food was ok and reasonably priced for some dogs... the coleslaw and chili combo is my favorite. Two dogs filled me up pretty good. The food came out in less than 5 minutes. Cashier at register was pleasant and took our orders quickly and kept things moving. There's a lot of history with this place being around since 1928. Over all a positive experience. read more

What I did like, restaurant was spacious and clean, easy to get to right off I85, the good pebble ice, sweet soda adjusted perfect, great onion rings. Not so great, order takers that look pissed you showed up, very small dogs and burgers, dry chili, dry burger, so over cooked you could use them as jerky treats for your pooch. So I didn't give it 4 stars because the food is the best. The chili hot dog nor the chili is that you've ever had. The burgers are tiny and the fries can sometimes be soggy but this place is home and it has a home feeling. The place is always extremely clean even though it's always extremely busy. The customer service at this location is more of a rush feeling whereas downtown they still greet you with a smile although they're busier. I always go for the chili dogs and i add chili, which is $0.51 extra and I always get the onion rings. To me the onion rings are the best. They're extra greasy onion rings and still remains one of my favorite onion rings. I grew up on this food so to me the food is the best, it's a at home feeling. The varsity always makes you feel welcomed. Like you're at Grandma's house. Nothing fancy, just simple food. And let's just say that frosty Orange, it's a must-try. The varsity is not going to be for everyone, especially if you're from out of town but if you grew up on this food, it's a nostalgic feeling. read more

Slow, beyond belief. Waited in the drive through for 45 minutes. Courteous staff. The food is decent, but not as good as the reputation.

You're either a Varsity fan or you're not. It isn't for the gourmands among you, and you won't much like it if you're hooked on average American fast food. The Varsity is regional, traditional, as much about Atlanta as Peachtree Street and the Fox. It is to Atlanta what cheese steak joints are to Philly. If you're from somewhere else and don't like the Varsity, Atlantans won't care if you like it or not. But if you're willing to try a good old fashioned chili dog or burger and learn the lingo (two glorified steaks) , you'll probably enjoy the place. Me? I love it and everything they serve. WOW. I hate to do this but I have got to come down from a 5 Star at the Downtown location (The ORIGINAL) to a 2 Star here. Let me tell you why: 1. It was quiet as hell in here. I only heard one "What'll Ya Have? What'll Ya Have?" and it was not said with much enthusiasm nor attitude. And it was from a cashier on the other end of the counter. 2. They have a "Drive Thru Window". WTH? At The Varsity. This is just too damn much. I should have driven off as soon as I saw that sign. 3. I walked in to a quiet establishment. WTH is all of the noise???? 4. Why oh Sweet Baby Jesus did I see napkins all over the floor and Coke spilled all over the counter top at the register? This is sad because the original is like 2-3 times bigger than this location and it's always clean! 5. Could these people get any damn slower? No!....Not until they die. They were moving at the speed of Slow up in this joint. And with that said. my burger with cheese, onion rings and fries were some of the best I've had from The Varsity in a while. But I can't justify a 3 Star with this lack luster environment. I just can't do it! I should add that my waitress was nice and friendly. But she needed a shot or two of Caffeine. Instead of writing a whole story about this place... I'm just going to list out some things... 1. Went here on a Sunday afternoon for some hot dogs... as soon as we walked in, I was expecting a lot of hype... What ya'll have what ya'll have blah blah... nothing. 2. There were flies everywhere, at least 10-15 flies swarming around the tables and chairs 3. Both condiment stations had no forks, spoons to scoop onions onto my dogs. 4. The limpy greasy fries were boring, even with the side of chili and cheese, which I think comes from a can 5. There's absolutely nothing here that I couldn't make at home for absolutely nothing as far as price. 6. What's so great about a slaw dog? Nothing, it's just a naked dog topped with slaw. It was just boring to me. and lastly... I'm not thrilled about the meat to bun ratio because the hot dogs were skinny as hell. This place has been around FOREVER, and as such is definitely a place you should visit while in the Atlanta area. My mom & I stopped by the Norcross Varsity on our way to the airport, and we each got our fill of the greasy yummies they have to offer. She got the burger, which is small-ish, but apparently delivers on the flavor. I, being the vegetarian that I am, was actually able to find something to eat... A pimento cheese sandwich. MAN, it was good, but SO greasy and calorically laden that I probably need to limit myself to one every millenia. Their onion rings rock, and their fries are fresh-cut and have a bit of potato skin left on so they're nice & tasty. This was one of many trips I've made to Varsity, and definitely not the last. This place is worth the trip for the history and for some unhealthy but tasty food. read more

Honestly not as bad as previous reviews, but not what I was expecting. The tables were clean, condiments well stocked and the lines were short. The regular burger is very small (happy meal size), which I happen to find the perfect size. Fries were good (way better than frozen!), but needed a few more minutes in the fryer to be great. They were pretty limp. The onion rings were SO greasy. Of course you expect grease, but they were crazy greasy. The ones at the top do taste good, once you move past the guilt/concern for your health. Forget eating the rings at the bottom of the container. They have been sitting there soaking up all the excess grease and are not appetizing. The famous orange drink is Tang correct? Health nuts will be horrified by The Varsity. Extremely unimpressed. I've heard several people talk about the varsity, so I figured I would try it out. When approaching the menu, I thought to myself "Wow, how expensive for fast food- Especially hotdogs, hamburgers and french fries- they must really taste amazing." I was certainly wrong. The hotdog was no more special than any other hotdog just ridiculously overpriced. The hamburger was also underwhelming, and the french fries were overly greasy, soggy, and chewy. The peach pie was the only decent item I ordered from the menu, but at two dollars for one small fried pie, it should be delicious. Customer service was mediocre at best. Most of the workers looked unhappy to be there. However, they could've been the most chipper crew in the fast food world, but even that wouldn't have made the food worth anywhere near $13. read more

I debated for awhile on how many stars to give the Varsity. What'll you have? Well for me it's simple. I have gotten the same thing for my entire life a number 6 with a Varsity Orange. Occasionally I will venture off with a Frosted Orange but I don't always enjoy a brain freeze. The onion rings, the fries, just the mood are great. You have some very friendly people who are always smiling. They sometimes get frustrated just like people at any job do. They dislike people who are on the phone. It's a family tradition to go to the varsity first thing after the plane lands in A-T-L. My father is the one who insists. He grew up on this stuff. I like my dad, so I humor him. The frosted orange is great, as is the PC (chocolate milk over ice). It's pretty cool to hear the "whatta ya have? Whatta ya have?" The place is clean- even the downtown location, which is where a tourist should go at least once in their life. The history is cool and that's where the warm fuzzies end... The food is not good, it's as acceptable as a 7-11 hamburger and no where near as good as a 7-11 hotdog. The chili...come on, I'm a Texan, that's chili puree! Drenched in grease would describe the onion rings and fries. This is a heart attack waiting to happen. And if I have a heart attack and die- I HOPE it's after a better meal than THIS! But if I'm ever in town with non-locals...I'll probably make em stop and sing the praise as much as my father. This is a really clean location and the service is outstanding. Don't expect gourmet food here. its just chili dogs and burgers. Nothing really special, but its good. The food is really simple. A review from a person in California: I was over in Atlanta for an engagement party and I had to stop by this place. I got myself a chili dog, slaw dog, and fries. The food was great. The only complaint I had was that the price does not match up with the quantity of food you get. Maybe I'm spoiled because Costco sells a hot dog and soda for only $1.50. Even so, I give this place 3 stars because of the atmosphere. Here in Cali, we don't really have much pride about college and college sports (except USC). I'm glad I went for the simple fact it's a GA staple, but the food was ehhh and the atmosphere was fun.. Definitely worth a stop, but don't expect the best. I love the gimmicky "what'll ya have?" but I went at a quiet part of dinner, so the energy level wasn't as high as I expected. Maybe a bustling lunch would've been better? But overall, glad I went, but I definitely don't need to go back, happy to cross that off my ATL bucketlist. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped here for a quick bite on the way to a movie. I'm new to Atlanta and had never even hear of The Varsity. He claimed that it was an "Atlanta icon" and that I had to try it at least once. The food was very meh, just your run of the mill fast food. The burger was alright, but a little small. I got a chocolate milkshake that was lacking in flavor and never melted enough or me to actually be able to use my straw. The fries were pretty darn good though! And my boyfriend got the orange ice which tasted just like a dreamsicle! Like I swear they're back there just melting dreamsicles and putting them in cups! I did like the atmosphere of this place. It was reminiscent of an old diner and they have cute little paper hats for the kids to play with (not gonna lie, I took one for myself!). I can appreciate the significance of atmosphere and tradition, however this alone is not enough to keep me coming back for cheap fast food. It's classic fast food....not for everyone but the quality is the same as the original location downtown ( which is not bad for fast food if you do not want to know the ingredients or nutritional information ), Atlanta. A carbon copy concept of the original but without the drive in stands and curb service. We wanted to try something we don't have back home and found that the food was good, the establishment was clean, the ambiance was nice and the staff was very courteous and friendly. The chili dog was exactly what I remember from the Varsity downtown (which I think is delicious in its own unique way), and the onion rings were BETTER (less greasy, more crispy). Service was great, and of course everything was absolutely correct with it; it came with ample napkins and condiments . . . so this would be a 4-star review, but . . . I just have to give them 2 stars for the burger. It was LITERALLY the worst burger I've had in my life. Seriously, cannot begin to describe the nastiness. I didn't even eat it. It was like a thin piece of cardboard sandwiched between two buns, with a shit-ton of pickles. It did not qualify as a food product in any way. For those of you keeping score - yes, I ordered a chili dog, onion rings, AND a burger. But I did this knowing that the burgers and dogs at the Varsity are pretty small - and then once I bit into that burger, I was GLAD I had something else to fall back on. LOL. I was in town for an event. I had heard a lot about the Varsity so decided to give it a try. I had heard so many good things that perhaps my expectations where too high. I did find that price wise it is reasonable. Food wise they are average at best. The burgers were ok. Sort of on the small side. My fries and onion rings where very greasy. This seemed to be the consensus in our group. We have similar places in my home area, and personally find the food better locally. read more

When you come to the Varsity you have to try the onion rings, yes they are a little greasy but it's worth it. My favorite meal is the chili slaw dog an order of onion rings and a large PC. The service is really fast. Try to speak up when ordering because some of the cashiers might have a hard time hearing. The food is really good. My only problems are is that their paper cups kinda smell weird and the tables aren't that sanitary. But, overal this is a really nice restaurant with nice food and staff.
