I love coming to the Velvet Dog during any and all sporting events for Cleveland. This entire street is filled with great places to catch some drinks with friends while watching a game. The only downside is that the venue usually has extremes when it comes to capacity. Either there is no one filling the large dance floor on the first floor or it's shoulder to shoulder with people. The cost of drinks is around $7 for a mixed drink and $4-5 for a canned beverage. The music is almost always the latest and greatest though. The best time to come if you like a crowd is Thursday-Sunday nights. Usually there is a dj pumping out jams for the crowds. During the weekday it's a little more empty if you like to have a venue to yourself! read more

HORRIBLE I went here with a group for our friend's birthday. The bouncer was extremely rude for no reason. He refused to let my friend in for wearing joggers but allowed others in wearing ripped up jeans and hoodies. At the end of the night, the bouncer made an unnecessary comment to one of us and got confrontational to where he shoved our friend (half his size) into me. I happened to be standing behind him and the force of his head almost broke my nose. None of us were wasted or acting unruly. The bouncer was on a powertrip. As for the rest of club, the drinks are watered down, the bartenders ignore you, and the music selection is poor. You're better off going to the Ivy down the street. read more

This is more specifically a review for the rooftop on a Sunday before a Browns game. We figured it would be packed on a gorgeous, sunny, November Sunday when we were looking for a place to grab a drink before heading over to the game. But we were able to go up without any trouble and a really decent crowd, not too packed but busy enough to have life. The deck was really enjoyable. The best part was the great Bloody Mary bar, with various types of infused vodka, and a condiments bar to build the rest on your own. It was really delicious! read more

I am so glad Velvet Dog is able to stay open during COVID 19! Not only are the cocktails amazing but the staff always goes above and beyond with customer service. My Boyfriend and I were here on 10/3/2020 as part of the "4th Annual Harry Potter Bar Crawl". This place has 3 floors and the downstairs bar was closed. I do not recommend this place if you are older than 57yrs old. There are about 25-30 steps to the 2nd floor which were tiring. We went to the Rooftop Bar area and sat on a couch. We drank a "Harry Potter" themed "Butterbeer" cocktail and it was kind of strong and didn't taste good so I had to chug it. This place wasn't "Harry Potter" themed decorated. There wasn't a DJ so we didn't dance to the music. We met some nice people. read more

This is one of the only real "clubs" I've been to so I don't have a whole lot to compare it to, but I've always had a good time. I've been here during the day before a concert, as well as late Friday and Saturday night. Yes, its always packed, and drinks sometimes take a while to order, but what fun is going out into the "nightlife" if its not overcrowded and crazy? The downstairs is always full of people and there is always room to dance. When I need a break, we just head upstairs which is usually a little slower and the bar not as full. The best part is that my parents used to come here when they were my age! I've been here with them and my younger sister! The Velvet Dog is right on the W.6th strip and is definitely the nightclub you want to be at in the area. The bouncer out front was super friendly and the staff welcoming. It's a pretty small space in my opinion, but they make good use of it. Along with the bar, there's plenty of spots to stand around at drink rails, as well as open areas to dance. The music is loud and keeps the crowd going, but it isn't so loud that you go deaf after being there for an hour. The bartenders here were very impressive. It was packed but they took multiple orders at once and poured with perfection, remembering each order exactly and the drinks were great! Dude, why did so many Cleveland yelpers think this place is cool? First, we entered and went up the 3 flight of stairs...and entered a patio with cougars and just..not your typical young professional crowd. We went to the side to get drinks.. hoping that would be better. I got the Purple Viper, my friend, the Comet Cool-aid. They both tasted like robitussin. Gross gross gross. We even tried to swirl it around to make it taste better. And on top of that, they came in PLASTIC CUPS! AAAAH. The rooftop patio is kind of fun though sometimes, if you're with friends... But meh. Don't get me wrong. This could be a cool place- we went up on the patio...but the crowd. Ugh. Gross. The music was great...but the crowd... was not even one consistency. It's hard not to give Velvet Dog a 5 star rating seeing as I'm there literally every weekend. Yes it's very clubby and can be crowded and drinks can take a long time to order, but in my opinion that's all part of the fun hustle and bustle on a Saturday night! This place always has great dance music. There are 4 different floors inside so it makes it super easy to change atmospheres if you're not digging the first or second floor. Lastly Velvet Dog's rooftop takes the cake. There is nothing better than sucking down a nice cold drinky, viewing the beautiful CLE skyline on a warm summer day and jamming out to some awesome tunes. Kimberley S. is right on the mark with this place. The rooftop is nice but overcrowded. I imagine that it would be a nice place to chill on a weekday evening. But, on a Saturday night it was overrun with Affliction shirts, hair gel, and chunky girls with dresses just long enough to cover their hoohas. My least favorite part was the guy who was either on drugs or severely intoxicated, who kept lurking up behind girls while they were dancing, nearly falling on them, eyes rolling back in his head. Then doing the hands up 'sorry' motion while moving on to the girls friend. Yes, this did happen to me, then I saw him pulling the same move on about 5 more girls. Wow. I looked around for security at this place but there was none. That's my cue to leave. read more

OK-- Velvet Dog totally redeems itself with it's awesome rooftop patio and happy hour specials. (Yes, I know that everyone says that...but it's true. So, there.) What else do I like about Velvet Dog? They always seem to have some free food floating around up on the patio during the summer months. Umm, yay? I don't know what I did to deserve this feast of fresh, hot pizza and chicken fingers, but I'll take it! The bartenders up there during happy hour are always really nice and talkative too. Nothing is worse than bitchy staff. I know, I've been that crappy tender before. I have to admit though, I'm not one for the club scene on the weekends. I think I grew out of that stage when I was in college. Truth be told, I had some great nights at Velvet Dog back in my day. If I were still into that "dance-my-butt-off-with-my-single-ladies-and-get-hit-on-by-creepers" time of my life, this would be my place. They've always had a good DJ, and if you're not digging the vibe on one floor, you can always scoot up to the 2nd or 3rd! I also like that the crowd never gets too-too chotchy. Don't get me wrong, there will be some groups of d-bags in their graphic tee's hanging around, trying to get all Jersey Shore on you. BUT, there really is no escaping that on W. 6th. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Velvet Dog never gets overtaken to the point of unbearable by that horrendous, yet very entertaining crowd. Plus, hell...the place is so friggin' big, you can just run away from them anyways. So yeah, I have no hate for you, Velvet Dog. And I'll surely visit you in the summer months of patio happy hours, but don't expect to see me there at night. Ohhh Velvet Dog... where do I begin. W 6th street nightlife really seems centered around The Velvet Dog and The Barley House. Neither of which I particularly like... but still seem to find myself in 2 or 3 times a year. The Velvet dog has 3 levels with multiple bar areas... all of which are too loud to hold a conversation in... but the roof top bar is probably the coolest. The Velvet Dog is somewhere that I do actually enjoy going to... but usually after I am already drunk with friends and we have collectively decided to just get drunker. read more

The Velvet Dog has as far as I know, one of the best, if not only rooftop bars in downtown Cleveland. Their isn't anywhere to sit unless you have bottle service but it's still a great atmosphere. We arrived a bit early on a Friday night, around 10 and it was very empty. Around 11 though this place was pretty packed! What I love most is, if you aren't feeling the dance scene there are some side rooms (I think the 3rd floor) with a bar to the side. Plenty of seating in there to talk and enjoy your drink. Staff was really nice and quick. Only negative, we tried to do bottle service but kept getting told different prices on the tables. We were then all ready to order a bottle of Dom when she finally told us there was a 3 bottle minimum. Later someone else told us it was only 1. Table never got filled so their loss of a couple hundred $$$. I'll be back but since I am pretty much out of the huge drunk dancing scene, I'd hit up happy hour and then head somewhere more laidback. read more

This bar is truly seasonal - only venture to the Velvet Dog on warm summer evenings (june - august), then avoid like the plague. The cliental tend to put on too much cologne, and have hair gel dripping down their faces, but it's worth venturing to the roof if you have a big group and want to keep to yourselves. This place is absolutely disgraceful. I am a teacher and respectable human. The bouncer told people asked to abandon any bag on their back (but not neccessarily backpack? Stay with me here..) on the sidewalk once we got to him. Do you realize how many purses can be worn as backpacks? I was grabbed by mine by the bouncer and made an example of. I said I could certainly show the contents of my purse but did not feel comfortable abandoning it on the side walk. My friends were ahead of me in line and were allowed in with their bags. My friends didn't see me being pulled backwards by my bag. We were out celebrating my birthday and once I was being questioned, all I wanted was to tell my friends inside that I couldn't come in. A girl in line, only 2 minutes later had a huge backpack that she just carried in front of her. She was allowed to come in by the same bouncer absolutely no questions asked. The bouncer said he was going to get the police involved and I asked him to please do, I respect authority and wanted someone to be logical in my situation. He just kept saying "today is not your day" and they have the right to deny entry to anyone they want. I just needed my friends to know where I was. Absolutely ridiculous. read more

Went here with a group of friends on a Friday night and the coolest place to go is their rooftop bar. It was a good night not too many douches this time. It wasn't that hard to get a drink this time either. Other times, I've experienced worst. I think we got lucky, lol. It's hit or miss basically. You'll get great bartenders one night but other nights could be different. But I'd have to say that this would be by far my favorite place to go on W. 6th. On rooftop, they also have cabanas you can reserve and also have bottle service. Not much of a dance area here but if you go downstairs to their first floor, you'll find plenty of space. One of the things you'll also notice is that they also have a lounge area where it's more quiet and chill place. I thought this was a great addition to have for those who wants to just chill. Overall, the wait outside can be a little annoying. I don't believe they do any RSVP lists because there is only one line. So you'll see people who will try to cut. read more

Climb Above the Cheese-Balls! THE UP-SIDE: This place has three floors, and an additional space on the roof. The rooftop space is the ONLY reason to attend. It's got a great view of downtown Cleveland and is always lively in the warmer months. THE DOWN-SIDE: Can you say "cheese-balls?" This place is full of the cheesiest folks you will ever meet. They pack the dance floor like sardines; really, really cheesy sardines dancing to horrid music. We reserved a rooftop cabana for our friend's birthday. Marie was friendly, accommodating, and made the entire process easy. The entire staff was great, making sure we had everything we needed to enjoy the night. They even made sure to bring drinks right at midnight to celebrate the birthday girl. So I am from Denver Colorado and I was here to celebrate my boys 23rd bday, I was a complete jackass and got my hat stuck up on a cabana, if this was any other hat I would've let it go but it was a family heirloom that was very expensive. I drove over an hour here last night to meet up with my cousin who was already inside celebrating her birthday. When I got to the door, the bouncer refused to even look at my ID. (I'm 29) When I asked to speak to the manager, his response was, "I am the manager." Extremely disappointed with the rude service/staff, and the waste of a drive to come to your establishment. I will start with the rooftop, am pretty sure my yelpers have already mentioned as it is one of the best things they have. Its open only when the weather is good ( Summer ) its gets really crowded on Friday and Saturday night. They use to have tables where you could sit and enjoy having a chat and a drink, but they converted that area into private tables. The first floor in winter gets really packed specially on Saturday, if am not mistaken they started giving bracelets on Friday nights for ladies I think before 11 PM and you get half priced drinks when you buy your drink all night long. Overall its good compared to other CLE night clubs. They have three small stages for ladies to dance on. Oh one more thing to add, if you happen to go down there while the CAVs, Indians, Ohio State playing it will be on the two big screens behind the bar. read more

Horrible treatment, crooked police. I was with my girlfriend and some friends, our first stop on an east coast road trip. St. Patrick's day after the parade we decided to stop in here. The bouncer let half of our group in, looked at me and my ID and said "this is fake". Obviously, being 29 at the time, I challenged it. He held onto my ID and threatened to call this van full of cops over to arrest kids with fake IDs, I said "go for it. call them". A police officer walked over 15 minutes later, looked at my ID and said it was fake as well. I told him to go scan it or run the numbers through, and the officer responded "if you tell me what to do once more, you're getting arrested!" Bottom line, you're not getting into this bar." I think they realized once I challenged them both that it wasn't fake, and they were too proud to admit they were wrong, so they reacted like jerks. We all left, never to go there again. Afterwards we realized we had our passports in my girlfriends purse, I wonder what they would have said to a federal document confirming my age. This place is the epitome of sketchy. Most of the other reviewers have hit it on the head. By all appearances it is home base for frequent wearers of Affliction t-shirts and the overweight, overexposed set. Unless you enjoy being creeped on by a man covered in a sheen of hair gel, sweat, and cologne take a pass on this place. You are also likely to run into card-carrying members of the AARP attempting to relive their youth. The worst part is, the drinks are ridiculously weak so you can't even get drunk and black it out. That being said, the place is at times tolerable in the summer months. The rooftop patio is great and the upstairs is slightly more tolerable than downstairs. We went on a weekend last August and had an okay time hanging out on the patio and couches upstairs. The music isn't bad, either.
