We checked out The Vierling for our brewery tour of the U.P. Since we were only going to be there once, we decided to split the flight given we would get to try all the beers they had on tap. I believe it was 13 beers and we paid $11 for it.... or maybe it was 11 beers and we paid $13. Either way, it was the best deal because we got a good size sample of every beer, yet didn't feel like it was too much beer. There were some beers we liked, some we didn't, and some that I enjoyed but my friend didn't, and vice versa. However, I didn't really love any of the beers. None of them sticks out or was very memorable. What I can say though is that the bread sticks are worth the trip. Hands down the best food I ate while in Marquette. When we walked in, I saw a server bringing cheese bread to a table, and it looked delicious. I asked our server what they ordered, and she pointed it out on the menu but then recommended we get the bread sticks instead. I was hesitant because the cheese bread looked so good, but we made the right decision to trust her. The bread was perfect and warm, and the dip you get with it was absolutely delicious. It makes me think that the rest of the food on the menu would be good. She was also a great server, so I think you can expect good service while you dine in on your visit. read more

My husband and I enjoyed the smoked white fish appetizer and an artisan pizza and it was great. My husband is a whitefish fan, while I am not necessarily, but the smoking made it quite good (IMHO). The pizza was very good - nice crisp crust and really good flavor. We totally enjoyed our experience here, the waitress was very attentive and informative. Would recommend. read more

I was a little nervous at first to come and dine here because of some of the reviews written lately. However we took the chance and made our way over for dinner. The atmosphere is beautiful! It reminds of the quaint little bars you'll find over in Ireland. We were seated immediately, being lead to a beautiful booth surrounded by hanging plants and cozy lighting. We ordered the smoked whitefish as an appetizer and it was presented beautifully. The fish was complimented with a dill spread that added to the smokey flavor. After our appetizer our main meal came. My boyfriend ordered the deli salad which was loaded with deli meats and hard boiled eggs. My pesto tortellini was served with the chowder soup and bread. It was so much food for a great price. Well as my wife and I travel across Michigan, we decided to stop at this restaurant an experience their food and atmosphere. We ordered a french soup, brie appetizer, salad, french onion soup, a pint of blonde ale, chicken picatta, grilled shrimp and key lime pie. The brie appetizer and french onion soup were EXCELLENT, however, the chicken picatta and grilled shrimp were virtually tasteless as were the green beans. The cocktail sauce that came with the grilled shrimp had no bite and in fact, had a sweet taste due to my guess to the catsup base. The green beans lacked any taste, boy some garlic, onion, and bacon would have surely enhanced their flavor. The key lime pie was EXCELLENT. Cassidy our wait person was very friendly and had several suggestions that we executed. For us a C+ at best. read more

We always visit the Vierling when in Marquette, especially on Friday's for their fish fry and nice selection of beers. They offered a White fish and Walleye, tough decision but we opted for the white fish. We got it fried and the breading was paper thin, not to take away from this done perfect, delicious fish. Probably the best white fish we'd ever had. Coleslaw was excellent, perfect amount of dressing. Service was spot on, attentive without being over whelming and they were crowded. The view form the dining room out over the harbor is to die for. Nice quiet establishment with a warm atmosphere and a delightful menu. Prices are reasonable with sandwich plates running around $10 and fuller meals running more $16-20. The wait staff is fast and professional, and I have never had anything other than an amazing time. Great for dates or small parties (3-4 people). One of my all time favorites for a lunch meal in town. I'd get a reservation for weekend evenings to be safe. read more

Unique finds! I ordered the Greek olive pita and my husband got the chicken caeser pizza. We were obsessed with both! Extreme flavor and the veggies were so fresh. In our last night in Marquette, we decided to go to this brewery. It was recommend by our hotel, so we went to give it a shot. The only nice thing about this place is the blueberry beer which is their best seller. The fools is quite tasteless compared to other options you have in the area. The worst of all things was the service. One of the people in our group asked our server if she could get her to change the French onion soup because it was too salty (almost impossible to eat) and the server's response was ok but I have been serving it all night! She would also answer other requests with: yeah I know! It's not my first day! And she brought the check quickly just to get us to leave... all and all not a pleasant experience... you have several better options in town. read more

I would give this Marquette gem a 4.5 star review. We have returned for a second lunch - really for the incredible whitefish bites, excellent salads and the nicest people on staff. This is my 4th it 5th time here. I normally have a great steak. Decided to have Chicken Picatta. I wasn't thrilled. The chicken was not great. I let them know & even tho I said I wasn't telling them this for a discount they gave me a free glass of wine. So thoughtful!! I have always had a great experience here & one not perfect night shouldn't tarnish the rest of the great meals I've had here. I would absolutely come back when I'm in town next time. I have dined here before and the food was decent, but this time, no one in my party liked their meal. My husband had a New York steak and said it tasted terrible. He was only eating it because he was so hungry. The green beans seemed from a bag of frozen veggies and his red potatoes were boiled with no seasoning or butter. My daughter had the cheese tortellini with pesto sauce. Hardly any pesto and very bland. I had the white fish piccata. Was also not seasoned well. The only food that was really good was the French onion soup and the creamy Parmesan noodles. The service was good. No complaints there. read more

The French Onion soup was delicious. That is why I didn't rate this only one star. However, the Chicken Marsala that I was so excited to order, was awful. The chicken had a rubbery texture that made it hard to cut and chew almost as if it had been microwaved. Furthermore there was slices of orange in it which was an odd combination. The plate came heaping with canned mushrooms (as well as the sauce) spilling all over the veggies and noodles. It didn't look appealing at all - in fact - it looked like slop. It wasn't worth 5.00 let alone the 20.00+ (bc I upgraded for the French onion soup.) Sad I had such a bad experience. Terrible birthday dinner meal. read more

A cold, rainy Saturday evening (after an NMU football game) was a perfect time to enjoy The Vierling. Our group of three was fortunate to be seated in the rear, with a great view of the Ore Dock, one of my favorite views to enjoy while in Marquette. We had been guided here for the whitefish and we were not disappointed. I chose the Whitefish Picatta-Style and being very hungry, ordered the "dinner," which included salad (or soup), vegetable, another side (potato, rice, or linguine), and French bread, for a nominal upcharge. The whitefish was delicious - and a very generous portion. Unfortunately, the salad was underwhelming (even with the housemade tarragon honey dressing). Nothing wrong with it, just nothing special in any way. The vegetable that evening was string beans, which were prepared simply and not overcooked, and I chose the linguine side (meh). Oddly, the slice of French bread that accompanied my dish was ridiculously stale. My companions each also chose whitefish dinners, one having the Cajun-style and one choosing Grilled. They opted for soup instead of salad and I believe made wise choices. The Whitefish Chowder was reportedly outstanding, as was the Black Bean (special soup for that evening). Our server was polite, friendly, and knowledgeable, and it was nice to be seated in the rear to be able to enjoy our conversations and the view. When back in Marquette, we'll definitely return for the whitefish. read more

Great location with views of Lake Superior. The service was on point but the food was so so. I had the ribs and they were very tough and not fall off the bone as you would expect. I think they were reheated. I should have ordered the whitefish as the plates passing by looked great. The whitefish chowder was excellent and my wife enjoyed her dinner as well. Without question The Vierling is one of Marquette's best restaurants. I love baked French onion soup and I've had it in restaurants all over the country and I swear I've never had a better BFO soup than the Vierling's. Anywhere. Paul Grant Pasta is so good too. Listen, I'm not from the Midwest and I don't mean to offend people that are. I'm a stuck-up East Coast snob - especially when it comes to food. Now that I've said that, by Midwest standards I would say that this place is a four star, but it gets reduced by a star just due to the culinary standard 'exchange rate' difference. I got the whitefish special. Whitefish is clearly quite the thing anyplace near the big lake. But for a coastal person such as myself, whitefish is a perfectly good fish for fish n' chips but not much else. It doesn't have much fish flavor on its own. So to give it flavor is is usually piled on, dredged through something, or smothered in sauce. I kind of went for all three at once. The whitefish special was topped with a 'paste' of crab and shrip 'something' (I know), then breaded, then fried, then served with a non descript sauce. Came with rice and a side of beans. The entire plate was really just a filling substance, not good, and not bad. But I think that is kind of a good synopsis of Midwestern food in general. Started with the French Onion Soup. I have to agree with the other reviewers - they really do a good one. Nothing like knowing how to melt lots of cheese into a broth.... read more

Overrated. While the atmosphere is cool and quaint, the food is nothing special. They made a big deal about the fries. However they are the same pre-made fries that any diner has. Same goes for the chips. What really soured it for me was our waitress. She was brusque and, for the most part, ignored us. While it was lunchtime busy, there was no need for her snappishness. Don't judge Marquette based on this restaurant! Marquette is pretty, but the food around here is pretty damn bad. Practically no choices or variety, which makes it hard if you're visiting. Should we have been surprised that there was a 45 minute wait for dinner on a Monday night? That was only the beginning of the disappointment that preceded the meal. Food was mediocre at best. We had the salmon burger, the whitefish chowder, the french onion soup, and the special of the day: stuffed whitefish. Bland, overpriced and overrated. The beer won the 2nd star for me. We tried the blueberry wheat and the peach wheat and they were GREAT. The only problem was when we got the bill and they charged us $1 each for the "sample" we asked for prior to ordering a beer. I've never been to a microbrew where they charged for a taste of the beer to see if we liked it. Definitely not worth the 45 minute wait. read more
