I was at the VIG the Friday before Halloween and this place was a blast. The cocktails and food were both really good. Because of the 'holiday' the place was packed, so service was attentive, but well... they were packed. Later in the evening, some tables toward the middle / back were cleared-out for dancing and live music. A great party scene - people in costumes, etc. I do recommend The VIG, what I don't know is whether that's *every* Friday & Saturday or pre-Halloween was a particularly awesome night. She had a few nearby suggestions for lunch, and we decided to head off to the nearby VIG in Chicago's Old Town. Despite the busy lunch hour, we were able to find an outdoor seat, and quickly got to work scouring the menu. I couldn't decide between the Vivo Milanese Salad and the Moroccan Turkey Burger, so we decided to each order one and then split. If you're lucky enough to be dining with someone who swill share like that, then I suggest you do the same. Hitting all the marks for temperature, flavor, and portion size, the Moroccan Turkey Burger was satisfying and felt somewhat virtuous since it was turkey and not beef. The Vivo Milanese chicken breast was flavorful and cooked perfectly (ie, not too dry), ans covered with fresh spinach and tomatoes and topped with a generous grating of fresh Parmesan. I came in here as a group on four in a Friday night bc we had tickets to something and I wanted somewhere where we wouldn't have to move cars. The location is great and there's a parking lot across the street but I think that was about it for me. The music was extremely loud and we had to yell talk the whole time. The drinks were just ok, I tried two and they were too sweet for me. 3 of us ordered the steak and one ordered the meatball sandwich. It was ok but not a whole lot of flavor and I ordered mine medium rare and it came out medium. I think this would a good spot for happy hour when its nice out but not for a dinner. Lots of fun and entertainment going on in there, and yet the wait staff is very attentive and always seems to be around when you need them. The last time I went, I wanted to go the very next day. My wife and I went here to get some brunch and pre game a catholic wedding ceremony. I started with an aperol spritz and ended up having a second, they were light and easy to sip. My wife ordered the salmon board and it was enough to feed 2-3 easily. I got the brisket hash which had bacon, crispy potatoes, a fried egg on top and some hollandaise. I've had two wonderful experiences here! The first time, the original plan was to go to another restaurant on the same busy stretch of Wells but they had a super long wait. Enter The VIG, which had a high top table available in front of their huge open windows, giving you the lovely sunshine-y feeling of patio seating but with some nice AC blowing behind you. The drink menu has LOTS of fun options, everything from frosé to smoky mezcal cocktails can be found here, plus a huge selection of whiskey and bourbon. The service is wonderful and friendly; they have great recommendations and specials. On my second visit, the chicken on my salad was a little undercooked and they replaced it without a word plus a manager apologized. I'd still recommend the Milanesa chicken on any of their salads without hesitation though, it's so tasty! There's lots of places in Old Town but I really love the atmosphere here and will definitely be back. read more

So this review is for a carryout order. We have been to the Vig before but not for a long time and decided on some carry out. We called 5 times to place the order but never got thru to anyone. We drove by to see if the place was closed and it wasn't so the wife jumped out and went inside and placed the order.... The process was fairly ugly tho she had to go in and explain that she wanted to place a to go order which seemed not that common and then she was sent to the bar area and had to wait for a bartender to take the order and then after paying was told it would be at the front once ready. Not sure how much carryout they are doing but simple solution... just answer the carryout line or let the host stand take orders! The only reason this review is 3 stars is that the carryout was packaged very nicely and they even threw in 4 beverage cozies. I went with a few friends for brunch one day and we got the large mimosa tower. If you're doing it for the gram, go for it because its kinda fun. However, I did watch the bartender making another one and its honestly not the best quality ingredients. I ordered the avocado toast in order to soak up the orange beast and I loved the toast. My friends had a breakfast sandwich and a summer berry salad both looked BOMB. We also split some of the potatoes and those were decent. Overall, food was good, but the mimosa tower was okay. The food: get the spreads! There's a variety of spread options to choose from & it's fun to share with your table. The mozzarella meatball surprised me. I thought it was better than your average meatball and had a yummy sharp cheese flavor. The one thing I wouldn't get again is the whipped cauliflower because the texture reminded me and my friend too much of baby food?? Beware of a few extra fees they'll tack onto your bill that wasn't noticed until after the fact. Another thing to note is if you come with a group of 5 or more, it'll be hard to hear everyone because it gets really loud in the evening/night. 10/10 3 cheese spread is a must... We got the artichoke kale, brie date spicy apricot and the spicy feta. The bread it came with is sooooo yummy forget about the cucumbers the offer you. Seared salmon with the thai butter had me drooling. The brussels it came over were crispy with the perfect crunch to them. The mexicali vegan torta was sooo flavorful and tasted amazing as well. My drink was superb and that says a lot for a girl who doesn't like gin (I got the Kelly's Been Patient). Okay, so like any good Yelper, I went through and checked out the reviews. I'm too old to get bullied on the internet and have read the hysterical (and probably accurate) responses from the owner regarding less than stellar reviews. So, The Vig is getting a 5 star review, with the hope this stays off his radar. Visited here on a lazy Sunday, as I've heard that the Hip Hop brunch was pretty fun. What I didnt know what that this was the same weekend as the Wells Street Art Fair. Which means this was wall to wall douchebags and entitled 21 year old "influencers". I did get carded at the door, which shoulda been my first clue, but hey - at least the door guy wasn't like, "enjoy brunch, grandma". I was quickly disappointed that due to the crowd, they were serving all cocktails out of soft plastic cups. I found this extremely laughable as we sat in a high top across the bar next to a chalk picture of a turtle begging people to not use straws. I asked our server, Samantha, if it was possible to get a real glass. She said it wasn't. Like, she's just doing her job, but with double digit priced cocktails, I should absolutely not feel like I'm in a college bar or frat party. I thought it was unsustainable, frankly rude, and disrespectful to not only my cocktail but to my money as well. Regardless of this little hiccup, it was awesome to watch the staff. They were all about teamwork; running food, bussing tables, and checking on us. The food was really good. I had the chia overnight oats pot, which not only was adorable, but shockingly filling. Samantha was super nice, really efficient and fun. She obviously was super busy, but never seemed frazzled or put out. We were seated quickly on the busy street before attending a show at Second City. The staff were very friendly. I had the frose which was beautiful, delicious and strong. The pan seared salmon was perfectly cooked not dry at all and the thai butter sauce it was served in was quite tasty. It was also served over a few Brussel sprouts. Highly highly recommend The VIG!! Went here with some girlfriends and we had a fantastic time. For the quick version: their cocktails are great, they have super nice indoor and outdoor seating, the pan-seared salmon is a must-try, and it can get pretty loud indoors, so stay away if that's not your scene. For the longer version: my group of three made reservations for a late lunch on a Sunday. Finding street parking around there was challenging, but we managed to do it. If you don't want to deal with that, there are a few lots around, they're just more expensive than street parking. We ended up running a little late because of that, but after calling to let them know, it was all okay. They have quite a few drink options, and I really appreciated that they had some alcohol free options, like the Innocent in Ixtapa drink I ordered. One of my friends ordered their hibiscus margarita and really enjoyed it. I think I liked hers more than I liked mine, but mine was still good lol. To eat, I got the pan-seared salmon (thanks to all who recommended it in their Yelp reviews!), one friend got the vegan Mexican torta, and my other friend got their burger. We also ordered a side of fries and of pimento mac & cheese to share. To start with the bad, the place was really loud. We got seated by a speaker and I have no idea why the music had to be blasting so loud in the afternoon lol. Maybe this wouldn't be an issue seated elsewhere but it was unfortunate since we had to holler at each other the whole time. Also, the pimento mac was a total bust. Not good at all. We each tried it and left the rest. Would not recommend. Now, onto the good! The pan-seared salmon was to die for! SO DELICIOUS!! The Thai butter was truly magnificent and the brussel sprouts with crispy shallots were the perfect complement. Highly recommend, like many others do. I also enjoyed dipping the fries in the sauce so I liked having them on the side. My friend said the torta was really good and enjoyable, and I appreciated that they even had a non-salad vegan option on their menu. I tried my other friend's burger and YUM! So tasty! Overall, we had a great time and I plan to be back in the future! It's probably more of a 4.5 rounded up than a true 5 stars, but who cares, good is good! read more

Had a very enjoyable dinner here on Friday night. Super glad we made reservations because it was packed! And it's a big space. I would describe the vibe as elevated sports bar. There are lots of tvs if you're looking to catch a game, but the food and drink are better than your average sports bar. I got the Kelly Black'd Out cocktail to start and then moved to the Buzzy Dice. Both were good. For food, I ordered the fried chicken sandwich ($12) which was quite delicious but didn't come with any sides. However I did feel overall price for quality was pretty fair. Pretty disappointed in this place. I think I got the wrong vibe from the pics because I definitely thought I was going to be a quieter, fancier vibe but it is definitely a bar vibe. Was here on a sat night around 9pm and there are a ton of tvs playing music/sports. The lobster roll was a huge disappointment: it definitely had a lot of meat but it was a cold one which I just can't get on board with. The bao buns (brisket and chicken) were both just ok. I will say that the side of Brussel sprouts was one of the best Brussel sprouts I've had. That was very good. Got a couple cocktails that were eh as well. Won't be back unfortunately.
