The Walrus had a great vibe, comfortable seating for 8 of us and good appetizers. If you're a beer aficionado, they have a huge variety of beers on tap. Most of our party ordered beers but I asked for a glass of Sangria and although it is not on the menu, they gladly mixed one up for me. They we cheerfully accommodating and I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome. My Sangria was made with with a white wine and was very light and fruity. We had to try the fried deviled eggs. We ordered two plates so there was enough to go around and they did not disappoint. Breaded and served with a Chipotle sauce it was quite a treat. We also had a nacho plate at the table. They have sidewalk seating but no awning so when the rain started all of those patrons rushed inside looking for dry seats. I was impressed to find that they had recently opened bc the operation seemed very smooth on a busy Saturday afternoon. When the waitress couldn't answer our question she promptly brought someone who could. It was a little slow getting checks but I'll chalk that up to The Walrus having just opened and their staff still getting into the groove. No complaints here. I've been wanting to stop in but haven't had the time. Finally went for dinner tonight. It was ok. Many beers from which to choose. That's a plus. Vegetarian options, that's a plus. Friendly service, another plus. Great location and garage doors to get fresh air - fantastic. But the food? It was just ok. It looked better in writing than it actually tasted (I'm a fan of The Tavern, so maybe my expectations were too high?) We got the fried goat cheese and marinara (now that I think about it, it was supposed to have fried basil and didn't). It was pretty good, but nothing to rave about. For my meal i had the sweet potato tacos. They were overwhelmingly sweet and didn't have much else to offer. Could have used a sauce or something. Also, the cubes of sweet potatoes made it almost impossible to wrangle. Wedges would have been better. I noticed the girl next to me got the tacos as well and didn't eat hers either. You know, sometimes you go to a restaurant and eat a dish and just know that you're going to end up craving it at odd times, sending you rushing to that restaurant at a moment's notice? That's how I felt tonight at the much-discussed Walrus, on my first visit, when I ate a dish of their cauliflower mash. I had ordered it as a substitute for fries with my chicken salad, but I ended up just wanting a big bowl of it. Not that the chicken salad wasn't delicious, because it was. But yummmm, cauliflower. The restaurant, located at a prime spot on Main Street, is pleasantly minimalist on the inside. I found it unusually spacious. Most restaurants are packed with many tables as possible, but The Walrus incorporates large swathes of empty floorspace, with a front dining room and a bar in the back with a live music space (and a pool table!) where tonight there was a lovely jazz quartet playing. There were a lot of comfortable, secluded seating areas. The menu had a lot of interesting items. My dinner companion had the deep-fried deviled eggs (I knooooow) and I tried half of one. It was super delicious but I'm pretty glad that I only ate half. Good drink selection and cocktails. I will look forward to going back. read more

I heard about their deviled eggs so I had bookmarked to stop by, and it was worth it. The Walrus is hard to miss, there's a huge sign on the side of the building with plenty of street parking all around and a patio as well. The service is great, waiter gave some good suggestions. The pricing was pretty fair, what I expected for the amount of food we got. We ordered the deep fried deviled eggs, the big rig burger and the sweet potato tacos. The eggs were delicious, they were wrapped in bacon and went great with the chipotle mayo sauce. The Big Rig burger was cooked medium well, came out like I wanted. It was definitely filling, it came with some fries which were amazing. I usually expect regular steak cut fries but these weren't the usual cut fries, they were a lot better. The sweet potato tacos weren't as good in my opinion, there wasn't much meat it was the vegetarian option I guess. So if you're looking for a vegetarian dish, then you will enjoy. Unbelievable fare. The atmosphere is great with music that isnt too loud. The menu is incredibly appetizing. We had the goat cheese and marinara and the portobello fries. Both were incredible and the fries came with an amazing sauce. My wife had the burger and it was perfectly cooked and dressed. I had the hot pastrami. I can't stress how good this sandwich was. It easily rocketed into my top 3 sandwiches in columbus. I feel embarrassed that it took us so long to get to the Walrus but glad we finally did. 5 stars without a doubt! Get here asap read more

Great drinks, great food (try the lobster pierogies! and the pimento burger!), and friendly service! I love this place! Keep in mind, it is a restaurant, but I think has more of a bar vibe. This place was LOUD on a Saturday around 6p. The Walrus was slammed with people, and the music was blaring. I literally had to yell to talk to my friend next to me. But...it was a fun, cool place! Great drink selection, delicious food, lovely ambiance, prompt service. I came to watch the Ohio State, Penn State game with some friends who've been here before and recommended it. We came for dinner and stayed for the game. There were plenty if TVs so even though it's not a sports bar per say, there are TVs on every wall so would come again to watch a game. It wasn't crowded so we weren't elbow to ass hole trying to go to the bathroom. The crowd is fun but not raucous. I love the exposed brick wall, Edison bulbs, and chandeliers. I had the lobster Mac, my husband had the cauliflower steak with wasabi home fries. We shared the lobster perogies and bourbon wings at the table. There was nothing I didn't like. It was a lobster rich meal and who could complain about that? I would recommend the lobster mac the most. It was rich and creamy, flavorful and decadent. I was drinking martinis but I thought the beer selection looked extensive. I will come back again. I enjoyed it very much. read more

I struggled to rate the Walrus. I think this is 3.5 stars... rounded up... The space is great. Comfy seating, patio, big bar. It is actually much bigger than it seems from the street. The staff was friendly and there were plenty of servers. New openings sometimes feel understaffed, or staffed with folks who don't know what they're doing. This definitely WASN'T the case at the Walrus. Everyone was on their game. They have a healthy beer and cocktail menu, and I had their tequila drink (don't remember the name). Short but strong... like I like 'em. I was hungry for an app when I got there, but after staring at the menu, none of the options did it for me. It would be helpful if the menu marked Vegan, Veggie, Gluten Free, etc. options to help folks understand what they are getting into. I'm glad to see this place open up and may stop back for a salad or burger sometime. read more

I'm hoping to visit a few more times and bump up my rating. As of now, I feel like this place is just okay. I went here on a Tuesday night with a big happy hour group - like 15+ people. This is definitely a big enough space to accommodate a large group, and our server did a pretty good job of staying on top of everyone's orders. She got all of our checks right at the end of the night, so kudos to her! I like that there seems to be a mix of different areas; an area with open tables, a bar area, a stage area, and a small patio! The happy hour prices are great for drafts, as they are half off. There is also $1 off of wine. Their mixed drink menu seems fairly priced, as some of the cocktails are as low as $6. It would have been nice to have had some discounted small plates on the happy hour menu as well. Where I am hesitant to give a higher score is in regards to the food. Perhaps I just ordered the wrong item, but my sandwich was underwhelming. They have tasty french fries, but the candied bacon grilled cheese fell flat for me. I didn't really taste anything special about the bacon, and ultimately I wish I would have picked something less greasy. One of my friends had the sweet potato tacos, and said they were a bit dry. My fiance had the veggie burger, and it looked more like a sloppy joe than a patty. He thought it tasted fine, but it was lacking in structure and presentation for sure. I'm willing to give it another shot and try something different here for food, as I do like the venue and location. I hope to come back again and add another star! read more

The first time we meet, I ran screaming (metaphorically) in the other direction. It was a Friday night. It was raining. You were packed to the gills with hipsters and confused suburbanites. I couldn't hear a word. The hostess actually rolled her eyes when she saw more people come in. So after an obligatory lap around the bar, we texted the people we were supposed to meet and begged them to relocate. The second time we meet, I didn't want to go and you didn't remember my name. OMG I LOVE THIS PLACE. To be fair I'm a huge Tavern fan. They are just awesome people and the staff is really great and friendly. Here...same thing. The space is really big, kind of like The Tavern on steroids. Very open. Very inviting. And the food.... Deep fried deviled eggs. Really? Yes, really. And bacon wrapped as if the deep fried wasn't good enough. Awesome. Lobster Mac and Cheese...as great as it sound...no wait...better. Those are the only two things we tried as we had already eaten. If these two dishes are barometer of the food...I'm all in. And the prices are super reasonable. Right downtown, great space, GREAT staff just like The Tavern. I've given this place a try 3 times, but after two lack luster experiences I had to post. First time I went and got the lobster mac n cheese. it was quite good, and I'd recommend it. Second time I went back for dinner. I ordered the crab cake sliders and was very disappointed. Bland tasting, The carrot slaw on top was just mush and did nothing to ad to the dish except give it a funny and unbalanced taste. My girlfriend ordered the maple burger, which she enjoyed until we located a hair in her food. Gave it another try today since my coworkers wanted it for lunch. I got the breaded chicken sandwich which was beyond disappointing to say the least. The sauce that coats the chicken had no heat, and the chicken was so thin there was barely anything to it. The combination of avocado and ranch on top was way to much. Could barely taste the sauce. I want to like this place because their happy hour prices are awesome, and it's a neat layout, but I feel the menu definitely needs some work. I came here hoping to try the Yellow Matter Custard or the Eggman Sandwich. Alas, they weren't on the menu. So much for being the Walrus, goo goo g' joob. The Walrus is located in a great space. On a nice summer day, they open up the entire front and the whole dining area feels breezy and fresh. Of course I passed all that up and worked my way past the pool table to the darkened bar (located by the stage, for live entertainment). The menu certainly has some interesting items. I opted for the Chicken Salad sandwich, which includes bacon, bleu cheese, grapes and cashews. While the chicken salad itself was deelish, the thick, dense, toasted focaccia really muted all of the flavors (and made it a bit unwieldy, with a lot of the salad falling off with every bite). The side o'fries was nice and crispy, but over-salted. All in all, I enjoyed the Walrus and will definitely be back. read more

Walrus is a super cool bar tucked away outside of the normal busy Short North or Brewery District. The inside is HUGE, I was there on a Sunday afternoon and nearl had the place to myself, I love the decor, seems to be a dance floor in there as well but that is not a substantiated claim. The bar is bountiful and offers many Ohio beers (both on draft and in bottle/can), I much prefer a bar that provides local brews and the deliver! I didn't eat - so I can not comment on the food, but go for the drinks, the bartender will keep them coming all afternoon! read more

Holy Short Rib Sliders. Nom nom nom nom nom. Just spent a few days on the road for a work trip and I think I'm going to have dreams about those bad boys. So good. We ate a lot of good food on this trip, but those stick out as the best thing that we ate - hands down. Walked into this place on Tuesday night. It is a really cool atmosphere. Split down the middle by a wall, it's half bar/restaurant, half game area. Very cool decor. It's hip/chic without being stuffy or limiting itself to a specific demographic. Really feel like just about anyone could walk into this place and feel comfortable sitting down for a meal and a couple beers. My co-worker and I ponied up to the bar and were immediately given a food menu and beer list. The beer list was extensive and offered several local and national craft beer options. A quick glance behind the bar seemed to display a pretty decent liquor selection as well. We decided on a couple beers and split the baked wings as an appetizer. The baked wings were really good. If I come back, I might ask for them well done as they were just a tad under where I like the texture for my wings. Overall, really good. The bartender said the Bourbon BBQ was probably the most popular sauce, so that's what we went with and we were not disappointed. We asked the bartender again what her three favorite things on the menu were. I think she came back with the short rib sliders, the lobster roll, and one other dish. I was already eye-balling the short rib sliders, so that solidified that choice for me. They came out with three pretzel roll short rib sliders. I think the pretzel roll had a little bit of butter on it. For being a "slider" the portion of short rib on each slider was not lacking at all. Throw in the mayo-ish sauce that they throw you on the side and you've got yourself a killer sandwich. They're a bit rich and a bit heavy, so we didn't make it through all three. I'm no slouch of an eater, but I didn't want to walk out of this place uncomfortably full, so we boxed up the third with hopes that it would be a late night snack (that never came to fruition). They had trivia in there on Tuesday while we were in there. The host was really engaging and it was a bit different from the other formats that I've seen in the past. It moved pretty quick and there weren't any noticeable lags in the game. Definitely a good way to stay entertained during dinner. read more

I met my fiance for lunch since it is a short walk from his office. It was a beautiful later summer/early fall day and I was very pleased to see that they had all the doors open so we could enjoy the day. The service was quite good. Our server was attentive but not clingy and he left us alone when we were full-steam in on a conversation. The food was quite good. I had the hot pastrami sandwich. It's a take on the classic reuben. The Walrus version is pretty tasty; the bread held up the filling and dress really well and the pastrami was lean. The star of my plate, however, was the french fries. They were so crispy! Overall, I enjoyed my visit here. I am dinging them one star for some construction/repair work that was going on during lunch service. It was pretty loud. I expect to go back and adjust the rating accordingly. read more

I've experienced two sides of the Walrus. At exactly 11:02 am, I stepped in as a FIRST TIMER to have a lunch with a friend who was running late for couple of minutes. As the FIRST customer of the day, nobody welcomed me. Instead, one of the guys gave me the "look" which kind of felt like what the hell I am doing there that early. Then, the hostess took me to the small table in the corner as if the whole place was packed. When I kindly asked for another table, her reply was "I would like to keep those table open for big parties" as if all the tables would be filled within next 30 minutes. Even if that's the case, the small table should be your last option to seat people, definitely not first choice for your first customers. (She simply didn't know the value and power that a customer possesses. A customer can be a continuous revenue generator and "very effective" advertising method to increase sales if used correctly.) Anyways, she changed our table after I made a sarcastic comment of "You are planning to fill the whole place at 11:00 AM?!...". Then the waitress came to serve us with a beautiful and genuine smile on her face. Everything after that was OK. The food was decent and worth another try. Will I give it another chance? The food was not out of this world and worthy of, as the soups of the "Soup Guy" in Seinfeld, to take the risk of dealing with the same hostess. However, if I do revisit, I will post another review. Here are two quick questions for The Walrus employees/owners though: Have I become an effective marketing tool to increase sales? Am I a continuous revenue generator for The Walrus? We were in the mood for a casual dinner out, and decided to pop into the Walrus. The atmosphere is awesome and chill. The space seems to cater to whatever you're in the mood for: bar mingling, sit-down restaurant, group gathering, outdoor drinking, music venue, ping pong / pool tables... Also, I really really like their logo/t-shirts: walrus with mustache and monocle. Food-wise -- the lobster pierogies! It's like lobster, tender dumpling dough, corn chowder all in one. Delicious, and filling. It's an appetizer, but works as a meal. My man got a cheeseburger with candied bacon, yummm. I would definitely be interested to try their candied bacon grilled cheese. A new place in an up and coming part of town at Main and 4th. Went for happy hour and could not have been happier with the amount of space this place has. It's HUGE! We brought our happy hour club here and it was more than accommodating. You will walk through their garage door in the front to their restaurant area. Towards the back is the bar and a live music stage. Now, I don't really enjoy live music (unless I'm really into the band) but if you're into it, you might want to try this place out. The food was just okay from what I heard from friends. I had a veggie flat bread and it was delicious. I was not super impressed by their drink selections but they have a solid draft selection and they're half off for happy hour. I had a lemon mule which was not the best but maybe it's just not my taste. No food specials though. Our server was great since we had a huge group. Everyone was really friendly and knew what they were talking about regarding the menu. I'll probably be back since this area is exploding with new places. I went to the Walrus tonight on a double date. Things started out well: The drinks were good. I had a Moscow mule, and I don't know what everyone else had because we had a few cocktails at El Camino and 16-Bit. Anyway, the menu looks great. I got the lobster roll and cauliflower mash, and both were excellent. My boyfriend and friend got the steak sandwich and fries, and another friend got the hot pastrami sandwich, and all of these things were cold. When we told the server, she told the owner, and he resolved the problem in a very professional way. We are willing to give the place a bit of leeway because it just opened and I love OTT, and I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, but I'm rounding up based on OTT and the potential of the place. If I could give 0 stars I really would! First of all, I arrived before my friends at 11:15 am and was seated and notified them there would be 6 people in total. The server did not check in frequently as the rest of the party arrived, and all we were asking for was waters until we all got here so it wasn't even a difficult request. Once we all got there, we sat and talked for about 30 minutes and finally asked the server if we were able to place a food order, to which she responded to wait another second. So we did. She came back, took our order and then came back a LONG time later to basically say she couldn't accommodate my friends allergies and that they were out of candied bacon, which is the main ingredient in a lot of their meals and we had ordered it as a side. So we all had to refigure our order out and we had already been there at least 45 minutes going on an hour. So we decided to order a bottle of champagne and the server took over 30 minutes to bring it, we had to ask multiple times and even had to ask the manager and another server and they still refused to bring it because "the bar had to serve it" even tho we were at a table. We expressed all of our concerns to the manager, and after he told the server; she came back out with an attitude and was storming around our table, still ignoring us. We went to the bar and asked for champagne glasses for our champagne that had FINALLY came but with dirty glasses, we were told that they would not have that conversation with us at the bar and would come to our table. And did not come. We ended up having to walk out after sitting for over 90 minutes and begging for service and still never eating. read more

We had been looking forward to trying The Walrus. The menu sounded great. The vibe of the place is good. The beer selection is good...BUT... I've been twice now, but only actually got a table once. The first time we went was a weeknight, there was no one waiting, so we put our names in. We were told something like 20-30 minutes. That time came and went, and about 45 minutes later, and still no space in the main dining area, they offered us at a table back by the bar directly in front of the speakers of the band that was playing. We were more than irritated, so we just left. The second time was this past weekend. We drove by, no one waiting, and plenty of open tables. We were really excited to finally try it! We went in and they told us it would be about 45 minutes. Again. The hostess advised us that they take reservations, and that's why there were all the open tables. That's fine, I can live with that. After about 40 minutes, there were still open tables. We had a party of 7, so we tried to be patient. The tables that were occupied were mainly just people loitering. Leftovers boxed up, not ordering drinks, just being inconsiderate of anyone else that may want to get a seat. SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, STOP DOING THIS! If you're going to sit around and take up space, at least order some beers/drinks. This is no fault of the restaurant. After about 75 minutes, we were finally able to get a seat. As mentioned previously, they've got a great beer selection and decent drink menu. The food menu sounded amazing. We were all anxious to finally get some food! We ordered the deep fried deviled eggs, and they were pretty tasty. However, at $8, getting 3 was pretty disappointing. Not to mention awkward AF when sharing. I had the lobster mac & cheese, my wife had the lobster rolls, friends had the sweet potato tacos & the short ribs. The lobster mac was a huge disappointment. It was very bland, the lobster was overcooked and pretty fishy tasting. The lobster rolls were just OK, at best. My friends with the sweet potato tacos said they were bland as well.
