This was the second place I went to get my watch fixed. The first place in Rockville ended up taking about 4 months, and that was for a "consultation" to get a battery replaced & a cleaning at the cost of $125. After I declined their offer I went to The Watch Pocket. Matthew worked on the watch while I observed and he educated me on a few things: on the watch itself, the fact that it did not need "cleaning", the ease of simply replacing a broken piece, options for replacing a watch band & modifying it for my thin wrist, most importantly & impressively, his story behind The Watch Pocket (just ask him). I spotted the sign for this out-of-the way shop while at the nearby Starbucks, and as I had decided to buy my wife a watch for our anniversary, I gave it a try. Boy, am I glad I did! Nifty little watch repair and jewelry store tucked away in the back of the shopping center. If you like personal one on one service that is not the big box store experience this is for you. It's basically a one man operation but Matt does give you his attention while he's serving you. Yes, it might take a minute for him to finish up with his previous customer but once you have his attention he is very service oriented. He knows his stuff as well. My wife and I took in five watches in various needs of repair. He told us which were worth repairing, which weren't, and completed the work quickly. He also has a good selection of custom jewelry that he has made himself. I particularly liked his pieces made from various watch and clock parts. Stop in and check it out. Oh, one last thing. I really like that he has a great lay-a-way policy. Basically put down what you wish, pay something each month, basically take as long as you like. I went to Watch Pocket for the minor matter of having the batteries changed in a couple of watches. But, as is often true for jewelry and watches, the items had great sentimental value to me. So, I was happy to have them handled professionally and promptly at a business with such a great reputation. And the price was reasonable. It was a little tricky to find the place as the entrance is not on the front of this small strip mall. And the owner, by his tone in responding to my telephoned request for directions, was clear that he has lost patience with giving them! My husband and I have engaged the services of The Watch Pocket for the last ten years, to maintain and repair our antique wall clock and anniversary clock. They are superb. We had tried several other businesses in the area before we found The Watch Pocket, and those did not do nearly as good a job. I had two mantle clocks, one old and one very old, that were not working properly. A shop owner in Kensington Antique Alley suggested I take my beloved timepiece to The Watch Pocket. I agree with other reviewers in saying STOP going anywhere else. this *is the place to go. The owners are honest and communicate brilliantly about the insides of timepieces. They fellow who is the expert show maker there explained why my two clocks weren't keeping time correctly, make some tiny adjustments, educated me on how to keep them running properly and sent me on my way without charging me a penny. I went to The Watch Pocket not intending to have all three of my watches fixed right on the spot, but that's what happened! Two repair-specific places had already turned down a band repair on a sentimental watch, but now it's fixed along with my other two that just needed batteries. Was in need of a battery for a couple of "dinosaur" watches and Matthew had the batteries in stock, replaced them and all is good. My biggest mistake was to go to this local shop to get a clock repaired-- hoping to support a longtime Silver Spring business. I took a small clock, which was a graduate school award, to have the clock insert replaced. After 3 weeks, I picked up the "repaired" clock. There was no back cover over the mechanism. I was told, "No one's going to look at the back." I asked for an educator's discount after being given the ridiculous price of $65. Get this: "Frankly, $65 IS your educator's discount. If I had know it was going to be this much trouble..." The trouble was getting a clock insert and glueing a ring of cardboard around the inside of the frame to secure the clock insert-- which was NOT secure and easily removable as I walked to my car. There were also glue stains around the face of the clock in front. Someone IS going to see the front. What an insult to customers, academicians and educators. I will never return and will recommend that others turn around before entering this establishment. I hear there is a wonderful clock repair shop in Kensington. I bet they care more about customers and clocks than The Watch Pocket. read more

Totally ruined. I had saved my father's watch for over 20 years after he died for just one reason--- to give it to my brother on his wedding day. I brought the watch in to have it fixed because it had been over-wound. The cost was a little over a hundred dollars. The problem is that unbeknownst to me and without my permission they replaced the original wrist band. Since I was out of town my mother picked up the watch; if I had been there I would have noticed immediately and demanded it be changed back. Unfortunately, it was not until just before the wedding that I saw the "fixed" watch. Instead of the wonderful, worn, family heirloom, my brother got a shiny generic watch. I will NEVER return to that store and I strongly recommend that a customer think twice before trusting them with anything of sentimental value. read more

Walked in for a battery replacement for my watch and a new leather band. The owner did not address me directly once because he was chatting with a friend. Perhaps because I am a woman? When it came time to select a watch band (pricy one), he did not hear me at all and forced one that was too small on me, insisting it was fine. I went out for errands with a bag full of broken items - 2 clocks, a watch, and two necklaces with more sentimental value than monetary value. The owner - the son of the founder - went over each item and told me the value and compared that with how much it would cost to fix each. We decided one clock was cheaper to replace, but I left all the other items. They were fixed quickly, and for the price he quoted. This was over a year ago, and they are all going strong. I've been to The Watch Pocket twice now, once for a battery replacement and once for a new wristband. The owners of this shop are fantastic! They are very nice, very helpful, and very honest. Gave me advice on how to fix or care for my watches for free even when they were unable to assist. Also, watching their expertly deft hands replace batteries, change bands, and repair watches is an incredible sight to see. Watchmaking is sadly and truly an art form that I fear is dying. Great experience at the Watch Pocket. I brought two watches to the shop, one that needed its battery changed, the other had an ominous rattle. I arrived shortly after the shop opened, and the store owner saw me immediately. He efficiently and carefully changed out the battery on the first watch, and tended to the other (turned out it just needed the loose battery replaced). He also advised me on future watch purchases and recommended his favored brands. The charge was for two battery replacements, $20 in total. I sent my daughter here thinking that this was a great little place. She had a Timex watch that needed a few links taken out of the stretch band. She was told that that was not possible to do and that they were one-size-fit-all disposable watch bands. Then she was encouraged to buy a new watch band. I told her that I would take it to the place I know in Kensington where they did the work immediately while I waited. I went there to get a new battery on my Sean John bracelet silver tone quartz watch because the other place I went to get had one that was used for only 2 weeks. Now, this battery I have in my watch now from the Watch Pocket is still useless. Whenever time stops after a minute or couple hours, I tried to tap the watch hardly so that it is still active. Yet, the battery that the watch repair man gave me is still active, but with unknown flaws inside the mechanism. I recommend to never come back at all. They do a good job with replacing the used battery with a new one, but I feel like this watch or the store I went recently is the pits. I couldn't be happier with the quick and friendly service here. I have a Skagen watch, which apparently are notorious for being harder to access the battery, and my particular model had an unusual design that made it even more difficult. I took it here, and in less than ten minutes they carefully had it apart, replaced the battery, popped it back together, and gave it a quick polish... all for just $10! (I've been to other places that charge upwards of $15-$25 for this otherwise simple service.) I later went back with another watch whose seemingly simple battery replacement (that I did myself) left me with a back that I just couldn't snap back on, and they gave me the same courteous experience as before. With such a great price and service, I won't be fooling with this stuff myself anymore.
