I spent part of a weekend in Conroe and was looking for a good brunch place on Sunday before heading back to Houston. The Whistle Stop Cafe came up on Yelp so I stopped by. Located next to train tracks, if the name didn't give it away, Whistle Stop is a casual, Southern restaurant. They're in a shopping center so parking won't be a problem. After being seated at a booth, I started off with a sweet tea. What's nice is that you can order both breakfast and lunch items at brunch. I went the breakfast route and ordered their chicken fried steak and eggs entree. Which in reality is a nice fusion on breakfast and lunch. The chicken fried steak is one of their most popular items, and one of my personal favorites, so I couldn't pass it up. I ordered my CFS with white gravy on the side and sunny side up eggs. Along with that, the dish also came with hash browns and toast. Overall, this was a solid dish and large enough that I took half of it home. So, I gave a Sunday morning breakfast tradition w/ my husband & our friend. Our previous long time meeting spot let us dune twice in a row, so she suggested this place. It is very small & unassuming from the outside. Inside is cozy, but not uncomfortably packed. The tables are spaced perfectly. While I won't be having the pancakes or waffles again (they were too dense for myself & my husband), the chicken alone is worth the drive. The coffee is fresh. We stayed about 3 hours (catching up on our week). Our waitress couldn't have been better. YeNETTA is fast, efficient, friendly, helpful, & cheerful w/o looming. Food was decent. Mostly tasteless. But mostly, I found the restaurant to be very dirty. Carpet in restaurants- no good. My sandals kept sticking to the carpet when I walked. I assume it was syrup. The bathroom looked recently remodeled, but was extremely dirty. There was a piece of lettuce on the ground as I walked into bathroom. Lastly, the service was sub par. The restaurant seemed like it was run by a bunch on teens that were more interested in hanging out with each other rather than earning a pay check. I didn't see much adult supervision. read more

The male manager here ruined my experience. He was gossiping loudly about a waitress then proceeded to reprimand her unjustly. The carpets are so sticky it seems they clean them with syrup. I've given this place two chances and will never return. There are much better and cleaner restaurant options nearby. Food is mediocre, atmosphere is abysmal. You're better off just driving by this place and going to Grand Central or any restaurant in The Woodlands area. read more

Food: I ordered the conductor, the eggs were cooked perfectly as I ordered over easy. Perfection! The hash browns are cooked till they are a good crispy texture. I'm very impressed with this place. Steak and eggs for me, breakfast bowl for the Mrs. The steak was cooked perfectly and tasted better than your local steakhouse. We stopped in on a rainy Thursday night because my husband saw the chicken fried steak on the yelp menu and was completely sold. He ordered it, along with mashed potatoes, gravy, and fried okra. Huge bonus points, the okra was cooked to perfection and not greasy at all. He loved the chicken fried steak. I got the chopped bbq beef fully loaded potato. And it was...ok. I would have liked my potato cooked more. It also needed more butter and sour cream. The bbq beef was ok but nothing to write home about. But since my husband raved about his meal, maybe my choice just isn't their best item. I will save the service was excellent! Our server was very sweet and helpful. It was busy on a Sunday at 11:45 a.m., but my husband and I got seated right away. He got the chicken fried chicken, and I got the Conductor, which my husband helped finish. Everything was good and reasonably priced for the amount of food you get. The coffee is also delicious. Kristin was our server, and she did great keeping our water and coffee filled and checking in on us. It was delicious, but there was a huge egg shell in it. Which ruined the meal for me when I bit into it (texture thing) My hubby got the conductor and he said it was very delicious. Absolutely would have given this place a 5 since the ambiance, food and clientele were awesome. First time here, sat at the bar, and ordered same breakfast which took a half hour to get. A local did explain to me that today's special (Sunday) is chicken and dumplings which is a hit for so many people that came in and that is why the kitchen is backed up. The bartender also apologized for the long wait when the breakfast did come out. The special was ordered by most people on the table instead of breakfast. I will have to try the chicken and dumplings the next time I come here on a Sunday since they only serve it on a Sunday. Discovered that they also have all you can eat catfish on Friday and Saturday! The bill was reasonable and the food was still worth the wait. Encourage catfish lovers to come here on Friday and Saturday to share their experience about the all you can eat catfish. Service is in the slow side, was told the cooks were busy? Been 3 coffee refills... cold toast, no butter, so cold the butter wouldn't melt on it!! When asked if I could have new toast the serve wanted to know if I wanted it grilled or from the toaster? WTF... this isn't my decision, I'm just looking for hot buttered toast! Hade to return the waffles because they were undercooked, replacement waffles were the same! Server offered to remove the charge from our ticket. Listening to other folks and we can hear others complaining about their food! Found this on our way home. American food classics with a touch of southern flare. Our waiter was accommodating, helpful and friendly. I ordered a side salad, blackened catfish (1 filet) and Mac and cheese. My husband ordered the all you can eat catfish bites with sweet potato fries and coleslaw. We didn't have long to wait for our meal. My blackened catfish was too salty so I had to scrape off the seasoning which did little to neutralize the saltiness, but eating in the Mac and cheese helped. This place is so cute, has a small family business feel. They entice you with dessert at the front where you walk in and wow! did that chocolate eruption cake look delicious. We opted for lunch and way overdid it but wanted to try as much as we could and we were not disappointed. The appetizer sampler gives you a chance to try 3 different items from the menu of your choice, we went with fried mushrooms, fried pickles, and fried green tomatoes. All were amazingly crunchy, fried fresh and in no way greasy. They all had they're own distinct flavor with a good ranch dressing to dip them. We had the Philly cheesesteak sandwich, highly recommended. We also tried the open face turkey sandwich which was where the only complaint came to mind when it was sandwich meat turkey but after trying it the flavor I was looking for was still there. The Whistle Stop Cafe serves stick to your ribs food with a solid selection of beverages. We had chicken fried steaks with onion rungs, fried pickles, mixed veggies, and bacon green beans. Everything felt like it was cooked fresh. The breading on the pickles was insane and crunchy. In fact all the batter was crisp and perfect. The mixed veggies and green beans were fresh and hot ... not wilted. And the white gravy for the chicken fried steak was just the right gooiness and savoriness. The only thing that was unexpected was that the food was lacking pepper and salt. Normally, the plethora of fried foods we had would be overly salty. It was a shock to get food that was flavorful but not over the top on salt or pepper. Of course saline and pepper was easily remedied to the level we expected. Kudos! The Service was very slow and our waiter had to go help in the kitchen (I'm assuming they were short staffed). I asked for fried pickles and never received them and it took a long time for the food to come out and for anyone to come check on the table...Otherwise, the food was good. We ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and it was very good. The fries here are like "home fries" and don't have an "old burned oil" taste. Very good and not greasy at all. I don't fault them for the very slow service (considered giving ).... I've worked in the restaurant industry and know how difficult it can be when the restaurant is "short staffed". Eleven (11) Excellent, hot, wonderfully crusted, hand-made green fried tomatoes. Somehow we managed without the twelve pieces promised on the menu; a small error in count. The fact we all had our own serving plate, each with a side of ranch dressing for dipping easily compensated us. Atmosphere was set for families used to the sound of children above the hum of the beverage machine. Country music was on, but barely audible. TV's were available, muted, and on parent-friendly FNC and ESPN. Lighting was unpleasantly industrial fluorescent. Chicken fried steak was thick, and over coated, but remarkably tender. Gravy was standard. Terrific onion rings....but, One thing: Spice. I'm not sure if there is any in the kitchen, but it certainly did not make it onto the plate in any form. Instead, each table is equipped with a bottle of Louisiana Hot Sauce. I restrained myself from pouring it onto everything except the Charro beans, which, by golly, should be spicy! I have only been to this place one and a half times. The first time I wandered in because I was too early for a nearby appointment. The doors were wide open, and I thought "cool, I could use some breakfast!" I was shouted at by a male staff member as soon as I stepped inside, " WE'RE NOT OPEN YET!". I was embarrassed, startled, and made to feel as un welcomed as un welcomed gets. I didn't have time to even lay my eyes on the menu, or get a general vibe of the place. I quickly turned around and rushed out. Over the years, I never went back, because well...it left an unsettling feeling in me, of being un welcoming. Then recently I had my parents over, and everyone was hungry. Whistle Stop Cafe was the nearest place, so I suggested we go there. It was almost closing time, and quite frankly, we didn't quite make the cut off time. The staff was amazing, and took our orders, and said it's no problem. Our waitress stayed late on her shift just for us, which is really going above and beyond. We had appetizers and Burgers, which were so good, I kept thinking about them even months later! I am a fan of café style food anyway, and I've been to plenty of them all over the western US. Whistle Stop stands out, and I am looking forward to returning and trying more items on the menu. Looking for a lunch place on the way back home. Stopped in, all the tables in the small dining room were full and we found seats at the bar. Server was very friendly. We ordered House salad and Club sandwich to split. Food came out fast and was split for us already. Salad was fresh and delicious. First time there today for lunch. The chicken and dumplings were not as good as I am use to. Big round balls for dumplings. Tasty but not going to order again. My husband ordered hamburger steak it was ok but his sides were awful. The Mac and cheese is the powered Kraft Mac and cheese. Couldn't believe it. The mashed potatoes were cold , lumpy and the gravy was not good. Sorry , for this review but maybe it will help you. We ordered French fries and they were delicious!!
