I have only been to this place one and a half times. The first time I wandered in because I was too early for a nearby appointment. The doors were wide open, and I thought "cool, I could use some breakfast!" I was shouted at by a male staff member as soon as I stepped inside, " WE'RE NOT OPEN YET!". I was embarrassed, startled, and made to feel as un welcomed as un welcomed gets. I didn't have time to even lay my eyes on the menu, or get a general vibe of the place. I quickly turned around and rushed out. Over the years, I never went back, because well...it left an unsettling feeling in me, of being un welcoming. Then recently I had my parents over, and everyone was hungry. Whistle Stop Cafe was the nearest place, so I suggested we go there. It was almost closing time, and quite frankly, we didn't quite make the cut off time. The staff was amazing, and took our orders, and said it's no problem. Our waitress stayed late on her shift just for us, which is really going above and beyond. We had appetizers and Burgers, which were so good, I kept thinking about them even months later! I am a fan of café style food anyway, and I've been to plenty of them all over the western US. Whistle Stop stands out, and I am looking forward to returning and trying more items on the menu. First time there today for lunch. The chicken and dumplings were not as good as I am use to. Big round balls for dumplings. Tasty but not going to order again. My husband ordered hamburger steak it was ok but his sides were awful. The Mac and cheese is the powered Kraft Mac and cheese. Couldn't believe it. The mashed potatoes were cold , lumpy and the gravy was not good. Sorry , for this review but maybe it will help you. We ordered French fries and they were delicious!! Had brunch with my son at The Whistle Stop Café today. What a pleasant surprise. Small place, friendly service, wonderful homemade food and extremely reasonable prices. The servers all seem to work well together. And, there was a gentleman who seemed like the owner or manager who was very present and helping out wherever it was needed. We were originally given the lunch menu. We took a chance and asked if it was too late for breakfast (10:55 am). Our server (Mia) kindly brought us a breakfast menu. During our visit, Mia checked on us just enough to make sure our beverages stayed full and we had what we needed, while not interrupting our conversation. I had coffee and the Box Car (2 eggs, hashbrowns, choice of bacon/ham/sausage and toast or english muffin. Everything was perfect. The coffee was delicious as was my food. Everything was perfectly cooked. Even my toast was amazing. It was clearly toasted on a flat top grill (as opposed to in a toaster). It was slightly buttery and toasted. Yet, also still super soft. It tasted like the freshest toasted bread I had ever had. I didn't even add butter or jam. Who knew that toast could be so good? My son had the french toast and added fresh strawberries and blueberries and a side of loaded hashbrowns (hasbrowns topped with grilled onions, bacon and cheddar). The french toast was delicious: crispy and fluffy. The added fresh fruit is an additional $1 per type of fruit and worth every penny. But, the loaded hasbrowns were also a standout. Not too many toppings, and not too little. The grilled onions really brought everything together while not overpowering. I really wish there were another location closer to me (inside the loop in Houston). I want to try so many more things from both menus. To sum it up: you should check it out!! read more

Mom and I stopped here on our way into Houston. It was probably around 2. It could definitely use a good sweeping, but other then that, we were happy. They have a menu with great options. We decided to do loaded baked potatoes with meat. Mom got the pulled pork and I got the grilled chicken. We weren't expecting the meat to be on the side. Lol. But the flavor was great on both! I was expecting this place to be awesome because the reviews are all great. The service was good, the cafe was clean, but the food has zero flavor. I ordered the chicken tenders with mashed potatoes and gravy. The chicken was juicy, but flavorless. The mashed potatoes didn't even taste like they had butter. The gravy was also flavorless. My boyfriend ordered the chicken fried steak and we had the same issue. The steak was very very chewy and did not even seem like it had salt or pepper. We appeared to be the only customers in the place other than a man at the bar counter who was on his phone. After being told to sit wherever we wanted to by a polite young man, we ordered a cup off coffee. During all this time the gentleman at the bar was on the phone talking loudly. He soon got up and while speaking made several tours around the restaurant, in and out of the kitchen, all while continuing his loud phone conversation.
