TBH, the first time I went to the Whitby (for high tea) - it was not for me. The folk-heavy decor just didn't float my boat; the table wasn't that great, and the service was "okay." So when my colleague - who absolutely loves this place - suggested we go again for dinner, it was with a heavy sigh I agreed. And am I glad I did! What a different atmosphere in the evening. Cozy, warm, old-school NYC, but also with a contemporary vibe! Impressive, attentive service! I loved it! Have twice had dinner here - the roast chicken is superb (although, to my tastes, it could do without the ample "huckleberry gastrique" - which just is not very flavorful); and I've also had the Dover Sole, which was prepared to perfection. Between a table in the dining room and a table in the bar area, I much prefer the bar area, which has nicely-dimmed lighting and plays wonderful American Standards music (the brightly-lit dining room seems made much more for business dinners, where perhaps a need to look over some paperwork might come up?) Lastly, and best of all, they serve a decent, stiff drink here. "Nighttime" Whitby has become one of my faves. read more

This will be a very long review and if you click on my name, you'll see all of my reviews are very specific and comprehensive and that I almost never leave 1 star reviews. I'd been to The Whitby three times, The first two times were for baby showers and tea in the Orangerie and private garden rooms in the restaurant. Both times were very good. The service was good, the food was good, the little desserts were very pretty even though the tea sandwiches had a pre-prepared dryness to them but both times were good nonetheless. This one star review however is for the evening my mother and I were invited to attend a private screening and viewing event for a Participant film. We drove from CT, paid $65 parking (for nothing and you'll read why when I'm finished) and were turned away from seeing the movie. We'd been to other night screening events at The Crosby but this was our first and now last at The Whitby. Because we had been to the hotel before, we came early to explore and sit in the library before the event started. When the doors opened, we went down to the lower level to check in and the two women who were handling the guest list new we were on the list but refused to let us in. They kept whispering back and forth, checking the list, placing calls, made us wait, spoke to various people, let everyone else was in before deciding that there was nothing they could do but not let us in. They knew who we were based on who got us on their precious list. I didn't mention who the person was, I just mentioned our names and we were invited guests. Sorry we don't look NYC industry enough for you or maybe we just were white enough for you as we got turned away and only one other couple also got turned away -- one of whom was also not white. So I told my mother forget it, we left and drove a very silent ride home. So if you want know my brother was CFO of the company, now closed, and the film was Oppenheimer. Hanz Zimmer and some other guy were the only two persons tied to the film who was there, maybe he was the one who didn't want us there. I didn't tell my brother what happened as it was too embarrassing, humiliating and shameful. I didn't even want to talk about it with him it was too upsetting. He didn't find out until we saw him a week later when he asked us how the film was and I told him we never saw it due to the above. We went rounds as he couldn't believe me. He then placed a call and had a conversation with someone, and that someone he spoke to lied and lied and lied to cover themselves. I could hear the person scrambling over the phone because I was standing right there. To make up for the mess, I went to see Oppenheimer at The Crosby Hotel and saw Cillian Murphy. AND then I saw Barbie AND got to see Ryan Gosling, Michael Cera and America Ferreria. And even though it was three years ago, Barbie was more fun and way better unlike noisy loud and depressing miserable Oppenheimer. The hotel, the dumb women who don't understand checklists and most likely invited their person friends intead of properly maintaining the names of guests who are actually on the list and Hans can go fuck themselves. Our stay at the Whitby was fantastic. From the location, to the decor, to hospitality -- top notch! I could not recommend it more. We traveled with our daughter to both look at a college and as a part of a leg of our summer travel and it did not disappoint. It is central to all that the city has to offer and within easy walking distance to lots of shops and restraints. We dined at the hotel for breakfast and it was delicious. It's a bit pricy overall but worth the splurge if you're looking for a great NY spot! read more

The best hotel in all of NYC! I've been coming to visit the city for years, as my aunt is a resident. So fair to say I have stayed in a number of hotels across the city. This trip was no different in my quest to try out something new and when I saw the Whitby I knew I had to stay. I booked the room online and counted down the days until my stay. Upon arrival, the hotel is a bit more unassuming from the outside than I would have thought. Two wonderful doormen stood there waiting to help us in! We were then greeted by the concierge who took our bags as we arrived early, about 11am. They escorted us to the front desk. She was absolutely so kind and helped get us checked in. Simple and easy, and although our room wasn't ready, she had us ready to go once it was. We went out for a bit and got a call the room was ready about an hour after we had left. Upon re-arriving (and all the welcomes!) went up to the front desk and got our key! How lovely, our bags had been put in our room. Seamless. Up we went! The floors aren't overly crowded with rooms, maybe 10 per floor. Nice and quaint. The decor is eccentric yet tasteful. The room was ADORABLE! Greeted with a small built in book shelf in the entry hallway and the best floor to ceiling window. Call me crazy, while the room doesn't have "views" there is something so nice about the city buildings outside that is quintessential NYC to me. The best was so nicely made and comfortable. The bathroom had two sinks which was lovely for my mother and I to have our own. The shower. Amazing. Never have I had such wonderful water pressure at a hotel, let alone in the city. We left for the evening and when we came back the beds had been turned down, with water bottles ready for us on either side. They must've known!! Overall, there is not enough wonderful things to say about this hotel. The entire experience was nothing short of 5 stars. The staff is so welcoming and kind, the location is amazing, and the rooms are perfect! Already figuring out when I can stay again. read more

I've been to the Whitby twice for afternoon tea and the decor and ambiance alone are enough to go back. The whimsy mixed with elegance is the perfect blend and makes going to high tea feel fun and not pretentious. The food is rather hit or miss but overall the experience is stellar. Scones/biscuits- amazing, sandwiches - kind of bland but it's tea so maybe that's expected?, desserts - good but very sweet. Good for one bite. Overall it's a lovely experience and a better price point than most of the other options in the area. Definitely worth a visit! read more

This review is for the afternoon tea service. This is worthwhile if you're interested in the ambiance - beautiful room with its decor and furniture, and the dining sets were lovely. The actual food was traditional in the sense that you get your typical sandwiches, scones, and sweet desserts. From the plethora of small bites, I'd say the only yummy item was the scones. The sandwiches didn't taste all that fresh and the dessert choices were just odd (chocolate mint cupcake?) at least to my palate. For the price, you may get better options elsewhere in the city. read more

Really 4.5 It's gorgeous inside, with wild prints and beautiful art throughout. Good location if you like or need to be in midtown. Easy walk to the theaters. The high tea is worth it. I was traveling with my kid, so I didn't frequent the bar, but the jazz was nice to come home to. Uneven on doorman /- sometimes they were around to help, sometimes they weren't. Our most recent stay at the Whitby was truly wonderful. the rooms, the service, the food, cleanliness and most of all, the front desk staff. they were so good to us. My wife and I went to the theatre at the Whitby Hotel for a Netflix/SAG Awards screening of Squid Game (Ep 6) and a lovely reception afterward with some of the cast. I was pleasantly surprised by the remarkable theatre downstairs. Makes me wonder how many more hotels have movie theatres in them. I've been to three thus far. The interior decor of this place was absolutely beautiful and I can't compliment the staff enough. I am looking forward to visiting it again soon for more events. read more

I know it is hard to find anything charming in midtown and this hotel certainly is charming, but it is nowhere near as charming as it needs to be to command these prices. Also, the decor is original and delightful, but that delight gives way to feeling taken advantage of after a day or two as the hotel's shortfalls start to become more and more apparent. For one thing, the staff is mediocre. They are genuinely trying to do their best, but as much as they try, they are simply not the right people for the job. I am going to guess that the hotel owners (Firmdale) don't want to pay for an A+ staff and happy to skate-by with the B-team to maximize profit. Places like The Mark and The Carlyle are institutions that know the value of the A+ team and it makes a huge difference in the guest experience because they do. It feels like you are part of a family there while it feels like everyone here wants to do the minimum not to get fired and the hotel wants to pay them the minimum needed not to quit. Even The Crosby downtown (sister hotel to The Whitby) has done a much better job hiring. If Soho hasn't become an outdoor shopping mall with idiots fighting over "limited edition" merchandise to stand in line for, buy and sell on eBay at every corner, I would have stayed there, but alas, the days of Soho being cool and edgy are far and away in the rear view mirror. Soho is only still cool for the clueless. I digress, the concierge at The Whitby has zero pull around town and is basically left googling, Open Table-ing and Resy-ing the same as you would without their help. We got where we needed to go with zero help from them. They tried, but simply don't have the skills or connections to make anything meaningful happen. Other hotels in this price range can pull off miracles when needed. These guys don't even know what the new restaurants and shows are, let alone have special access to them. Also, the front desk staff aren't cold by any means but they are also not particularly warm or welcoming and the none of the staff wear N-95 masks and all get by with a paper one often hanging below their noses. New York is the Covid variant epicenter of the world. This should not be acceptable at any price range, let alone this. Now to the rooms. 1. At these prices, the curtains and shades need to be automatic. I have to work every night and morning to open or close them. Their cords are also very awkwardly placed and hard to reach (behind TVs, night stands, etc) 2. They do not have those heated room service compartments to deliver warm food to the rooms, so the best you can hope for is room temp food. 3. There is a single off switch for all the lights in the room by the door. If it is on, you have to navigate your way in the dark, if it is off, you are blinded. Not an the fluid experience one would expect for a $2000 room or a $5000 suite. The Baccarat Hotel has the lighting (and room service) thing down to a science. I can go on and on, but the bottom line is, if you are willing to pay these prices, don't expect to have the experience associated with them. If they give you 50% off and you have to be in Midtown, then you are about where you should be viz a viz the price to value ratio for a 5 star midtown hotel. Do better Whitby or lower your prices to match the experience you actually provide. read more

One of the most beautiful hotel rooms I've ever had pleasure of staying. My hubby and I visited NYC for 3 days and were deciding btw the St. Regis and The Whitby, we decided on the The Whitby and I am so happy we did! The hotel is tucked away on 56th street right off of 5th avenue. When we walked into the hotel the staff greeted us each time with such warmth. Each time we would leave and return they would talk with us and were so nice. The hotel main areas are beautifully decorated and CLEAN! Now on to our room...OMG! I seriously was like screaming inside when I walked into the room. It was a junior suite. Breathtaking views. Living room, bedroom had floor to ceiling windows. Impeccably clean! Full walk-in closet. The bathroom had heated floors, beautiful bathtub, personal tv, soft lighting. Everything about this hotel was fantasy and magical. This will be my only choice when I visit NYC!!!! read more

We came to New York for NYE 2019. It was just an overnight trip and we wanted to wind down. We first made reservations at The Parker. We stayed there years ago when it was Le Parker Meridian and had a wonderful experience. For this visit we checked in...looked at the room and checked out. It was not up to our standards. So now we are stranded with no hotel room. We found this hotel while frantically searching for a 4-5 star hotel that would be comfortable and help us ease in the New Year. THE ROOMS: we stayed in Deluxe/Luxury rooms. I must say I don't know what the difference between the two were. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. My companion had an excellent view but my room did not (is that the difference?) This didn't bother me at all. The rooms was beautifully and eclecticly decorated. The bathroom was pristine and the whole room was beyond what we had expected. THE SERVICE: Everyone we encountered was accommodating and kind. When our Uber couldn't access the road to the hotel on NYE the staff helped him navigate. The staff in the restaurant was courteous and they seems invested in making sure our service was excellent. THE RESTARANT: we had dinner on NYE here as well as breakfast the next day. The food was delish. I had rack of lamb, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts. The food was well prepared and very tastey. *overall we hadn't heard of this hotel and neither had most of our Uber drivers but it was an excellent stay. We have stayed at some of the best...the ritz, four seasons, peninsula etc...this was one of our best stays. We will def return!!! read more

Omg amazing. I was invited to a high tea birthday brunch and was thrilled to discover one of their two menu options is vegan/gluten free. It was exquisite! Each bite was creative, beyond delicious and so healthy. There were gluten free scones with cashew cream and sugar-free raspberry jelly, "tuna" sandwich (so yum), avocado and sundried tomato on house-made seed bread and four delicious sweets. One of the most thoughtful whole plant options in the entire city. Wow! A total surprise! (And so filling I left with a doggy bag.) read more

This lovely hotel has the perfect combination of posh elegance and friendly charm. I liken it to getting invited to Lady Grantham's Chateau but being greeted by family. I don't think I can afford to always stay here but I definitely want to. Nowhere else will ever live up to the service, style and comfort at the Whitby. It was the most enjoyable hotel I have ever visited in NYC - without exception. Beds are luscious, comfy and rooms are stunning, clean and well appointed. This hotel is conveniently located right off 5th Avenue and a short distance to Central Park. However, I did not find that the service justified the cost of my stay. The cost of my room included breakfast but the restaurant didn't open until 8 and I had 8:30 meetings both days as I was on a work trip. Second, I made a reservation for afternoon tea for Friday afternoon and when my client and I arrived for our tea, we were told that they couldn't accommodate us as I hadn't made the proper reservation, even though a) I did make the reservation, in person, with the maitre d' and b) a woman was already seated at another table having tea. After 20 minutes they finally accommodated us but it was embarrassing and a letdown. Lastly, I asked the concierge to help procure me a town car to take to JFK late Friday afternoon. I did ask for the cost of the car but was never notified. When I received my final bill the cost of that 1 way, 1 hour trip to Kennedy from mid-town was $396 (which was more than my flight back to Texas). I asked for help with this and they did give me a very slight refund but refused to do anything further (and refused to return my calls). Just saying if you stay there please be very careful when asking the concierge for any help or recommendations. Unless you really don't care about any prices...but in that case you'd probably want to stay in a nicer hotel. read more

We enjoyed the afternoon tea, but it would have been a better experience had they not seated a large group of loud preteen girls who were there for birthday party, right next to us. They should have been given a separate room. We were not the only ones who were annoyed. My husband took me to the Whitby Hotel for my birthday and from the moment we walked thru the doors we were treated like royalty! From the front desk staff to the concierge everyone was incredible. We had a slight car accident on the way into the City and when we got there we were a little distraught. The staff showed us into the beautiful drawing room and served us tea. They also checked us in early and upgraded us to a suite! When we arrived in our suite there was champagne and flowers and a hand written birthday note from the management! The room was so warm and inviting and the marble bathroom had a beautiful tub and TV. We were beyond impressed. We had high tea luncheon in the dining room and it was an amazing experience, felt like we were in London! I can only say that the Whitby took what would have been a wonderful birthday and turned it into the best birthday of my life. Thank You! read more
