This was an excellent experience and I would not hesitate to return. We were heading to the Minneapolis area for a wedding, and had seen the Wienery on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and wanted to check it out for ourselves. This is the type of place that is really rare. Since being on DDD the owner's gotten one other person to help. Nevertheless they still make EVERYTHING to order. Even the chili. Even the hand-cut fries that you order by number of potatoes. (Which were freakin' delicious by the way). They even chop all the toppings to order for the chicago-style dogs (vienna beef dogs even!) Yes, the front door has a non-existent knob. Yes, the chairs are ripped and the stools wobble. You want milk with your coffee? Here's a half gallon from the fridge. You want soda? Help yourself.....no ice and either diet coke, coke, mellow yellow, water, or root beer (and the day we visited they were out of coke). "I should be getting help soon so I can do things like wipe off the counter" he tells us as he gives us our menus. But the place was clean (not eat off the floor clean but not OMG let's not eat here dirty either). The food was EXCELLENT and the unique charm of this place is what would make me come back. Only at a place like this do the cooks sing along with the music......confer on orders by going "oh those 3 at the end of the counter are new...HEY GUYS BE WITH YOU IN A MINUTE!" The prices are really, really reasonable. A soda, a burger (with hot peppers and garlic in the handmade patty), a "two potato" order of cheese fries, and a "manhattan" coney style chili dog= $10. Be warned though...it's SMALL in there and since they do make everything to order it took nearly 30 minutes to get our order (with moderate business). My new department at work goes to a different restaurant from Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives every month for lunch. Last week we stopped by the Wienery for lunch. Not being a hot dog eater, I wasn't really sure what to expect. Luckily, they have plenty of other options if you don't want hot dogs. The first thing I noticed walking into this restaurant was how tiny it was, and how dirty it looked. This place is definitely a greasy spoon, who knows if they even clean the tables. I actually felt a little dirty even touching the catsup bottle. Dirt aside, the food was pretty good. I ordered the veggie burger and I know it was fresh because I saw the cook go into the back for a can of black beans. If you like hot dogs this is the place to go, they have at least 10 different varieties on the menu. If you are looking for a dive, this is definitely your place. read more

I have been wanting to try this place forever, especially because I work very very close by, but the place can polarize opinion, so there was always someone in the group that really hated this place and did not want to go. A couple of days ago I finally found a couple of friends that were both OK with this place and so we went. First impression was pretty bad. I mean I know you want to be dive-y and the decor is original, but chairs, tables and mirrors are so run down they cannot possibly be clean! With all those cracks and stuff you cannot really get rid of the dirt even if you bleach it every day. Anyway, I counted on the kitchen to be in better shape, but I didn't adventure to close to the cook to make sure because, as I said, I really wanted to try this place. After spending sometimes trying to decide between the numerous different options, I had the brat with the coleslaw: pretty good! Also the wieners are cheap, but for a proper meal I think you need to have something more than just a wiener. If they renewed the whole place, or at least restored the chairs, tables etc. to their original splendor and cleaned the window, I might bump this place up 1 or 2 stars, but even if food is OK I cannot ignore the state of the shop. The secret to life is chili cheese fries and bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Fortunately, you need only to travel to the West Bank, instead of a craggy, snow-topped mountain to discover this for yourself. While I love more elegant eateries, I'm also down for the homey, greasy spoon foods that really hit those basic Neanderthal cravings. The Wienery has long been a place on my To Eat list; when Jared won tickets to see Dark Dark Dark at the Cedar, I knew it was time. Decor is of the Beat Up Minimal Dive flavor. If dingy isn't in your vocabulary, you might not want to go. However, if you don't mind, then come on in! Fries are made to order from potatoes sitting around the grill, waiting to become golden crispy sticks of fried potato-y goodness. Count on one potato per person, which is the unit you order your fries in. We ordered the chili-cheese fries, which came topped with shredded cheese and a scoop of chili. The chili was a bit on the runny side, but it worked; you could taste the potatoes along with the chili. Fork required. The Italian Roast beef is hot, as in spicy, but not intolerably hot if you eat spicy food. So if the Mild sauce packets from Taco Bell are your most dangerous condiments, stay away. Otherwise, enjoy the sensation of your mouth slowly burning. Service is a bit slow, but mainly because one guy works the grill, fryer, and takes your order. Ok .. so my first impression upon entering this joint was .. Can this place be any more ghetto? Well, I didnt really expect a fancy schmancy place since it's right next to the Minneapolis well-known ghetto building and everything, but come on!! dust everywhere, ripped chairs, sticky tables, extremely open kitchen (well, the back door was open .. not very sanitary, imo), etc .. I was telling the wife about the one review for the Wienery that talks about how the neighborhood and the "projects". We were still laughing when we came into a steamy Wienery before our 8pm show @ the Cedar Cultural Center two doors down. Sure the floor is gritty and dirty, and the seats are torn, but so what? The Wienery, where I'm a semi-regular, is Minneapolis through and through. However, to truly "get" this delightfully shabby local institution, one would do well to consider the particular neighborhood ecosystem in which it thrives. More than being of Minneapolis, The Wienery is a product of and vital contributor to its West Bank environs. The West Bank is a tough, resilient place that, unlike the East Bank (a sad story for another review) hasn't ceded (and shows few signs of ceding) to the forces of redevelopment and all the accompanying blandness. While I'd stop short of calling the West Bank an oasis, it's one of the increasingly rare corners of the city possessing genuine character. Stroll along Cedar Avenue and you'll find the entrepreneurial efforts of the city's East African population paying dividends in a series of bustling grocery stores, coffee shops, and restaurants (and sometimes all three in the same space). These storefronts seem to happily coexist with watering holes of many varieties: Acadia (the students' choice), Palmer's (the now-fashionable dive), Triple Rock (live music), and The Nomad (catering to many tastes). These businesses are interspersed with small havens for the arts (Cedar Cultural Center and The West Bank School of Music) and a number of local oddities (the venerable Intercontinental Video, for example). Taken together, the neighborhood offers something for everyone, and is all the better for it. However, it doesn't look like much, and you can't really appreciate the neighborhood if you don't approach it on foot, taking your time to stop and get a feel for things. In this context, The Wienery makes perfect sense. It's an unassuming, hidden in plain sight sort of joint. Inside there's a diner-style counter that can accommodate about 10 people and a few tables along the opposite wall. If you sit at the counter, which you do unless it's full, you'll face melange of knicknacks and memorabilia which will occupy your wandering mind as you wait for your food if you're able to pull yourself away from the oh so compelling social media updates littering your phone. Like many of the spaces along this stretch, it's old and fairly worn-down, but I've never found it to be dirty, as some reviewers suggest (though if you're the sort of person for whom old and somewhat run-down equal dirty, then I'd advise you to head up the street and seek the familiar assembly-line comforts of Chipotle). When you arrive, wait patiently; whoever happens to be working knows you're there, but it's typically a one-person operation, and said person may be juggling quite a few things. If a menu isn't already lying on the counter, you'll soon be presented with one and asked to choose from a dizzying array of hot dogs (you can get burgers and breakfast items too, but you're at The Wienery, after all), which arrive pretty quickly. Minneapolis isn't obsessed with dogs in the way that Chicago and Detroit are, but The Wienery will do a fine job of satisfying your craving (probably a more serviceable job, in fact, than anywhere else in town, not that there are many options). I rarely stray from the Chicago and the Warsaw (and have yet to be disappointed), though there are a number of other unique choices for the more adventurous. Make sure to get the fries, which are homemade and pretty decent, but you may or may not have something to wash them down with depending on the mood of the soda fountain. And by all means, take in the conversation that is typically unfolding between the high-energy, high-decibel (I mean all of that in the best possible way) middle-aged guy who you'll find preparing food more often than not (the owner, I presume) and whichever of his friends/acquaintances has dropped in for a bite. In doing so, you'll learn much about the the past, present, and future of the Twin Cities, whatever the topic of conversation. Beyond a good hot dog, therein lies the value of this place. read more

I love love love the Wienery. It has a character, a charm that larger, prettier eateries will NEVER attain. It is situated in the West Bank of Minneapolis, so you must expect colorful and interesting people serving and patronizing it, and no, they are not hipsters. They are the opposite of hipsters. The service is fine and always accommodating, I don't know what kind of service people are expecting out of a diner. Though it isn't the cleanest looking place, I love the dive-i-ness of it. The stool missing the seat is part of the charm. I like the cast of colorful character/patrons that some reviewers would shield their poor innocent childrens' eyes from, seemingly repulsed by the fact that this world is made of different kinds of people and they will sometimes assemble here. I've eaten at the Wienery hundreds of times over at least 10 years and one of the things I like most about the place is everyone working there treats EVERY person with the same level of respect as everyone else regardless of how you look. The food is tasty. The hot dogs are rad and the breakfasts are awesome! And for actually affordable prices. $3.25 for a Vienna Beef hot dog done in almost any way you can imagine. Try the Tasmanian if you dare. Your dog is covered with chili then a fresh minced habanero pepper is sprinkled all over it. Cheese and onions are optional. Delicious. $1.50 for one potato's worth of some of the best fries you ever had. Hand cut by a wall mounted potato slicer, they are fried just past golden brown and into that great, extra crispy, almost transparent french fry. Yum. So glad I finally got a chance to try this place out for an early mid-week dinner. However, I was a little disappointed with my experience. The place is small. The floors are dirty. The room is dark. The kitchen is exposed. Normally, I don't mind a dive bar. They are often honest, affordable, and charming. While the Wienery is honest and affordable, its general filth is far from charming. I guess you could call the Wienery aggressively dive-y. This is not hyperbole; the place is a shit hole. I've lived in some great hotdog towns; Detroit, New York, and Chicago. So maybe that put my expectations a little too high compounded by the Legend of this place. I had a Manhattan and a Mexicali. The dogs were just OK. Not offensive, but not that memorable either. The Wienery is a small outfit located right next to the Cedar Cultural Center. There's bar seating and a couple tables. The grungy aesthetic pairs nicely with the menu here, which includes all manner of hot dogs. I had a vegetarian Italian sausage prepared Chicago style with fries. The relish had an unnatural green color, but the dog and fries were delicious and the service was excellent. If you spend the night in jail, make sure to save your jail bracelet and redeem it here for a free meal. I grew up in Chicago. My dad worked for Fluky's as a teenager (THE BEST Chicago Vienna Hot Dog Place). The taste of the food is mediocre. The food took forever to come, and the hot dogs were overcooked. As my dad, who was a short order cook at Fluky's noted, Vienna dogs should have a definite skin to them and spurt juicy hot dog goodness in your mouth when you bite into them. This was limp and unremarkable. If you want a better Vienna dog in Minnesota, go to the hot dog place in Rochester near Mayo. The area is MUCH safer there, as well. The place is small. That's OK. But it is filthy. It is also located in a ghetto, with a definite dangerousness element. It isn't worth it. Order your Vienna Hot Dogs over the Internet and make 'em at home if you don't live in Rochester but you live in the Star of The North. This is the third establishment I have tried in the Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in the Twin City areas. The other two, Caspar and Runyon's Nook in St Paul, and Donatelli's in White Bear Lake, were superb. Therefore, I looked very forward to The Weinery. What a disappointment. The fries and chili are great, and I love that you can order fries by the potato! I even like the coleslaw here and believe me, I'm not a fan of coleslaw. French Toast- Easily the best in the city, this french toast is thick, crispy on the edges, fluffy in the middle and perfectly simple. This is my kind of dive. It would fit in the outer neighborhoods of San Francisco perfectly. Untouched by time, this is a relic of a finer time. A time when people were civilized and craved meat in tube form, and wanted down to earth genuine place to satiate that need. There was just one guy behind the counter, cooking and taking orders. I poured over the menu for quite some time. Seems that I can't quite make decisions about something as important as what will end up in my stomach. I had to go with the Picnic Dog. I was in heaven. I want to love this place...they have everything going for them. Tasty dogs, a location with real personality (and lots of cracked vinyl), super value, and everything made fresh to order. That includes chopping of veggies or potatoes for fries and everything else. The scary green relish makes me feel like I'm back in sweet home Chicago. Plus they have three 'meat' dogs and three 'veggie' dogs. Very few hot dog shops where veg friends are just as welcome! Awesome. There are also some breakfast creations involving hash browns and chili that I could imagine being excellent drunk food if only they were open late. Pretty good. I got the Tasmanian Devil because i LOVE spicy chili. I can't say I didn't love it. The only thing that turned me off was the restaurant itself. It's very dirty. And the service was weird. Our server was really friendly and got our order in and food out fast, but when we went to pay the cashier, cook and waiter (who were directly in front of us) just stood there and had a full on 2 min convo before they turned to us....even though they saw us.........so that was awkward. Yeah! This place rocks. The Wienery has been my destination restaurant of choice in Minneapolis for years. Cheap food, great vegetarian & vegan options, really cool staff. I've eaten here a half-dozen times at least, and I don't think I've been disappointed by anything on the menu. The fries are good, the bratwursts are good, the toppings are good. Make it spicy. Oh, and those breakfasts are something else. Every order here is made with care, and from start to finish you'll be treated like a real person by the person taking your order (who might also be the cook). I visited Minneapolis for three things: to see my boyfriend, a job interview and to eat at The Wienery. I remember seeing something on the Food Network about The Winerey and then checking out their website. Ever since then, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I love that there are so many vegan options and also meat options. It works great since I don't eat meat and my boyfriend is a total carnivore. I ended up getting a vegetarian Chicago dog (if you don't know what a hot dog is like in Chicago, I suggest you "google it") and Picnic fries which included a large bundle of tasty (possibly hand cut?) french fries, vegetarian baked beans, cheese and coleslaw. So freaking good. Also, they give you a cup for pop so you can help yourself to the pop machine instead of waiting for your server to go fetch you a refill. The girl who served me was such a doll, too! I just wish it were a little bigger inside. I wasn't too sure on the cleanliness of the table I ate at. But if the food tastes amazing, I'm sold for life. I had read so many reviews on Yelp, but either we all have very different views on what a good hot dog is, or maybe this place has gone downhill. The place was pretty rundown and cleanliness was not high on the list. There was one guy working and he took our orders. I ordered the drive in dog which included coleslaw, chili and cheese. The coleslaw was not well seasoned and neither was the chili. It led to a very soggy, mess that didn't taste very good - don't get be wrong, I don't mind eating messy food, but it better be delicious! OMG the best hot dog I have ever eaten! I saw this place on diners drive-ins and dives and tried it. It is a dive but who cares......you can have 2 coney's, french fires (and the greatest fries you will ever have) all for $8. Bring cash, that is all they accept. I would guess the decrepitation of the building is the result of a bad landlord! If you can look past this true dive and try the food, you will think you have died and gone to heaven. This is definitely the "dive" in the "Diners, Drive-ins & Dives" series. But that's what makes it charming. This little sliver of a restaurant must have been something back in the day. Now it's basically a living museum, kinda like if they opened up one of Bodie's abandoned buildings as a diner. But you come here for the food. And it was good. And everyone in my party thought it was good. And they were surprisingly accomodating to my friend's 4-year-old: as soon as we sat down, the server brought a bucket full of toys. Come in with low expectations and you'll love it. Bring your own drink- the cups are filthy. The dogs are delicious, and the fries are even better. It's cash only, be warned. The place is kind of a dump, but it's cheap and good. read more

I have been there about 5 times. it maybe a dive but the food is great and fast they do need to fix some of the stools so it dont feel like you are about to break it. i get the (forgot name) burger but it has habaneros and garlic in it. you get to see the cook chop it up freash for you. the hash browns are to die for if you like garlic. i had a chili dog once but wasent a fan of it. guess im just a burger type of person. read more

I've been here a few times. I love the different dogs I can't get anywhere else. However, I dislike the atmosphere most of the time. I find the place to be a little dirty (to be blunt.) The service has been decent but never extraordinary. Overall, if you want a great wiener with anything you can imagine on it and some delicious fries, all at a good price, you should stop in and take them TO-GO. I see what they're going for with the whole atmosphere of the place, it just doesn't scream, "Sit down and eat!" read more

The food was awesome. My burger was delicious and the hand cut fries looked awesome and tasted no less awesome. Can't say the place was all that visually appealing, but it was interesting and cool all in its own right. It seemed clean too. But I did think it was kind of odd the pop machine had no spot for ice. The pop was still cold though. Great food, but as for the place you are can see it either as interesting or unattractive. read more
