With so many people concerned about Corona virus, I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon in the middle of doing many many grocery deliveries. I decided to go with the tasting sampler, where for $15, I could pick 7 out of 15 wines to try. I tend to prefer reds over whites, so I picked 5 reds. My favorite was the 2017 Gabriel Archer Reserve. It's composed of 41% Petit Verdot, 40% Cabernet Franc, 19% Merlot, so it's a dry red wine, but nicely balanced and not overly heavy on the tongue. I did try their Jamestown spiced red wine for desert and the cinnamon nutmeg and cloves were a little bit too forward for me. I do believe it would be a great mulled wine however. And even though I'm not a big white fan, their Governors Reisling is one of my 3 favorite whites that I have ever had. Incredibly well balanced with vanilla and various fruits with just a little bit of spice. Buying a bottle is not exactly cheap, you will pay between $40 and $50 for most bottles. The winery is definitely worth a visit fora unique wine experience though. read more

My girlfriend's roommate/BFF Katie dragged me here while Lillie was in New York. I didn't run-into anyone I know from work or my personal life. Our two waitresses treated us like a couple who've been together for a few years. This idea of being in a relationship with Katie over Lillie was more intoxicating than the bottles of Merlot we shared. Williamsburg Winery is a warm place. My hubs & I were attending a wedding here and decided to go here prior to the wedding to check out things. We are both wine snobs lol. This place is just outside of Williamsburg. Once arriving the main entrance was beautiful with stone entry way. Driving down the path to the winery were grape fields on both sides and come to find out several different types of grapes to make the wine. Once arriving to the main building, plenty of parking and some parking in a field also. The have a Tavern for lunch, several shops to purchase wine and wine gifts, an outside pavilion, one man singer with a guitar at the pavilion, several chapels to get married in, and more grape fields surrounding the property. It was beautiful and the building reminded me of historic Williamsburg back in the day. We decided to go a tasting which is a flight here. They have packages of tasting four wines and you chose sweet, white, red, or a special flight they had called Virginia delight I believe. We chose white, sweet, Virginia delight. The tastings range from $22 to $24 and it includes the signature wine glass as a bonus. All of the wines were very tasty. We did end up buying a couple bottles to drink on the grounds as you come out better buying a bottle versus just buying a glass so remember that....This winery is the best winery I have ever been too. It had it all, from the beautiful grounds, awesome wine, and the lovely Tavern. We loved it here and the wines were the best we ever had!!! Highly recommend this place!!! Great winery with beatiful grounds and two tasting rooms. The indoor taste room has several tables off the gift shop. The outdoor taste room is two stories and covered just off the vineyard with a great view. It provided a relaxing tasting that anyone could enjoy. I chose the red reserve wine tasting and will definitely come back to try the others. There are several to choose from and it comes with a quality souvenir glass with the winery logo. The Williamsburg Winery is where I like to go have Sunday funday. My sister Ashely and I came here on a summer afternoon after church. Since I only get to see her every couple of weeks since she works out of town. The Williamsburg Winery is our go to spot to come and catch up while enjoying a few bottles of wine. My sister Ashley loves this place. She goes there all the time on romantic dates with her husband Raphael. The parking is good and the landscape is well kept. My friend Joel Rueben loves this place. I think it is a meh... Williamsburg has never really appealed to me. But if you are from Williamsburg, you will love it. read more

Job well done Williamsburg Winery! My friends and I (group of 5 total) had an excellent lunch here today. The ambiance is very peaceful, quiet, and not at all crowded. We were waited on promptly, and the food service was quick. Austin B did a fantastic job taking care of us, and was knowledgeable about the wines, cheeses, and daily specials. I enjoyed the "Reserve" wine flight very much, and based on the feedback from the group, it's well worth the slightly higher price. My friends tried the White Wine flight and enjoyed it, but agreed that they would go for the Reserve next time. The Corn and Crab Bisque was very good, but IMO the Bacon, Cheddar, Potato Chowder was much better (daily special item). The Roast Beef sandwich was tasty, and the Lamb Sliders looked very good as well. My fiancée loved the Harvest Salad, and the Lobster Cake (daily special) was phenomenal! I'm sure they have great coffee and desserts, but we were heading to the downtown area and decided to leave that for the next visit. We will definitely be back for another great meal soon! read more

I had an awesome experience here! I did the Taste the Trail Package and Love it. Our tour guide was new but tried to make sure she covered everything and seemed very excited about being at the winery. We did the introductory tour and taste (coming back with the in laws to do the reserve tasting + tour). Apart of our package included tasting passes to local breweries. My favorite was Silver Head Meadery because the honey tasting was an nice addition. We got a $100 dinner voucher and wine bottle with our package which was fantastic. Our room was fine , I like the idea of passport membership ( essentially you get a stamp for each room you stay in and priority room upgrades). I like the journal in each room where people who stay write it. Great touch. read more

After touring the Williamsburg Winery and enjoying the tasting event at the end of the tour, I walked away with a few bottles thrilled to crack them open with some friends and family. I'm ready to admit, I am an absolute wine novice, but I've walked away more knowledgeable about the 757's hotspot in the wine world - and what a great place to be nearby to! I love supporting local businesses, so why not support your local winery!? WBurg Winery is also a beautiful location for events, weddings included! They also do music events at their venue too. I wanted to love Williamsburg Winery. I've been trying to get here for roughly 3years. This was one of the 2 64 east wineries that was open on Tuesday's. The Winery is huge and the overall appeal needs to be updated. I've been to some really great wineries, with some amazing tasting rooms and this isn't it. I felt like I was in Busch Gardens ( Germany). Okay, so let's talk about wine service. We entered the "trap" gift shop and we were asked if we wanted to try their fine or reserved wine. We went with Fine wine and it wasn't fine. It was lack luster and lacked the bold taste that many Virginia wines embody. Out of the 7 wines I tasted, only 1 was worth considering. "Mid-Summer Night".. it's not quite summer, nor is it Night so I didn't buy it.. The tasting room wasn't very inviting and the first person we encountered wasn't very pleasant. The overall ambience wasn't very welcoming. I'm in to 2nd chances, so I may give them another try this summer. read more

My man friend and I visited this winery based on a recommendation from our resort. I've never been to a winery in VA. So, I was excited. However, my excitement was short lived. The wine tasting room was noisy and lacked the class I'm accustomed to in NC wineries. The young ladies working were not dedicated to a particular party or group. They just went down the list mumbling a brief tag line about each selected wine, which was fine since we couldn't hear over the loud group and the running toddler. We were still hoping for a nice tasting. But we found the wines to be disappointing. They all tasted the same just with a little favor. Since we weren't given any explanations about the wines (verbally or on the selection sheet), not sure if it's due to the grapes in area. Also the tasting was a little expensive. It was $10 for 7 wines and included the glass. However, it seemed like we we're tasting the same wine over and over. Maybe I'm a wine snob or I'm just not into VA wines, but I could not drink any of their white wines. The whites I tried had absolutely no character and they all tasted the same. My friend did the sweet flight and she felt the same about all but one of them. I'm a New Englander and our wineries tell you about the grapes, where/how they're grown, history of the vineyard etc. For the price of the tasting at this winery, I'd rather take my chances with any bottle of wine from a grocery store. read more

I was on vacation in Williamsburg and it was recommended to try out the Williamsburg Winery. The drive into the winery is amazing! Think back roads on gravel with grape vines on either side. Once you get to the buildings they have a historical feel about them hanging wooden signs on the outside of them and lining the inside with natural hardwood flooring. When we walked into the door that detonated "wine-tasting" and found ourselves in a 5-7 minute wait to grab our tasting tickets. Once we grabbed our tickets we elevated to the second level where the tasting room was. We stood up to a table and noticed that there was only one sommelier working and about 10 people there. Another 5-8 minute wait before being acknowledged and given a paper to select our wines to taste. During this time I saw 2-3 co-workers of the winery come in and out from behind the tasting area to being wines for restock, but never stopping to help. During our wait time more tasters joined the table and at one point I had counted up to 17 people waiting on one sommelier for their sample. When the sommelier got to us, he introduced himself as Johnny. He was very nice and knowledgeable of the products he was presenting. He was rotating allowing us to do one sample at a time. When he came around for our second choice out of 7, we begged for a couple at a time as the wait was ridiculous by the time he circuited again. He was happy to oblige and we were able to move more quickly through the wines. I posted a video of the tasting room at one point during out tasting. After finishing up the last tasting, my sister and I had selected wines that we would like to purchase and made our way to the wine shoppe room to purchase and have our glasses wrapped up. All in all the experience was ok once we got to talk to Johnny. I just felt like there was a lot of unnecessary waiting involved. I really enjoyed the spiced red that they carry for a nice Christmas wine; and will be taking Johnny's recommendation to add a little jager inside when I serve it. My sister was a big fan of the white zin so we bought a couple bottles to keep are her house. read more

Had a decent time here, could have been better if service wasn't less than average. The winery opens at 12, got there a few minutes earlier to save a seat and the worker (blonde hair older lady) was behind the bar. We enthusiastically asked if we could grab a seat despite being early and with no interest and a blank stare just stated "yeah". Proceed to our two hour stay there, she continued to give us stares despite buying food at the tavern, two bottles at the pavilion and $150 worth of gifts from the gift shop. Preface: Most of my family grew up working in the restaurant industry. 1. Came here with my family and made reservations a week in advance as a special holiday experience. Upon arrival we were sat at a picnic table next to the front door. We asked to be moved to the dining room where they had a pianist and actual dining tables. We were told that room was for reservations only...Meanwhile, it was empty aside from 2 tables, and we had reservations. 2. Waited 20 mins for our first drink, mind you we were sitting 8 feet from the bar. Had to waive down our "waitress" to order food, had to get up and find her to get refills. She seemed annoyed the entire time and when we gave her our cards for the check we stood at the front door waiting while we watched her laughing and hugging her friends at the bar. I finally walked over and asked for the check. 3. The manager noticed my tone and asked if everything was ok. I explained the reservation/seating situation and asked why they couldn't accommodate us in the dinning room by maybe pushing 2 tables together? She argued that when we arrived it was full... nope. Then claimed it was due to fire code and that the only 2 tables in the dining room large enough to accommodate us were taken.... a quick glance into the large empty dinning room makes me Question the "fire code" excuse we as there was plenty of clearance between tables. When I explained the service issues she said she'd have a "talk" with our "waitress". No apology, no "how can we fix this". It was combative and dismissive. For a place that holds itself in such high esteem and with a bill totaling $250, for an overrated LUNCH, you'd think they'd treat customers with some decency. This was a borderline bizarre experience. We looked forward to visiting here with friends this summer but that won't be happening now. read more

We attended a fund-raising event at the Winery, which boasted a 7-course French meal and plenty of wine. Those two elements are true: we were served 7 courses, and they served a different wine with each course. What accounts for the 2-star rating is that the service was slow and poorly-trained. The table setting included a glass of water, and getting refills of the water was a tiresome chore. Other than keeping one thirsty for more wine, I have no clue why this facet of the meal was so overlooked. Secondly, serving wine by swiping the glass off of the table and sloshing it into the glass while holding the bottle by the neck (near the spout) is NOT good wine service. We were disappointed overall, and the service was primarily the reason. read more

We purchased the Food, Wine & Escape package which is only available on weekdays (Nov-Dec). This included a night in their Wedmore place. (See my Wedmore Place yelp review) We did the wine tasting which was offered every 30 minutes. Last one was at 5pm. I typically enjoy white wines over reds however there were a couple of yummy reds that were delish. The Jamestown Cellars Settlers' Spiced wine....if you like sangria-this is AMAZING. This red wine would pair really well with cheesecake. They let us keep the wine glasses we used during the wine tasting as a souvenir. I was surprised when Dave preferred the white wine tastings over the reds...omg his face was priceless after trying the cabernet sauvgnon. Overall, the whole experience was so fun. read more

The gift shop was wonderful and I love the various wines available. I wound up purchasing two bottles and giving one away as a gift. I have to make this an annual visit. I came here for a private event held inside the Wessex and Westbury Hall at the winery. It is a beautiful building that has a wine cellar in the basement, I was lucky enough to be able to dine in both areas. Prior to my visit here, I had never actually been to a winery, despite living near Charlottesville for 4 years of my life. Although I love wines and frequent wine bars often, I don't drink too many Virginia wines. Luckily at the event I attended, I got to taste some of the best wines from wineries around Virginia. The meal was prepared by the Chef Ian Roberts at the winery featuring all local ingredients. The Amuse Bouche: Smoked Edwards Sausage and the best cornbread I've ever tasted. Course 1: Stuffed Barcat Virginia Oysters from Rappahanock Oyster Co. with Edwards Bacon, Wessex Hundred Arugula and Carmont Chevre.While I thought all oysters had a briny taste to them, this variety was sweeter than I expected. The salt from the bacon and peppery finish from the arugula paired well with the creamy texture of the cheese. Course 2: Wessex Hundred Salad with Picked Vegetables, Fresh Strawberries and Sherry Vinaigrette. Wessex Hundred happens to be the 300 acre farm that Williamsburg Winery is located on. Course 3: Filet of Wild Caught Rockfish with fermented vegetables and ramp butter. The buttery texture paired well with the vinegar flavor in the vegetables. Course 4: Border Springs Farm Lamb Loin w/Hoe Cake, Pea Puree, and Green Tomato Chowchow. From chowchow, to the hoecake, and even the lamb in general, this was a meal of firsts for me but one that I would love to try again in the future Course 5: "Funky Cheese Board of Rye, Caraway, Grayson, Appalachian, topped with John Adlum Mostarda. Course 6: Strawberry Cloud, w/assorted strawberries, reservoir whiskey, hickory syrup, torched marshmallow ice cream. While I am not normally a fan of deconstructed meals, diving into this was a treat. Although the textures were similar, they all stood out on their own when paired together. Each course was paired with a different wine Thibaut Janisson, Vertias Vineyard, Williamsburg Winery, Chatham Vineyards and Barboursville Vineyards. I plan on returning to the winery in the fall to go on a tour and try more of their options. Its impressive that they are able to do a great job at wine and food. read more

I've lived in Norfolk, VA for a year now and I finally was able to plan a trip to Williamsburg Winery. My friends and I planned it as a girls trip and we loved it. We did the $12 tour and tasting. Our tour guide was very nice and super informed and knowledgeable of the winery and it's wine (impressive since she stated that she has only worked there for a month). Next time, I would like to try the $38 reserve wine tour. It sounded a lot cooler than the tour that we did (especially since you get to taste their Reserve wine in their Reserve wine cellar) and they even pair it with cheese and bread. I totally feel like a wine connoisseur now! I highly recommend coming here! I decided to do a wine tour that was $12! It was a GREAT decision. My tour guide was really nice and super funny! She was very knowledgeable about the winery and wine in general! I learned a lot! Before, I just liked wine but now I know that I have a certain type of wine that I LOVE and I generally lead too! I loved the wine tasting part and enjoyed the fact we were provided with a sheet and notes to write info down! I was blown away by the 2016 Petite Fleur and the Jamestown Cellars Settler's spiced wine!!!!!! Apparently the 2016 Petite Fleur is limited edition but I really hope it becomes a permanent addition to their selection of wine because it was absolutely superb! We were very disappointed in the lack of professionalism of the wait staff. We arrived via bike shortly before 4:00. We walked into the restaurant and spoke with the hostess to make sure that we could be served. We were only wanting a glass of wine and small dessert. She said they were getting ready to turn over to the dinner and went back to check if we could get in. She came back out and said yes and I told her that I would go and park our bikes and come back. When we returned, we sat down and the hostess came out and said they were closed but then she realized who we were and said we were fine. She said she would go get our waitress. A few minutes later an entourage of waitstaff came out and told us that they were closed and that we had to leave because they could not seat us. They were very rude. We were not asking to have any food prepared. We were only wanting a glass of wine and dessert. We will not be returning and will be sure to let other people know about the lack of service and customer regard. The person who told us we would not be served was actually the manager named Jackie. We went to Upper Shirley Vineyards the day before and received excellent service and excellent food. I will be going there instead of anywhere else. read more

Visited here a few times and it was unremarkable but I was willing to come back because it is convenient. Will not return again However! Today when I checked out at the wine shop the clerk forgot to give me back my credit card. I drove an hour home. And called back once I realized it was gone. The manager keita, let me know that they had it but really didn't give much in the way of an apology. I explained how far I had to travel to come back but that I needed my credit card. I came back to get it, over an hour trip. And I really did expect something in the way of customer service or some kind of acknowledgment. Saw the manager, she looked at me and did not say anything. A few chocolates in a bag would have even went a long way towards just making me feel better about this establishment and the customer service. Yes, I know as a customer anywhere you should always check to make sure you have your card. However, there should also be training when all you're doing is checking out people who are buying wine bottles to give them their card right away. There was literally no one else in line. And the middle-aged gentleman who checked me out had nothing else to do but to just give me my card back if he was trained to do so. It doesn't matter how the mishap happened, the main thing is how does an establishment make you feel about the experience whether it's good or bad when you leave. The fact that there was no customer service when I came back let me know that I will not be returning. My husband and I frequent a lot of wineries in Virginia, and Saude Creek and New Kent right down the road our way better! read more

I was at the Williamsburg Winery's Gabriel Archer Tavern for Thanksgiving. Waste of time & money. If it wasn't Thanksgiving & I could go someplace else I would have walked out. I paid $71 (w tip) for a cafeteria style meal including paper napkins & cafeteria style silverware--NO alcohol. The waiter had on a filthy apron but he was attentive & got me out in under 30 minutes for a 3 course meal. With a reservation made 2 months in advance, I was seated in a large room w several large loud families. There was a delightful pre-room w 2 & 3/ppl at the table but I was told the empty tables were "reserved." I even offered to sit at the bar but was told no. DO NOT EAT HERE. Great place to come visit. We did the introductory tour and tasting which is a very affordable price. The tour guide was extremely energetic and you could tell she truly has a passion for the place as well as the wine which was great. The buildings are in great condition for the age they are and you can see that they are beginning to grow a lot more grapes on the land as there's a lot of baby vines. The tour showed you all around as well as giving a brief history of the winery. After the tour you go into a tasting room. During the tasting you get to sample 7 different wines. One thing I wish the tasting would have done is provided more history on the different wines & what pairs well with them and so on. However I know there are other tours available so maybe they do this on other tours. Overall was a beautiful experience and will be back! read more

This is a must see! I really enjoyed the experience my friend and I had here. I've been to a bunch of other Virginia wineries and not been pleased with the selection, too many sweet wines. There was plenty of parking, and the buildings were tucked away among vines. When I entered the winery I was amused with how busy it was. They offer tours but they didn't have one open until the next hour as they had been booked. My friend was running late so I looked around the gift shop and they had some funny wine art. Once my friend arrived we paid the 10 dollars for the tasting, seven wines and a souvenir glass. We entered a larger room with a wrap around bar. We were given crackers, water, and pencils. I loved the set up! The staff were buzzing around to each group, but it was absolutely perfect because it gave you the time to talk about the wines with your other party members and rest before the next one. The staff was friendly and very much efficient. They had four dry red wines, two semi dry whites, two dessert wines, and a rose. I liked most of the wines I chose, and at the end had a hard time narrowing down which one to purchase. After wer purchased our wines we weren't quite ready to head home (a lil' tipsy) so we walked down the road to a little cafe and decided to sit outside. Lunch was delicious. I had a pimento cheese appetizer and my friend had a caprese sandwich. It was on the pricier end but it was an experience. I want to go back! read more
