Everything was so amazing. Loved the decor, the patio was great and I loved that they have a garden across the street. I tried a lot! The nachos (get them), the turkey naan (my favorite!), the hot chicken sandwich, the doughnut holes, and the graham cracker creme brulee. Great atmosphere and outdoor seating. Inside it can get a little loud. We met a group of friends there a few weeks ago and ended up talking to the person next to us. I recommend the Pad Thai. This is a GR gem... The people working here are wonderfully friendly and will bend over backwards to help you. My gf and I made reservations for NYE, and when we arrived, we found out that there was a disconnect on the phone and our reservation was lost. This was not a problem.. Chris, the reservation manager was dashing around, apologetically trying to find us a table. We waited at the bar and our friendly bartender, Dara, crafted tasty cocktails while we waited. Fast forward to our dinner..our server, Hannah, recognized my gf's gluten free requirements and chased down the cook to answer questions. She was so friendly and knowledgable with the food. I have loved The Winchester since it opened and am such a huge fan of their expansion into What the Truck and their awesome urban farm, AND their dedication to sourcing local produce. So yes, I am a little biased, I want to love this place wholly but that is not happening. In the past three months I have been sorely disappointed. First the blackened chicken over tomato chutney on a bed of rice with green beans. Sounds amazing but was sorely mistaken. The chicken was fine but the chutney had way to much ginger. I tried to eat a couple of bites but started coughing from the heat of the ginger. When I told the waitress her response was, "Well it's supposed to be spicy!" I was taken aback and here is the reason why: I am Indian and I was raised eating spicy mango pickle and having ginger in nearly everything. I have found that line cooks who are not trained in the nuances in Asian cooking throw on spices they are not familiar with like no tomorrow and hope for the best. There is this beauty to Asian cooking in that just the right mixture of spices will bring out the natural flavor and acidity of food. This was clearly not understood by whoever was cooking that day. The Potstickers: I LOVE potstickers. These were not potstickers. They were limp and oily and had been dusted with flour that was still on the potstickers! Very disappointing. The sear on the potstickers was lumpy and crunchy at best because of the flour. Sorry to say but I think I will stick with frozen food for good potstickers when the next craving hits. The chicken lettuce rolls: Good, but once again way too much ginger. After my third disappointment last night I was a little heartbroken. I really want to love this place but I think I am going to give this place a rest for a while. I must say however that the best food The Winchester has to offer are their desserts. Came here for Sunday morning Brunch, Morgan provided great service! The brunch menu has been significantly reduced but our choices of the chicken and waffles and breakfast nachos were tasty. The music was loud, at times offensive and more appropriate for the Saturday night crowd. We did complain and they turned it down a bit ( thank goodness). The Winchester is well worth a visit. The menu has a little something for everyone. We asked our server for her opinion between a few different sandwiches and she stated "hands down" to select the Cuban Rueben with Yucca Fries. The Cuban Rueben was delicious. Pulled pork with latin slaw on ciabatta roll. It was unlike any ciabatta roll I'd had before, not hard and crusty like Panera. The Yucca Fries were served with a sort of jalapeno aoali dip. $3 premium beers from 4pm-7pm. The Winchester was a great find and I will be back to sample more from eclectic menu and possibly had a 5th star. read more

Oh the Winnie. How I miss walking out my front door, down a few blocks and into your nest. I love this place. It was the first restaurant I went to when I came back to GR for a visit. Although the menu was a little different they still had a few of my favorites. The perogies are amazing, and the mac and cheese is good too. I even got to see a few familiar faces. The Winchester was one of my favorite things about visiting Grand Rapids. The food was out of this world and the servers/bartenders were all really great and friendly. The building is well designed and you feel very comfortable when you're eating inside or outside on the patio. They have a simple menu, which allows perfection with each course, and I find that incredibly appealing about this place. It's not overly complicated. I ordered the house grilled cheese and it was easily one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches that I've ever had. It came on baked Nantucket Bakery sourdough bread with goat cheese and white cheddar, caramelized onions, portabella mushroom, Dijonnaise, with pub chips (not to be confused with fries), which were kettle cooked and yummy. I also got a side of potato salad and a pickle. My friend ordered their Pad Thai, which I thought was a really interesting item to have on their menu, and he let me try a bit of it and it was very good. He seemed pleased with his order. Before we ate, I got their Bloody Mary bar offering, which was Sky vodka, and your choice of tomato juice and countless toppings. They had everything from pepperoni slices to black olives to pickles to jalapenos to cheese cubes, and much more. I snacked on the toppings for the Bloody Mary bar while I waited for my food and drank a very delicious Bloody Mary. It was well priced too. If you get the opportunity to eat at The Winchester while in Grand Rapids, I would highly recommend doing so. read more

I'm giving the Winchester a 5 for its fantastic food, draft selection and atmosphere. The only downside is how crowded it can be any day of the week, but of you don't mind waiting a few, or squeezing in at the bar, everything else makes up for it! My boyfriend and I have been impressed by and happy with everything we've ordered here, especially the polenta fries, the bibimbop, the burger and the mac 'n cheese! They have a ginger cider that's pretty tasty if you're not a beer person like me. Fun place to hang, especially now with the outdoor patio open. read more

WHAT?! This is my new and most favorite place in GR. From top to bottom we had a faaaabulous experience here. We were able to sit outside, which was lovely, and had a most wonderful waitress (Kristin, I think) who steered us in the exact right direction for food and bevs. We had these TO DIE FOR scallops and a variety of things off the sandwich-y section. The group really enjoyed the pig half head. They thought it was perfectly tender and tastes awesome. I enjoyed a tasty and piping hot soup of the day, which happened to be vegetable corn chowder. The beer selections were good...which helped with the extremely long wait for the food to come out. Other than that the price was pretty legit for everything we got. If you had asked me to write this review a year or two ago, it probably would have gotten 4 stars. But that was then, this is now. I think the food has taken a nose-dive and have actually found that the food truck that is owned and operated by the owner of the Winchester is 10x better than the food at the actual pub. I've had the pad thai in the past and it was really good so when I ordered the same dish recently, I was incredibly disappointed. It was ABSOLUTELY TASTELESS! I even asked the waiter if they had recently changed the recipe and he said no. But something changed! He offered to bring out more of the thai chili oil and that didn't even make a difference. I just have not been thrilled lately and while I plan on coming to enjoy drinks, it'll take more for me to try some food. read more

After moving back to Michigan I lived near The Winchester for two months, and it quickly became my go to selection for after work festivities. They ahve a great beer selection, great food, and the atmosphere is awesome. It does get a bit loud at times, and due to its cramped (kinda) quarters and busyness I can't say I'd recommend it for young parents with kids (I tried it). The food is great, but can be considered almost expensive. But I have to admit it's worth it. Great food and great beer don't always happen under one roof and for these prices. I haven't had an opportunity to check out this place late at night, I usually visit between 1 and 7. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

First time in Grand Rapids in a long time and because I consider myself a foodie my girlfriend and I are checking out the local fair. If we rated my girlfriend's grilled cheese BLT which sounded great it would have gotten a 2 but the burger was exceptional, and the fries are herbed seasoned which were delicious. The homemade ketchup is a pass. The beers were awesome (Dragon's Milk & Ginger Peach Cider) so this place is a pass and I would give it another chance to complete the 4star rating. read more

I'd probably give it a 3.5 but yelp doesn't allow that. Went there on a Saturday late afternoon / early evening when dinner crowd hadn't started yet and we were able to be seated right away. I liked the atmosphere with exposed brick, high ceilings. They also have outdoor seating available as well. They were probably short on wait staff, cause it took a little bit to get our waitress there. It's OK, not much complaining there as at least she was nice. We ordered baked bone marrow as appetizer. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich, wife ordered a burger with blue cheese. We finally got the appetizer and literally 30 seconds later we got our food as well. Uh... not cool. Bone marrow was very good though, although it had quite a bit of salt. My pulled pork was lukewarm but I don't know if it's because it sat on our table while our finished our appetizer or because it was like that from the beginning. Wife liked her burger but I was too happy with my sandwich. Usually pulled pork is BBQ-style but this one was completely different from what I've had at other places. It had giardarnara (which I like) and it was supposed to have grilled onions which I didn't see. But what made it not very tasty was the supposedly parmesan aioli - which I thought was just regular mayo. It just doesn't go well, in my opinion, with pulled pork. read more

I was impressed by this place the first time I went in. I was expecting it to be like The Green Well, but it is more like a pub and the Well is more like a restaurant. The beer selection is pretty good, and if you get there between 4 & 7 for happy hour you get $3 Pints (in English Pint Glasses). Their menu is pretty inexpensive, food running between $6 & $15. The bartender actually had a conversation with us, instead of pouring a drink and disappearing like most places around here. I had the Cuban Ruben, it was amazing, it was one of the top five sandwiches I have had. They also have Plantain chips, which although I am not a fan of Plantains, I thought the chips were delicious. What a gem. The caprese w/ steak was an old favorite until they removed it from the menu. Of course, the new menu is fantastic. The Thai chicken lettuce wraps are delicious and healthful.
