Wanted to see the new upstairs room. We went about 7pm on a Friday night. There was live music in a pretty full bar area. The noise level was good- still able to have a conversations while listening to the music. There was plenty of soft couch type seating available in the adjoining area. We sat at a high top for two. Old mansion very modern and cozy, we didn't have any ghost appearances . We had a party of 8, great private room upstairs, drinks were awesome, food was very delicious fresh and hot! Our party got chicken piccata, haddock piccata was so lemony very good, ribeye was huge, tasty and tender, ravioli dish was homemade pasta, seafood casserole was packed with seafood my friend said it was delicious surf and turn was plentiful, vodka shrimp pasta was good but my friend said it did not take like vodka sauce still tasted good! Had a reservation -party of 5 Saturday night, great vibe through out ! Service, food and drinks were terrific with a full house. What a gem of a restaurant and the new addition work is impressive. As a suggestion for the upstairs, instead of squeezing the bands in against the wall by the bar, have small stage area in the back with a few more hi tops. The awesome sq footage in the back area would eliminate the congestion and bring in much more revenue. Just a thought! Terrific venue, will be back for sure! read more

We went here for the first time in about 6 years. It was quite nice inside- upstairs especially with a bar and lounge area. Very dark and moody, with a very big speakeasy vibe. There is a room attached with comfy couches and seating - not suitable for a meal but perfect for drinks and apps. We sat at a hightop near the windows up there. There was live music and an attentive server. We got there early - around 5 on a Saturday and noticed how busy the traffic coming in was after that. My old fashioned cocktail was so sweet it was undrinkable, but my server brought it back and had it "fixed " for me. Still very sweet but more drinkable. The bread was delicious, hot and fresh served with garlic herb butter. I got the pink vodka chicken pasta dish and my date got the sausage Thai Asian dish. Both were large portions and delicious. After dinner spots at the bar opened so we moved there for a drink and dessert. I had a pink lady which was better than the old fashioned and we ordered churros to share. The churros were crisp and delicious on the outside but then I noticed the center "oozing" out. I thought it was a cream of sorts but swiftly realized it was uncooked dough. I made the busy bartender aware and she said she would talk to her manager and have it removed. That never happened. We paid for our drinks and uncooked dessert and left. Bad ending to an otherwise good experience. Still it was a decent dining experience and I would go back to try other menu items. EDIT: As the owner replied, the churros are indeed filled and it was not raw dough. Apparently I was mistaken and it was not undercooked. What led me to believe this was the menu doesn't indicate any filling and I have never had this elsewhere in churros. The filling also had no flavor and was extremely hot - so it was not filled after it was cooked. Again, I would likely go back; this doesn't have a big impact on my general experience. read more

This restaurant was highly recommended by my friends and we came in as a group of 5. A problem I noticed right away was that Windham tried to fit too much into their space. The way tables were rearranged, worked, but I was sandwiched between the end of a table and a wall. Secondly, they don't have many appetizers that can be shared among such a big party unless you like calamari. We ordered misc. apps to hold us over. Their blueberry raspberry cocktail was the highlight, I loved how it came out strong! The shrimp scampi had a good amount of shrimp, but I found it a bit too saucy. Started with the delicious bread with Maple butter We started with 1/2 order of calamari and crab cakes..again delicious.. crab cakes were served with a arugula salad and a perfect gastric sauce 1/2 portions are perfect. Nice size for a dinnr We then had special burger and I had a1/2 order of Chicken Parm. It had a crunchy fried outside which sounded a little iffy but I was wrong - glad I ordered. We have been there a number of times and always happy with our meals and the service. They did have a fire a while back and I do not think they have yet reopened.... we are waiting patiently. My wife and I eat here every other month. In the summer it has an outdoor deck. We love the atmosphere - a beautiful old turn-of-the-century house with a popular bar. Adding to the ambiance, the house happens to be haunted. I'll have to admit that though I don't believe in ghosts, I have had a personal experience here that I can't explain! We love the bread and appetizers - the eggplant rolletes are amazing as is the baked brie. The drink menu is varied and creative. I love the chicken cordon bleu. It's a diverse and adequate menu. Here's a warning, however: if it's too crowded, it can be loud. We went on a Wednesday evening recently and it was so loud in one of the dinning rooms that we had to leave with our food. We reserved a table here for Valentine's Day based on their expansive online menu. However when we arrived, we found that there was only a limited menu specifically for Valentine's Day which was not communicated anywhere on the website. They stated it was because they had over 200 reservations that night and needed to keep the menu small so the kitchen could manage. Ok--that sounds reasonable. Did this menu happen to have only expensive entrees on there to take advantage of the high traffic? Yes. It was basically just chicken and fish, unless you wanted to fork out $49 for the Surf and Turf which was filet mignon and shrimp. But what was unacceptable to me was that this special Valentine's Day menu had a lot of overlap with the normal menu, meaning it a small subset of the SAME items, but at marked up prices. I was really looking forward to having their Limoncello Marscapone cake which is normally $9 but on this day was marked up to $11. Didn't even have a chance to order dessert because the kitchen closed half an hour after our reservation time--a fact of which we were not notified. The ambiance was fine. Service was quiet slow. The food was OK, but definitely not worth the inflated prices. I wish I had better things to say. I'm sure if we had come any other night it would have been fine. But the menu offerings and prices on this day did not match what was advertised online, and we definitely felt cheated and that the restaurant had been dishonest, and it really left a sour taste in our mouths. read more

This restaraunt is one of the cleanest I've visited in a while. The OCD in me makes it impossible for me to enjoy sitting down to a meal fully without noticing neglected areas when it comes to cleanliness. However, this restaurant was like SUPER clean. I was super impressed. (The restrooms are adorable too). Our waitress was very nice and informative. It was out first time there so we asked her for suggestions. It was our friend's birthday and she raved about the Windham Restaurant. She visited regularly with her co-workers 4 - 6 times a year. My friend has tried everything on the menu but says she usually comes back to the Chix Parm as it is delicious. When her plate arrived, I could not believe the size of it. She had a platter of angel hair pasta tossed with a little sauce, and what must have been the entire breast meat off a chicken. It was huge. I was glad I hadn't ordered it, because I prefer a chicken breast that is pounded thin, breaded, and fried crisp, like you get in the North End of Boston. This was easily enough food to feed a family of four, honestly. She commented that it never looked like this in the past, then she dug in. I could tell across the table the chicken was tough and overcooked by the way she was chewing it. She said it wasn't nearly as saucy or flavorful as she's had in the past. Our other friend ordered the same meal and was so disappointed she sent it back. The wait staff was LOVELY. Our server kept apologizing as if she had cooked it herself, and a manager came by asking for details of what was wrong with the dish so he could advise the kitchen. As we left I noticed the other dining area was full, so clearly people like the restaurant and show up regularly, but for me a good dining experience involves sublime food, not just an abundance of food that you can then take home and eat over the next three nights. My friend was relieved when I told her the business was under new management. She figured we thought she was crazy suggesting we go there. read more

I'm not entirely sure about the current rating for this place, but it's not accurate. I've been here twice and both times were a great experience. You'll be so busy plucking off the appetizer list, that you'll forget there's an actual main course part of the menu. Chicken Parm, Chicken piccata and the surf and turf with Filet Mignon and baked stuffed shrimp were spot on. Drinks were excellent (and strong!) and the atmosphere provided comforting vibes (C'mon critics, it's a 212 year old farm house, did you expect Davio's?). And yes, it's famously haunted. Meh. The menu looks good, but everyone in our party thought the food was sub-par. I thought it might be acceptable at half the price. Another in our party didn't think it was even that good. I won't go into the details, but it was very disappointing. If you want an experience for a special occasions it is very sub-par at special occasion prices. Finally made our way back to The Windham Restaurant after a handful of years. It was a quiet Tuesday night. The lounge was busy but not so much the dining rooms. It appears the main downstairs dining room had a nice sprucing from what I remember. Being an older building there was a noticeable draft coming in on a cold evening. Started off with a nice basket of focaccia bread. It was served with soft butter. I would have loved seasoned dipping oil. But it was still a good start. I had a cup of their soup du jour, Italian Sausage. It was luke warm which was a bit disappointing as it was flavorful. Would have been awesome if it came out a bit hotter. I had their veal parm special for my entree, served over capellini. It as a huge filling plate. But the veal was too thick for my liking and as such was a bit on the chewy side. I prefer thinly sliced nicely pounded fork tender veal cutlets.The sauce and pasta were both okay. My wife had their shrimp scampi, her all time favorite dish. She said it was just okay. So all in all, the meal was both satisfying yet also disappointing. Our server was trying hard but it looks like they might have been short staffed as there were long periods of not seeing her after we finished, I suspect working both the upstairs and downstairs dining rooms. read more

You're entire experience depends on the mood of the house and which server you get. The food is better than most restaurants in the area, I wish they would try just a little bit harder. Walking in is sometimes cramped as the regulars like to clog up the entrance, but once they figure out it's a restaurant and not just a place to stand they move out of the way and let you get seated by the host. While I waited for my salad I realized and commented on how cold the room upstairs was. Probably want to add one curtains, some pictures and some plants and warm up the room a bit. Cold and yuk! Hubby ordered a Rib Eye steak and I ordered the Baked Scallops. I asked ahead of time if the scallops were dry. The waitress said will ask. She came back and said she was told they were. Hubby said his steak was probably a "select" grade steak that looked like it was pounded out with a mallet, not tender and no flavor. At a cost of $28.00... sheer disappointment and totally overpriced. Obviously there is no management in this restaurant. Its pretty rare that a waitress has the authority to just take the meal off the bill on their own. Management usually wants to know if the kitchen is sending out meals that are getting sent back. I doubt theres even management in the kitchen. That's probably why I was told the scallops were dry when they weren't. Its obvious they don't care less if their customers are happy or not. No manager coming over and asking if you would like something else, no apologizing...no chef coming over apologizing...nothing. Just me staring at those stark, depressing walls watching my husband eat. Like its my fault the kitchen screwed up. Totally unacceptable. The whole thing Yuk, Yuk, Yuk! Fantastic group dinner, we came up from MA.... we had the best dinner and service was impeccable. They were so accommodating for our food choices.... I had the chicken and broccoli with light butter, it was amazing, all 8 of us loved our meals. We also came for the spirits, and did get a few hits on our meters. I took my mom here for the first time but I doubt we will return. The ambiance there is cold and loud. I noticed most of the crowd there was younger and I can understand it might be better suited for them. There were people laughing and the sound hurt our ears. There was a man across the room speaking quietly but the sound bounced off the opposite wall near us so I could hear his conversation. Tabletops are cold as well. We have been Salem NH residents for 10 or so years. This was our second time here and we have one regret....not coming to this establishment more. We sat at the bar and the food was excellent. If you're looking for a table, as we initially were, reserve well in advance. We chose the bar when we arrived because we saw there was plenty if room and we were without kids. Our bartender, Nick, was quite a hoot. Very entertaining, some light heated jokes...made you feel like you were family. Food portions and quality were great. It's the big yellow colonial house (built in 1812) located across the street from the On The Run/Mc Donald's near Exit 3. The place is hard to miss! The Windham Restaurant opens for dinner at 5:00 PM, closed on Sundays. The Eggplant Stack ($7.50) was presented nicely, a stacking of sliced fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and thick slices of breaded eggplant over field greens and balsamic reduction drizzle, very good. For dinner, the Veal Limone ($18) had pan seared veal, mushrooms, & artichokes in a lemon & white wine sauce served over rice, a tasty and hot dish. The Tilapia Picatta ($12 special, normally $17), soft tender tilapia seasoned and sauted with capers, baby asparagus, & sundried tomatoes in a lemon wine butter sauce over a pile of rice, tasty and filling. For dessert, we had the NY style cheesecake ($5.50) and the Snickers Bar Blitz Pie ($5.50), both rich desserts with good cups of hot coffee.
