I love this gem. I've been there several times and have had an excellent experience each time. It's cozy and the food is really delicious. It's the big yellow colonial house (built in 1812) located across the street from the On The Run/Mc Donald's near Exit 3. The place is hard to miss! The Windham Restaurant opens for dinner at 5:00 PM, closed on Sundays. We got sat in the side room, which was cold and extremely noisy. We did asked to be moved.There was a group of people there that thought they owned the room. When we first arrived, no one seem to know who our server was going to be. We did finally get a server who is pleasant and well mannered. Service was slow, but that was not the fault of a server. Appetizers were good however, the potato skins were extremely skimpy.Only two potato skins.. I ordered a ribeye. Asked for it to be medium well. I received it medium burnt and dried out . It was also very thin. I did eat it anyway as I was starving. Dessert was delicious and I drinks were good. read more

I haven't been to this restaurant in years so it was nice to be back to a NH icon. My husband and I ate upstairs in the new lounge and it was beautiful. I love the history of the place but with the updated look and feel. It was a Tuesday night and busy but not crowded. Drinks were super and service was excellent. You can tell new ownership takes a lot of pride in the place. My husband had escargot and I had eggplant roulettes, favorites for both of us. Entrees were great too. This place reminds me a lot of Lucky Lou's in Wethersfield, CT... a great historic building, wonderful staff, and good food that they try to upscale in ways we could do without. I had the chicken cordon bleu and mashed potatoes, which were perfectly seasoned and creamy. The chicken was clearly fresh, and the dish was well executed. And then they added an alfredo sauce that detracted from all of it. There was way too much, making the last few bites soggy, and it was mediocre at best, as if it were a scratch dish topped jar sauce --- would have done better without. read more

I think their food alone warrants a 3.5 to 4 star. I'm going to give their deck area a 1 star though, I love the outdoor dining experience but it's impossible to enjoy surrounded by hornets. Great service, very good food, but the outdoor situation needs sorting. I went there with a friend for a couple apps and a cocktail. I got their General gao & their Lamb chops. The General gao was made with good quality chicken, very juicy, crispy, and the sauce was flavorful. It was much better than here than at 99 percent of the local Chinese restaurants I've had it at. The lamb chops were seasoned, tossed in olive oil, and absolutely incredible (next time I'll order them medium rare though). I washed it down with a "French martini" of chambord, vodka, and pineapple juice which was tasty. All in all a good experience. read more

We have driven by this place countless times on the way to The Common Man. This year for our anniversary we decided to give this place a shot based on yelp reviews and some friends comments. I admit I was a bit skeptical. When we arrived, we arrived around opening time as we had other plans after dinner so the place wasn't very busy. However it was extremely clean, and the staff was wonderful. I posted some pictures of our meals which were absolutely outstanding. We ordered: Champagne Calamari Escargot Pork Loin Dinner Rack of Ribs Absolutely everything we ordered was fantastic. In fact the Escargot was better than The Common Mans!! I would absolutely go back here again as I was surprised at how good, fresh and hot the food was. One of the best meals I've had in a long time. Prices were also excellent! Casual cozy, like a the student hangout in highshool, or student center at a small college campus, except with people in their late 30s and up. The dining areas are a bit confusing, but I get that they are trying to offer versatility. They have an upstairs dining area, which I think has an outdoor patio. They have a high-table area next to the bar downstairs, which is also next to a more sit-down dining area. I find this a bit confusing to the newcomer, and I honestly think they should switch it somehow..... maybe have one of them be a taco-only area. Too many options for a newcomer like me is like taking a first-timer to a buffet and saying "PICK ONE ITEM!!" Service is typical of what you'd expect at a small New England town. Friendly, but not too friendly, but it's real. Of course, if you engage in conversation, they eventually warm up. My server happened to grow up on the lake that I'm staying at this summer, so that made for a nice engaging conversation. The menu is simple, and nothing too outlandish, so if you're looking for something simple and standard, like my cheeseburger or wedge salad, you've found it. Oh, but honorable mention on their BBQ wings- they were quite amazing. Ample parking in the back, clean atmosphere, and super cute house..... I know I'll be back. read more

Food and spirits is an apt moniker for this restaurant!! The fish chowder was one of the best I have ever had! The ribeye steak was cooked to perfection!! And....our host took time to introduce the "spirits" by way of tales he's heard and a tour of the attic and cellar where my son, mother and I had our own eerie encounters with cold pockets of air and swinging doors!! I can't say enough great things about this place. Literally, everything on the menu that we've tried has been absolutely delicious. They have an excellent selection of appetizers, so usually when we go we get a few appetizers to split and have that as our meal. The lollipop lamb chops are to die for; I don't normally care for lamb, but these are not gamey at all. They're cooked to your liking and seasoned with rosemary and garlic - we love them! The shrimp and crab cakes are equally delicious, with big chunks of crab and shrimp and very little 'filler.' We tried the shrimp basket for the first time this week and those were delicious as well - they had a very light batter coating, and were very fresh. On prior visits I've had the wedge salad, which is good, and the chicken parm. The parm is HUGE - my husband had two days worth of lunch just from the leftovers! And it's absolutely delicious; my dad loves the veal parm, too. This place is on the pricier side, so if you're coming here for a date night and are planning to have a couple drinks each with apps and an entree, be prepared to spend a minimum of $100. But, I promise it's totally worth it. You can tell that their food is very fresh and high quality. We love it here! read more

Went here last minute for Valentine's Day expecting to be turned away. Found a table for two inside room off the bar area. Had the sirloin special that was cooked perfect (medium rare) and was delicious. It was very busy at 730 when we arrived and our waiter let us know he would be with us soon. We could see him running from one table to the next as the place was packed. We knew service would be slow - but he caught up right away and we had drinks very quickly. We ordered the wedge salad and spring rolls. He brought us the salad very quickly and mentioned he could get this out quick and rolls would be just a few minutes more. He was very attentive despite having the whole room to serve himself Our meals came in a timely manner given the restaurant looked 100% full. My steak was cooked perfectly. Mashed potatoes were ok. I don't like the look when they are scooped out with say an ice cream scoop. It makes them look fake. But they were delicious. The veggies with my meal were green beans and carrot medley. They were cooked al dent and not overcooked at ALL which was a pleasant surprise. My husband had the seafood fettuccine special and that was loaded with shrimp, scallops and lobster. Went Thursday evening to celebrate my husband and I 32 year wedding anniversary. The food was excellent first time customers. Our server had just moved to the area an stated she just started, she was outstanding, very personable told us the story of how it is haunted. We elaborated on Salem Massachusetts and we shared the same interests. We stayed for about two hours and talked with our server , nothing was rushed. Such a great night out. Will be back read more

The fact that this restaurant is haunted only adds to the ambiance. We love the Windham Restaurant, however, for its food and service. The continental-style menus offers a wide variety that would fit any taste, from seafood to chicken parmesan to our favorite, the Chicken Bella Boca, the very definition of comfort food. The restaurant inhabits an old house with pretty rooms, and during the summer we typically eat on the upstairs-outside porch. There is also a wonderful downstairs bar that reminds me of the old TV show Cheers for the friendliness of its regulars. read more

We've been meaning for years to get here, and finally made it early Christmas, 2016. Lovely time to come by with all the seasonal lighting and decorations. Has a very cozy feel inside, in fact could say tight quarters in the vestibule, which is a major traffic route for servers going between the kitchens at the back, dining room on one side of the center staircase and bar on the other side. Constant stream of apologies as staff bump into each other, or while reaching for water glasses from the rack on a table in the corner of the entranceway. There's a second dining room in the addition at the front left side of the house. We didn't see in there. Hostess took us through French doors into the main dining room on the right hand side, finished in lovely muted greys and love those high ceilings of the older homes. The room is elegant and intimate with only a few tables: one for 4-6, a couple for 2 and one for 4. Casual atmosphere, though skipping the jeans for dress trousers wouldn't be out of place. Unfortunately I don't remember our server's name; she was professional, extremely pleasant and efficient. Checked on us frequently. Brought a delicious basket of fresh-from-the-oven focaccia to nosh on. So difficult not to fill up on bread like that! As soon as I saw Village Salad on the menu that was a no-brainer starter. For those not familiar with the term, Village Salad is a true Greek salad, without all the unnecessary lettuce. Don't come across it very often. Love the wonderful and fresh chunky cucumber, tomatoes, Kalamata olives, red onions, sometimes bell peppers and/or pepperoncini (this one had the latter) and of course lots of feta cheese! The croutons in this splendid dish were chunks of delicious focaccia, which soaked up the delectable olive oil. I could have skipped the entrée, it was a big serving. Well worth $8! I was tempted by seafood for my main, but decided to go seasonal with the Butternut Squash Ravioli with Chicken Tenderloins ($19). I half expected it to be on the sweet side with the cranberries and Amaretto butter sauce plus the naturally sweet squash, as I'd had something similar elsewhere a couple of years ago and it was too sweet. Some of the sweet was cut down with the addition of sage, which is one of my favorite herbs. But it was a big serving and after that salad, half came home with me. Made for a nice lunch the next day. :) Spousal unit did his meat and potatoes thing with the steak tips ($19.50). He had requested medium-rare, though they were edging closer to medium. He wasn't bothered by it. He would have preferred more potato to the nice steamed veggies; didn't think to say skip the veg. ;) Half ended up coming home. We could have done without the loud group next to us, particularly when they started talking about crickets as a protein source. Pass the Tums... They have a function room upstairs that can seat 30. And they do family-style meals to order and take home. This will be one of our go-to places for a nice evening out. Went there with a friend for New Year's dinner. Have no complaints about the food....crab and shrimp cakes, baked stuffed shrimp and steak were all cooked to perfection and delicious. The server was efficient but not at all personable. Seemed to be rushed and didn't have time. Just give us our food and get out. Leftovers were put in one bag instead of individual ones for each of us. Had to ask for water glasses to be refilled and for a refill of bread. Just little things that can make an evening a little more memorable. Cramped seating downstairs by the fireplace. We could hear conversations of everyone in the room. Will go again at some point because of the food. Hopefully, service and ambiance will be better. read more

We went a week ago with friends. They sat us up stairs because my gf brought there kids . Railing needs to be fixed going up stairs for 1 . Felt like we were going to fall over. My husband and I got soup of the day chicken noodle it was cold . The bread was good . I got the duck it was good the sides were not great they were cold as well . We were shocked at how bad the service was here when my father took me here for my birthday dinner. Dirty glasses: We got our wine glasses and one of us noticed there was a lipstick stain still on her glass! She asked for another one, and the waitress brought another without apologizing. The second glass ALSO had lipstick. Then we all checked our glasses and mine did too!! We were so grossed out by the dirty dishes. The waitress saw that one of us didn't use our glass and she didn't even ask about it. She DID make a snide remark about washing them herself and that she knew they were clean. Our waitress didn't tell us there were specials, the only reason we found out was because we overheard the waiter next to us read them to his table! Really stinks because the dishes sounded really good. She never came to check on us, we had to flag her down, which made us feel like we were bothering her and she was doing us a favor. All in all she was a mess, rushing all over the place, wasn't warm or pleasant, and didn't make us feel like we were being taken care of or appreciated. This isn't a cheap restaurant, so paying $20+ for an entree I'd expect to at least get clean dishes and hear the specials. The food was not bad, which makes it a bummer that the service gave us such a bad impression. The cheesecake and bread pudding were great! Just not good enough to make me want to go back and endure that service. I don't recommend this place to anyone, really disappointing. read more

Limp salad, weird combinations of flavors (that don't go well together), incorrectly cooked steak (ask for rare and got medium??). The ribeye was more like a dense flavorless strip steak. Service? Apparently because we weren't drinking alcohol we weren't worthy of any attention. Bright smiles and gracious company when we saw her... but that was only 3 times and we had empty glasses majority of the meal. Skip it and head to Old School or the Common Man and just deal with the wait or go to dinner earlier. read more

This is a nicer casual place with some different food options. If you're tired of the chain places in the area, then give this one a try. They have some great soups and some adventurous food options for being in New Hampshire. :) I really liked the escargot that I had last time. Food was good but we were put upstairs in a room with two older couples that wasn't very clean. There are other rooms but they must have been full, maybe! The paint and paper were old and in some cases peeling off, and the carpet was stained and definitely needed cleaning or replacement. Sadly service wasn't very good but our waitress was very nice and since the kitchen was downstairs it took a bit to get service at all and not her fault. Again the food was very good but if I were to return I definitely would either eat in the room downstairs or in the bar unless I was assured the upstairs room was updated, ghosts or not ! read more

We come here now and then for an app and drink. Sitting at the bar or in the addition/ indoor porch type area is much more enjoyable than being in the main dining area. The main dining area is so loud and you're practically sitting on your neighbor, esp when it's a busy night! Average food, and the service sometimes takes a while. It's always busy though!! I really like their salads with the optional add on of a beef, chicken or seafood side. I ordered the baked, stuffed shrimp last time and it was actually stuffed with seafood. Very nice, but a little dry. My hubby's seafood fettuccini sounded great, looked delicious, but some of the seafood in it was still frozen! The fetuccinni was a little too tough. I am sure it was meant to be al dente. We were really surprised, but I am sure they would have made it right if we told the waiter. My husband didn't want to say anything and ate it all as is. This was a great place to eat at. Great food and a really nice old Colonial house setting. The colonial house was built in 1812 and is supposedly haunted. I had an experience in there wasn't a logical explanation for. When I was in the Bathroom, I heard a bunch of jumping on the 2nd floor, so I thought it was a kid messing around. When I'm back from the bathroom, the waiter tells me that there is nobody up there. Despite the experience, I would go back if I didn't live 2,800 miles away in Southern California. read more

This site has changed hands many times over the years. (I loved it as PrayaChada Thai food.) This incarnation is an upscale inn fare. The menu is limited but solid food. The rooms are small and meant for two or four tops....not large parties which is nice. This is a good solid place to eat. We were a party of 7 on a Sat night with a reservation. We were seated upstairs. The food was very good, served hot and everything tasted freshly made except there really shouldn't be parmesan on chicken picata unless requested and it was covered. The service was really lacking. Our server seemed inexperienced and very scattered. She would pass plates down the table, bring one dish at a time and would only clear some of the dishes. We had to ask for additional drinks. We were not even offered water and bread was not a given although it was delicious when we got it. I think the place needs more help or at least for large parties and probably not a good idea to have someone so new. The restroom was out of tp and needed attention. This could be such a great place but they really need to train their servers better and pay attention to the details. We tried calling the restaurant but they were closed for the two days following. read more

My husband and I went on a date night here for the first time 2 years ago. At the time, we lived in the next town over, which, in spite of its size, severely lacks for great food. We were impressed with both the romantic atmosphere and the best chicken marsala we ever had. He really liked the drink he got as well, it was a pear martini. We had been there twice since then, once with family visiting from out of town, and each time we were disappointed by our meals. They were just...okay. We were hoping that was just a fluke, and decided to give it a go again last night when we went on a double date with friends, since we now live down the street. Let me start by saying that the bread basket we got was good - a light and fluffy bread with herb butter. Everyone but me ordered drinks, the two guys loved the Green Monster martinis. The sangria just tasted like red wine with an orange thrown in, nothing spectacular. We ordered three appetizers. The couple we went with love seafood and thoroughly enjoyed their escargot and calamari. My husband and I ordered sweet potato fries, which were forgotten, apparently the waitress did not hear us, so they came late. They were limp, cold, and tasteless. I wish we hadn't bothered to remind her. Our meals came out. The other couple ordered the pork tenderloin and a shrimp portofino dish. The only reason this review got two stars is because they enjoyed their food and drinks. We did not share their good experience. I decided to branch out from the marsala and try the pork tenderloin as well. It was WAY overcooked and dry. The maple glaze and cranberry sauce on top gave it an overly sweet flavor. I took two bites and left it. Luckily the garlic mashed potatoes and green beans that accompanied it were good or I might have left hungry! The waitress never came back to ask us how everything was until almost the end of the meal. Now for the worst part. My husband ordered a strip steak, medium rare. He cut into it and it was RAW. It had barely been browned on the outside! It was also a really tough cut of beef, I have gotten better at Shaw's! We hate sending things back or complaining, so he ate some of my pork, which he found to be slightly more appealing than the steak. When the waitress finally came back around, saw that it was untouched, and asked if it was okay, he showed her the steak. She seemed surprised and asked him if she could get him anything else. We needed to leave for a show, so we didn't have time for that, and then she asked if he wanted to take it home!! We all got a good laugh from this. Was he supposed to take it home and cook it himself? To her credit, I think asking people if they want to take unfinished food home is just habit for waitstaff, but still very odd in this situation. The female friend we were with is a waitstaff manager at a restaurant and I was a little embarrassed. She was certain his severely undercooked meal would be taken off the bill. Nope! Instead, two of us were offered free desserts. I am pretty sure no two desserts on the menu came close to the $19.00 inedible meal, but thanks for at least SOMETHING. $19.00 is not a bad price for a decent meal, but NOT for a raw, bad cut of meat flopped on a plate. We knew we were not going to be home for several hours, so we asked for a dessert that would travel well. She recommended either the tiramisu or the limoncello cake. We opted for the tiramisu. Sadly, it came with whipped cream on it, even though we asked for something that wouldn't spoil being unrefrigerated for awhile, so the token apology desserts were a bit of a fail. All of this for $20.00 short of $200.00 with tax and tip! Not a good experience at all. I still like the atmosphere, but we all agreed that due to the poor service and disappointing meals, along with the limited menu that doesn't seem to change much, we would be unlikely to go back. For anyone that does decide to go, I highly recommend the marsala, and hope that has not gone downhill, too! read more
