So, this is a pretty complete reversal of my previous review, but likely due to an almost complete turnover in staff and approach. I am now on a first name basis with staff and feel very welcome. I really like the descriptions of the wines. (there is a little placard by each wine, describing the wine completely, where it is from, etc. ). It has helped me educate myself on the numerous group varietals out there. I also appreciate having my info on file, including my purchase history in case I can't remember the name of that amazing chardonnay I had two weeks ago. Staff is great. BEWARE OF OWNER NOBU. I wanted to alert EVERYONE to the negative experience I encountered at the Winery. Unfortunately, Nobu, the owner, compounded a bad situation by making an egregious comment. This is the second incident where I have taken note of the poor customer relationship management by the Winery's owner. The ONLY reason I made the decision to continue patronizing their establishment after the initial incident was due to the great management and staff. (Eric & Angela--The delivery person has been phenomenal as well) But, as much as I appreciate their efforts to over compensate for the lack of decorum and social graces of the owner, I can no longer endure supporting poor business practices. In this economic downturn it is reprehensible that a fellow business owner and neighbor would treat their value and volume clients without proper regard. I've shopped here twice now and I love it. I have 2 wine shops much closer to my house, but I'll walk 3 times as far to buy wine from Sol at The Winery. (The first time I was there, Sol and another woman of a certain age were working--he was super, she was bitchy, so avoid her if you can.) The selection is great. Prices are fair. Everything is masterfully organized and easy to navigate. No wandering around wondering "where can I find Spanish whites?" It's easy to find exactly what you're looking for. And then if you don't know what you're looking for, the note cards describing each wine on the shelf are super helpful. Support this local biz. It's great. read more

I went in to taste some wine with a friend, and enjoyed the taste of a bottle I ended up buying. When I went to pay, I used the reader of a gift card. The man who was helping me was kind but the other employee kept making nasty faces at me. He was extremely rude and condescending. A beautifully decorated and well-stocked wine store specializing in little-known and budget-friendly priced wines, in my neighbourhood? Yes, please! They have great hours and a nice location. Coming out of the 116th subway stop, I find myself directly in front of their door, so it can't really be any more convenient to stop their on my way home when I need a bottle of wine. The staff is generally very friendly and helpful. They are especially talented at food pairings and are willing to listen to my "menu" and then recommend a few wines that would pair well to whatever I might be cooking. Upon a recent visit, however, I accidentally took a bottle from their refrigerator and was chastised by the lady working for going against their "system". Then the bottle was more than I have paid for it in the past and when I tried to ask her about it, she snapped "We've never sold this wine for that price". OK... I'm sure that in her opinion she knew what she was talking about on both points. I don't work there so I can't pretend to be an expert. But as far as customer service goes, it was a bit surprising to be criticized for my actions as I'm handing over my credit card. This is an isolated incident in my experience and I will keep visiting the Winery. Though, I sincerely hope that this level of "customer service" remains an isolated incident, and does not become a rule. read more

I did a ton of research a few years ago, searching for a specific champagne from France and found out The Winery was the only "local" place that could order it. I live about 2 1/2 hours south of this location. I've ordered it twice from this store. I found myself in a tight bind and needed a case of it STAT. This is not something the store carries, however they can special order it. You are required to purchase a case, at upwards of $200 - I'm not talking about 1 bottle of $10 wine here! Bottom line is this: The manager was rude and in the middle of me explaining to her that I understand my emergency is not her problem, she interrupted me and asked how quickly I needed it? STAT - I can be in NY Saturday. This was Tuesday. I'm writing this review as of Thursday. The reason I'm writing this review "only two days later" is this champagne takes awhile to be delivered to their store. I e-mailed them on Saturday and heard nothing Called on Monday and was told to call back Tuesday. I sill haven't heard anything from them (after speaking to the manger about my urgent need). Thanks for NOT helping a customer that is a huge supporter of small businesses. One willing to drive 2 1/2 hours One Way to get this champagne. You don't ever have to worry about hearing from me again. Thanks for *not* helping me during a time when I needed it most. Go to Harlem Vintage, Winery must have left the customer service at the old location. Went there today(Sunday) and found a sign on the door stating that the employee was on a bathroom break. Never seen that in NYC before, but not surprising for Harlem. After waiting 10-12 minutes the employee comes to the door and removes the sign. Surprisingly she doesn't open the door ,welcome us in and thank us for waiting. Instead she justs walks away and leaves me wondering if I should walk away also. I go in and after mentioning that I thought maybe she had gone next door , I'm replied with the series of attitude statements all to familiar to customers shopping in this neighborhood. The manager of IHOP told me that you can hire pleasant employees but its work. Kudos to him. I hope the Cava I bought takes away the bitter taste I left there with. Mgmt should know they lost a customer and focus on who they leave to represent them. Go to Harlem Vintage or IHOP if you want to know what customer service is like. read more

I'm so excited this place opened up. True, there was another wine store already, but competition breeds quality, and that is exactly what this store has brought. I ended up speaking to the owner Nobu for quite a while (he's a really nice guy) and really has a passion for what he does. You can tell from the way the store looks and feels that Nobu really is quite into what he does. I usually buy bottles under $20 each due to my budget constraints and never get any attitude when I have to use a card (I rarely have cash). They are so much nicer here than at Harlem Vintage. They have a variety of bottles in the $10-$12 range. They always have at least a couple bottles open for tasting, even if it isn't an "official" tasting day. They send out cute emails that I actually read. They put your info in their computer and then whenever you buy something it gets recorded on your account so they can help you remember something good that you bought when you don't remember its name! I've only ever seen one guy working there, and although he's not the owner, he is very friendly and knowledgeable. I only wish that they had a bigger selection, but it's a small shop and they seem to change it up a lot, so that's good enough for me! read more

Brilliant shop. Most any wine for less than $20, with excellent advice, free. This tiny shop is a staple for a half-dozen friends and I. Love how they have us on file and we can rate/remember our purchases for later deals. I even got a call from them once when a favorite wine of mine was in the last of its inventory and was discounted. Whoo! This is my go to place to buy wine. Despite the size of the store, it carries a wonderful selection that often changes. Every time I purchase a bottle of wine here it is delicious and better than what I had anticipated. Additionally, the store is open fairly late, 11 pm Friday and Saturday, and until 10 pm other days. Went there one night to get a few cold bottles of bubbly and was told only "one cold bottle" per customer... they were adamant about it. Lost me as a customer right there.
