I went in with my friend from the neighborhood to buy a box of wine for my wife's birthday. The owner was helpful in pointing out some wines to try. I enjoy the tastings and learn something new every time I come in. When picking out twelve bottles someone in the store asked if she could come to the party that I was going to... The small local business is a safe space where its okay to be a wine neophyte, and come out with some great wine at an honest price. Great selection of South African wines. read more

Wonderful small wine shop! The staff are super friendly and they know their wine; I also like their wine 'categories' that they denote with little stickers on the lables: -biodynamic or organic wines -WOMEN wine makers -wines discontinuing when their current stock is out -sweet wines -and maybe some other one... The selection is not huge, but if you are in the mood to just see what they have and try something new, it is perfect. They had one wine available for self-serve tasting when I went too, so that is a fun perk. It also helps that I live nearby...and that it is right out of the 116th subway station. read more

I love walking into this wine shop. They are always very knowledgeable about their wines. They are always very welcoming when I enter the store. They are affordable to very expensive. They even keep a history of my purchases (completely voluntary - they ask if you would like this free feature) that they use to give me reminders. I don't know how many times I walked in trying to remember the name of the really good wine I got last time but forgot to jot down the name. They can seriously teach a class on wine. I usually walk in wine ignorant and leave wine pseudo expert. They don't have the biggest selection or well known wineries like Kendall Jackson but sell local wines or wines produced in the same region as your favorite. Also they have TWO days of wine tastings - Friday evening and Saturday. And a wine club! And you can order delivery from Jado Sushi down the block and tag on a bottle of wine from their store. I love The Winery. It's immediately in front of the subway station, I love the decor, ESPECIALLY the black chandelier and mirrored furniture, and every time I've been there, the staff has been very friendly. I have usually seen the lady with the pixie cut. The Friday night wine tasting is a fun treat, and I've gotten good recommendations on wine, although I generally prefer to stick to their written descriptions. I also like that they use a Mac (from what I remember) at the register. I don't find the prices to be too steep, but I'm used to buying wine on the UWS, so maybe I'm just happy that it's less at The Winery! read more

This is my neighborhood wine store, and I love it....and not just because my roomie and I are on first name basis with the staff haha. The staff here is what makes this store different from other wine stores. All the staff members are very friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and not snooty like you sometimes find in wine shops (especially when you're buying cheap wine). They carry some interesting and diverse wines, so don't be afraid to ask for suggestions and try new stuff. All the recommendations I've been given have been great. They also store your name in their system, which is helpful if you want to look up any of your previous purchases or put any notes in your file. They offer free wine tastings on Friday evenings. They also offer a package where you can get 12 different bottles of wine (6 red and 6 white) for $100. I believe they change up the bottles, but we loved the selection we got. They deliver too! Overall, it's a nice, well-maintained store. If I ever moved away from this neighborhood, I'd definitely miss this place. read more

Much thanks for opening such a beautiful store in our neighborhood. The owners personal style and upbeat personality has made the simple task of choosing wine a pleasure. The manager Eric's in-depth knowledge of wines surpasses any other wine store in the area. If you have a favorite wine that they do not carry, just ask Eric or Nobu and they will suggest a similar wine that will surpass the wine you were looking for. Terrible customer service! Despite 10+ visits, I have now, twice, been subject to a suspiciously inconsistent photo ID policy (to accompany credit card). I asked about the inconsistency after watching two customers before me who were not asked for ID. The explanation was disingenuous and condescending. I'll take my business elsewhere! The Winery was already a breath of fresh air in Harlem's old-fashioned (at best) liquor landscape, now it's officially a true jewel because they have hired Tyrone Carter (yes THE Tyrone from Martin Bros on 107th and Broadway) as a salesperson! Tyrone is the most exquisite knowledgeable wine salesman I have ever met in my 17 years living in Manhattan. There hasn't been one wine that Tyrone recommended to me that hasn't lived up to my expectations and more. I used to be a frequent customer at The Winery, in spite of the fact that I have never really got a great vibe from the place. At one point there was no A/C in the store for months one summer - not a very good sign for a wine store! Regardless, it was convenient. After months of buying wine there we noticed a pattern started to develop and I was getting more than the occasional "bad bottle." After spending thousands of dollars, like an idiot, I finally brought one of the bottles in the store, it was basically vinegar, and asked for an exchange and the manager refused. I mentioned that I was a regular customer and this was happening way too frequently. He shrugged and said "it happens." Well it happens, but not THAT often. I'm not sure where they store the wine, or what's going on there, but I have never gone back. They are totally RUDE. Harlem Vintage is up the street a few blocks. They have an pretty good selection and say hello when I walk in. They even have dog treats. It's the little things in life people! Go there instead. read more
