It pains me to have to give a meh review to a local independent eatery... but the cleanliness is only so so and the burger is really below average compared to Chicagoland. The burger patty is pre cooked and reheated for plating. The patty itself is nearly flavorless. The toppings are relatively fresh, but not high quality enough to elevate the quality of the burger by compensating for the patty. I would probably give this place another try to test out other menu items, but I'm not holding my breath. read more

My first time eating at the Works was probably September of '96. I got asked by some juniors and seniors of GBS stage crew if I was hungry and wanted to go with them to eat before getting dropped off after some long hours of working back stage. I remember having no idea what I should order. I knew Italian beef was good and ordered that. That became my typical order as the high school went on. Sometimes I'd order their chicken sandwich. I always ordered root beer and onion rings. I didn't "know" what a Chicago dog was. I didn't know how good gyros tasted.... I grew up a sheltered kid Today I took my 21 month old, her first time. We live in California now. We were home for a family visit and The Works was on the list of 'places to eat'. Pequod's is always on that list, mission accomplished. BuJoe's didn't, make it. But somehow Barnaby's snuck in there (I seriously thought they were all closed!!). Dairy bar, can't avoid it... The Works, we got lucky. Very glad we made it this time! I had a gyro sandwich with fries and a cherry coke. Wife isn't an adventurous eater so she had a double cheese burger. We ordered mozzarellas ticks to share. Baby JJ saw me dipping fries in ketchup and requested some for herself. She mostly stuck to the fries and a couple of burger bites. For some reason she would not try any gyro! I was bummed. Fantastic spot. Had the one pound gyro last week and it was exceptional. Perfect amount of Pitas I got the 3 sandwiches out of it. And was delicious the next day. And this is a Chicago Beef. Lots of places screw this east recipe up but they don't. Fresh bread, beef is dipped and not bathed. And the bathrooms are clean. So it's a easy 5 stars. As far as prices they suck everywhere. My mom worked at the school across the street and we went all the time when I was kid. When I had to come back to the area I drove passed and said no way! The best place to enjoy gyros!! I have been going here as a child and practically ran back there on my recent trip to Chicago. The homemade Tzatziki sauce, raw onions, gyro meat and pita bread lightly toasted in the gyro meat juice is something that needs to be experienced in one's life. Opened in 1978...it's almost 40 years since they opened and some of the employees are still working there for 35 years. I realized later that they have the 1# meat gyro sandwich too and that'll be my next visit's dish! So far I've not made it past the gyros to try something else but will really need to next time I'm there. They're always busy and I'm sure it's cause everything is so good! No, no, no. After 30 years of eating here, the new owners FAIL!!! The once delicious Greek vinaigrette salad dressing has been replaced with an overly sweet balsamic vinaigrette. As the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I won't be back. read more

This is an average fast food / Greek joint with fairly low prices and fairly large portions (not super generous sizes though and not super low prices). Decor is acceptable, nothing to write home about but sufficient for this type of restaurant. Cooking speed was alright (not Portillos fast, but fairly fast) and ordering process was slightly confusing. The food itself was pretty similar to what I'd find anywhere else in the area at a similar restaurant (like Dengeos). Overall the flavors were pretty simple without any additional complexity and textures were acceptable. Here are some quick thoughts I items I tried: Chicken with pasta shells soup: Simple chicken broth with a few herbs - pasta was too soft. Fries: Tasteless and not very crisp. Doesn't really have a strong potato flavor. Italian beef: Alright - there was a good amount of juice and beef was soft but nothing stood out. Fairly generous amount of meat. Char burger: Patties were cooked too dry, didn't really get any char in terms of texture or flavor. Steak burger: Steak was cooked alright, not overcooked. Once again, lacking in flavor but toasting the bread was a nice touch. Gyros and pork kebab: Gyros were alright, nothing special. Would've been much nicer if the meat was crisped up on the grill. Pork kebab was a bit on the dry side. Overall, it's an okay place to stop by if you're in the area - but I don't think it's as good as the other Yelp reviews suggest. read more

I came a few days later to try their gyro. Now this is more like it. The sauce was great, it came with 2 tomatoes and packed full with gyro meat. I would have preferred less onions but other than that this is one of the best gyros I've had in a really long time. read more

While the sandwich was much better this time, they changed the crinkle cut fries to some greasy, non- textured brand. A very unassuming place tucked away in a strip mall with a Walgreens, pool hall, and Burlington Coat Factory. The Works is totally a casual establishment with quick service and relatively friendly. I have only been a couple of times, and so far, so good! The first time I had a gyros. I do have a favorite gyros from another place, but I thought this one was really good. I would totally get it again! The second time I went, I got the chargrilled cheddar burger and cheese fries! Yummm! The burger was pretty good. But, the cheese fries were sooooo good! They reminded me of the cheese fries from a hot dog place that is no longer open in the city. I have craved those fries for years and I am so happy I now found a replacement! The fries were fresh and piping hot! My ONLY critique is that I had my order to go and the fries are put directly into a styrofoam container. The fries were SO hot that the bottom of the styrofoam container was melting. That is sooooo not good for you! They should put a layer of parchment paper in it or something. But, kudos to them for fresh fries! :) I will definitely go back to try more of their items. read more

Was really craving a gyros and this place has always been on my list of places to check out. Unfortunately living in the city and trying to venture out to the suburbs for food, never the ideal situation. But what do you know I was in the suburbs and place was on the way going back home to the city. I ordered the gyros sandwich and a side of cheese fries. Now the gyros, my goodness, one of the best gyros meats I ever had! The meat is thick, it's juicy and tastes fresh. It was delicious!! I was impressed. All these years living next to a Pita Inn and eating at Mr. Greeks at 2 AM...I have finally know what it feels like to eat an amazing gyros. Based on a lot of the reviews I also got cheese fries. The cheese fries were very much left to be desired. Not sure what the hype is. Based on all these reviews thought we were getting some Merkt's cheddar cheese fries or something similar but it was basically your nacho cheese that I used to get from the dorms. I stopped by here yesterday around 7:00pm and they were busy with many carry out orders but the staff was efficient and friendly. I ate the gyros plate which came with fries, it was very tasty. I was still hungry, having not eaten all day, so I ordered fried mushrooms, which were also very good. Three cooks were getting out the orders quickly while a young lady was efficiently taking the orders and handling the register. I ate my meal inside, the tables were clean and the food came quickly. The place was especially clean, including the rest rooms. Nice place to eat. I will stop by again, the next time that I'm in the Glenview area. Five stars. read more

Have been going to this place for over 19 years. New owner has such a bad attitude. Never smiles, rude acts as though he is doing you a favor. Gyros have gotten much smaller, hot dog must have just been put on water or steamer was cold. Time to find a new place this "Works" has a cold feel. I used to tutor in the area, and The Works has always been my go-to lunch spot :D This place in a plaza off of Golf offers Grecian specialties (gyros and the pork shishkabobs), Athenian chicken, fried shrimp, fish, salads, sandwiches, hot dogs, and sides (such as tamales, onion rings, garlic bread, and chicken tenders). I've tried their Char Cheddar Burger, their Cheddar Dog, the Polish, the Pizza Puffs (of course!), as well as their gyros. All are pretty tasty and are cooked to-order. The staff here are also pretty friendly and efficient, and there are plenty of seating inside for you to sit down and chow down on your food.
