    Pepper-Salted Squid

This is one of those "if you know, you know" places. My family took me here when I was a kid and I've been obsessed with their salt and pepper squid ever since. I've tried countless other salt pepper squid places across the country and nothing compares. It has the perfect combination of crispiness and chewiness - the squid is cut to a perfect size where it's not too big or not too small. Also the perfect blend of saltiness, pepperiness, and just enough sweetness. If you ever come here and not order the salt and pepper squid, you're doing yourself a huge disservice. Just look around and see how literally everyone else is eating the same thing. Oh and shout out to our server - we forgot our to-go box of food on the table and she ran out to our car with it right before we left.

I've been going to this place since early 2000's as a kid growing up, due to going to the Grotto every Sunday. I've seen this place at its peak, and how it has slowed down over the years. Since COVID I have only gotten take out. I go for the pepper salted squid. Is it as good as when I had it as a kid? I'd say no, but still the best place to get it. I tend to go right at opening and order it before arriving. It always made fresh. The quality is always delicious. I live about 30-40mins away, and I will make the trip for just the squid. Pro tip, take it out of the bag to avoid condensation.

This use to be bomb here ! Salt and paper squid was best in the city and/or ever !!!!!!!! Bad news....not any more. After Covid prices was going up and up for it. NOW $22 for an order of salt and pepper squid ! Look at the photo...very over fried and prob using old oil to fry it. Taste burnt ! I think I'm done from here ...will try another spot in Troutdale. To top it off of high prices ...they now charge you 2.5% for using a credit card, a nice kick in the balls after you eat it ! Other pict was 9 years ago look at the difference. Sad but true this was prob last time we get it from here. Original owners retired ....and so are we !!!

No frills here, and that's alright by me. Everytime you go, you HAVE to have the pepper salted squid if nothing else! We usually get vibes brocalli in garlic & oyster sauce & a bowl of rice, that's all you need! The PSS- IS ADDICTIVE, so don't say that I didn't warn you!

Thien Hong is one of the restaurants that I frequented with my family when I was growing up in the Portland area. I remember their salt and pepper squid was so delicious that we always had to order two plates. We used to joke that the salt was actually cocaine because it was so addicting. I moved away more than a decade ago, but on my most recent trip back, I wanted a taste of nostalgia again. The decor hasn't changed a bit. We ordered a spread of snow pea leaves, crispy chow mein, a few dim sum pieces, walnut shrimp, and of course, their signature dish, the salt and pepper squid. The fried squid pieces were pretty small. I remember the squid pieces being a lot larger a long time ago, but the flavor is relatively the same and is still good. I think this dish is the thing that keeps people coming back, but otherwise, their other dishes are pretty average in comparison to other Cantonese restaurants that you can go to in the Portland area. Thien Hong is worth a visit if you want to try salt and pepper squid that can't be replicated anywhere else.

Yes, yes & yes! Every time I've come here when visiting Oregon from California in the last 2 1/2 years this place was only serving to-go orders due to the plandemic. So I would only order two pepper-salted calamari orders. I'm happy to say this summer I got to come by when they're doing indoor seating again! The lady at the front greeted us immediately as we walked in with a smile and seated us at our table. All of the employees seemed to be happy and grateful that they get to serve customers inside again! The ambience is still the same as it was before, old school family owned Chinese restaurant. And everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! I want to go back before we go back home to California this Sunday lol

Classic Chinese spot that has been around for years in Portland. The Salt and Pepper Squid is the reason to always come back. Wide range of options. Service has been much better with new ownership.

Had a great experience here! Even with our large group of 14, the service was impressively fast--we got our food within 10-15 minutes. The food was fantastic, and the sweet and sour catfish soup stood out as my favorite. We had tofu enoki, salted pepper and squid, honey walnut shrimp, and a couple of noodle dishes and almost everything is gone. I forgot to take pictures of the actual food, but here are a couple of shots of the aftermath! The atmosphere was no-nonsense vibe but the waitresses were friendly

Are they still in business? Tried to call on May, June & this month but no one answers the phone? I live all the way in Seattle so I want to call first to make sure they're open

They are back open! Just went in today. They closed for a moment to "remodel".

Measured against San Francisco Chinese I give it 4 stars. Measuring it against Chinese in towns like my own Sacramento, I give it 4.5 stars. Love that they offer a Mu Shu chicken option because I don't eat pork - it was really good. A little too heavy on the onion (and the onion was in large pieces instead of blending in more with the dish as I'm used to), but it was still fabulous. The hand cut noodles were as great as advertised - definitely get at least mild spice to get more flavor than the no spicy (that's on me, I'm scared of what Asian restaurants think is "hot," especially Thai and Indian, so I will wasn't taking any chances with it and said no spice). Hubby said bathroom needs a deep clean and maybe a refresh so deducted a bit from that. Service was prompt and nice and not lurking which I appreciate. Lots of tables with Chinese people eating which is always a good sign in my book.

Since we had our dog with us, we ordered everything to go and enjoyed it back at our hotel just down the street. Just a heads up if you're planning the same, there wasn't any outdoor dining available. Being from the SF Bay Area, one of the first things we looked for was Har Gow and Siu Mai, but they weren't labeled the way we're used to. After asking, we found out the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings are their Har Gow, and the Shrimp Siu Mai contains pork, which was exactly what we were looking for. We ordered two of each. We also ordered two Beef Chow Fun, Combination Fried Rice, Eggplant with Minced Pork, Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs, and three pear sodas. The dim sum absolutely hit the spot. The Har Gow and Siu Mai were well seasoned, nicely prepared, and exactly what we had been craving. The Beef Chow Fun was another winner. We were glad we ordered two because we found ourselves reaching for it more than the fried rice. The Eggplant with Minced Pork was also delicious. The eggplant was cooked perfectly -- tender without becoming mushy -- and the seasoning was right on point. I'm also glad we changed our order from the House Special Spare Ribs to the Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs. Unlike many versions, these weren't battered and fried, so the pork maintained a great texture while still being coated in a flavorful sweet and sour sauce. One unexpected favorite was the pear soda. It's made with Asian pear, so the flavor is much lighter and more refreshing than the sweeter pear sodas we're used to. The only hiccup? They're bottled with a traditional cap, and since we were staying in a hotel, we quickly realized we didn't have a bottle opener. Let's just say we got a little creative. One thing I really appreciated was that the staff noticed our large takeout order and packed it thoughtfully. They included six extra takeout containers, plenty of forks, chopsticks, and napkins, which ended up being incredibly helpful since we were eating in a hotel room with no paper plates or utensils. It's a small gesture, but one that definitely didn't go unnoticed. Overall, we were really happy with our meal. This place lived up to being on my bookmark list for over a year, and I'd happily come back the next time we're staying in downtown Portland.

The service was good and the staff was attentive during our visit. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: Hand-Ripped Youpoo Noodle: The absolute star of the meal. The wide, hand-ripped noodles had the perfect chewy texture you look for. They were tossed in a deeply savory, slightly spicy chili oil sauce and topped with a generous amount of perfectly seasoned minced beef and fresh bok choy. It was incredibly satisfying and a must-order. Popcorn Chicken: This was a bit of a letdown. While it looked golden brown and came with a sweet chili dipping sauce, it was not special at all and lacked any unique flavor or punch compared to the other dishes. Spicy Chili Oil Wontons: These were packed with flavor! The wonton wrappers were delicate, and the filling was juicy. They were swimming in a robust, aromatic chili oil that had a nice kick and a touch of vinegar sharpness. Why 4 stars instead of 5? While the noodles and wontons were excellent and the service was good, the atmosphere was a bit uncomfortable. The restaurant was completely empty when we went, but it was super cold inside because the window was wide open. Between the chilly draft and the fairly generic popcorn chicken, it misses out on a full 5 stars.
