I'm always on the lookout for donut shops that offer more variety than just your basic flavors, so I was very excited to learn about Thirsty Whale. They have so many options! I really enjoyed the Elvis donut (peanut butter frosting with banana filling). I'll definitely be back to try more donuts in the future. One thing that would have improved my experience today was that there is nothing on Thirsty Whale's website saying that they're not allowing customers into the lobby for takeout orders. A google search shows they're accepting takeout and delivery, so I figured since there was nothing saying their lobby was closed, we'd be able to place our orders for takeout at the shop. When we arrived we were told we had to phone in our orders or place them online. So we ended up looking at the menu and called in the order from the car right in front of the shop. I counted three other customers doing the same while standing outside the shop. It would be really helpful if the business updated their website making their current COVID-19 practices clear to customers to avoid any confusion and surprises. I'm definitely in support of Thirsty Whale keeping employees and visitors safe, it just would have been a time saver to know in advance what to expect. read more

Nice local bakery. My mom & I usually stop by on Saturday mornings. Very tiny space, grab and go type bakery, nothing too fancy about the shop. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. They have a ton of donut options, which I love. I can try something new every time I stop by. The donuts are always fresh and they are fairly priced. They do a box deal for so many donuts for $10. Around Christmas they had cute little themed donuts, which i'm sure they do for other holidays as well. They make cakes, cupcakes and other bake goods. I'll give the Thirsty Whale two thumbs up for their unique creations. I wasn't disappointed in the Malibu (lemon filled bismark with raspberry frosting), or the classic glazed. Both were good donuts. As a donut fan, however, they didn't rise to the top of my list for "best donuts" ever. They were straight-forward, what you'd expect donuts in some interesting flavors (Samoa, Elvis - peanut butter and banana, and many others). Some were pretty pricey for a single donut. I love that little neighborhood bakeries like this exist, and it's clear from their bakery case that they make some pretty unique items - from donuts to cakes. This review is strictly for their donuts. I think I went in with way too high expectations and was super disappointed. The cinnamon twist was heavy. The old fashioned, ladyfinger and cake donuts tasted like stale oil, they reminded me of a corndog booth at the state fair on the last day. Stopped by Thirsty Whale Bakery on Saturday morning (around 10am) to get a couple treats. The stop is tiny! There was a line of about 10 people so we were all packed like sardines in the tiny shop. They had donuts, cookies, muffins, cupcakes, cakes, and loaves of bread. All the treats looked so tasty! I went with two cupcakes this time around: one red velvet and one blueberry lemon. Both of these cupcakes were delicious!! The blueberry lemon one was so refreshing and the perfect flavors together. I will definitely be back to try the donuts, cookies and cinnamon rolls!! We grabbed our doughnuts this morning as part of the Thirsty Whale's January 9th pop-up. Placing our order via their IG/website was so easy earlier this week. We indicated our pickup time and then went to their location in MPLS this morning. Pickup was seamless. There was a bit of a wait since 9 am proved to be a busy pick-up time, but it was definitely less than 10 min. We ordered four of their specialty doughnuts: maple bacon, salted caramel mocha, strawberry doh!nut, and key lime. They were all amazing but if we're picking favorites, the strawberry flavor was so fresh and explodes in your mouth. And, the key lime....oh the key lime. The custard was soo fresh and not too tart. I wish we would've ordered more of these! Keep an eye out for their next pop-up! And, if you're in the area it was really easy to drive to Corner Coffee to have a fresh cup to go with your doughnuts. Ok so first off, I want to say I have previously not heard of Thirsty Whale nor had I obviously tried it. It was a gamble for me to call and order over the phone. I had a number of issues trying to reach out to a handful of other bakeries by email, through yelp, and messaging their business pages and having any sort of effort in them calling me at all or having long portions of time before I would get a reply. When I tried to get pricing at one they said no one there could give me a quote, so then I had to call another location to try to get the quote there. The couple of quotes I did manage to get were pricy and their delivery fees cost almost as much as the cake which could have been more of a location issue as I do think Thirsty Whale is somewhat close to the restaurant I wanted the cake delivered to. The girl who answered the phone was incredibly kind and helpful, she gave me recommendations, immediately gave me price quotes for both the custom cake and delivery and it ended up being cheaper than one of the cake alone quotes I had gotten! I was able to have my payment processed and a receipt sent to my email in less than 10 minutes. It was incredibly quick, easy, and painless to do with TW. They said they would deliver the cake the day of my partners surprise dinner between 3-6 pm that day, to the restaurant. I had no idea what to expect when I opened the box as I gave them free reign on the design. I only stated I wanted the cake to be a Barca soccer theme and for there to say Happy 30th Birthday Tj somewhere on it. The cake first off was visually stunning. My partner and I absolutely loved it and everyone else did too, they did an amazing job and completely nailed it aesthetically. Now on to the taste! My partner really only likes cream cheese frosting which limits the kind of cake we can get so I went with red velvet, there's a filling in the cake and option wise the girl on the phone said either cream cheese frosting or cream cheese curd I think? Well I said you choose, and she did the curd. The cake was moist, the frosting wasn't too heavy or too sweet. Honestly I think I might have to commission them for our future wedding cake once! They have a number of "glam doughnuts" of various styles, but the thing that keeps me returning is the old fashioned doughnuts. This bakery was highly recommended to me by a close friend. Their response time is terrible. I have been waiting for a response for weeks. I have sent follow up emails and they don't reply. They told me they are busy but also said they were able to accommodate my request, which is just a cake for a baby shower. I told them I trust their creativity so I didn't ask for anything special or extra. I finally emailed them again, asking to let me know if they don't have time and that I understand if they are too busy, just let me know so I can find somewhere else in time. No response again. I emailed Queen of Cakes and got a fast and professional response and they have been fabulous to work with. A little while back, creations from this bakery were flooding my Instagram feed. I'm more of an ice cream person when it comes to my sugar intake, but the beautiful donuts from here caught my eye. Unfortunately, the shop is located quite far from where I reside. However, the other day, I was in the area and an alert in my brain went off to make sure that I took advantage of the opportunity to stop in. (It just goes to show how powerful those Instagram food influencers are. Ha!) I thought that the bakery was easy to locate and was pleased to see street parking available right in front of the store, especially since it was lightly raining. I didn't know what to expect for the interior, so I was a bit surprised by the limited space. It was just an entry area with some goodies on a shelf, a display case and lots of trays of donuts behind the counter. I wasn't trying to hang out, but just in case you are, there's not any seating. The selection of treats was spectacular! It was really difficult deciding what to choose, but I ended up with the Malibu and a lemon poppy seed one. I tried some of each and since they both incorporate lemon, they paired well together. (I don't think donut pairing is a thing, but I just made it one.) I'd been drawn to the Malibu because it had my favorite colors on top. The icing was berry flavored while the inside had a lemon filling. Sometimes donuts can surprise you when you bite into them and end up with a bunch of filling oozing out at you, but there was a perfect ratio in this one. While that donut was quite soft and delicate, the lemon poppy seed one was more firm. I really enjoyed the contrast of textures when tasting them together. I also liked the subtle glaze on the lemon poppy seed. The donuts were definitely sweet, but the mild tartness of the lemon balanced it out so that it wasn't overpowering. All in all, I'm super glad that my brain decided to remember this place when I was nearby. In the future, I'd totally make a trip here just for the donuts. If you like sweets, please do yourself a favor and stop here! It's a wonderful option that stands out in the realm of Twin Cities sweets and you can sense the care that goes into each delicious item. read more

I was so excited to come try this place after they blew up on my Instagram feed after starting to sell donuts, and whenever that happens there's a little concern that they won't live up to the hype. Yet, Thirsty Whale Bakery totally lived up to my hopes. When we arrived we were able to park right on the street so that was no trouble, but there was a small line (it moved very fast though!). Once inside we were momentarily overwhelmed by the flavor options as they don't have a menu online or describe them on the menu board so you have to rely on the person helping you to tell you what everything was. I'd love if they had some way to see flavors and fillings and such so you could order a bit faster! To help with that, I'll try to describe any flavors I had and what I can remember her saying about the different ones. As for the donuts, wow! I got six different ones and how impressed I was varied highly but what won me over was the glazed old-fashioned. It was amazing. They had such a perfect crispy edge. Those bits at the edges of an old-fashioned that are the best crispied little bits? The whole donut was like that. It was so good. The F-Bomb (which is a fudgy, chocolatey mess! It's a chocolate donut with a chocolate/fudge filling and chocolate frosting). It was very, very good! The flavor is really rich, but I didn't find it overly sweet like some chocolate frosting. The Elvis was also great. It's a banana-filled donut with a peanut-butter frosting. I loved this one. The banana filling was filling intensely flavored, so not for someone who doesn't LOVE banana, but I do so I was thrilled. The Malibu was lemon filled. The Persian and Sawmill Sally I've confused, but one of them was a long john with nuts on top and it didn't thrill me as much as the others and the other was a fried cinnamon roll type donut and it also wasn't as good as the others. By no means bad, but just when the old-fashioned, Elvis, and F-Bomb were SO impressive, they didn't stand up. I'll be going back to try more flavors and to have more of that old-fashioned.
