A staple in the PBC diner rotation, This is It Cafe never disappoints. Apparently, they'll be offering dinner in the near future due to the recent boom of construction. My brother and I visited last Friday for breakfast and it was delicious per usual. I opted for an egg white omelette with whole-wheat toast and sliced tomatoes. He ordered a breakfast combo of sort and also enjoyed his meal. It was his first visit and likely won't be his last. The meals are always delicious, fresh, and plentiful. They offer a vast selection along with daily specials such as dolphin fingers, fried catfish, or NY strip steak and eggs. Finally, many of the Pigs have retired but some of the new staff are delightful. read more

Stumbled upon this place while needing a bite in the area. Had no idea what to expect! I was pleasantly surprised with the Highwayman paintings, the friendly service, and the chicken salad. The steak fries are also delicious. I've been back one other time just for the chicken salad! My dining partner had the French Onion soup and fruit. High marks about both! Simple, not expensive or fancy diner/cafe. Wish this place wasn't so far from the Treasure Coast; but it's worth it if you happen to be in the Downtown area! MJ was a delightful server. read more

This is it Cafe is the only real choice in West Palm Beach for a generous, tasty, inexpensive breakfast! I'm there 30+ times a year. 25 of those times I order corned beef hash and eggs. There are other good choices - fried catfish - but I really enjoy the corned beef hash. And the eggs are always cooked perfectly. You can choose from hashbrowns, grits, or oatmeal - all good choices - plus you get your choice of toast or biscuit. Wait staff is terrific - friendly, casual, attentive. The owner is often present especially when a customer wants to buy one of his Highway Men portraits that adorn the walls. I don't go for the expensive artwork - I go for the excellent food. There's new housing construction in this area of town and This is it will soon begin to open for an early dinner! That's exciting. Means I'll be there 60+ times a year. Did I mention their prices are the most reasonable in miles? I don't know how he does it - but the restaurant could be a loss leader for all those expensive artwork sales. read more

My friend Lisa suggested we come here for New Year's Eve breakfast. Found parking in the lot next to the restaurant. Was a little confused by the entrance as the door looked more like entering a utility closet. My friend was already seated so I joined her. Waiter came over to take my drink order. I just got water. We asked her to turn on the fan as it was hot. I joked with her but her sense of humor was non existent. I ended up turning it on myself because no one came over to assist. This place is a Northwood classic! It's an old school diner with great service and excellent food. The prices are great the amount and quality of the food they serve. Change the name to "This WAS It" because this place is lightyears past its prime. 15-minute wait to be acknowledged, rancid table creamer that curdled my coffee, and a waitress who rolled her eyes when I asked for fresh milk. The omelette was burnt, the potatoes were raw, and the service was non-existent. $18 plus a tip (because I'm not a monster) wasted. Never again. read more

We went here to meet my step daughter for breakfast before headed down to the coffee shop down the street. It was a gorgeous morning so we opted to sit outside. I can not tell you about the inside of the place. The outdoor seating was nice and clean and pet friendly. I got the Western omelet with home fries, my husband got the fried catfish and eggs with home fries and my stepdaughter got the sausage biscuits and gravy. My husband said that he thinks it is the best fried catfish he has ever had. My omelet was OK, not the best, not the worst. I was not crazy about the home fries. They were large chunks of potatoes and mushy. I prefer sliced smaller and a lil crispy on at least one side. Hash browns were not an option, so next time I will get the grits. Small no fuss breakfast and lunch spot. The portions are great and the food is fresh. The home fries were well seasoned but ate more like mashed potatoes as there was barely any crust from the flat top. I would recommend asking for them well done. The short stack was perfect for us to share along side our meals. Who doesn't have room for a pancake? They also had multiple hot sauces to choose from which I appreciated since I'm a big fan of cholula especially with my eggs. The service was very good we were greeted and seated immediately getting to chose which ever table we wanted. This is def a no fuss type of restaurant where the food speaks for itself. This has become my go-to diner for weekend breakfasts in WPB. The neighborhood (old Northwood) is a great place to take a stroll and walk off your eggs Benny and browse in the neighborhood shops. Breakfast Review - This is really the "This is [NOT] it Café" - Just Skip "it"! First, TG has been there once or twice a year over the last five years, and so this is "strong review." TG REALLY wants to like this place (to support local businesses), but cannot. TG reluctantly gives the "This is it Café" a "D-" (almost an "F"). The "This is it Café" is located in the Northwood area of West Palm Beach with can be most kindly described, as a "transitional" area boarding on a "very rough" area of West Palm Beach (check out the crime stats if you don't believe me - http://www.areavibes.com/west+palm+beach-fl/northwood+hills/crime/ - Rated a "F" on the crime scale by AreaVibes). Located very near on US1 on the corner of 24th St and Spencer, you get the first indication of the local dining experience by the bars on the front windows (fact). The area has a lot of potential (a bohemian feel), and there is substantial new development going on nearby that will hopefully help the area turnaround in the future (unfortunately not too soon). There is on-street parking and a small parking lot (do not leave valuables in the car). There is no outdoor seating (most likely for good reasons), and there are nine uncomfortable counter seats (a couple of which are near to falling off), there are mainly tables and a few booths. The place is VERY noisy it would be difficult to have a regular/normal conversation with more than two people without yelling to match everyone else's volume (there is no music in the background, but you could never hear it anyway). The crowd is mixed locals, tending to a local older crowd (probably attracted to the reasonable prices) and lack of other nearby options. On the weekends during the season, the place seems to attract a lot of older Québécois (who tend to be a bit louder). The tables are spread apart, but it does not seem to help the noise level. There are some larger tables, and some tables can be moved to service larger parties. The menu is fair extensive (and uninspired) with a number of daily specials. The dishes the Ghost has ordered tended to be "bland" (at best) and unappealing (at worst). All the dishes needed more seasoning (most likely a result of catering to an older crowd). The most recent special, a "southwest breakfast wrap" was the worst that TG has ever had (true), the hash browns were more like lumpy unseasoned mash potatoes. Plating is an afterthought. The prices are good/reasonable. Hence the place is crowded with patrons (on weekends) who put price ahead of food quality and service. On a recent visit the flatware was not well cleaned (there was "stuff" sticking to the handle of the fork I was given) - I have included a picture (attached to this review for reference). Coffee is OK (the best thing TG can say about this place). Unfortunately, the service mirrors the food. It is "spotty" at best borderline "rude" at worst. On a recent visit, the Ghost sat at the counter (recall there are only nine seats) and waited 5 minutes for any of the four people behind the bar to greet him. After 5 minutes the Ghost left the counter looking for a table (and service). Coffee refills are difficult to get (getting attention from overworked staff might be the key issue). "Facilities" are not as good as they should be, but not bad enough to a trigger visit from the health inspector. This saved the rating from becoming an "F". TG has been to the "This is it Café" once or twice a year for the last five years and was hoping that his experiences were unlucky and/or things would get better. Sadly neither seems to be true. The Ghost will not be returning to update this review unless owners or management changes. Note: to show you can't trust newspaper's reviews; the restaurant has a Palm Beach Post article framed (behind the checkout counter) touting the newspaper reviewer's positive experience (unbelievable). If you are a visitor, it would be better to try any number of other great West Palm Beach breakfast places. If you are a local to the Northwood area, want cheap, have "dead taste buds," and are "packing heat," then go for it!... but not after dark.
