I would select zero stars, however, that is not an option. I understand that maintenance on your wedding ring is crucial, therefore, I went to Thornton & Sons to have my ring cleaned and the prongs checked. I never had a problem for years with my ring until I went to TS. It was 24 hours after TS servicing that my diamond fell out of my ring. I was devestated with many hours of searching and I luckily found my diamond. I called Thornton and Sons and they pretended that they had nothing to do with the loss of my diamond, even though, they recently worked on the prongs that hold the diamond in place. Subsequently, they refused to be culpable and make good on the work they had done. They did provide me with the price/cost analysis to replace the diamond. To say the least, I took my business and peace of mind elsewhere. I suggest you do the same and elect to do business with a reputable jewelry store! read more

I took an arrowhead to John, gave him an idea of what I wanted and he ran with it. He called me a week later with a mock up which I approved. Another week later he calls me and says the piece is ready. I go in and he shows me the piece and I was stunned, it was absolutely the best thing he could of done for that arrowhead. A lazy worker at the Gucci outlet told us that they don't adjust their OWN watches at the store, therefore my boyfriend and I were forced to look for an alternate watch place to get it adjusted. Luckily we found this place through word of mouth and came here to get the wrist size adjusted. The blond lady who helped us was really nice and helpful. I Took a very unique and special ring to me in for repair. I didn't want to go to any other place because I knew all repairs done in house. Cost was about what I expected with a 10 day repair time. Again about what I expected. Much to my surprise the next day 24 hours later ring was done and ready for pickup. Hello everyone..... I need to share my experience with Thorton and Sons as I have never been treated this way and gave them an opportunity to try to change my opinion. My fiancé purchased an engagement ring from Thorton and Sons based on my recommendation as my parents have given them 25 years of business. After I had my ring sized I simply requested my appraisal and paperwork to which they said it would be 6 to 8 weeks to receive the paperwork. (Odd they didn't have it in store?) I finally called them to ask why it was taking so long and they then told me they wouldn't give me the paperwork only my finance who was out of town on a fire. I asked why they never mentioned this before and kept me strung along waiting. I now know why they didn't want to give me the paperwork. The quality of the stone isn't what they told my fiancé. I got an appraisal and it's value is 2k less than he paid!!!!! PRETTY FREAKING LOW FOR A SUPPOSEDLY REPUTABLE JEWELER. Never buying anything from them again!!! read more

Doesn't deserve 1 star. Have a ring purchased from Thortons over a year ago for over $4k. Never shown the diamond thru a magnifying glass...my bad. But when trying to sell it to a diamond buyer and other jewelers, no one will pay over $500 because this supposed H I 1 diamond is absolute krap and worth less than the setting. When tried to return for even a partial refund, which mind you on their receipts it just states they don't give refunds on Layaways, which this was NOT, was scoffed at and told they don't give refunds. If you're not happy with it, you can trade it in only if you'll spend TWICE the amount initially paid. We will NEVER purchase from thornton and sons again. If you are not planning to be a "high spender" do not waste your time in my opinion. My first time in I inquired about purchasing a new wedding ring I was treated with the utmost respect. Very accommodating, helpful with questions and the owner even came and spoke with me about what my options were. My old ring had issues with the setting and after several times of diamonds coming out and becoming lose my husband and I decided it would just be best to start fresh. Next time in the establishment about a month later with old ring in tow, I was ready to purchase and possibly sell my old damaged one. I was then told my ring was not worth anything to them and was poor quality (although the owner looked at it the first time I was in and mentioned nothing about it then). $2600 for my original ring and 2.5 carat total weight doesn't seem like peanuts to me. They kept my rings over two weeks and when I went to pick them up the prongs were so rough I had to leave them to get that fixed. Very poor work. My husband pick them up for me the next day. When I got them back I noticed that one prong was visibly lower than the others. I went back to have them fix this, which should have been done right to begin with and was told I'd have to leave them for another 10 days. I paid over 750.00 dollars for this work. I am curious why my previous review is no longer on Yelp. This experience was in 2008 so not sure if they remove older posts. I would be very careful purchasing anything at this store. To make a long story short, my husband and I went here to purchase a man's wedding band. We were greeted warmly by the staff but as soon as we mentioned that we wanted a fairly simple MEN's wedding band, no one took interest in helping us. We could tell that the sales woman who did end up assisting us was not very interested in doing so. Anyway, we decided on a ring and ordered it. When I returned weeks later to pick it up, my husband and I realized it was a knock-off - the brand of ring we ordered etches their name on the inside and this ring did not have it. We returned it, they apologized, and re-ordered the ring. The 2nd ring was the wrong size! Now we had lost all faith that the employees at this store were competent so I obtained a refund and have never returned. This experience should have been an enjoyable one for my fiance and I but it was not. I ended up purchasing this same ring online at a huge savings and hassle free. read more

IF YOU VALUE YOUR JEWELRY DO NOT TAKE IT HERE FOR REPAIR WORK. I brought my brand new wedding set, less than 1 year old, in to get soldered together. I was so happy when it was ready a week ahead of time! I went to get it and noticed immediately that the two rings seemed to be crooked but let it go, it wasn't terrible. A few days after picking it up I noticed that three of my diamonds on the band of my engagement ring were discolored. They were much darker and had no shine to it. I brought it back to them and asked them about it, to which they looked at me like I was crazy and offered to clean it for me again. When I got it back they were still slightly discolored, better but still off, but I could tell I was obviously not going it get any help from them. I ended up going to another jewelry store downtown who told me that he diamonds had been replaced. REPLACED!? The set was less than a year old and they'd lost three of my diamonds? I understand that things happen, but one, they did not inform me they had lost or replaced three of my diamonds and two, the ones they replaced them were were terrible!! I was so upset. So now I've had to pay for these people to solder my rings together, crookedly, and now double what that cost to replace their crappy diamonds from them ruining my wedding set and to get the solder fixed. Took in my engagement ring to have the diamond tightened and polished. I literally wore it for 2 days after picking it up before having the stone fall out. When I took my ring back in to explain what happened the lady helping me was extremely rude and proceeded to say it was my fault the diamond fell out and that she'd be charging me AGAIN to have the stone reset. She went as far as to say "how do I know you didn't bang your hand against a wall?" Seriously? Needless to say I did not have them fix my ring. This jewelry store is top quality in Solano county. I purchased a custom engagement ring from Thornton and sons and my fiancé gets nothing but compliments! Customer service was great, the owner has taken great care of us as we have had to have the ring resized a few times now. Anyways willing to do so within just a few days. The prices are very fair, with a small bit of lecture from any of the staff there on clarity, brilliance, cut, and size, you realize what you will be paying for with the specific attributes of your gems in question. I try to support local businesses because it helps our community, but when I'm not treated with respect, I'll go somewhere else. On 1/17, I went to get 2 watch straps adjusted for my son. I also needed 2 watch batteries. The gentleman who helped me was nice and helpful. However, one of my watches wasn't working. I took it in today and this lady asked what she can help me with. I explained what happened and immediately she said, "It's your watch." I asked, " How do you know it's my watch?" She explained that the battery was new. I don't understand why she assumed it was my watch. She said "I'll take out the battery and replace it if you want". Then she showed me on the meter that the battery was good. She did it so fast and the needle was barely in the green area of the meter. She replaced the battery. I set the time and the needle began to move after a few seconds. She said, "It's your watch. I absolutely love the customer service! I went in and worked with Dottie and (I think) Sharon to get my ring sized. They were very polite and knowledgable. I just moved to the area. My husband and I love jewelry, mostly me, but still we were hoping to create a relationship with someone close by our new home. I walked in and asked if they did watch batteries as I had a coach watch and a toy watch that needed new batteries. They said they could help, but then I asked the attendant, a female with brown hair, if they charge to clean rings. They didn't charge, so I was beginning to look around to shop and I asked her if there was an area they cleaned that I was able to watch. She then said, No, you can't watch. I explained to her that I was just curious as I'm new to the area and looking for a jeweler relationship to begin. To which she snubbed and said, we have plenty of diamonds here, why would we want yours. I was shocked. As a new client and knowing nothing about me I was just suggesting I was feeling nervous. She knows nothing about my stunning ring and how much my husband invested in the best, not buying from a chain jeweler it is probably the best diamond they would ever have in their hands. I've used Thornton for 20 years and I have to say when I picked up my rings, the person behind the counter was not very nice. She told me the tips on my set were worn and the jeweler recommended they he strengthened. I asked how much that would be. She said, after many calculations and consultation, $274.00. She said they have a sale on the work I needed I in March. I asked if it would be ok until then. She looked at me like I was crazy and said quite condescendingly, "I can't guarantee anything." I did not ask her to guarantee it. I asked if it would last another year for whatever sale they had. I would have opted to have the work done right then and there if she had it been so nasty in her response. I paid my bill and walked out. I will not be returning. I would rather travel further than go back for more poor customer service. Not impressed either with their prices which are way over what they should be. Wanted a gold chain which they wanted $850 plus for. Went to Kohls and got it for $225. read more

Thornton & Sons is only interested in getting your money. They will be nice enough if you want to buy something from them, but don't try to go there unless you are buying jewelry. I have lived in Vacaville for 13 years and until recently I would go to Thornton, see what I wanted and buy it. I like to support local companies. However, when I went it to buy ear rings for my daughter they asked if I wanted my wedding ring (that I had bought there) cleaned while I waited. I said sure, but upon getting my ring back they had "cleaned" the pattern on the ring off. When I mentioned this to them, they said that was my problem and for $50 they could send it to the manufacturer and the manufacturer would repair it. I said do it as I wanted it to look good again, but I told them that they needed to talk to the top manager(owner) about them paying for this service as it was there fault. When I returned they said I had to pay for the repair even after I told them of the many purchases I had made there and that I would take my business elsewhere. They could not have cared less! Today I am glad to say I am going to go to DeBartolo jewelry store in downtown Vacaville and drop some considerable money with them. DeBartolo will make much more money today than $50 from me which Thornton would have received if they just would have been decent. Don't go to Thornton, go to DeBartolo and get good quality jewelry from local people that actually care about the customer. read more

We ordered the ring and we received the wrong ring - it looked the same but it was clearly a cheaper knock-off. They re-ordered the ring and this time it was the RIGHT ring but the wrong size! We cancelled the order and purchased the ring online at a tremendous savings. The cost savings isn't the point here - we didn't care for their snobbish attitude and they never apologized for their errors. I took my watch into the Thornton and Sons to have the battery changed as it had stopped working. I have a Tag watch that is just about 2 years old. Thornton and Sons indicated that they could not properly seal the watch in their store and would need to send it out for the battery change. I agreed to this and paid for the shipping ($25) with the understanding that I would be contacted within a few days with a quote for the repair with the vacuum seal. The representative at Thornton and Sons indicated that it would probably be around $75 total (including the $25 for shipping). About two weeks later, I finally got a quote and it was for $440! When I asked why, they indicated that the watch needed servicing and that it wasn't the battery. Whoever they sent it to supposedly changed the battery with no success. When I asked how often a Tag should need servicing, I was told every 5-7 years; this is only a 2 year old watch. I will give the sales rep at Thornton and Sons credit because he immediately said 'send it back to Tag' as there seems to be something faulty with the watch. They shipped the watch back to the store and I picked it up about a week later. I then shipped it down to southern California to the jeweler who had originally sold me the watch; he also specializes in watch repair. When he received the watch, he changed the battery and it worked fine. He also indicated that if the watch had needed a full service, it would only cost about $100. I cannot hold Thornton and Sons fully responsible for what happened but I certainly hold them somewhat responsible. It is inappropriate for them to assume that I would be fine with a $440 watch repair when I had originally been given an estimate of around $75. It is equally inappropriate that they choose to do business with a third party company that is clearly dishonest and overcharging its customers. $440 is nearly a third of the original value of the watch - much too much for a service. This of course, is based upon me assuming that it was all the third party company driving the price - I hope that Thornton and Sons wasn't in on it, but I can't be certain. Finally, the timelines quoted for my service were missed by a long shot. What should have been about a week or so process turned into almost a month. In all, I will not be returning to Thornton and Sons for any watch services and will think twice before going for any jewelry services. read more

Thornton & Sons: Poor customer service! I bought my wedding set from here, recently i had a diamond fall out and replaced. I picked up my ring on a Friday with a reciept that said loose stones replaced and was told that the jeweler said everything was in good working order. That following Tues, I noticed another diamond missing. Took my ring back, was charged and additional $194.73, on top of the $122.73 for the 1st repair, and was told that I had "ripped off" a prong on my ring. I called and spoke with the original sales person, Jeff, who is really an amazing person, and he told me he would speak to the owner. Jeff called me back and we talked about getting a plain band since I am affraid to wear such a "delicate" piece of jewerly now and was told that the owner, Johnny Thornton, was not going to apply any type of credit.or discount, that it was MY fault the diamonds keep falling out....ummm it was 3 days after I picked up my "repaired" ring! Further more, the owner had Jeff call me, instead of going above and beyond for a customer! Bad business Johnny! All I can think of is he must be one of the "sons", if Johnny is in fact the original owner, SHAME ON YOU! I will make sure to advise eveyone I come in contact with to stear clear of your facility...being that it seems to be "my job" that is causing dimonds to fall out!
