I have to give this one three stars. It's got good points and not such good points and so I think it balances out to 3. The good: -fresh veggies, and lots of them. -abundant choice of sauces -overall very good food The bad: -It's more or less a dive in a questionable area -everything (from rice to the buns) is extra -the service isn't that great - I've had to ask for water more than once and never offered a refill -the overall price is high for what you get I have seen the owner take in a couple of men who couldn't pay, and feed them, which was nice. I've been coming to this neighborhood spot for DECADES. The process for selecting your meat for the bbq and the number of selections has changed but the (frozen) meat and vegetables are as fresh as ever. No frills. Serves beer, egg flower soup and kimchi. The only thing I hear from the handful of patrons in the restaurant today is how good the food is. Once upon a time you could park in the tiny lot with no problem, but since the "Ratcheteria" a.k.a. The ORIGINAL AUTHENTIC Mongolian bbq in Los Angeles is STILL HERE!!!!! I've been coming here since 1983. And the quality is still much better than any of the crappy mall Mongol bbq. This place has a decades old proper Mongol grill, and the grill man Maximo has been doing his thing for over thirty years. Three Flames still has the freshest vegetables, best selection of meats (including lamb and shrimp), great sauces (a perfect non overwhelming mix), and because they use a little oil, the absolute best flavor and texture. All these places that cook with water??? BS!!!!! You have to cook with oil and on an authentic well seasoned grill. The pocket bread here is still awesome. Choice of rice or noodles. Tasty won ton filled with beef. Simple super flavorful egg drop soup. And the owner's absolute upbeat friendliness and charm. Barbara rocks! This is a solid Mongolian BBQ. To be honest, most Mongolian BBQs are terrible. I mean terrible. So to find a spot that isn't terrible is real find. My friend Spencer actually introduced me here and I've been here a couple times. It's got an AYCE but you won't really need this option. One trip is plenty food. And I mena plenty food. In fact last time I went, the ladies who worked there, after seeing how much meat I grabbed, insisted that I grab more and piled my bowl with double the amount. It was pretty cool. The selection of sauces is limited but works. All in, I would rather spend $20 and go to an AYCE Korean BBQ place. Not bad, just not great, either. My brother invited me to lunch and brought me here. It is family owned and ran by a husband and a wife. They are both very nice as soon as you walk in the door. Unlike the Mongolian BBQ at the mall that give you one bow for meat, noodle, and veggies, your order includes three separate plates for each. A bowl for your choice of meat, the also have tofu for those who don't eat meat. You get a bowl of noodles and a big bowl for veggies. You can also add spice of juices to your own noodles or you can ask the lady to flavor it up for you too. Once you're done creating your master piece the husband cooks it for you and it is plated for you. Overall I had an amazing experience and would recommend it for locals and for hungry yelpers who wanna try something fresh and authentic. My favorite Mongolian restaurant. Amazing food, good price and the owner is really sweet. This is one of my favorite places for lunch.

This was a big surprise for me. My girlfriend took me here while in LA and assured me it was great. Place is just around the corner from LAX so if you are returning or leaving through there it is a good option Mongolian food. The restaurant has been in business for 40 years and when you see the place you will understand that the age is accurate. Let me warn you that this is in a strip shopping center and it looks like a hole in the wall place which it is. Don't let that deter you from going in. It's has a very simple charm with a rare mongolian grill that I have never seen in a Mongolian restaurant. You pick out what you want in the plate and the gal makes it great. She can give you some suggestions but it's all a matter of taste. This is by far the best Mongolian food I have EVER had. A must on the bucket list of amazing restaurants that will surprise you. I've been coming here since I was a little kid, my father would take us to eat here before Laker games (back when they played at the Great Western Forum), and it's still a favorite spot of ours to this day. The food is delicious and the owner Barbara is always so sweet and welcoming. The portion size is more than generous, and it's all you can eat, but I never can finish a plate. Very odd place, and I've been to many mother Mongolian BBQs before. First, parking is awful here. There's a sports bar nearby that uses up all the parking spots. There's two spots reserved for the restaurant, but if more than 2 people are already there then I guess you're screwed. I walked in (the place was empty) and the lady at the front desk was bent over counting money in the drawer. She never once said hi or even acknowledged me at all- not even an "I'll be right with you." After just standing there I front of her for 2-3 minutes, I asked if I could just sit anywhere. She said yes. Kinda rude and very weird first impression though. Then I sat at a table and read the menu. Very expensive- $15 just for one trip, $30 if you want a full buffet. Then the lady asked me what kind of meant I wanted. I thought this was a buffet. So I looked at the buffet and realized there's no frozen meat there. The first time we came here my wife got sick. However, the service was not that bad. The lady who is probably the owner, she was more friendly, she let me change the channel on the tv as no one was watching it and they had a news program on. She was a little overly chatty but she had a cool spirit and was trying to help the customers have a good experience as best as she could. The second time was unbelievable! It was the worse service ever, this nefarious woman was different from the first lady. She was really rude, mean and ugly!! From the moment we walked in, they had a disturbing news program on which isn't the best ambiance for a restaurant, especially when you're eating with your family (my wife and I had our 10 year old son with us). So, I asked if I could change the station as once again no one was watching it and there was hardly anyone in the restaurant (FIRST RED FLAG!) and this dark spirited woman starts the night off by lying and saying that the TV only gets one station and that there are no other stations. i immediately called her out on her BullSh*t and told her that it does have other stations and that I was there not too long ago and the other channels worked fine. So she reluctantly hands over the remote and what do you know.... hmmm, the other stations seem to be working fine. SECOND RED FLAG! Then before we are even ready to order she starts telling us the to go boxes are fifty cents or some low price and I'm thinking to myself like, so what, who cares. I'm probably not going to even need a to go box. Then she starts trying to hard sell bread for a dollar like 4 times. Now, i'm starting to feel a little uncomfortable. I politely let her know that if we are interested in bread we will let her know and to please give us a few minutes to decide what we want. After we order our food, I ordered a Chinese beer which was good and my wife ordered a glass of wine but then changed her mind right away and then the lady started to give us a grief about that and then that's when I let her know that she is not being very hospitable and is giving us terrible service. I also let her know that the owner or main lady who is there all the time was very friendly and would never treat us like this. Then she reluctantly brought the beer for my wife. As we're getting ready to leave, there is a discrepancy on the bill. We get into another argument and then she reluctantly corrects the bill. After I pay the bill my son asks for a to go box which is like fifty cents. I have no problem with that because we knew that when we came in and saw the sign on the wall. So I asked for a to go box for my son, after she brings it, she stands by the table over our shoulder demanding the fifty cents. I said we'll pay it before we leave and then she just kept standing there breathing down our necks like pay and get out so then it got really ugly. We got into a big argument about her hovering over our table and we weren't even finished. I put the fifty cents on the table and threw the food on the wall!! Not only that but the bill was ridiculously high. We eat Mongolian all the time so we know the market prices for Mongolian plates and all you can eats or multiple plates, well this was for only one serving per person and was almost $60 for 2 adults and 1 small bowl for our son, 2 bread orders with 2 beers. We will never ever step foot in this place ever again and I'll be glad the day I drive by and see that restaurant shut down for such horrible service and over charging customers. I haven't been to this place in years. But from what I remember, it was pretty damn good. It's small, no more than 10 tables located in a small little shopping center with plenty of parking. They have an AYCE price as well, I forget how much it costs...but you can take your bowl, fill it up, and they stir fry it for you and you just eat away, empty plate and repeat if you wish. The funny part is that they have different sauces that you can add to your plate...sort of like a marinade or teriyaki sauces...well one sauce was called "MONGO" sauce and this was their speciality house sauce. Saucy name, however for the longest time I read it as Mango sauce...and decided to never touch that thing...mango sauce?? Having been to some of the best Mongolian BBQ establishments, I have to say that my expectations were extremely high for this one. I never went here despite spending the first 4 months of the police academy here at the Westchester facility some 15 years ago (which is directly across the street), I dunno, I guess I was too tired at the time... What was disconcerting was the fact that Mama-san (the owner) despite being extremely friendly and welcoming, handled my meat (OK that totally came out wrong) She asked which type of meat I would like and then proceeded to fill the very tiny bowl HERSELF (which in my mind, is an extreme Mongolian party foul) She then asked me if I wanted noodles (?) Uh, Duh, of course I want noodles, why do you ask? Oh, maybe it's because you charge $1.00 more for them (Mongolian foul #2) So off to the sauces and veggies, which are the only self-creation aspects of this meal. I was also disappointed to find no sign of white onions ANYWHERE!. So after loading up on the sauces and veggies, it was off to the grill. The hard working "merry-go-wok" boys did an excellent job cooking and were extremely tip worthy. They would have gotten more of a tip had the restaurant not stolen my money by charging me extra for luxury items like - NOODLES. The food itself was actually pretty good but the concept of the Mongolian BBQ feast gets lost in the translation at this place since they're pretty communistic about their portions - a characteristic i find confusing since they have FOX News playing on their TV's read more

You wouldn't think much of this place at first glance. It's on the fringes of Westchester and Inglewood- a part of town you'll rarely find yourself in in LA, unless you're an airline pilot/attendant or a student at Loyola Marymount University. I was the later. Anyways, Three Flames is tucked into a very shady looking strip of stores- A laundromat, a dollar store, a place that claims to sell live chickens but never seems to be open, a $1 store the size of a closet, a shady hawaiian bar called "Lei Aloha", a chinese fast food shack in the parking lot, and the Westchester Sports Grill, which is actually a pretty decent sports bar. The whole strip needs a fresh coat of paint, though. Right in the middle exists a diamond in the culinary rough. If you like Mongolian or Korean BBQ, you will like 3 Flames. Like other Mongolian BBQs it works like this- You choose a meat (chicken, pork, beef, turkey, lamb or tofu) and then you go through the buffet picking out what kind of sauces you want (all of them being mostly soy sauce based) and vegetables. After 5pm (i think) it's only all you can eat for $12. During lunch you get one go around of the buffet (they limit how much meat you get) for $8. Trust me when I tell you that if you stack your food right, one go around is all you need when you consider they give you rice and wontons as well. In my mind, it's still one of the best deals in town. Go in there any night and see for yourself- the place is very popular. When I used to live around there I would go there for dinner but get it to go- they charge you the $8 lunch price and limit how much meat you get, but like I said before, you can still end up with a huge meal. It really doesn't matter when you're there, the place can get pretty busy. Don't let a long line in the buffet discourage you though. The guys working the "shield" (they call it a shield, not a grill..read about it) move things along pretty fast. Don't worry about your proximity to shady parts of Inglewood either. Right across the street is the LAPD training academy, and there are always at least one or two cops in there, not to mention the numerous pilots who you will find make the place their first destination to eat when they're staying in LA. Last but not least, I like to tip the guys on the "shield". Watch these guys and their "swords" at work and the conditions they're under and you'll come to appreciate them. Matt read more

This is the crappiest place I have been to. Just looking at the limited food selection made me sad. And to top it off the price was high and there were so many add on for an "extra charge". The soup they gave us was watery and the fried wontons were cold and soggy. Will NEVER go there again. Food was OK, not bad, not great, but OK. We paid by credit card, and then I tipped the cooks at the grill with cash. The old lady had the nerve to ask us to tip her too, and I said "I just tipped the cooks" she followed us out the door asking us to tip her, and then I asked her if she was the owner, which she denied. As we got in our car, she bad-mouthed us to two ladies leaving with carry out. I knew, had we tipped on the credit card bill, the cooks would NEVER have seen a red cent. I'm rounding down. Three stars seems a little harsh but I'm offended by their business model. Like people have been stating, they definitely nickel and dime you. My dad, who took my sister and me here, has been a patron here for many years, as his office is a bit less than a mile from this location. The prices, he says, haven't changed much in the past decade, although they don't include tea, the pocket bread, or noodles in the price of the bowl. If you can't eat your whole plate, they charge $.25 for a take home box. I'm a personal believer that if something is a part of a meal, it should be included and its price added to the listed menu price. I don't want to think I'm gonna be receiving something and then have to order and pay separately for what should be a part of every meal. Tell me it's $10.25 if it's gonna be $10.25. On that note, the staff is friendly if not entirely warm and welcoming. Our (extra large!) water glasses barely passed the half full/empty point before they were refilled. The variety of sauces to add to our dishes was varying and delicious. The veggie options were all in great health and were also thorough although not completely exhausting. The grill cook does a good job of cooking all the ingredients to doneness but not dryness. The end result is a moderately healthy and truly delicious stir fried mongolian bbq dish. This is my favorite mongolian bbq location but I wish they would just update their prices to reflect the true cost. The current owner, Chen, was a waitress back then. She was always very charming, and even a bit shy, but always gave GREAT service, and was consistently helpful and friendly. Now a days, as her regular customers know, Chen is anything but shy. :-) And, even though she's got FOX NEWS on the TV all day, which is so NOT my station, her obvious zealousness to share her many thoughts, feelings, and opinions with the customers can either be very entertaining, or not, depending on your POV. Personally, I find her VERY entertaining, and again, THE FOOD IS CONSISTENTLY GREAT. Which is why I've been a regular customer since 1979. I've eaten at many different Mongolian BBQ's over the years, and for me, THREE FLAMES has got the best tasting food hands down. They have a nice variety of fantastic homemade sauces. All made with the best quality ingredients. NO MSG, NO artificial sweeteners, or ingredients. Great variety of meats, and veggies to select from and combine with the sauces to build your own custom stir fry. Including noodles. All fresh, and cooked to perfection on their convex, Mongolian griddle by cooks who really know what they're doing. AWESOME....!!! GREAT big portions for a fair price during lunch, and for dinner, it's "ALL YOU CAN EAT"....... ya just can't beat it. It's a GREAT deal. One of the Yelp reviews I read stated INCORRECTLY that the buttery, sesame seed biscuits [called "Shao Bing"] have had some sort of change in the recipe ... but... NOT TRUE... Another Yelper, who recently wrote a nasty review "claims" his wife got sick the first time they ate there.... but they went back a second time...? Really? Very hard to believe this Yelper.... if you read his review, it sounds like he's just trying to be vindictive because he didn't get along with either the owner, Chen, or another person who works there. Either way, his review does not come across as credible to me because in over 35+ years of eating at THREE FLAMES and bringing dozens, and dozens of friends here, I've NEVER heard of anyone ever getting sick from this place.
