I like my Mongolian BBQ, I have tried every one I have come across, and this was one of the worst out of the bunch. I went in for lunch, and the lady asks what kind of meat you want, charging extra for "premium" meats. Not being able to select my own meat and meat portion was the first bad clue. Second was her giving me a bowl of noodles, and it being an extra charge. The one good thing was the (extra charge) meat wontons, they were pretty good. The pocket bread was also better then average (but also an extra charge). For the price (ended up being near $15/person), I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

I have been patronizing Three Flames Mongolian Bar-B-Q for over 10 years now and in that time, very little has changed... which is absolutely a good thing! This place was amazing and cool before the whole "Mongolian barbecue" craze took hold. The place is never empty but you'll always be able to grab a seat. The staff is exceptionally friendly and awesome, always making you feel welcomed and appreciated. The menu offers a wealth of options but I always opt for their signature Mongolian bbq because.. why else would you come here? I typically go for the shaved chicken, which I then load up with lots of vegetables and sauce and then it's ready for the grill! Once it's done (which takes less than 5 minutes), it's back to my table where my smoking plate of goodness is joined up with various side dishes including wantons, kimchee, and bread. I love this place! It is a classic. Reminds me of back in the day when every one from our dorm would pack into the Explorer and head down manchester. We always thought we were venturing out because we were on the border of Inglewood! When you walk in you are greeted by the cute little lady that points to a table and says "you sit" "buffet there" Drop the purse and head for the buffet bar. You are allotted one bowl which you can put everything you can into. Starts with the meat, moves onto veggies, and then all of the sauces you can imagine, then top it off with noodles if you please. Hand over your bowl to the lovely men with thier sticks as they pour your bowl onto the giant WOK, and begin the circular motion mixing your dinner to perfection! One cooked they smile at you, hand you a plate and off you are! Returning to the table you find fresh rice, the best bread in the world (which you can break and put your dinner in them like a little pocket), wontons, and soup! And of course, I always order the Arnold Palmer which is so good there, and comes in a gigantic glass so you are sure to not be thirsty when you leave! The decor is by far my favorite part. They have flags from every season, bunnies for easter, cow flags (for what im not sure), some christmas decorations, and then out of a no where - a HD flat screen TV always tuned into CNN. I have never been lucky enough to sit in the "back" room, but the front is cool, about 8 tables, and some crazy wallpaper. Overall a fantastic experience with frends. I can only handle it about once per year though, because it is enough food to take home and last you three meals!! Also, careful that nobody in front of you puts chili sauce on their plate. Once my mouth caught fire and I couldnt taste anything for like 2 days! Luckily it was my roomates fault so I could harass her for it for a while. All in all, must try. I love this place! read more

The best Mongolian BBQ in greater L.A.! The best I've had! Some have complained about having to pay for noodles, or biscuits. Hey, you only pay for what you want! A buck for a bowl of noodles? Cheap! I've been eating here since the eighties and it used to be an all you can eat model and dinner was a lot more expensive. Since they reduced the prices by moving to a one trip model with extra charges for noodles and biscuits, we still leave stuffed but have a bit more money in our pockets. They have a wide choice of vegetables, including zucchini, bok choy, spinach, and kale! They make the best biscuits (shao bing): tasty, flaky, and great stuffed with BBQ, but so good I buy extra just to eat by themselves. They make great wonton as well (super crispy and full of meat) and when I get take out here, I get a side order of ten wonton ($5) and eat them on the drive home. read more

Hadn't been here for a couple of years, which is a real shame, considering how tasty the food is. Vegetables were really really fresh, and the noodles I had with the meal were nicely al dente. The very affable owner says that the difference is the cast iron bbq, but I'm betting that the ingredients play a larger part. The only drawback is that the TV seems to be locked on Fox News, which is only slightly less conducive to a pleasant dining experience than WWE Wrestling. Fortunately Hannity wasn't on, or I would have asked to have the set shut off -- he's WAY more annoying than WWE. Apart from that one little annoyance, though, I recommend the place highly. Okay, so my girlfriend and I love the Mongolian BBQ. After reading the reviews here we decided to drop down and check it out. So the first time we went, we didn't get there until 850p. They close at 9p. The grill was already turned off and a man was cleaning it. We didn't feel welcome so instead of eating we just left. A few days later we decided to try again. I thought the menu was priced a little high, with too many "add ons," but again, the reviews were good. Off to the food section. I'm going to go with two stars which may be generous... The sign on the outside says it's 11.95 for one trip and 13.95 for all you can eat... Then you get inside and the lady greets you and you get a plate only to sit down and find out it's 13.95 for 1 trip and 19.95 for AYCE. We told the lady about this and she was like, "Oh, they put the wrong side of the sign up..." As if everyday they replace the sign or turn it around... It's the classic 'bait and switch'. She adjusted the price after we were done but this place just wasn't impressive. For the 30 something dollar we paid I'd rather go get my own awesome cuts of meat and grill my own veggies. I've been eating at Three Flames for almost 20 years and after a long break, I was able to feast in the deliciousness once again. Driving up from my parents house in MDR brought back many fond memories of eating together as a family and I was excited to share the experience with my GF. After pulling into the strip mall, it seemed the same but as soon as we walked into the joint, everything had a different feel. The walls were covered with cheesy propaganda and the homey feeling that once inundated the place was no longer present. We were quickly seated by the grumpy Asian man and he attempted to explain the new menu to us. In the past, the ordering was very straight forward but the new ordering system is confusing and rather unorganized. Despite all of the other changes to the restaurant, the quality of the food was still amazing. I opted to get the "combo" which included the delicious sesame bread, rice and wontons. It's modest little restaurant in a little dilapidated strip mall. I had the Shrimp BBQ which was an extra $6.00 for 6 tiny little shrimp. OUCH! I should've gotten the chicken. I have been coming to three flames since I was a young child with my family. We used to eat here every week and it was AMAZING. However, I went back recently & was gravely disappointed. First off, the price is ridiculous for what you get. Everything is extra. No sesame seed bread, no rice, no soup, no eggroll. This all used to be standard. Now you must pay 15 bucks to get all of this. 2nd, the lady that works there gets your meat for you...you can't get your own (defeats the purpose of do it yourself...probably trying to cut costs). Maybe if you don't know better, you'll like it here but if you knew what it used to be like, then you might as well not waste your time. A very similar style mongolian bbq place that surpases this one is in Silverlake called Gobi Mongolian on Sunset Blvd. They have all you can eat for $13 (I think) on Wednesday evenings. It is much newer, cleaner, and cooler in there and tastes much better. They also have great martinis and a nice selection or beer. And by "nice" I mean imports other than Heineken. Three Flames is a little hole in the wall that serves up some tasty lunch that you create. I don't know why it's called three flames since there is the one iron griddle and during the lunch hour, your creation can be cooked along with someone else's. It is actually a great value for anyone with self control. It is such a large serving you would engorge yourself if you tried to eat it all. So in my world it is $11 for lunch + dinner, which is pure awesomeness. 1 bowl can easily be shared with 2 individuals. The vegetables are fresh and delicious with plenty of variety. The owner, Barbara, is just as nice as can be, she fusses and makes sure you have everything you need! Unlike other places of this type, where you have to STUFF everything into one bowl, you get THREE bowls here!!! One for meat, one for vegetables, and one for noodles!!! What a novel idea! I love it! Now, you have to understand, that right there is enough food for you! BUT - don't you DARE miss out on the best thing there - the Philly Cheesesteak!!! She takes those lovely sesame rolls, opens them up, and stuffs them with thin slices of ribeye steak and peppers and onions just cooked on the grill!!! Add a few slices of cheese...and holy moly.... your taste buds are gonna explode!!! I loved it! I of course added a heaping tablespoon of the delicious spicy chili oil.... so try it, you get two, so bring someone to share it with! Oh, and follow the directions for the sauces. This place is a cozy place owned and operated by a mother and daughter. Or so it seemed. The lady seating people was super sweet and very personable. As someone who frequents another Mongolian BBQ place in Westwood (Mongols) I was surprised at the fact that 3 Flames does not let you serve your own meat. Isn't this supposed to be a given? Sure...25cents please. The prices you see are for chicken and pork only. If you want to add beef, it's extra. Seriously? I don't mind paying almost $20 for dinner, but when the food isn't all that great, and you get bad service, it's really not worth it. The food itself isn't spectacular, although, it does have a lot to do with how you serve your own sauces (which I'm pretty good at) I particularly don't like the way they cook the food. I like my meat to stay intact, and they way they do it, they break up the meat into shriveled up pieces. Overall, this place is just OK. It's the nickel and diming that just kills it for me. I wasn't convinced when I walked in there's not a single person in the business. I was just about to walk out and the owner came out from her office and invited us to stay. She walked us over to the salad section and we grabbed all the vegetables she gave us a lot of vegetables and chicken. She then sat sat us down and offered us drinks and she came over again and we all had a conversation. I was amazed at the amount of food that was on my plate. With Mongolian barbecues all over the Midwest, I was shocked to realize that they are so few and far between here in LA. When my Chicago friend and I finally decided to buckle down and find a good place, we landed on Three Flames (mostly due to its proximity to her apartment in Beverly Hills), and I'm pleased as punch. It was mostly empty at 7:00 on a Tuesday night (though it filled up when we were getting ready to leave), and our butts had barely touched chairs before we were ushered us over to the buffet. They have two different dinner prices: $11.95 gets you one trip, and $16.95 gets you unlimited trips. Bread and rice are supposed to cost a buck or two extra (according to the menu), but the proprietoress brought us some delicious sesame buns free of charge because we were polite (a rude table nearby got charged for every extra item). I figured I'd be taking the unlimited option, but a single trip was more than enough thanks to the three bowl system they use. One big bowl for meat, one big bowl for noodles, and one big bowl for veggies (the lunch buffet seems to operate on different rules, so your mileage may vary), instead of the single bowl per trip at your usual Mongolian barbecue place. So my first trip turned out to be my only trip, and even then it seemed like enough to feed two people. The buffet itself was well-stocked. They had beef, pork, chicken, and lamb (shrimp costs extra), and all of the veggies you'd expect except eggs. Plenty of sauce options (unlike some places I've been to, where they put out some teriyaki and soy and call it good enough). The grillers worked fast and everything was cooked nicely. No underdone meat or burnt noodles. I'll be giving Big Wok a try next, just for variety, but Three Flames is aces in my book. read more

Last time they went, there was only one cook and server. Both did a great job with our food and service but were overworked and a line developed behind the cook. This is the only Mongolian Barbecue place I've found on the west side that's really worth going to (the rest will get one star if I track them down). As for the food, it is fresh, and with the health department induced change of separating the meat from the vegetables, it's a bit easier to manage. The thing that sets this place apart from other Mongolian barbecue places for me is the noodles, which aren't stale or overly sugary or just plain nasty like they are elsewhere. After that, everything is build it yourself, you if your food doesn't taste good, it's probably your own fault. Shao Bing! Shao Bing! Shao Bing! Oh yeah, the Shao Bing. The sesame buns are a must. I order a couple of them every time I go there and stuff as much into them as possible, eating my barbecue like some sort of Mongolian taco. I've always gotten them warm and flaky, which makes me happy. I've really only got two complaints about this place. First, the price for getting no meat is the same as getting meat. I'd go veggie-only here from time to time if it didn't feel like I was wasting my money. My earliest memory of mongolian BBQ was one place near UCLA back when I was an undergrad... Didn't really like it... so, when my coworker told me they were going here, I normally opted not to go... Until one day when I was starving, and did not pack lunch for work, and everybody was going there... I went with them... When i got there, I was a bit overwhelmed. I never really like the type of places where I have to pack all my food into a bowl as much as possible to get the most value... I think that's why I didn't like the other mongolian place I went either... But the lady saw my reluctance and asked me if it was my first time... Yes, I said... then she asked me what kind of meat I want? My coworkers told me the pork is awesome, so I went with that. So, she gave me a bowl of noodle, a bowl of pork, and another empty bowl, and told me to put my veggies in the empty bowl. Well... I can work with that. It helps that the meat and noodle is already pre-set. I put in a bunch of different veggies in my bowl, and the sauces too... I LOVE garlic, and they have garlic sauce that you can add into your noodle... I guess overall, if your food turn out bad, you have noone to blame but yourself because you're the one who mix all the sauces into the dish... ha ha... 25 cents for a to go box made me finished my plate... =P Next time, I'm bringing a tupperware!! read more

This is my far the worse customer service I have ever experienced for one plate of very little meat the vegetables were bad I did Not want to eat that at all . When I asked Susan for a refund she had a very bad attitude and said she could not refund our money I had to threaten to call the police she started yelling said in her exact words "I pissed her off ". Lol. Wow I couldn't believe she was talking to me that way This was my first time there. After she saw we were calling the police to file s report she gave us a refund . Went to Three Flames last night for a birthday party. I have only been here a few times before and was a little reluctant based on some of the negative reviews, but it turned out great! There was an ample selection of vegetables, all different types of meat and the pricing structure was quite reasonable, although a bit convoluted. Lunch is served ALL day even though the menu says only until 4pm. Extra charge for noodles is only at lunch. Meat is picked by owner only at lunch. Dinner is $11.95 for one trip, no bread, no soup, no appetizer, no rice. $13.95 includes bread, soup, appetizer, rice. $14.95 is two trips, no breat, no soup, no app, no rice. $16.95 is all you can eat of everything. Service was prompt (the place was quite empty at 7pm when we arrived, although that's understandable in this economy. We were seated in the back room, so not sure how busy it got out front when we were dining. The food was fresh, cooked just right (veggies not mushy, but not raw, either) and delicious. The owner was VERY friendly and accommodating and checked on us frequently to make sure we had everything we needed. I think a plus was the fact that you didn't have to decide which version of the dinner you wanted before you went to get your food. If you decided that one trip was enough, that's all you'd get charged for. If you wanted to add the bread, rice, app, soup later, you could do that, too. The owner said only about 1% of customers go for the all you can eat. As someone else mentioned, when you go to get your food (at dinner), you have one bowl for your meat, another bowl for your noodles and yet ANOTHER bowl for veggies, so you can seriously get a huge plate of food for one trip. Even though it's not the fanciest place around, the food is fresh and cooked perfectly. The bread (Shao Bing) is definitely a must-have, as well. read more

I grew up in Inglewood, and the first time i tried this place, i was hooked. Today i went back for the first time this year and like my third time since i moved from Inglewood. You get a choice of 'lunch' or 'dinner" menus (it doesnt really matter because both are served all day long.. after further confirmations since i, as well as many others before, and most likely after me were puzzled since it was not explained otherwise) Get the 'dinner' menu - you get to pick your own meats, vegetables, sauces, etc and you watch the cooks do their thing. be sure to tip them, of course to show your appreciation of their hard work its 13.99 for the dinner combo, which comes with rice, shao-bing, soup and a choice of won-ton or egg roll.. add $3 more if you think you can handle a second, or even (lord forbid) a third trip... if you choose the lunch menu, these items will be seperate costs, and espcially if you loooooove the shao bing like me it will be $.99 a piece, versus unlimited with the combo (of course i wouldnt mind paying $.99/piece for the bread.. which is why i come here in the first place. this item is unique to this location...period THIS IS THE ORIGINAL MONGOLIAN BAR B QUE... often imitated, (as evidenced by all the many knock offs) but if you enjoy authentic good food and a very helpful friendly staff, this is the place to go, even if it is (as in my case) a little bit out of the way. ...okay A LOT out of the way ;) 5 reasons why i like this place: 1) the shao-bing (pita bread) 2) the shao-bing (filled with the meat and veggies that you chose and have the cooks stir up for you) 3) the unlimited shao-bing which comes with the dinner combo 4) All you can eat for $3 more ...if you are daring enoug 5) Did i mention the Shao-bing? ;) I may go back again saturday as i will go check out a football game near that area read more

Same price as all you can eat on the menu! She Said! $4.00 Extra for Lamb and she Lied and said it was only for Lunch? So my girlfriend said I want to pay and get Lamb! And the lady said ok extra charge. Crazy! The T.V. Is blasting Fox News like everybody has said. Annoying! OK ! There Bar-B-Q is slanted? The only one cook poured my food on the grill and All my sauces were Gone:((( He added bad tap water to cook all my food! And they have No lemon for there Awful tap water. It took Forever to get our food for 4 at the table together! 30 mins.+ I ordered only 1 beer for our table for 4 people and it took 15 mins to show up and the place had exactly only 8 costumer's! We are all Mongolian Lovers so we knew how to make our favorite bowls so we were full and it was just not above average and I'm not being mean:) it was passable. I absolutely loved the food. VERY delicious. Service by the owner, her mom, and one cook was cheerful and gracious: small store = small staff. I agree that they are expensive. However we went during lunch and the portions were plentiful for the base prices of $10 & $12. I can't imagine anyone needing more food. I never liked Mongolian BBQ until I came here. Not only are the ingredients fresh, the serving portion is adequate. There are plenty of veggies, sauces, and meats to satisfy your cravings. I like that they use separate bowls for the noodles, veggies and meat so your bowl isn't toppling over and dragging against the counter at most places which freaks me out. I'm a bit of a germaphobe. Also preparing your bowls separately allows more room for ingredients. The restaurant also has a cozy family business feel. The very sweet lady, Barbara, makes you feel at home. The chef is entertaining to watch as he skillfully maneuvers your food around the dome shaped grill. If you're in the area, be sure to order from this place.
