Friday night at 7-8pm, the place is empty. I now have realized why the restaurant is going down the tubes and why we will not be going back. the front of the house staff is so extraordinarily rude and surely all the time. I was actually yelled at for how I placed my order and what I ordered, and we again did not receive the food we ordered and the sauces as extras that we needed. though the kitchen does an OK job, the front of the house staff makes the experience intolerable and we will stick closer to home for chinese in the future. read more

This had to be the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten. The fried rice was warm on the outside & ice cold on the inside as though it were microwaved. The egg rolls were dripping with grease & had no flavor other than the grease. I went with a group of 6 and everyone the same negative experience with the food. It was also quite pricey. $18 for a fried rice with 2 egg rolls. I observed awards on every wall. What a joke. There's no way this place would ever get any awards from anyone who's eaten there. I ordered carry out from Three Happiness yesterday, and yum! i was thoroughly satisfied and am seriously considering going back today. The Hawaiian fried rice (chicken and pineapple) was delicious- light, fluffy, not too greasy. And very generous in portion size- there were plenty of leftovers today. And the Szechuan shrimp was, by far, the spiciest and best Szechuan shrimp I've had in a long, long time. My only critique was that the shrimp toast was a little too greasy. I often go here for lunch and for five bucks, it can't be beat. the waitress, who is always the same is friendly and the wanton soup is excellent-tasty pork and dumplings. Try the garlic chicken with vegetables. The largest group the restaurant can accommodate is five people and there is no atmosphere to speak of, the plasma TV on the wall with Chinese television doesn't count. Food is great only thing that bothers me is that the little Chinese lady force fully makes you give her a tip. I work in the Industry so I know how to tip and to always leave a tip but her being on top of the check makes me NOT want to give her one. read more

Dropped by this place for dinner and was very disappointed with the food, especially given lots of good reviews. First time in Chicago and we were sent to this location by the recommendation of another business when we asked them for good places to eat. The portions were incredibly generous, could really serve two people. We had a large group, 9 people and service was very fast. Food was incredible! We all loved it and wanted to come back. The potstickers were the best we have ever tasted. Most of us got a General Tso's (various meats), Orange Chicken and extra fried rice. I deducted a star for the cleanliness. I fell bad in a way deducting it because of the situation. They were across the street and our understanding was that the city bought their old building. The drink fridge behind our table could have used a deep cleaning especially since it was so open to the public. read more

Been here over the past 12 years. It always offers consistently good food -- hot, fresh, yummy, and reasonable priced (3 full bellys and some take home boxes for $35)-- walked in hungry and walked out super happy. This is a cart system dim-sum (weekends) so there is no wait time. Recommend har gow, shrimp fun roll, chive dumplings ( both fried and steamed dumplings are awesome!). If you feel a bit more adventurous--chicken feet and spare ribs in black bean are good as well. The service today was a big surprised improvement, we could now ask for condiments and refill for our tea without frowny faces. And yes, they finally renovated the bathroom and cleaned it!!! Woohoo!!! I really enjoyed it. Plus 3 hr-validated parking just across the street for only $2; it gave you enough time to stroll to other part of chinatown and grabbed some more goodies home. :D read more

My family and I have been coming to Three Happiness for over 25 years. The food has always been hot and fresh. The service quick and friendly. But for some reason, this visit was different. We arrived at 11:15 a.m. We ordered about 8 dim sum dishes. No rice was brought to the table like in years past. The first dish was served at 11:45 a.m. Let me just cite that everyone around us, who came in after, was served before us. Sitting for 45 minutes watching other parties being served ther hot bowls of rice was more than frustrating because, of all things, rice is cooked in great quantities. When we asked the hostess if she could check on our order, she didn't even flinch. She looked at us as if we were the inconvenience, but she's had that smug look on her face for many years. When we inquired about our order a second time, it was apparently my fault for the delay in our order because I ordered egg drop soup, which was not dim sum. This explanation was not acceptable, as I have ordered soup with dim sum every time with no delay of other dishes for the past 16 years. When we asked a third time, our shrimp toast, my absolute favorite, was burned to a crisp. They sent a message that for some reason, we would not receive service. We asked if we did something wrong. Then we asked if they would rather us leave and they didn't hesitate to say yes. There were 5 of us, 2 women and 3 children. There are many places for dim sum in China Town, and for more than half my life I have chosen this particular restaurant. And as much as it hurt to write this review it will hurt even more to find a new place. read more

I grew up in Chinatown and this place used to be a good place to go. Not anymore! This place is not good anymore. Soup was bland and food was nothing to rave about but the worst thing...SERVICE. Attentive when we first arrived but as soon as there were prime coming in, they scooped in like vultures to clear our table...but we weren't done eating!!! They also let some man come and beg at each table when I woke up about this, they said it was ok and then proceeded to talk annoy me in Chinese...which I understood. Horrible!!! My sisters and I came here late at night, as they were the only restaurant close by that was still open. The inside of the restaurant appeared very dirty and unclean. When our food was served to us, the bowl of rice had a bug in it. I was by far disgusted. I barely touched my food. It was definitely a bad experience, so I'm not sure where all of these positive reviews are coming from. The place is dirty and although I do not live in the city, if I'm ever in town, I will not be returning to eat here. The staff wasn't too bad, the waiter was pleasant and did his job. I visited this restaurant Friday, June 1, 2018 with a friend. The smell was very unpleasant, but I considered the fact that live seafood were in tanks and that could have contributed to the smell. My friend ordered sweet and sour chicken. The chicken was hard and the sauce drowned the chicken. I ordered a szechuan beef, chicken and shrimp. My dish tasted burned with very little sauce. What an experience here at 3 happiness. The place is very dumpy. We came here with a group of people and everyone has negative reviews. The vegetable egg rolls had a taste like if they were sitting in the fryer for a long time soaking. The chicken was also not good. It had a rubbery/weird taste to it. I did notice the awards on the wall and I was wondering how they were awarded with food like that. Whatever you guys were doing then , you guys need to return to it because the food is horrible. Once upon a time this was my "go to" restaurant in Chinatown. More economical than its sister restaurant across the street, and frequented by local Chinese residents, it was always dependable. Lately, it has changed! A recent take out visit resulted in a guest getting sick, over salted food, sauces that were burned, food that was under seasoned and sloppy packaging. I ordered Mongolian Beef that was essentially beef and onions...flat and tasteless; shrimp with lobster sauce that was like a salt lick, tasted burnt and my guest who was ravenous ate a huge portion and later got diarrhea and was bedridden the next day. We also ordered shrimp toast, which was uber greasy. The Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce was watery and needed to be drained before you put in on your plate unless you wanted the rest of your food swimming in its juices. This is definitely coming OFF my list of places to visit in Chinatown, you can do a lot better at Panda Express, sorry to say! Shame on them! So like any thinking individual would do, I called. They assured me everything was fresh & they had no complaints about food. He offered me a credit for the future, which may not exist in my world, then asked me why I didn't bring it back? (trip would be from Hyde Park back to Chinatown while my guests waited) Finally he agreed to credit me for the Shrimp w/Lobster Sauce. Any by the way...I'm from the east coast (NYC) & when did Shrimp & Lobster sauce turn brown? Traditionally the dish is quite bland, white/opaque from egg whites...I could taste the heavy handed use of fermented black beans that should be used judiciously & may have accounted for the "burnt" taste. Awful! The service was terrible and the food was bland. I ordered the Shrimp w/ Lobster Sauce and my friend the Sweet & Sour. Waste of money. Our server was rude and never said hello or anything engaging aside from "Are you ready to order?" But took the time to smile and properly server tye caucasian family behind us. Coincidence...I think not! I hate to think that an establish would allow such behavior but by the tone of the conversation they had with one another, she was not interested in serving my & I. The menus were sticky & old and there were 5.....count them 5 menus . Confusing and completely unnecessary. The server was dismissive and barely spoke to us. This spot is just a definite NO for me and anyone who asks. Definitely better places in the area and I plan to patronize those who are more in tune with customer service. This place was recommended by one of the obviously delusional staff at Rush hospital. My husband and I intended to eat dinner away from the hospital and ended up here. The dining area was as big as my dining room so our plans quickly turned to carryout. Too chaotic and crowded and COLD. We got mongolian beef which tasted like a Lean Cuisine version of Chinese Food.. The sauce was the consistency of pudding. Yes THAT THICK. The eggrolls were just ok. We waited over 45 minutes for $30.00 worth of medicore gloppy gelatinous take out. The veggies were soggy, and the meat had a odd texture. Literally the worst I've ever had. This was suprising as the food being consumed in the dining room looked very good. Im with the other reviewer who said everyone else must have eaten off the eat in menu because the food on peoples tables looked much better than what we ended up with. read more

Going off an article I read in the Sun Times , I thought I would give this lil fellah of a restaurant a shot. Having been disappointed with Wah Sun before and sticking strictly to the butchers and bakery's for the last little while , I decided to spread my China Town wings. I brought my brothers , very picky Chinese food eaters in their own right since they live nearby. To start , the place is very small , seating only no more than 25 or 30 people. The service was bad , comically so , we were served by no less than 3 people and were on 2 separate occasions brought the food the neighboring table ordered. The prices were a bit high , and for the area even higher still. Now for the good news , this place had some of the best Chinese food I've ever eaten. The crab rangoon (probably not real crab , this time I couldn't tell) was one of the best I've ever eaten , I loved it. The won ton soup was great , and the "small" could have fed at least 4 people. The Hong Kong fried rice (we actually ordered the regular beef fried rice , but I didn't know the difference until we were a quarter finished with it. The table next to ours were the ones that ordered the HK style rice.) was very good. The Mongolian beef was common but good. The beef and Chinese broccoli was really good , very garlicky. I wasn't thrilled with the lemon chicken , but never really liked it any other time I've had it , it was ok at best. The roast duck was the best I've had at a restaurant , but not as good as you can get at most Chinese delis. I have to say the only saving grace of the service was that they were fairly nice , otherwise it was really bad. If you are getting food to go though, I can't recommend this place enough. Make sure you go to the Three Happiness on the South side of the street , because there is a larger place with the same name across the street. read more

Some people must be confusing the 2 Three Happiness Restaurants My review if for the little dumpy one on Cermak. There is also another, non-related Three Happiness Across the street. That's the big one. I've been here 7-8 times this last year and have enjoyed every dish I've had. Today I had the Beef Curry lunch special $4.95. It was a large portion, with alot of meat, and tasty. Last time was salt and pepper scallops $7.95 was very good also. The wonton soup is great. Clams in black bean sauce was really yummy. Every dish I've had there tasted completly diffrent from any other. Alot of chinese restaurants seem to just switch out the main ingredients, but slop the same 4 or 5 sauce on everything. My experience with the service hasn't been so great, and it is a dumpy place, but the food makes up for everything. This has been one of the most consistantly good Chinese restaurants I've been to ( and I've been to many) I've just knocked a star off from my last visit. The " snails" were the size of my pinky nail, with basically no meat inside. When I expressed my dissappointment to the owner, he did'nt apologize or offer to replace it even though I told him to just throw it out. Later when we asked him for the check, he had it in his hand 10 feet away from us, but refused to bring it to the table although he wasn't doing anything else. BAD ATTITUDE! read more

I made it a goal to make it to Chinatown in Chicago and stopped by Three Happiness with friends because of the mostly positive reviews. When I came in, I wasn't excited by the ambiance of this restaurant as it had chairs and tables of your average Subway restaurant. On the other hand, their menu items were very inexpensive. I tried the eggrolls as an appetizer and was very pleased. Also had the chicken curry and I got a huge dinner portion for under $10. Even though I left on a full stomach, I wasn't very wowed by the food quality. Also, the servers were inattentive and had to wave them over when I ordered an appetizer, dinner and to clear the plates. For the money, this place is a real bargain and even the beer prices inexpensive to the average Chicago bar, (only $3). However, I wouldn't visit this place to get a great Chinatown experience, only would come here on an empty stomach to eat cheap. read more

This is a great dim sum place - but extremely busy on the weekends even though they serve year rounnd. They have a full menu and well you can't beat the dim sum service of constantly rolling food. Sometimes they have run out of the more popular items on the weekends, but it is fun to go! read more
