Service, food, ambience; everything is top notch at Café Nelo a new establishment where the "Beer Noggin" used to be on Kraft Avenue in Bronxville. The space is small and perhaps a bit noisy but welcoming with pleasant decor, lovely dishes and handsome glassware. Standouts among the appetizers and salad were the pear salad with arugula and Bosc pears, the Brussels sprout salad the eggplant flan and the non traditional cacio pepe which is a riff by chef Giuseppe on Mac and cheese. Moving on to the mains I tried the deconstructed Beef Wellington which featured a perfectly cooked portion of Filet minion in mushroom sauce topped with a puff pastry cap. My partner tried the bucatini carbonara accented with kimchi which provided a pleasantly spicy note. And don't forget the pizzas. Chef Giuseppe Fanelli formerly of Tredici North where he was a star has somehow figured out how to create a perfect crust. It's paper thin and beautifully crisp and holds up well enough to fold it longitudinally, NY style without having the toppings slide off. Disregarding my lactose intolerance I enjoyed the duck with crème fraiche, wild mushrooms and black truffles and my friend had the pepperoni. Deserts provided another pleasant surprise. One night I just loved the in house prepared NY style cheese cake with blueberry coulee which was slightly softer than the traditional. On another night we had a more Italian style cheese cake that also did not disappoint. Viva la difference. Pana cotta and bread pudding rounded out our dessert samplings. I guess we will have to return again soon to see what else Giuseppe has up his sleeve. Finally the service is extraordinary. We felt like we were at home being served dinner by our good friends. On our last visit Terese joked that chef had kidded with her to make sure that she got the orders correct for guest 1 and guest 2 even though we ordered identical bronzino filet specials with eggplant tapenade. When you can joke about this detail you know that the boss cares about how his diners are being taken care of. If I wasn't in Seattle I would probably be going back to Café Nelo tonight.
